Captured clips split in several short segments

During capturing the clips split into several segments, some very short. What could be the cause?

This is an HDV camera isn't it? Did you shoot DV on it or HDV? What is it set to output?
The camera should split clips at every shot change, and there will be some loss when that happens, so if the shots are short to start, they will be even shorter.

    Hello -
Is there a way to "Capture" miniDV tape footage into FCPX and NOT have it split the clips up by timecode / date breaks?
In other words, just have FCPX capture the whole tape as one big file.

Thanks Al ... but that's a "workaround" solution; which does work as I have done that as well.
Apparently FCPX, currently, can NOT do this simple task ... maybe / hopefully in a future update as I have submitted this as a "feature request" to the FCPX team.

  • Splitting QuickTime into shorter clips

I recently converted 1000's of feet of old family (film) movies to MPEG, and wish to ultimately bring into iMovie. How can I use Quicktime to break MPEG clips into shorter segments?
I am using 'Quicktime 7.1.0 Pro'. I see 'trim to selection' but it's not highlighted. Could someone explain how to use this so I can create shorter movie clips from a larger MPEG movie file. (much THANKS!)

I recently converted 1000's of feet of old family (film) movies to MPEG, and wish to ultimately bring into iMovie. How can I use Quicktime to break MPEG clips into shorter segments? For best quality, I would normally recommend capturing your media directly in the DV format which is already compatible with iMovie. However, assuming you are not willing or unable to go back and start over, use MPEG Streamclip (free) and the QT MPEG-2 component (which I assume you already have installed) to either "trim" and convert the source to iMovie compatible files (or convert entire master files to DV and "trim" as you edit in iMovie).

Thus, the edit options are not accessable for either MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 files. In addition, even if they were, your exported files for use in iMovie would not have any audio. Use an MPEG based third-party application for "trimming" and/or conversion to iMovie compatible compression formats which retain audio.

If you have either iMovie 09 or iMovie 11 you can do this easily using the Cutaway feature.
Go to iMovie/Preferences and make sure that the Advanced Tools are enabled.
Now you jut drag and drop the 2nd clip onto hte first clip at the frame where you want the Cutaway to start. A popup menu will appear. Choose Cutaway.
    Here is a good Tutorial.
If you have iMovie 08, let me know. There is a way to do it, but it is more complex.

I have several short movies on iMovie and want to move them into PP slots. How can I capture them?

You can do that too, it's all in the iDVD program.
But first you want to assemble the separate clips into one big long clip. For that you would use iMovie. Share to the Media Browser (choose the Large size). Let it export then quit iMovie.
Open iDVD, click on the Media button and then the Movies button. Under the iMovie star icon you will see your final assembled clips movie. In the iDVD project window turn on the map view (it's little boxes that look like a flowchart) then drag the iMovie project into the first box:
You can set the project to startup without a Menu, and then loop continuously as well. Go up to the Advanced Menu then click on the Loop movie option to turn it on.
Once checked the Loop movie status will appear as curved arrow icon in the Project Window:
In the lower right corner is the icon indicating this video clip will loop while being played.

  • Captured clips are playing back at least TWICE as fast

Hey all- I am capturing HD footage from a JVC Pro HD camera - footage shot at 24P. Everything seems fine with the capture (except for the fact that there is no device control - only capture now), but when I play back the captured clips I hear the audio playing at normal speed but the video is playing back at leat at twice the speed - all actors are in FAST motion. I hear the crew and director speaking, getting ready to shoot as I watch the scene start and speed through and end right as the clip ends.
Any ideas? Is it a setting on the OUTPUT for the camera?
    Thanks for any help.

