Capture 23.98 DVX100A 24PA footage to Offline PhotoJPEG (2:3:3:2)?

I have a massive amount of footage that i would like to capture for an offline edit, which was shot in 24PA on the DVX100A. I would like to capture using the (2:3:3:2) pulldown method and compress using PhotoJPEG. To set this up I duplicated the Sandard NTSC DV (2:3:3:2) and set the compressor to Photo-JPEG and the frame size to Multimedia Large (4:3), just like the "DV to OfflineRT NTSC (Photo JPEG)," setting.
When I capture to footage the video remains in 29.97, which throws off the online edit.
I know it is not the tape or the deck, I was able to capture 23.98 successfully using the standard DV (2:3:3:2) setting.
Anyone know why using Photo-JPEG makes the pulldown ineffective?
System:
PowerMac Dual G5 2.3
1.5GB RAM
OSX 10.4.7
FCP 5.1 Studio
All updates

I have duplicated the NTSC OfflineRT PhotoJPEG preset and turned on the remove pulldown option as well and this also does not yield a 23.98 file?
Anyone know why the PhotoJPEG codec cannot do 23.98 while using the "Remove pulldown" capture option?

  • 24pa footage taken offline when pulldown is removed!?

here's my situation. I shot a bunch of interviews using my JVC GY -HD100 and dr-hd100 (firestore hard drive recorder), recording 24pa dv footage. The record function on my dr-hd100 was set to dv recorder and quicktime (this is before I figured out that I could use the new quicktime 24p format). Then I brought all my clips into FCP, and spent a bunch of time separating them into subclips.. w/o removing the advance pulldown... then as I start bringing them into the 24p timeline, I see the little red line come up, and remember that I need to remove the pulldown frames. So I select the clips then choose "remove advance pulldown" from the tools menu... fcp spends some time "verifying the cadence" and when it is done some of the clips are now offline... don't ask me why!
When I "Analyze Clip" for both the files that went offline, and those that didn't it says the same thing NTSC at most quality 23.98 fps etc for most of the offline clips as it does the online clips. Then for a few clips that had gone offline it says "this is not a movie that can be analyzed".
What is stranger is that when I go to "reconnect media" and find the original clip on my hard drive, the name matches and everything but FCP won't let me connect the clip. When I analyze the file on my hard drive by selecting tools>analyze movie>file and selecting the quicktime file on my hard drive it wont even give me an analysis window.
this has to be an issue with final cut, no? I am running 5.1.4
    anyone's thoughts would be appreciated
    peace

    Welcome, Ace.
I kinda do not think that camera uses the advanced pulldown technology when recording 24p. This is something you should scour your camera and firestore manuals for.
Secondly, NTSC is the standards council for 601, Standard Definition tv. ATSC is the standards council for itu-709, High Definition television, although, I've read reports that JVC cams utilize 601 colorspace for some of their "High Definition" video (I've not been able to confirm this independently so it shouldn't be considered gospel). Not that any of this helps your issue.
I do not work with HDV (thank my lucky stars) nor this camera so I can't be the expert here but I would point you in the direction of the capture and pulldown removal techniques used. May want to revisit your procedures.

  • Alternative to capturing 24p from dvx100a, ie capture 24p from a cheap cam

    Hey all,
I have been using my dvx100a for nearly a year now to capture my footage to fcp5.1. I dont have a deck becuase I cannot afford one right now. Today, i have been logging a great deal of footage and my friend brought his sony vx2100 to log footage and we have been able to capture 24pA all day long from it.
So it got me thinking. Does anyone know of any cheap consumer model cameras that can capture 24pA instead of using the DVX100a all the time? I know my friend tried a panasonic dinky one, i think the chrome shiny one and he could not log footage. I know the sony vx2100 is quite a high end camera compared to what they sell at Best Buy but even buying a $400 consumer camera opposed to a $1600 deck that can capture the 24pA seems realistic and affordable.
    Thanks all,
    Tim

but the question is if any of those cameras will be able to read the pulldown flag to remove it. i am going to get that cheap camera my friend has and test it out to see what works.
    thanks,
    Tim

  • HELP! - Getting RAW footage into Offline RT jpeg project

I hoping someone can write down a brief explanation of the steps needed to do this final step in the edit process.
I imported all my footage as an Offline RT jpeg format so it wouldn't take up so much space on the HD. Now I'm completely finished editing the project and need to send the raw footage back through so it can replace the Low-res jpeg stuff in the chosen cuts.
This is the first time I'm doing this and I just want to do it write, not wanting to risk hurting the project.
(I'm working with Final Cut Pro 4.5)
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks

I don't know what RAW footage is. I thought RAW as a digital photo format without compression.
On the chance you mean recapturing footage in it's original format,
    1. take the footage you have now off-line
    2. Open up Log & Capture
    3. Select all your footage in the Browser and select BATCH CAPTURE
    4. In Log & Capture make sure the settings are for the correct format for the footage you wish to capture
    5. Capture
    6. Make sure the settings of your sequence are changed to match the footage you just captured.
There is probably an easier way using media manager - but I never use MM ....
    good luck.

