Caption function in InDesign CS6

I have been playing with the Caption function in InDesign and cannot get a handle on it.
Is there a discussion or video that might help me?
In InDesign, I go to enter a caption for my picture.
Object / Caption / Caption setup.
It says it is looking for a piece of metadata called "Name".
I go to Adobe Bridge to enter the metadata for this image.  There is no field called "Name" (or at least I have not yet found it).
Should I use "Title"?  I added my caption text as the "Title" in Bridge
Relinked the photo
I went to Caption Setup and chose Title instead of name, told it to use my "caption" paragraph style.  I'm not sure how the before/after function works.
I do not see the text either in Caption setup or anywhere else.
I tried to Generate Live Caption and what appeared under my picture is "<No intersecting link>"
Huh?
My goal is to keep the caption together with the picture when exporting to accessible pdf, or ebook, or Kindle.
Coaching, please?
Thank you,
Joyce

I usually use the Description field in Bridge (although you could also use the Headline or Title fields:
Then in the Caption Setup, I select the same attribute.
The Caption frame needs to touch the picture. If it does, it looks like this:
If it doesn't, it looks like this:

  • Why do the "SAVE", "SAVE AS" and "UNDO" functions of InDesign CS6 stop working after a short time?

    Why do the "SAVE", "SAVE AS" and "UNDO" functions of InDesign CS6 stop working after a short time?

    Normally they don't. You might have some sort of problem on your system, possibly a conflict with other software, or corrupt ID prefs or application. Trashing the prefs is easy, and good place to start: Replace Your Preferences
    It will help if you tell us the OS version, whther you've installed the 8.0.1 patch, and how you are trying to access the commands, and what happens when you do. Is this isolated to one file, or does it happen with all files?

  • How do I add a zoom function to a digital magazine (.swf file) in InDesign CS6?

    Hi,
    Im creating an interactive digital magazine for our company which will go on the iPad, but also online for computers.
    The iPad (.folio) has zoom functions, but on screen (.swf) the magazine is very static and peaple can't zoom and scroll (the zooming buttons function in InDesign doesn't work here).
    So, how do I add a zoom function to a digital magazine (.swf file) in InDesign CS6?
    (I read older posts regarding this problem in CS5... It's not possible for me to purchase an additional product for that. I have Flash, if there is a tutorial on how to do it, that'd be helpful too)
    Thanks for your help!
    Best regards!

    Although the help implies this should work, and I've seen it written in a book to do things this way, it's not how I do things:
    var content_req1:URLRequest = new URLRequest("text/hales.txt");
    var content_ldr:URLLoader = new URLLoader(content_req1);
    content_ldr.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, onComplete1);
    Instead, try:
    var content_req1:URLRequest = new URLRequest("text/hales.txt");
    var content_ldr:URLLoader = new URLLoader();
    content_ldr.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, onComplete1);
    content_ldr1.load(content_req1);

    Hi there. I just subscribed to Cloud CC and followed the directions. I selected English Arabic in my Adobe Application Manager and downloaded Indesign CC. However, I still don't see the Middle Eastern functions in Indesign. What did I do wrong? Please help.

  • Incorrect images from .indb file export to ePub in Indesign CS6

    I am having problems exporting images to ePub and get a different result from the same file depending on whether I export directly from the .indd file or from the .indb file.
    When I export to ePub from the individual chapter (.indd) file, everything is fine and the images appear in the correct locations where they have been anchored.
    When I export via the book  (.indb) file, images are being replaced with the incorrect file in the resulting ePub.
    Looking at the HTML, it seems not all images are being exported from the .indb file and when the image is missing, Indesign is substituting the next available image from the alphabetical list in the images folder so I'm getting incorrect images peppered throughout the book.
    Any idea where I've gone wrong and how to fix it? I've produced several ePubs with images and never come across this before.
    More details on how I've set up the files and any other info I think might be relevant below if needed.
    - I'm using Indesign CS6 (8.0.1)
    - I'm producing an 11 chapter book.
    - Each chapter is a separate .indd file for ease of editing.
    - These 11 files have been added to an .indb file for export to ePub.
    - Images are all anchored to their captions within the text.
    - On Export to ePub settings for images I have selected to insert a page break before the image and that settings apply to anchopred objects.
    Nothing else is selected (I don't want to preserve appearance from layout.)
    - I'm using the Articles panel feature for order of content.
    - In the original file supplied, the images were placed as .tiff images. I saved them to jpeg and relinked them using the "relink to folder" and "match same file but this extension" options.
    - No links are flagged as missing.
    Any help much appreciated.