Neither Final Cut Express nor Final Cut Pro support
720p24 material. You need a product like HDVxDV to
    bring it in.
    Tom-
Thanks for getting back to me last night. You seem to be a master in these parts. I am new here. I am really a director and writer but through my production company I have done a number of things in FCP over the years, always without any problems. That is until the introduction of HD and 24p at which time I sort of started saying to our amazing editor "whatver you say" and clouding over with confusion. After I got your message I went and got FCP 5 from the Apple store in an attempt to keep my friend, whose short we were trying to edit, from crying. Once installed and running we had the same issue as we had in FCE HD - the video - in terms of quality - was captured perfectly, but the clips would play back at almost twice the speed that they should have. I tried virtually every easy set-up that pertained to HD and nothing worked. On a few of them I could get an actual Log and Capture window to come up but when I went to play the material via device control there was no image, althoug I could see TC running. A friend suggested that you have to take the captured HD 24p clip and bring it into the timeline and render it for it to work. Is that true? I tried it to no avail. So, he shot on JVC GY-HD 100 at 24p. I now have FCP 5 HD and am considering buying LUMIERE software that purports to streamline this very issue. Any thoughts or suggestions you may have for me would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks so much,

  • Best way to shorten captured clips?

Sorry if this has been asked a thousand times, but I didn't see it in the FAQs.
I have a Canon Vixia camcorder capturing HD and stored in AVCHD format once I drag the video clips to my computer. They look great on a 30" Apple Cinema Display.
I am looking for the best way to go through my keeper video clips and clipping each end of the segment to get rid of the unnecessary footage and keeping the part of the clip I think I might ever use. Actually, I know how to clip the image, I am looking for the best workflow to go through a lot of long clips and cut them down and save them for long term storage without losing any image quality.
If I have 100 saved clips that could each be shortened, what is the best workflow in Premiere Elements 8? Which output format and settings would be best?
The original Canon files were saved with MTS extensions on a PC. My few tests tonight saved the shortened files as M2T. On the initial run through, they appear to have the same image quality when viewed on my screen.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    M. Jackson

    Hi Steve,
I think that is exactly what I did on my initial tests. I only opened one raw clip, trimmed it in the timeline, and then saved it as an MPEG. There were a few different quality options in the list and I wasn't sure which one would give me the best quality image (no image quality loss).
So, if I created a new project, dragged thirty clips into the import field, I could then put one at a time in the timeline, trim and save? Then remove the first clip from the timeline and put in another one, trim and save? I'd only need one Project and would continually be adding and deleting files in it. Seems logical with my limited experience with Premiere.
I sometimes set up a tripod with the video camera and start filming a moose resting under a fall tree. I set up another tripod and photograph him with a still camera. The video might run for 5 minutes, but have essentially nothing unique on it but maybe him shaking the leaves off his antlers. I'd only want to save that little segment and dump the other 4 and a half minutes. As another example, I might have five minutes of an Oxbow Bend sunrise in Grand Teton National Park. The only part I might want to keep is the shortened clip where a flock of geese fly through the scene.
    Thanks again,
    M. Jackson

  • Scene Detection On Previously Captured Clip?

Is it possible to split an already captured clip into scenes (much how scene detection works during capture) on a sequence timeline?

For DV, check out DVdate; you can split a DV file both by time-of-day timecode and optically. It will bust the scenes out into individual AVI files--I'm assuming you're using a Windows machine, here.
For HDV, check out HDVSplit. I haven't split an HDV stream after-the-fact, but that capability is supposedly available in HDVSplit.
    Both programs are free.

  • Capturing Clips Unsplit

When I capture clips, FCP is automatically splitting up my b-roll based on when I started and stopped shooting. How do I change my settings so that it will capture as one clip from my in point to my out point?

User Preferences > General > On Timecode Break > Warn after capture (instead of "Make New Clip")

  • I have created several short (3-5 minute) movies using iMovie 10.0.6 and Yosemite.  I want to create one movie that includes these short movies that I can then either burn to a DVD or show in iMovie's Theater.  How can I do it?

I have created several short (3-5 minute) movies using iMovie 10.0.6 and Yosemite.  I want to combine those short movies into one movie that I can loop and burn on a DVD or show in iMovie Theater.  How can I do it?  The movies are now shared to iTunes.