  • Just some more 24pA footage

But this one is unique to all the other threads I've read.
Footage is from a Panasonic HDX900, shot in DVCPROHD 1080i in 24pA mode. I captured 12 tapes from the camera that shot the footage using the DVCPROHD 1080i60 24pA preset and 13 tapes using a AJ-HD1400 deck. The tapes from the deck are fine: 23.98fps in browser, Qtime, and sequence. The ones captured from the camera are the problem: FCP reads these files as being 29.97fps. Qtime reads them as being 23.97fps, and Cinema Tools reads them as being 23.98fps. They need to be rendered in a 23.98fps sequence.
I tried using the remove advanced pulldown from the Tools menu in FCP - it gives an error about "cadence break, yada, yada" (sure you've heard that before). I can't do a Reverse Batch Telecine in Cinema Tools because it already thinks the footage is 23.98. When I try, it just says this footage has no NTSC signal. I'm in the process of re-capturing all 12 (camera) tapes unless you guys can provide me with a solution?

My Solution: I did a Batch Conform in Cinema Tools (conforming from 23.98 to 23.98, if that makes sense b/c it didn't to me) and that seems to have done the trick. All clips register everywhere now as 23.98.
Hopefully this will end up saving someone else some time.

  • Capturing 24P from DVX100a

    Hello all, a Rookie here,
I shot a feature in 24P Advanced (DVX100a). I am capturing using the advice on that "kenstone" page that shows up a lot in these threads.
Checking my footage, some of it looks a little off, timing-wise between clips. I checked the "item properties" of the clip and found that the "Format" is listed at 29.97fps. Is this correct, or should it read 23.98?
Again, my capture setting are for "DV NTSC 48 kHz Advanced (2:3:3:2) Pulldown Removal". Does "pulldown removal" in fact mean that it is capturing at 29.97?
Either way, the timeline is set at 24P, so I should be fine, I just didn't want to capture a ton of stuff and find out later that it's worthless.
I should also not that I am "Capturing Now" b/c of timecode problems.
So, I guess the question is "How am I doing?"

    Cookman, you're hilarious,
So, I forgot to mention that because of timecode problems, I had to capture as an "uncontrallable device", so I should be able to set that device up to capture at 23.98 in the preferences, right? That should fix it.
Also, I am noticing that the computer is ignoring my "anamorphic" checkboxes. All my stuff is getting read as 4:3, even though I set the preferences to anamorphic. Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

  • Panasonic 24pA footage - settings?

Does anyone know of a downloadable preset I can install for PrPro CS3 for working with footage shot using the Panasonic DVX100's 24p Advanced mode? If not, can someone specify the settings I should use when beginning the project?
It's been a while since I've edited SD, and I want to make sure I get it right.
Also, if you happen to know the answer, on a test capture, even though the footage was shot in 16:9, I couldn't get it to capture as such. Instead, it was recognizing it as 4:3, giving it that not-so-lovely squished full-screen look. Anyone know how to manually bypass this?
    Thanks for your help.

Right clicking on clips in the bin will bring up some options, one of them being Interpret Footage... There you can force the anamorphic aspect.
But capturing in the correct preset should make this unnecessary. Premiere has correct 24p presets for both Standard and Widescreen.
(As an FYI, Premiere's 24p preset is designed for use with the Panasonic 24pA mode, which suits you fine. If one shoots in normal 24p on the Panny, then one edits in a normal 30i preset, not a 24p preset.)

  • DVX100 24pa FOOTAGE ALIASED

I shot some footage on a DVX100 on 24pa mode and captured it to Final Cut with advanced pulldown (2:3:3:2). I noticed the raw captured footage looks terribly aliased, but when I exported it as Mpeg2 in Compressor, it would look clean. However, any clips that would be exported in anything but Compressor would have heavy aliasing. (I need to do this in order to import clips to After Effects). Even the final DVD shows aliasing on footages that have gone through the After Effects Route. I'm working in a 23.98 time base timeline. What am I doing wrong?

You're talking about Final Cut Pro. This is the Final Cut Express forum.

  • DVX100a 24pa Support in On Location?

