Captivate 6 Flickering

Hi all,
I use swf files as graphics in my courses because it displays as vector instead of pixels. This way, when courses are stretched to full screen, the quality does not deteriorate and the edges are sharp. Another reason for this is because I can create any animation in Flash whether to transition into or out.
Connecting the swf files on the timeline to have a continuous sequence of animations worked perfectly in Captivate 5. However, in Captivate 6, the entire course flickers as if someone is taking a snapshot of the screen during any file or slide transition. For example, I place a 3 second swf file and connect a 4 second swf file to display a 7 second swf on the timeline. When published, the course flickers when it transitions from the 3 second swf to the 4 second swf.
In addition, if the slide after include the same or simliar swfs, it flickers AGAIN during the transition to the next slide. So, the flickering appears during a slide between swfs, and also flickers after each slide. Any way to fix this flickering nightmare?
Here is a sample file that clearly demonstrates the problem:
http://artisture.com/digital/CP/CP6flicker.zip
By the way, I was informed that our wonderful team at Adobe already knew of this problem but they hope to have it fixed for the next version (Captivate 8). So if you bought a car with engine problems and the dealer tells you they hope to have it fixed for next year's model, good luck!

You are correct that this is a known issue.  There was a fundamental change to the way objects are added to the timeline that came in with Cp6.  The result is that objects such as your SWF animations are only loaded at the time they are added to the timeline, and this causes the slide flickering you witness.  There's not really a lot you can do to get rid of it other than rebuilding all of your animations to be a single animation that once loaded will continue unabated until finished.

  • Flickering between slides in Captivate 4

    Hi,
I'm having some trouble figuring out why my project flickers in between slides in Captivate 4.
    Some info on the project:
Each slide's transition on the properties menu is marked as "No transition". Most of the objects on the slide, especially those that appear at the very beginning, are set at "no transition"; others are set as "fade in only" and have at least .5 seconds to fade in.
At first, I had a floating image on each slide as a background image before I realized that I could set a background image. While I was playing around with this, I changed the background color to green just to test it out. It seems that the flicker between slides is whatever color that background color is set to. Black is the least noticeable, it seems...
Then, I set the background image for each slide, but it didn't seem to make a difference. Then, I merged objects, such as the title (same for each slide) and some other non-changing pieces (logo/branding) into the background, and this didn't make much of a difference either.
When I was playing around with the background images, etc., the flickering seemed to stop for a few slide-to-slide transitions, but these "successful" or seamless transitions don't seem to necessarily occur at the same places each time I pre/view them.
Also, I have Adobe Flash Player 9 software on my computer (probably from the Captivate 4 software or from the Adobe CS3 software). I'm aware that there's a new release (10.1), but I've only been able to download plugins for browsers (chrome and firefox, so far), but not the actual software .exe file. Not sure whether its really a FP issue, though, because I've tried opening the project's .swf file in both browsers and the FP 9 and the flickering still occurs in all.
I've seen some evidence of this flickering in other projects before. It may have been a few individual objects, such as a text box here or an image there, and I was somehow always able to fix it, though I never really knew what I did to fix it! The flicker usually just ended up going away! The previous problems were never as grand as they are now (being whole-slide flickers on EACH transition).
    Can anyone help me???
    It'd be MUCH APPRECIATED!!
    Thanks,
    Kate

    Macnimation,
Flash video can be a bit glitchy in Captivate--especially if the video includes the audio.
In answer to your autodetect concern, is your FLV set to "Pause slide till end of video"?
Then, just thinking out loud, how about a workaround for the audio overlap?  Create blank slide (whatever color you want) before the second video--set for 0.1 second or so and "Go to Next Slide".  Then navigate to that slide before going to the second video.  That might cut the sound off.  This might not be the best solution, but it might be the most expedient one. --Leslie

  • Captivate 5 SWF Flickering

I'm trying to convert some project from Captivate 4 to Captivate 5 and I noticed this error occuring, specifically in IE.
When playing a captivate project from an LMS (Moodle and Others) on Microsoft XP in IE (v6 and v7...haven't tried ie8 because our clients can't/wont upgrade) the captivate swf will flicker to white. We haven't experienced this problem before. Don't know why it's a problem now but here's how we noticed it.
We got a call from our client saying that this flickering was occuring when they played the project in their lms. When the screen would flicker to white (during a slide and between slides) all the button controls didn't show up. The only way to see the project again was to press a button (play, pause, skip, back, etc.) on the playbar. But this only brought back the project until it would disappear again a few moments later. Additionally, the videos included in the project stopped playing.
We asked what version of flash player their running. I was thinking maybe it's out of date. They were running 10.0.32.18. So I uninstalled my version and installed this old version from the Adobe archives. I saw exactly the problem they saw. So I updated the player to the most current 10.1.82.76. This didn't solve the problem though. Their flickering is still present. I realized that my version of IE was version 6, so I updated to 7, but the problem still is present. The flickering doesn't show up in Firefox on XP or any browser on OS X.
Anyone know what could be causing this problem or how to resolve it?