Another easy way to fix this.
What I've noticed is that upon upgrading your projects and events to work with iMovie 10, initially it will work... Until you quit iMovie and reopen it again. Any events with hashtags will show up without the star next to the iMovie event. SO, if you happen to read this, after upgrading to iMovie 10 from its predecessor, immediately change the event name to NOT include a hashtag/pound symbol.
Otherwise, if it's too late, you can either do the above or this...
Hold down option and click on iMovie. This will prompt you Locate, Create a New Library, Cancel this window, or Choose a different library. What you want to do is create a new library, call it whatever you want to, this will only be temporary. After the program opens, it should be a blank Library. Then go to File > Open Library > iMovie Library (your original library) and proceed to change the name of your events. Quit the program. Go into your Movies folder in Finder, delete the library you temporarily created, and your back in business.

  • Blue screen of death, surprise restarts, and some captured clips distorted, with blocky artifacts!

    Hello,
I've been using my set-up (Premiere Pro 2.0* with Cineform AspectHD) successfully for years, to capture and edit footage. But just recently, my computer has given me the blue screen of death after capturing for about 5-10 minutes or caused my computer to restart in the middle of capturing. I've also noticed that the resulting captured clips are, in some places, distorted and contain blocky artifacts. It isn't a problem with the tape because the footage plays just fine on the camera's preview monitor. I tried re-installing Premiere Pro 2.0 and Cineform AspectHD, but the problem persisted after a successful, but brief capture session (the resulting clips were still distorted and contained blocky artifacts). I have no idea what the problem is! One solution I attempted was to capture on another computer in my house, using the same software. Although I didn't get the blue screen of death or a surprise restart, the captured clips were still distorted and contained blocky artifacts in some spots. Another option I tried, with the second computer, was deselecting the Scene Detect option in the capture dialogue box. As a result, the captured clips are free of distortion and blocky artifacts, but the problem is that the captured clips are too big and very difficult to manage (I shoot a lot because I'm a filmmaker and I'm in the middle of a big project). Why is this happening?!
Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated!
*I'd use a later version of Premiere, but I spent a lot of money on Cineform AspectHD and the version of Cineform I have only works with Premiere Pro 2.0.

I agree with John T. BSOD's are most often caused hardware issues, such as overheating of a component, or a failing, or undersized PSU.
Also, general system drivers can cause failure. Often, those are outlined (though maybe not in really adequate detail) in the Event Viewer's log. In that article, that John T. linked to, there is another link to "Finding Clues." It goes into more detail on using Event Viewer to explore warning, or error messages. If your testing of your system's components and heat, do not yield a weak link, see that one (no pun intended). It is in Reply # 3.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Is it possible to delete the audio of a captured clip permanently?

I know you can drag clips to the timeline without audio, or delete the audio from the timeline.
What I'm asking is: say you captured a bunch of clips with audio tracks that you didn't want, because you forgot to uncheck the audio box.
Is there some way you can delete the audio from the captured clips, without re-capturing everything? I'd like to have them sitting in my browser, without any associated audio.
I know you can change whether audio is present in a logged (but uncaptured clip) using clip settings, but that only works before the clip is captured.

Just think about this for a minute before you launch
yourself off into this realm. The audio doesn't
really take that much space. DV video runs at 3.6
MB/sec 48khz audio runs at 192kB/s. The audio takes
    up nothing.
You're right - it's not worth the effort. It's just a minor annoyance. It would be easier to just recapture all the clips.

  • In iPhoto slide show, is there a way to splice several short tunes together to play for the show?

In iPhoto slide show, is there a way to splice several short tunes together to play for the show?

    Mike:
If you want to do a little more that string several songs together, i.e. like cutting out the lead in and out, overlapping, etc. you can try Audacity: Free Audio Editor and Recorder. Always be sure to work with copies of your audio tracks.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

iMovie 11 is not working. I try to open it and it says it is generating thumbnails for one of my previous projects. All the commands are gray. I have to force it to quit. I just want to capture clips to start a new project. I googled the problem and there were discussions about deleting files in various folders and renaming clip extensions. I don't like the solutions I saw there and I am not sure they will work.

Nobody replied so I called Apple. They seemed to think they could fix the problem but I had to agree to pay about $20 first. I told them to put it down as a complaint. I only want to use the software I bought. I can't see that it is my fault it is malfunctioning. I guess I will have to pay. It doesn't seem right.
