Captivate interactivity in AVI.

A customer who provided internal training using Captive 4 and SWFs asked me a question about Captivate 5 and switching to AVIs that seemed so ridiculous that I had to ask about it.
Is it true to say that you can't have Captivate interactivity in AVI, such as the control bar and quizzes, and LMS interaction ... that the AVI just a movie, period, and you get whatever controller provided by the player?
To me, that is the case. But the reason I asked is because they spent a boatload of money on this new delivery platform that to think that in all of the meetings they must have had (which I was not a part of) to prepare for it, that this matter never came up.  In other words, it astounds me to think that no one asked, that I must be the one who is wrong.

Hi Tim,
AVI is a video format,  no interactivity for sure.

  • Tracking captivate interaction within AW

I been working on this project for a very long time and I've
hit just about every snag possible (I'm sure we all have at some
point). Most of the time I can figure it out and fix it. This time
I just can't seem to get it right. I use the Captivate KO in
authorware with a test I developed in Captivate. I just use AW in
this case to track all ineteractions and track whether the student
got each each question right or wrong. The problem is that it never
tracks every interaction. The score is always right, but sometimes
it leaves out a couple of "c"s or "w"s. I desparately need
assistance. Maybe there is another way to output the results of
each interaction (anyway besides email). I also have access to
Moodle. I can use that to get the scores but not sure how to get
each interaction. I have Access but no cold fusion
    experience.

    jbhilt25,
Make sure you are reporting all interactions. You can also
    check this
example (I haven't looked at it in a while nor did I look at
    your issue,
    yet):

  • I have created an interaction to show 7 groups and 7 clickable objects. Once all are click the Next Button is show. How can you make that work if you want to embeded the SWF just created but show a button in a master Captivate?

In flash you can have a shell that has the navigation and some button in the shell are not activated until all clickable objects are clicked.  I am not a flash programmer but it was related to using the path of shell and the sub-project.
Can anybody help me on that.
I would like to create Captivate interaction that you can just embedded in a Shell captivate project.
Do I need to set variables at both levels (Global variable.

Hello Lieve, That is the screen shot of my custom interactivity, when all labels are clicked the Continue button will be shown because there is a conditional validating if all Labels have now a value of 1. What I am trying to achieve is to create an interaction where where the continue button (an the back button would reside in another Captivate project. This way there is no reprograming required or use of share-actions.  Everytime we use a similar advanced action or a shared action we have to make sure the object name in the advanced actions or conditional actions are not the same.  I trying to make it a bit dump proof for somebody that does not know any thing about advanced  action and just reuse the label interaction in may projects.  (The only thing they would change would be the image and the content of the label.
Do you thing I going in the right direction.  (As I said before I have custom javacript in Captivate 5.5) to unlock un button that was part of the LCMS ForceTen). I belive the word .this was part of the object path in the JavaScript.  Can we hide and show a Captivate button.
I have embedded other Captivate animation in a Master Captivate but the objets were not talking to each other. (You can see a sample http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Erm4_qdybiA&feature=youtube_gdata). In that sample the continue is always there and can be click anytime.  The 3 steps animation has been done as another project and embedded in my main captivate.  I would like to implement a solution where a my 7 labels have to be clicked in the subproject before showing and enabling the Continue button.
I hope my explanation is clear enough.

  • Localize interaction widgets in captivate 6

I'm using an English installation of Cp6 and would like to incorporate some of the standard captivate interaction widgets into lessons for high school students. However these lessons will have to be fully in Dutch and all of the widget parts need to be localized. The foremost parts (strings) can be edited into the right language from the design mode. But there are still some parts that can not be changed; for example in the word search interaction (see picture). Since the fla sources are not available to me these strings can not be changed. My question now is if I obtain a license for the Dutch version of Cp6 will i also get a fully translated set of interaction widgets? Or are there other work arounds I could use?
    TIA for any answer!

There is no Dutch version of Captivate and localisation has never been considered very important IMO. Have been complaining already a lot about that. There are no Dutch TTS, translation of the TOC is cumbersome and translating those interactions is not possible. Please, add your voice to me and other international users (Dutch is also my native tongue) by entering feature requests. Only the requests that do get a lot of support will make it in future versions.

My workaround is to add instructions in Dutch, either with a previous slide, or with a text caption or using Voice Over

  • What is the best way to publish to avi, using Captivate 4

I am trying to insert some Captivate simulations into another product for publication. Unfortunately, the swf files (my preferred option) do not play nicely with the other product. It has been recommended that I insert movies rather than swf files. I have been trying to publish via Captivate 4 to avi with unsatisfying results. If I use the default Indeo video format, I usually get an undefined error (even when resizing to all odd numbers or all even numbers). I can actually get an avi file to publish when using the Cinepak Codec; however, the video quality is rather poor. Also, I find that while the recorded narration files are okay, any background audio (typing and mouse clicks) get out of sync the longer the file runs.
I've seen some recommendations on installing XVid, but I tried that and could not figure out how to use it. If I install and reboot will it become an option with Captivate or will I need to use it in some other manner? (I'm not very techie about stuff like this).

