Captivate Dreamweaver Tutorial

I am developing a series of educational websites designed to
support the needs of staff and students. The subject site I'm
currently working on is Media Studies and it contains a unit on Web
Design & Web Conventions along with New Technologies.
I'm looking for someone who knows Dreamweaver inside out and
could put together a Captivate tutorial / demo / assessment
resource to help staff and students learn how to create a website
and pick up the codes and conventions of web layout, design,
interactivity, etc.
I'm thinking about focussing on Dreamweaver because it
appears to be industry-standard and this would be great for
students moving in to work requiring web design.
If you think you might be interested, please get in touch.
Kind regards, Richard Gent

I'd love to but fear I don't know DW well enough to meet
expectations.
If you haven't yet, ask in the DW forum. Captivate is easy
enough to
grasp. Most folks who really know DW 'inside and out' should
have an
easy enough time using it.
If not, they can always post here for help! ;-)

  • Any good Dreamweaver tutorial videos (not free online ones)?

    I'm tired of trying to find decent online tutorial videos of Dreamweaver. I'd be willing to pay for something that really covered DW in-depth, and not like a weekend crash-learning course. Thanks.

    Why does it have to be video???

    There are some excellent, free written tutorials right here that get into DW depth. But I caution you, to be successful with DW you'll need to learn basic HTML and CSS code first.  Once you've got that under your belt, DW is a piece of cake to work with.

    Hi bugmenow,
    I disagree, video tutorials aren't always easy to use. You
    have to stop them all the time and if you don't want any sound (for
    example at your work) it isnt possible to use video tutorial. Next
    to that there aren't so many video tutorials as normal

  • Dreamweaver Tutorial - CSS to style contact form not showing in Browser

    Hi I have followed the tutorial on
    http://dreamweaverspot.com/css-dreamweaver-web-forms/.
    It worked well so far in Dreamweaver all the changes are done,
    however not after I have uploaded the page to the server. If you
    look on www.theoldfort.com/contact.htm you can see only the border
    the other styles are not being shown and the border is too wide. I
    tried to make it narrower but didnt succeed.

    Styling form elements is like nailing jelly to the wall....

    Dreamweaver Templates, Library Items and Server-Side Includes allow you to manage repeating sections of your web pages in a central file. This series of tutorials listed below will help you to deploy your Pop Menu Magic 3 menu using any of these methods. They will also serve as a general foundation in understanding the most popular site-wide techniques deployable in a Dreamweaver-managed site.
    The tutorials are relevant for Dreamweaver versions MX2004 up to and including Dreamweaver Creative Cloud.

    Unfortuantely sourcelabs.com does not give the option of testing IE11 on windows 7 so I cant be of much help here.
    One thing you might want to try is floating the <li> tags - add the below to your css stylesheet.
    li {
    float: left;
    margin: 0;
    padding: 0;
    list-style: none;
    width: 20%;
    David Powers is pretty good when it comes to his tutorials and they are usually thoroughly tested. As I say in a simulated windows 8.1 envrionment in IE11 the nav looks fine BUT of course its better to test in the real thing.
    EDITED: Try the below combination of css if you have no success finding a solution:
    #mainnav ul {
        list-style-type: none;
        margin: 0px;
        padding: 0px;
    #mainnav li {
        list-style-type: none;
        margin: 0px;
        padding: 0px;
        float: left;
        width: 20%;
         background-color: #4D4D4D;
         text-align: center;
    #mainnav a {
        display: block;
        width: 100%;
        background-color: #4D4D4D;
        color: #FFFFFF;
        text-transform: uppercase;
        padding-top: 6px;
        padding-bottom: 6px;

  • Linking Captivate 5 tutorial with two other tutorials that have assessments in an LMS

    Our HR department recently bought an online LMS system and have never used it.  I've create a tutorial, basically an introduction to a new time management system.  At the end of this tutorial our employees will click a button to take them to either the exempt or non-exempt tutorials to view. Both the exempt and non-exempt tutorials have an assessment built in.
    How do I link these two tutorials to the introduction tutorial so that the LMS will recognize the links when I upload them?  The LMS system requires each tutorial be zipped before uploading.  Any help would be tremendously appreciated as they want this to go live Monday!