    The solution points to how, it appears, the book panel export is functioning: each file exports a set of tags referenced to itself; file01 adds a "1" to its tags, and so forth. What I was able to do was use a file referencing all of the tags in the style suite in two ways:
    first, I exported to an epub the single file, creating a fairly clean CSS, which I then extracted and renamed;
    then, making certain that file was the "source" file in the book panel, I mapped for export all of the tags, being careful to be certain each tag/class combo was same as in renamed clean CSS;
    I synchronized the whole shebang;
    I exported to epub, adding my clean CSS as an external style sheet, selecting only "include embeddable fonts".
    Bingo!

  • Indesign cs6, smart guides on, transform not proportional

    i use my smart guides a lot. i have found that when i go to transform an image using the direct select tool, and the cmd+shift function, the percentage of the scale is not consistant on teh x and y axis (they should be the same). i do have the "constrain proportions" active. i have tested without them being active. it seems, so far, the only time i can recreate the issue is when the smart guides are active.
    -osx 10.8.3
    -indesign cs6 (cloud subscription)
    -smart guides on
    -transform window open
    -constrain proportions active
    -direct select tool
    -select image within a frame with direct select tool (white arrow tool)
    -use shift+cmd and drag and scale, repeat (small and large areas)
    -repeat a few times and watch the horizontal and vertical percentages in the transform window. percentages will not be consistent after a few tries
    does anyone else have this issue?
    can anyone else recreate this issue?
    does anyone have any suggestions on a fix (other than turning off the smart guides)?
    thanks in advance
    -maria

    okay, i finally figured this bad boy out! here is the solve in case you guys come across the problem
    -indesign cs6, go to preferences>guides and pasteboard
    -go to "smart guide options"
    -turn OFF "smart dimensions" and "smart spacing"
    all is well with the world, and i can sleep peacefully once again

  • Images in InDesign CS6 tables

    In InDesign CS6 is there a way to define tables cells to images instead of text (like you can in QXP). My aim is to import images into cell, but I want them to fill the full cell size.

    Sorry - InDesign doesn't offer that function - you'd have to set that up manually.
    Give your cell 0 padding all around.
    Get the measurement for your cell
    Create a graphic frame that size.
    And cut and paste it into the cell.

  • Adobe InDesign CS6 (8.0) Asset.placeAsset(document) getting undefined

    UPDATE:
    I commented out the addpage line and the script ran without any issues. So the error seems to come about when adding a page and then adding the library asset to it. So the question seems to lie in , "how to add a library asset on a new page?" The code below seemed to work with CS2.
    Hi - We wrote .jsx scripts for the CS2 version of InDesign. We now have InDesign CS6. When we run the scripts we get the following error:
    The basic function of the script is to import an xml file, select a library, get a specific asset from the library and then adds it to the document.
    This is the section of code in the .jsx file that is generating the error; line 204 is generating the error
    I've checked both theTemplate and myDocument objects at the time of execution and they are both valid objects.
    I have no idea why it would throw an undefined is not an object error message? I've scoured the internet and I am unable to find anything related to this matter and the guy who wrote the scripts has left the the company. Any help in the right direction is greatly appreciated.
    Also, this question was already asked in the Indesign forum, and they suggested I should ask this question here after no solution was found.
    Adobe InDesign CS6 (8.0) Asset.placeAsset(document) getting undefined

    We are using InDesign CS6 version 8.1.
    When I refer to the "old" libraries I am referring to InDesign libraries that were created using InDesign CS2 back in 2006, and "new" libraries are libraries created using InDesign CS6 in 2014.
    I just found out that the library assets in the "new" libraries were created by opening a document and dragging items from the Structure panel onto the Library panel.
    This is why the script was having problems placing the asset on to a document and the root of the problem. This should not have been done.
    I just created a new library and added a library asset by opening a document with pageitems on it and clicking on the New Library button on the Library Panel. I then ran my script and everything worked.
    Sorry for the confusion. There seems to have been some misunderstanding within our team.
    Nevertheless it was a great learning experience.  Thanks for your help.

  • Trouble with re-sizing images/textboxes InDesign CS6

    Has anyone had any problems re-sizing images or text boxes in InDesign CS6?
    I have been doing it for months by selecting the corners and dragging them in or out but suddenly it's stopped working. The arrow no longer changes to a double arrow when I hover over the corner and all I can see is an hourglass when I hover over any type of frame.
    I can resize images only be changing their percentage in the transform objects -> scale options.
    I tried re-setting my preferences and it didn't help.
    Please advise me if there is something else I can do.

    Tried that and it didn't help.
    The only thing I can think of is that there is something wrong or slow with my remote desktop connection which is affecting functionality. No one else seems to have had this problem.
    Thanks for your effort though.