Well...that's not encouraging. Maybe that sort of result is why publishing to such movie formats are no longer an option in Captivate
Of all those results, the audio sync I've seen before - it's a difficult process, apparently, to keep audio in sync when not publishing to a Flash format.
So, can you publish to FLV, then convert that to a different format? You may have better luck. There are many such converters out there. I've had luck with this for similar needs in the past:
    http://www.erightsoft.com/S6Kg1.html
OR, of course, if you can publish to FLV and just use that file format for integration into "another product for publication", that would seem optimal...
Let us know how it goes...

  • Published .avi from Captivate is shorter in Adobe Media Encoder

I published 8 slides from Captivate 4 to .avi video format.  When I play the .avi in Windows Media Player, it works great.  I'm using Adobe Media Encoder to convert it to .flv file to use in my Flash project.  When I import the .avi to AME, it's shorter and the audio on the last slide is cut off.  I tried inserting a duplicate slide with silent audio in Captivate to extend the duration by 10 seconds.  Still, the .avi is 2:57 in length and when I import it to AME it's 2:47.  It makes no difference if I extend the last silent slide to even 25 seconds.
Is this an issue with AME or with Captivate 4?  How do I fix it?
    Thank you!

Here's the info I can provide at this time:
Yes, it seems that this only affects .avi files published from Captivate.  Other .avi files reflect the correct length when imported to AME.
    Using AME CS4 4.2.0.006.
    Using Captivate CS4 4.0.0.1596.
Yes, it happens with every .avi file published from Captivate.  I've tried the following and still the last slide (#8) was cut off at the end including its audio:
extended last slide (#8) for more than a minute after the audio stops
extended the audio on the last slide (#8) by inserting silence for additional 30 seconds
added another slide (#9) after the last slide
added another slide (#9) after the last slide with 30 seconds of silent audio
I did find a temporary solution, however.  I added a transparent object (rectangle) a few seconds after the audio ended on slide 8 and when I published to .avi, Captivate recognized the added object and published the video to include the added animation.
You may download a zipped file containing the Captivate project and the published .avi from here:

    Thank you,
    Artur

  • Adding full screen code into Captivate 5's basic Button Widget

    Hi everyone!
I was able to create a full screen button in Flash that works with Captivate 5 projects, however, I want to be able to active the full screen feature for every button created using the basic 'button' widget that comes with the Captivate program.  I am not a AS3 programmer so I think my issue is that I am confused as  to where to place the full screen code into the existing 'button widget'  code. • I need to access the quiz variable in Captivate 6

Is there any way to set the final quiz score in CP6 using either an advanced action or by using AS3 in Flash?
We use a lot of custom interactions that are created in Flash and we need to use the scores from those interactions as quiz scores. So far i haven't found a Captivate variable that I can set from Flash, to record a quiz score that can be reported to our LMS.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

My suggestion would be that you look into coding your Flash interactions as Captivate Interactive Widgets.  That way you can assign the score in Captivate and just set the interaction up to either register Success or Failure to achieve the score.
The WdigetFactory API is the most popular way to achieve this:

  • Importing interaction into InDesign

I understand that the Captivate 7 interaction must first be put into Edge Animate and saved as OAM file before importing it into InDesign, but I don't know how to import a Captivate interaction into Edge Animate. If anyone knows steps for how to do this I'd greatly appreciate it.

I don't think that's true. I don't know if you can save the interaction by itself but you certainly can save the Captivate file after you get it working and import it into InDesign.
Can you tell us exactly what you're trying to do? In the meantime, check out this blog post from Pooja...it's excellent:

  • Widget (interaction) titles and descriptions

On Captivate interactions (widgets) such as WordSearch and Glossary, one finds 'title' and 'description' on the header. I can alter the other variables in these interactions, but I can't figure out how to add my own title and description. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi,
As Lilybiri suggested, you can first edit the buttons/content and then edit the Title and Description. This works every time for me.
You can change the button text in an easy way just by double clicking the circled area below.
Content linked to buttons can be changed in the same way by double clicking. The changes get reflected in the Captivate stage when you click on OK.
If you are still facing issues, please mail the source file to [email protected] so that we can look into it.