    You likely can't do that.
    You might be able to if your LMS supports SCORM 2004's 'sequencing' capability. Ask your LMS vendor if they do.
    IF they do, then you have to work out how they implement it and ensure your manifest properly directs the user to the correct lesson... I've never done that, so no idea how that should be implemented...
    In most cases, however, such pathing is something you setup in the LMS itself. For example, in our LMS, you would setup two groups - one for exempt personnel and one for non-exempt personnel.
    Group 1 (exempt) would be assigned, or otherwise have access to, the Intro tutorial lesson, then the exempt assessment; so two separate lessons, perhaps the second locked until completion of the first.
    Group 2 (non-exempt) would be assigned or otherwise access the same Intro tutorial lesson but then the non-exempt asssessment.
    How you set that up, however, depends on your LMS.... It would likely be the easier way to do it...

  • Edit / delete MySql records using dreamweaver Tutorial

    is there any tutorials out there to show the edit & delete records, i can add records into a mySql database, then when i try and edit the list whatever record i try to edit off a edit list it just takes me to the first record on the database? instead of the record i have selected?
    any ideas would be appreciated
    Thanks

    I know of a great book that you would really benefit from. I got started on php/mysql with it. Sometimes the author contributes on this forum too. It is called PHP Solutions by David Powers. It is way better than any simple tutorial.
    If you are actually trying to learn php/mysql this book is going to be one you will reference frequently and find what you are looking for.
    Good luck. Check out amazon, they usually have it for pretty cheap (about 30 USD).

  • Can't use Dreamweaver tutorial...

    ...The initial screen, which presents several rectangular to display the tutorials don't work.  Instead of the usual black colored background with a "start arrow" to start the video, each box had a light grey background with a small "frowny face" in the center.  Clicking on it does nothing.

    Thanks for reply David.  Hmmm.  Well, I can play other videos under the "getting started" link in DW.  Also able to surf np.  But have tried many times, (including just now), with the same results.  I'll check on my end.  Maybe we can touch base on this again on Monday.

    Hmm, that's strange because the validator didn't pick up any coding errors... but happy for you that you found an error - that's progress !!  :-)
    Thanks Nadia for recommending this tutorial. very informative. Now to see if I can try and fix all my website errors!
    You're more than welcome.  Doing tutorials step by step is a good way to learn instead of plunging in the deep end and trying to create a site without now at least the basics.

  • Captivate to dreamweaver to phonegap

    I currently have an app that I am building on dreamweaver and exporting using phonegap build...
    I would like to incorporate some content created on captivate but when I try to build the app with the captivate files it is too big to build...(and there are only 5 questions and no video or audio)...wondering if anyone has gone this route of captivate-dreamweaver-phonegap and if so what settings are best for this workflow...thanks

    Hello There,
    Which version of Captivate and Dreamweaver are you using? I was also experiencing size limit of 10mb during DW CS5.5 but it should not be the case with CS6. Meanwhile, can you try making captivate output within 10mb and see if it helps?
    Thanks,

  • Can this tutorial also work on dreamweaver mx2004?

    i have checked dreamweaver tutorial on building news website. the link to the tutorial is http://www.adobe.com/devnet/dreamweaver/articles/first_dynamic_site_pt1.html well the tutorial was for CS5, but i applied it with mx 2004 and i follow every procedure but i have failed in some parts as i will mentioned below:
    updating the post---- i have created a page to update post as it(the tutorial) says, but when i clicked the update post, nothing is updated, it remains just the same post as before posted. Notice...i applied the update record server behaivior and i made sure i folow every step.
    deleting post---- i have also created the delete post page and applied the delete record server beh. but when i click delete it sends me to the delete.php(page whic contains the server behav. of delete record) and it does not delete the post and it does not redirect me to the page i asked it to.
    NB.
    there is also manage post page which all posts are listed which contains the Edit and Delete link which lead to update post and delete post respectively.
    can you guys help me out, or it does not work with mx2004

    MX2004 is over 6 years old now. And while it doesn't have all the sleek new features found in current versions of DW, you can use it for dynamic site development.  However, I think you'll have better results if you use a tutorial written for your particular product.