    From Ashish:
    Hi Kate,
I had a look at the project you sent me. You can try the following approaches to solve the problem.
    Option 1:
Open the Project and invoke the preferences dialog (Edit >> Preferences) Navigate to Project >> Publish Settings.
Under "Action Script" version change the version from "AS2" to "AS3". Click OK and close the dialog Publish the project.
Result : You will not see the flickering.
    Option 2:
Open the Project and for all the click boxes change the "On Success" event of the click box from "Continue" to "Go to next slide". (Click Box properties dialog can be invoked by double clicking on the click box on stage or by double clicking on the click box entry in timeline. ) Publish the project after changing the "On Success" action for all the click boxes.
Result : Flickering will be removed.
    Reason for this Flickering:
In  your projects as you can notice most of the Click boxes were having a pause time equal to the slide end time. So when the "On Success" action of the click box is set to continue, on clicking the click box the project would continue till the last frame of the slide and execute the "On Slide Exit" action of the Slide which is "Go to next slide". Hence few frames were getting missed and hence the flicker effect.
I tried upgrading the project to Captivate 5 and without any further editing the flicker issue is resolved.
Please try out the options mentioned and let me know if the same is resolved. For your reference I have attached your project with the option 2 in force.

  • Captivate 5 projects flickers.

    Good day all!
I publish my Captivate 5 projects using the Media option. These projects run smoothly on different operating systems, including XP and Win 7.
Today I tried to run it on another Win 7 machine. The following suddenly started happening:
the playback control bar is in the top left corner of the screen
    the words "project created by adobe captivate 5" appears in a white square that is flickering on top of the content;
the project runs through the slides without pause.
we downloaded the latest Flash (10) and tried it again, no joy.
There was another thread in December with similar problems, but those projects were published using the SWF option, which will not suit my application.
Has anyone seen this problem before? I desperately need to fix this as these projects need to go live in the next two weeks!

Has there been a fix for this yet?  Anyone with an XP machine can't view the EXE file without it flickering "Powered by adobe captivate".  Then it moves really fast and skips around.
It also does the same thing using swf for me.  However its only on an XP machine.  Windows 7 works fine!  I updated everything and republished.  I also made sure adobe 10 flash player was uninstalled and reinstalled.
    Thanks
    Dan

  • Alpha From To Effect is flickering - Captivate 6

I had added 10 image buttons in the slide and provided an animation “Alpha From to”  and mentioned the value as Initial 0% and final as 100% and applied the same for all the other buttons too.. But when I animate and see the smooth effect is not coming. It gives some jerk or some flickering effect is happening and this is not happening for all the buttons 1 or 2 buttons only.. how to rectify this.. Please help me.

Thanks for the replies, unfortunately most of the objects are buttons so I have to add the effect manually which is already unwieldy given that I'll have hundreds of coordinated assets by the end of this project. The transitions don't seem to be working, however it was creating a cool effect for one thing. This is why I wanted to do these elements with videos, but alas...
Thanks for the replies, I'm still waiting for IT to respond but if this problem is continuing then I don't see an update helping this particular issue.

  • Adobe Connect 9 Training Course Video gets resized after being published from Captivate 6

    Hello!
I have an FLV that I have published to Adobe Connect 9 from Adobe Captivate 6.
I have set the size of the video to the dimensions that best display the FLV with player controls.
However, when I publish to Adobe Connect 9, the video is resized to a smaller size and looks heavily pixelated.
Is there a way to keep the dimensions and quality without Adobe Connect 9 resizing it?
Here are the settings in Captivate 6:
Here is the first screen for the preferences:
Here is the second screen in Preferences:
Here is what it looks like when viewed from Captivate 6 in a web browser:
Here is what it looks like after it has been published and uploaded into the training in Adobe Acrobat 9:
If you notice in the image above the video is smaller and the CMS logo is very pixelated due to Adobe Connect 9 resizing it.
I am not sure how to keep the dimensions that I have from Captivate 6 and have it reflect after it has been published to Adobe Connect 9.
And is there more functionality that I am not able to access since I am using a 30-Day trial.
Thanks for taking the time to read and assist!

