Catalogue creates hundreds of unwanted folder names

Twice I have attempted to create a catalogue for use and both times I have ended up with a folder list of folders I have never seen before although they do contain pictures if I open them but I don't recognise these folder names.
Any one got any ideas?
I am using a iMac with Lion 10.8.2 and all my pictures are in a folder called pictures with sub folders underneath.

It is version 11 of PSE. I dont have a screen shot as I deleted the catalogue files afterwards but it was similar to;
%5W4DD43FED4R5TT6XWW3E32W
%5X767EDDDA45992HD6287678811
PORTRAITS
2GGE4GGDRTSFSRF466HK7NBHHS
etc
i.e. occasionaly a correct sub folder would be present.
I am using LR4 as well as PSE 11 could that be influencing the outcome?
Thanks for your help BTW.

  • How do I get the right-click-on-tab - "Bookmark all tabs" to put the bookmarks in a folder of my choosing without creating a subdirectory named "[Folder Name]

Every time I create a new folder, say on the bookmarks toolbar, like "REOPEN 6-13-14" and use the "Bookmark all Tabs" function to create bookmarks to reopen later, it creates a sub directory in the new folder called [Folder Name]. If I have 4 windows open with multiple tabs and do this, it creates 4 separate [Folder Name] folders in the "REOPEN...." folder. Really want to just add all bookmarks into one big folder to reopen later.

If you use "Bookmarks All Tabs" then Firefox will always create a new folder with the name that you specify in the location that you specify.
If you do not change the default name then it keeps [Folder Name] for its name.
This also happens if there is already a folder with the same name and you thus get multiple folders with the same name.

  • Playlist:  Creating playlist using folder names (auto)

Is there a way to auto-create playlists using existing folder names? I have about 90-100 folders that I had created over the years; manually creating playlist for each folder would be a pain. I am looking for a way to auto create these playlists while iTunes is importing my folders (or otherwise). Any advice highly appreciated.

iTunes alone has no way to do that. You will need a 3rd party folder watching program.

  • Long folder names and backing up on a Windows server

So Mail creates these really long folder names in the Home/Library/Mail folder. Something like [email protected] Not usually a problem. But I just found myself in a bit of a pickle. The trouble is, I'm trying to back up the email of the Mac users in the office onto a Windows 2003 server. There is this odd and very irritating limitation with Windows servers and Macs and the number of characters allowed in a filename and/or path name.
So this is all a big set up for the question on my mind: Is it at all possible to rename those long folder names to something more succinct? I mean I know it's possible but when you do so, when you open Mail.app back up, it creates a new folder with its standard naming convention.
I have confirmed that renaming the folder manually and backing up without opening Mail.app again works just fine.
    Thanks!

I apologize. I was unclear in my description of my new problem. I have some users using Mail.app and others using Entourage. I've encountered the "file too large" problem with Entourage users. For the record, I'm using the backup program iBackup. In the log file it creates, it states that the Entourage database file is too large.
For example, one person has a 2.6GB Entourage database file. iBackup will start copying and get to around 2GB, maybe 2.1 or 2.2. It will then appear to quickly finish. Looking in the backup folder on the server, it shows the entirety of the Office 2004 Identities folder to be 96KB....
Is this some sort of weird limitation on the part of Windows Server 2003 and how it deals with communication from Macs, or is it just an issue with iBackup? I have copied much larger files using iBackup to back up to a locally-attached Firewire hard drive successfully, so I am leaning towards a strange Windows Server issue.
    Thanks for any input!

Mac OSX, 10.7.5, LR 5.6  After creating a new folder in the Destination section and importing images, the new folder name appears as 2010, no matter what name I give it.  Why is it doing this?

I am experiencing Mavericks failing to copy subdirectories from usb sticks, I am backing up game saves from a console. Both sticks I use are fine, same permissions of course since the console wrote the files. Sometimes it copies, sometimes it doesn't. It seems to be related to the mounting process.
Thank God Apple hasn't (yet) broken bash.

  • How to create folder names based on Excel values or Txt files?