When capturing with a Panasonic DVX24a using 24pa mode, is there anything special that needs to be done? I am assuming that you just capture it and then setup your Premiere Pro project as if you were pulling from tape and then just perform the interpret footage option?

    That sounds about right.

  • Capture problems with Canon HDV footage

Despite double checking all presets my FCP (5.1.4) capture window is not recognising HDV 1080i footage shot on the Canon XH A1. I'm only getting the "Unable to Initialize Capture Device" message. Firewire I'm using is working fine for DV footage. Any help VERY much appreciated !

Did you also check the settings on the camera?  Make sure it's set for proper output for the format you're trying to capture.

  • Sony F5 RAW footage goes offline when switched to slog2

I am editing in Premiere Pro CC 2014, fully updated. I have a project with only Sony F5 RAW footage and some of the clips have gone offline when I opened the project this morning. Nothing has changed and it was working yesterday. I tried several things to no avail, and decided to just reimport the effected clips (which were indiscriminate across sequences and source locations). This worked fine, until I changed the source settings for the clips to slog2 and they immediately went offline again. Any idea what's going on? I would really rather not transcode everything.

    Hi Gordon,
Could you send the project and that clip to us? We would like to have a deep look.
    I'm sending you a PM.

  • Capture Canon Legria HF R26 footage with Adobe Premiere pro cs5

    Hello,
I need to capture some footage from Capture Canon Legria HF R26 using  Adobe Premiere pro cs5.
I have a usb cable with the camera. I  would like ot know if captirng via usb is a good option or if there are other better options .
    Cheers m

Premiere can not 'capture' footage from any source using a USB connection.
Capture from tape into Premiere requires a firewire connection (DV & HDV).
For your camera, you should use the USB connection to copy the media files
from the camera to your hard drive and then 'import' the footage into Premiere.

  • Capture 1st 3 seconds of footage

During batch capture FCP likes to roll back and start the tape 3 seconds before the "in" point of the logged clip you are trying to capture which means you have to set the "in" point at least 3 seconds away from where the timecode starts on the tape, otherwise FCP gives an error and says "end of tape reached" or "can't locate" or whatever. You can probably use Capture Now but then you don't get the timecode and have no device control.
A lot of cameramen don't turn on the camera until a split second before something important is said at the beginning at event shoots. Is there any way to capture the footage - with time code - right from the beginning, and not at least 3 seconds in ??

I'm not a pro, and neither is my spouse who runs the second camera as we video school plays and events. I solve the pre-roll issue by pre-striping every tape we are going to use for at least 60 seconds using the color bar set on my camera (PDX10); then I back each tape up to the 30 seconds mark or so, and put it in the box of tapes we will be using. So ALL of the tapes on site are set at the 30 second point with proper time code, etc.
We often have to do quick tape changes when we near the end of a 60 minute tape, and the event won't stop because we have to, and there is often no time to make sure we get enough "pre-roll" on a new tape.
To me, this is all just part of proper pre-shoot set up: get the batteries charged, get all the tape together that I need, color bar stripe it and set each tape to start at 30 seconds in, label the tapes, check the mics and cables, check my equipment against my inventory to take check list, etc.

  • Imovie not importing the capture date of my dv footage

    Hi there,
I have a rather strange problem. I've got a JVC mini DV camcorder (GR-DVL 9000), which I'm connecting to my intel imac via firewire. I've got no problem importing the footage; however, imovie is not getting any date and time information for my footage. This is annoying, as the scene detection now doesn't work: everything just becomes one long clip and I have to split it up in different clips manually. Bizarrely, if I play a tape on my JVC camcorder which was shot on another camera (a canon) it DOES transmit date and time! So my camera can transmit this information; just not for any recordings made on the machine itself. If you look on the screen of the camera, though, the date and time is displayed just fine.
Anyone got any ideas? Help much appreciated; this is driving me up the wall!

The sample file you sent didn't have any capture time in its metadata; had you done Edit Capture Time in LR followed by Save Metadata To File to that image?
In my LR 5.3 (Windows 7 64-bit), I was able to import the sample file, do Edit Capture Time to change date, and then Library view and the Metadata pane are in sync.  (See screenshot below.)  I was also able to do Save Metadata To File, and the capture time was correctly written to the file's metadata.
Which version of LR and version of OS X?

  • Exporting 24pa footage

What type of file/settings should I use to export a 23.98 timeline so I can burn it to iDVD or possibly DVD Studio Pro? I have seen under settings that I can export as DV NTSC 23.98 but do I need to do that or can I just export to QT movie as normal?

File - Export - Quicktime Movie... current settings.
    That'll do it for you.