  • Captivate to IPOD

Hello, please forgive me if this question is posted elsewhere.
Is there a way to convert a Captivate interactive training module to an IPOD and keep the interactivity? Just looking at some other ways to incorporate training.
    Thanks

I haven't had a chance to give it a try yet, but I recently found
a tutorial on just that topic complete with file samples  on the Adobe site.
Mobile learning: Adobe Captivate content on video iPod devices
    by Silke Fleischer
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/captivate/articles/ipod.htmlhttp://www.adobe.com/devnet/captivate/articles/ipod_02.html
it appears she suggests a third party .swf to video file converter, but this is a 2008 tutorial...perhaps there is an easier way.
You can see a Captivate presentation on an older model ipod in the article (and both .cp and .mov files are included in the download)...I believe windows mobile is mentioned as well. At a glance it appears worthy of a second look. I'd love to know if any others have tried it out..
"It's extremely easy to convert an Adobe Captivate project into a passive video file using Sothink's SWF to Video converter"
...and there is a method described for a somewhat interactive version that is a bit more time consuming.
Perhaps we're close to being able to include the interactive element?...peace on earth and flash on my ipod = a perfect world

  • I got Articulate Engage into Captivate but am now stuck

I am able to make an Articulate Engage interaction into a Captivate file, I don't know what to do with it after that.  This engage interaction is just a piece of a tutorial, not a stand-alone learning object.  I was hoping I could publish it as a Captivate file and then stick it in Adobe Presenter like I normally do with Captivate interactions (using insert swf in the presenter tab).  However, it is not working.  It just looks like it is loading.  I understand there are dependent files that must be involved in this process somehow, but I don't understand what I need to do with them.  Any assistance is appreciated.  I also would be fine with putting my ppt into Captivate if that is easier.  I tried that and it just skipped over the slide that was supposed to have the engage interaction on it (with the animation) but maybe I didn't publish it to the right place to find those dependent files.
I followed these instructions to make engage into captivate http://blogs.adobe.com/captivate/2009/05/shifting_to_adobe_elearning_su_2.html so no need to refer me to there or another similar forum I found on here.
    Thank you in advance!
    April

    Hello,
I had the same problem!  The solution I did was to copy and paste the contents of the published Engage (or Quizmaker) main folder into the published Captivate folder.  I pasted a screen shot of how the published Captivate folder should look for it to work; The Captivate project is named Captivate file Testing Quiz maker, and you can see all of the published quiz files pasted into the Captivate published folder:
    Hopefully this helps!

  • Captivate, Presenter, or both?

I'm currently using the trial version of Adobe Captivate and Adobe Presenter with serious considerations to purchase and was wondering if I needed both or just Captivate? I create eLearning courses, which go into a customized LMS system (SCORM 1.2) with reporting capabilities for thousands of people (used a different software program previously).
When in Presenter, I found I need to publish a Captivate interaction as an .swf then import into Presenter. When in Captivate, I found I can import my PPT slides into Captivate. So I know I can make it work either way. But as far as which is better to be compatible with an LMS that is SCORM 1.2 compliant, does anyone have any ideas?
If I DO need Presenter, these are the issues I need to resolve, but cannot seem to find any answers:
    Presenter issues
    1) Some text on a number of slides (inevitably) becomes blurred when I publish
    2) TOC cannot be modified (i.e. showing only segment of topics at a time, till they reach the next segment)
    3) No bookmarking features (have user come back to where they left off)
    4) Only one quiz can be tracked/inputted into course, but our courses all have a Pre-Test AND a Post-Test
    5) Animations are extremely slow, even when I increase animation speed
    6) Some of the image formatting features don't work (for example, I put soft edges on an image, then when I publish, it comes out with very defined edges)
    Thanks,
    Susan

PIP is available in Presenter Video Creator, not in the normal Presenter plug-in. It is not available in Captivate normal projects with extension cptx. You can insert a PIP in the TOC, but have to record it separately.
In Captivate HD Video Demo, extension cpvc (which is also a video creator with a dedicated video editor) you can insert a PIP in the editor. But again you have to create it separately.
The choice is up to you: an easy way to have both recordings together, with very limited editing possibilites in Presenter. Or the Captivate way, more work, better editor.
Afraid to repeat again: we are only talking about pure video now. In the normal Captivate files, that are based on slides, you can insert a video (like a PIP) and distribute it over slides, adapting the slide markers is available  in the Video menu. No webcam recording for the moment in Captivate.

  • Converting from swf to avi or mpg?

I've been searching for a way to convert the swf file that is
generated in Adobe Captivate to an avi or mpg.. but every
tool/converter i have tried fails to do the job for one reason or
    another..
Is there a converter project out there that works?
    Thanks

You could publish as an exe and convert that to AVI.
Go to this web site for a tool that also converts SWF
    http://converter-exe-flash-avi.qarchive.org/
or Google SWF to AVI for a list of sites with that software.
I only did the search, I do not have any experience using any of
    these.