  • Is there a way to convert from Flash to Dreamweaver???

    Hi,
    this is my first forum question on here, so I hope I am explaining this okay.
    I have a Flash website ready to go and what I would like to do (after the recent news about flash I was advised to change it) is export the file to dreamweaver and load to my website that way.
    Is there a way to either
         1. open flash files through dreamweaver and make active
         2. just open working .psd files through dreamweaver and make active there.
         3. just continues useing flash(??)
         4. Just change the .file name in my folder???(is that possible, I doubt it)
    If there isnt any way to convert this file, can someone suggest a good dreamweaver tutorial or something thats helpful
    Thanks!

    Hi, Welcome to the Dreamweaver forum.
    Try this:

    It's limited in what it can do.  But it might be enough for you to squeak by.

  • HELP With Dreamweaver Contact Page

    I what I want to do is once the user fills in the form like the attachment.  The user clicks the submit button and then a "contact us" webpage opens in the browser and their name and stuff populates a regular contact us webpage made like this http://dreamweaverspot.com/adobe-dreamweaver-tutorial-contact-forms/ is what I am following.  In the attachment have the user enter their name (John Doe) and click a done button and have John Doe appear on the Dreamweaver form.  Then use something like formmail.php so when the user clicks send email their info is already entered and all they have to do is click the button
    PDF File Here

    I don't use GoDaddy but the comments below the tutorial did seem to indicate that there were problems with email.
    GoDaddy is a very good registrar. I, personally would not recommend them for hosting, having on numerous occasions seen clients and potential clients with websites that did not load, loaded slowly, seemed to not work and so on. If they're limiting what you can do with php (or any server-side code) without making a clear alternative for you, then they're too limited to use for a website. And that comment is not aimed at GoDaddy, it's aimed at any web hosting provider that limits their clients in some way that makes websites not work.
    If you know ASP or ColdFusion a web host that does not provide that kind of support is not for you.
    I would mention that you can create a complete form without doing any programming for a web host that supports php on the formmailmaker.com website. You can also find good php code in all sorts of places that will make just about anything you need.
    And if you're still stuck, you can hire someone to do that kind of work.

  • Connecting to database via Dreamweaver

    Hi All
    I am trying to build a site using asp.net and SQL Server via
    Dreamweaver.!!!! To help me on my way I decided to build a tiny
    test site just to establish the connections. However, try as I
    might I can’t make a connection to a database and am now
    rapidly loosing the will to live due to the quite unbelievable time
    I have spent trying to sort this out. Now this post is my last best
    chance.
    I am trying to connect to either of the databases that come
    with the freebee SQL Server package (Is it called express or
    something?). They are pubs and Northwind.
    I am using Dreamweaver 8, XP Professional with the .Net
    framework v2.0 and IIS.
    However, when testing the connection in Dreamweaver I get a
    choice of two different error messages depending on my
    computer’s mood (I don’t change ANYTHING) The first is
    the beautifully succinct and entirely unhelpful “an
    unidentified error has occurred”. The second reads:
    1) There is no testing server running on the server machine
    2) The testing server specified for this site does not map to
    the
    ttp://Localhost/RootFolder/_mmServerScripts/MMHTTPDB.asp URL,
    Verify that the URL Prefix maps to the root of the site.
    After more hours trawling the net for answers, than I care to
    admit to I decided in desperation to try out the Dreamweaver
    tutorial that deals with these things (Café Townsend) to see
    if it offered any clues. However, when attempting to connect to the
    database (tutorial.mdb) I get the same two error messages:
    “an unidentified error has occurred”.
    1) There is no testing server running on the server machine
    2) The testing server specified for this site does not map to
    the
    ttp://Localhost/MySampleApps/_mmServerScripts/MMHTTPDB.asp
    URL, Verify that the URL Prefix maps to the root of the site. Again
    dependent on my computer’s mood.
    I am convinced that I have all the necessary components in
    place and my connection strings are correct (I am aware that the
    path given in the Dreamweaver tutorial for Café Townsend is
    incorrect and have altered the string accordingly).
    I now strongly believe the problem is something to do with
    the MMHTTPDB.asp file in the _mmServerScripts folder but could
    easily be wrong.
    Does anyone know of a problem with Dreamweaver of this nature
    or one that would result in my error message for either an Access
    database or a SQL Server database?
    I know Dreamweaver MX had a problem viewing database tables
    whilst using .net and Adobe created a patch to fix the problem. Has
    Dreamweaver 8 any similar problems?
    I’m sorry this post is a bit long but trust me I could
    have made it three times as long if I included everything I have
    tried to resolve this!
    Any help in the right direction would be appreciated more
    than you can imagine.
    Cheers
    Burnsie