  • AppleScript to check all pages within one Indesign (CS6) document have same size.

    I have bunch of InDesign (CS6) documents containing different page sizes (some are designed for a particular device and some are designed for multiple devices using alternate layouts). I need to assure all page sizes are same before I run a particular script.

  • In Indesign CS6 I export an artboard to  TIFF with the sdk's funtion SnapshotUtilsEx- ExportImageToTIFF(iStream) and, the resulting file is one pixel too large in the X, leaving a transparent strip on one edge. Any idea if there is a bug in the sdk?

    In Indesign CS6 I export an artboard to  TIFF with the sdk's funtion SnapshotUtilsEx->ExportImageToTIFF(iStream) and, the resulting file is one pixel too large in the X, leaving a transparent strip on one edge. Any idea if there is a bug in the sdk?

    An easy example to prove this bug of Indesing CS6:  I create a psd with Photoshop CS6, with width 505 pixels, height 317 pixels and a resolution of 300 pixels per inch. This psd is placed on a page in InDesign CS6. Then I try to export it as a tiff with the functions:
    fSnapshotUtilsEx->Draw(flags,fullResolutionGraphics,greekBelowPtSize,enableAntiAliasing,tr ansparencyQuality,abortCheck,pVPAttrMap,bDrawNonPrintingObjects);
    and
    SnapshotUtilsEx-> ExportImageToTIFF (iStream)
    The resulting tiff has a width of 506 pixels (one pixel more in width). It will happen the same if we start with a width of 507 pixels, etc.
    This error does not occur with Indesign CS5, nor Indesing CC.

  • InDesign CS6 and OpenGL 1.5 / image frames grey out in INDML

    Hi everyone,
    I work for a non-profit and I just upgraded to InDesign CS6 on my (signifcantly more robust) machine. Now thier (significantly wimpier) machine needs to be upgraded too as we send INDD files back and forth on a monthly basis, and both sides do edits to the file. The INDML file I export out of CS6 is greying out many of the linked photos (but not all) when they read the INDML file in with CS4.
    Two things:
    1) Upgrading the slower machine to CS6 is the place, but the hitch is that computer has a graphics card that is only OPENGL 1.5 capabale (GMA X3100). The CS6 specs state you need a card that supports OPENGL 2.0. We can't afford to replace the computer, so: I wouldn't dream of running photoshop CS6 on this old machine, but could InDesign CS6 function on OPENGL 1.5?
    2) Alternatively, why are only some of the pictures greying out in the INDML file? Can I fix this CS6 > CS4 issue without upgrading to CS6?
    Help! Thanks!

    The system requirements for stand-alone ID don't mention OpenGL at all. You might want to download a trial and see how it runs.
    .idml does not include any link previews (that's one of the main reasons the file is so compact). Images that are showing up on the other end must be accessible so that ID can regenerate the previews.

  • InDesign CS6 and difficulty printing booklet

    I am having difficulty printing Indesign Cs6 booklet by exporting to pdf, with first and last page as a spread. Also, when I use the booklet printing as i did with CS4, and CS5, I get an error that I don't have permissions for pdf embedding of the fonts I'm using, which are all Adobe purchased fonts.  Any ideas?
    thank you,
    Odessa

    Print Booklet is an entirely differnt function from export to PDF. Perhaps you should give us some more information about what you are doing, and your OS.

  • Indesign CS6 acting strange at times

    I am not loving Indesign CS6. Not because of it's functionality but because it acts strangely. When I quit it, sometimes it takes forever to quit and you start wondering if it is going to, sometimes it says it's closed but the tabbed windows still remain in view only grayed out with the beachball spinning. Eventually it goes away but it is disturbing. anyone know why?
    Another thing is that when I change a font size, it will look like it changed but still have the after image of the previous size. Irritating.
    One more, and I've had this problem for all of the last versions since I think cs4. When I try to replace a pdf with a current version, (unless I have restarted my computer since the last time I created it,) it tells me that I don't haver permisson or that file may be in use. I end up going to the pdf and trashing it physically. Not very efficient.
    I know there are 3 issues but I've only had it for a couple of months at best.
    The first issue is the most disturbing.

    Again, please remove your auto-signature when replying by email.
    Let's try a couple of diagnostic experiments, please.
    First, create a new user account onthe mac and log in with that and tell us if there is a change in behavior in ID.
    Second, try starting in with extensions disabled by holding down the Shift key while booting the Mac. Does that make a difference?
    Do you run any sort of utilities -- anti-virus, Mac Keeper, etc.?