  • Captivate flicker when called from a loadMovie()

    Hello!
I have a Flash CS3 file (with Actionscript 2.0 coding) that needs to call 2 different Captivate CS5 files.
On frame 1, we can see 2 buttons that allow us to call the 2 Captivate.
If I write this directly on one of the button, it works just fine :
    on (release)
      loadMovie("demo1.swf", this);
But, I can't go back to frame 1 since I replaced the whole scene with the Captivate file.
This next code would allow me to go back and forth in my timeline since I call the Captivate in a movieclip instead of the main scene. But sadly it doesn't work. When I call my Captivate, it flickers.
    on (release)
      gotoAndPlay("demo1");
// Go to the right place on the timeline. The next code is directly on a frame...
    loadMovie("demo1.swf", demo_mc);
//demo_mc is the name of the movieclip where I want the movieclip to load.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thank you for the help.

  • Desperately need help with preview/publish problem in Captivate 5

I'm working with Captivate 5 latest version (incl patch) on a Win 7 computer.
I have a project of ~120 'light' slides (boxes, buttons, TEBs only on ~30 of the slides), the slide deck is imported from ppt. In addition I have short audio files (recorded with ppt, important into library) for each slide.
My problem: if I preview 'slide' or 'next 5 slides', everything works - but as soon as I try full project preview or 'from this slide', the audio carries on, but the slide content disappears, I get a white screen that is flickering & a sound like continuous mouse clicks. When flickering, you see elements of other slides appear and disappear, but so quickly (milliseconds) that it's impossible to figure out which slides. And most importantly: WHY?
I've tested with various slides as starting point and it always plays out as above, thus don't think it's got something to do with a particular slide.
Hope somebody can help. I'm at my wits end
    BR, Anja

This sounds like the dreaded Captivate OFOD again.
Please take a look at this thread and see if it gives you any ideas: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3502240#3502240
Have you got any operators or punctuation characters involved in those TEBs you mentioned?

    Hi there
I'm an Adobe ACE that hangs out in Captivate and RoboHelp forums. The question was asked in the Captivate forums initially. I recommended they ask here as well in case anyone had seen that as an issue in PP.

  • .swf without .html flicker? (captivate cs5)

    Hello!
I have an issue with Captivate 5, which I did not have in the older version (Captivate 1).
When I publish our Captivate into a Flash file format : if I publish it with the "export to html format" box checked, everything play just fine, but if I publish it without the box checked (without the .html file), the .swf doesn't work anymore!
    By "doesn't work", I mean :
    the playback control bar is on top-left of the screen instead of being in the bottom-middle of it;
    the logo "projet created by adobe captivate 5" is flickering on top of all the content;
the page is running in loop.
The .swf must be loaded in one of our Flash document by actionscript (which is why we don't need the .html). As I mentionned before, our e-learning worked just fine before that way, we just had to make an update in the online training, when I saw that with the new Captivate it didn't work anymore.
Has someone ever encountered this problem? Do someone has any solutions?
    Thank you very much.

I've seen similar issues to the one you describe when you have some component in the project (possibly a playback bar) that is set as AS2. Captivate 5 will only accept components published as AS3.

  • Captivate 5 Certificate Widget Breaks Project in IE

We have a Captivate 5 (CP5) project with a few slides and at the end we've added the CP5 Certificate widget. When we publish out the course, and upload it into an LMS and play back the course, it works fine in all browsers except Internet Explorer (IE). The SCO has major playback issues when viewed in IE6, IE7, and IE8.
We've tried removing the CP5 Certificate Widget and replacing it with the CP5 Certificate widget (ActionScript 3.0 version) and the same problem keeps occuring in IE.
Here's what happens when the Certificate Widget is in the project. The course plays but there is a constant flickering that occurs for the entire duration of the project. Our project displays momentarily, but is then interrupted by a clicking noise and a blank screen. Sometimes the blank screen is a white block. Other times its a gray block with the top two corners rounded. Sometimes it doesn't even revert to our screen.
ANY and ALL insight into what could be causing this is helpful! We've submitted multiple bug reports to Adobe but have yet to hear a response. We don't know if its a CP5 issue, a IE Flash-Player issue, a Widget Issue or something else.
Here's a video of what is happening:
Here's a ScreenShot: The gray box with rounded corners is not in our project.

Here's a better example of the project and how it's breaking.
As you can see, I just have three slides, with a button to continue to the next slide, but functionality breaks over the whole project because the Certificate Widget is in the project. Also, notice that I don't have the rounded corners on my project.
Seriously, does anyone have any idea what could be causing this issue?