    Sorry for jumping into the thread with a bit of an off topic question, but how do you find out what kind of a db the asp server is using? I've asked my company's web host a number of times for info/help in getting connected using Dreamweaver so I can redesign our site and I never hear back from them. It's a very specialized web hosting server set up for rubber stamp web sites. Looks like most of their customers use the online website design tool that they provide, but it is very limited in what it can do. Very limited.
    They give me ftp access and I've changed what I can on the page, but with out access to the db it's hard to really change the look of the site.

  • David Powers' tutorial, "Setting up CF development environment for DW"

    I left this comment for Mr. Powers at the end of his tutorial and was advised to post here by the Moderator:
    I had no problems until the very end:  can’t display the final page in Live View or in any browser.
    One anomaly in the CF installation:  Adobe strongly advises running the CF 9.0.1 update [ http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/849/cpsid_84973.html ].  I ran this update after completing your installation procedure and before “Setting up in DW” for the Mac.  The “Update successfully installed” window included the following message:
    “SolR server has been upgraded. Re-index all the collections.”
    Having no idea what that meant, I proceeded to create the CF site in DW.  No variations from your text until Item #9, “Create a ColdFusion data source”:  my text box was labeled “Database FOLDER,” not “Database File” per your tutorial.
    Where did I go wrong?
    Mac Pro Intel, OS 10.6.7, MAMP installed but not running at the time.
    Can anyone here help me?

    ilssac wrote:
    WolfWB wrote:

    Not nearly enough of the CORRECT information here to provide any sensible help.
    Code snippet (small, but relevant sample code showing the problem.... not entire page dumps)
    Description of expected results
    Description of actual results, including error messages if relevant.
    Description of why the actual results are not correct if it is not clear to the casual observer.
    WolfWB wrote:  “SolR server has been upgraded. Re-index all the collections.”
    SOLR is a text search engine that is included with ColdFusion to provide, you know, text searching capability.  When you upgraded to the newer version of CF, that included upgrades to the SOLR engine which would have invalidated any text search indexes previously created.  So you would need to re-index the text collections to recreate those indexes.
    If none of that makes ANY sense to you, then you most likely have NO text Collections with NO indexes for those collections and thus have NOTHING to re-index so that message PROBABLY had NO relevance to any issues you are experiencing.
    First, thank you for trying to help, ilssac!  I apologize for the frustration I caused, but this was my first encounter with CF;  I'd installed it purely to get through a Dreamweaver tutorial.  Second, I haven't a clue about where to collect a code snippet to send you.  Providing a link to the tutorial and pointing you to the very last instructions are the best I can do:  start at the subhead, "Create a ColdFusion data source," steps #1 through #13 and Figures #22 and #23.  The expected result is a correct DW Live View display of the HTML page populated with data drawn from a database (Fig. #23)  instead of the "dynamic text objects" (Fig. #22).
    Regarding the SolR, you're undoubtedly right about nothing having been created in CF, ergo nothing to re-index.
    FYI, the original CF installation was on my Mac Pro.  I did exactly the same installation -- in exactly the same way (per the tutorial) -- on my MacBook Pro, and got the same result.  The tutorial predates the 9.0.1 upgrade which looks to me, the absolute CF novice, like the source of the problem.  I'd still like to get it to work, if only to justify the time I've put in!