  • Powerpoint Flickers when published as a SWF

I have recently upgrade from Captivate 4 to Captivate 6.  I am on version 6.0.1.240.  Almost all my work is done with an imported/linked power point presentation.  I am on a 32 bit Windows 7 operating system using the 32 bit version of captivate running under administrator.  I have all my work on the main computer (no network drives).
My first project created using 6 is ready for publishing.  When I publish the power point slides flicker between each one.  I searched the forums for help and found there was a patch from adobe.  It was contained in 6.0.1.240 which I have verified multiple times that I have loaded.  When I chatted online with adobe they indicated that it is the power point theme and to use blank white slides.  That is not an option for me.  I am using the corporate template which is very plain.  I have no transitions, no animations, no smart art.
Does anyone have any suggestions for me?  The output from captivate 4 NEVER flickered.  I am hoping we don't have to try to go back to 4 as we just bought 15 licences to 6.

    Hi all
Well, it is what it is as far as importing is concerned.
If you don't have special animations or whatever that need to come in and survive the import process, another way around things is to simply configure PowerPoint to present in a window. Then launch the presentation and use Captivate to record just the client area as you would any other application. At that point Flash Filstrup should perform a hasty exit.

  • Captivate quiz question

    Hi all,
I have this problem with Captivate 4 which I am starting to think has too many default settings that leave little scopr for alteration.
For example, I am making this quiz and if you look at the example image that I have included there are two screens A and B.
A is the part where you are actually doing the quiz
B is the part where you have done the quiz and going through all your answers to see how you have done.
On the first screen the buttons below (CLEAR, SKIP and SUBMIT) are obviously useful for submitting your answers and clearing any mistakes you have made and skipping difficult questions.
BUT when it comes to reviewing how well you have done, all I want is a BACK and FORWARD button at the bottom but Captivate doesn't give you that functionality/option. You still get the CLEAR, SKIP and SUBMIT buttons and you just use SKIP to go forward to see your answers etc.
I just think that this is too limited etc.
I did manage to change the default menu bar at the bottom to get rid of the audio button by finding the flash source code in the adobe captivate program files and re-publishing and I am hoping that there is some other flash source file that I can change!
I would really appreciate your help etc and I know that one user instructed me not to put a "blatantly obvious question" on these forums as at least 6 other guys put the same sort of thing on these boards and people were worried about these boards getting clogged up by the same question BUT my boss urgently needs some answer on this as we have both agreed that this is unacceptable!
I look forward to any advice.

    Hi,
Thanks for getting back to me.
I have looked at the article under:-
    http://blogs.adobe.com/captivate/2009/09/widgets_to_streamline_your_qui.html
And I have downloaded the widgets needed to hide the submit button in quizzes etc and then followed
the instructions etc, but after publishing they don’t seem to work and when I open the swf file in a browser
it just seems to be stuck on the first slide AND just flickers making a funny clicking sound.
    What am I doing wrong?
Could you please help as I have an urgent project.
    Thanks and regards
    Keith

  • HELP! : Captivate noobie here...

Hi all, I am a first time user of Adobe Captivate.
I have installed the latest version 5.5 and started making movies (screencast) for a system's CBT (computer based training).
Then they told me that we have a template to use where we should put the movies-- the problem is, the template is in Captivate 4 and my movies are in Captivate 5.5!
    The result is non-stop blinking
--> The template is not a .cptl but a whole folder with subfolders like cp (for captivate files), doc (for system notes, docs), img (for image files), src (not sure what this is for) and xml (for xml file).
the folder also consist of ActiveContent.js and ofcourse the .exe
What we have to do to use the template is to put out captivate files inside the cp subfolder, modify the XML file for the (for the dropdown menu ahown in the .exe), and automatically, the output .exe will change.
Can anyone tell me what to do to make the .cptx files play properly (and not just continuously blink) within the .exe file?

A Flash project file is also compiled for a specific version of ActionScript (2 or 3) as well as a specific version of Flash Player (e.g. 7,8,9, or 10).
If you company "solution" is several years old, it's quite possible it was originally developed for earlier versions of Flash Player that did not support AS3.  E.g. Flash Player 7 or 8.
Captivate 4 could do either AS2 or AS3 content.  Captivate 5 and above are ONLY AS3.  One of the side effects of trying to mix non-compatible AS versions is often the flickering behaviour you mention.
Now since your boss has already ruled out going back to using Captivate 4, that leaves only one option: Upgrade the framework that plays the Captivate output so that it will handle AS3.  And that means republishing or redeveloping that framework.