    Hi there,
I often need to create large numbers of folders based on names I have saved in an Excel spreadsheet. I know in windows there is a way to create a macro within excel that automatically generates folder names based on cell values.
I was therefore wondering how to do the same on a Mac operating system. The main thing is to find a way to automate the process. I understand this may involve copying the values to a text file.
Below is an example of the names I need to create folders for (copied from the excel spreadsheet):
    Wash Bowl Small 600
    Deck Mounted Wash Bowl 500
    Wash Basin - 866 - 2 Shelves
    Wash Bowl Large 800
    Built-In Wash Basin With 1-Taphole
    Deck Mounted Wash Bowl 625
Would really appreciate a simple step by step approach to an explanation. As my understanding of using Automator, Apple Script, Terminal, etc, is extremely basic.
    Thanks and Best Wishes,

    Hi Niel,
Thanks again for another superb response. I have another question. Is it possible to automatically generate sub-folders along with the folder.
    For example:
    Folder                                                Subfolder
    Wash Bowl Small 600          >            2D CAD
                                                               3D CAD
                                                               BIM
                                                               Images
                                                               Brochures
                                                               Specifications
                                                               Technical
                                                               Case Studies
                                                               Operations
Deck Mounted Wash Bowl 500    >   2D CAD
                                                              3D CAD
                                                              BIM
                                                              Images
                                                              Brochures
                                                              Specifications
                                                              Technical
                                                              Case Studies
                                                              Operations
Above shows the 9 generic sub-folders I need to create within each folder that is generated.

  • Create and save a multipdf as folder name?

I have created a macro that takes all files in a folder and create a multi page pdf. But I want it to be saved as the folder name automaticly. How do I do?

OK, now I understand. It's not possible to automatically save the file under a specific name when doing it like that because you have no access to the paths of the files that are being combined. Also, in principle these files don't have to be all located under the same folder, so it would be technically impossible to do it anyway.
I have developed a combination of a script and an Action that does allow you to do it, but in your case it would involve many more steps than simply entering the name manually, I think.

  • When I create a new bookmark folder, the name of an existing folder is frequently changed to the anme of the new one, why?

Frequently when I create a new bookmark folder the name of an already existing unrelated folder is also changed to the same name as the new one being created. Sometimes if I am creating the new folder in "Bookmarks Menu" the existing folder who's name is changed is also in the "Bookmarks Menu". But sometimes it will be in the "Bookmarks Toolbar".
This is quite frustrating since the purpose of naming them is to identify them.

This can be a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

Did you perform a Firefox Reset either by clicking the button on the Help > Troubleshooting Information page or via the Safe mode start window?
You may have gotten the Safe Mode start window as the result of not being able to start Firefox more than once after crashes.
    See:

You can find the IDs of the submitted crash reports on the <i>about:crashes</i> page.

"Reset" creates a new default profile with a time stamp appended to identify it and tries to recover settings like bookmarks and history and passwords and cookies and auto-fill data from the old profile, but you lose data like extensions and other customizations.

Firefox 15+ versions will move the old profile folder to an "Old Firefox Data-##" folder on the Desktop that gets a number appended if you use reset more than once, so you can no longer use the profile manager to revert to the old profile.

(InDesign CS5) I have created hundreds of InDesign documents incorporating images stored on an external USB connected drive. I did a manual back-up to another drive at regular intervals but far from ideal.
I now have a network drive which is properly backed-up. I have copied all of the images and folder structure from the USB connected drive to this new drive.
My question is how I get all of the links in my indd files to point to the new drive. I am aware how to do it one file at a time, but is there a way of doing the same thing over many files/folders at a time?

It depends on how you organize your work. If you have one folder for images for a document, relinking one image should alert you that other missing images are in the same folder, but this assumes that images are missing. If the links window sees a clear path to the original location of the images, they aren't missing, so that won't work.
Another thing to try is to select all of the images in the links window and go to the fly-out menu and select Relink To Folder (navigate to the new folder, and you don't even have to select any images by name).
If you store your images in many different folders for the same document, you might want to either package the document to copy all of the images into one folder (you can specify to only copy images if you like) or use the fly-out in the links window (Utilities>Copy Links To…) and select or create a new images folder.

  • Updating Referenced Image Folder names

    Hi,
My Aperture library is a Referenced Library. My referenced images are stored on an external FW 800 drive and my file system is setup as: Folder Name/Project Name. This has worked great for me, but causes issues when I make changes to the organizational system of my library. I know that Aperture is smart enough to still link the correct files even if the folder/project system is off.
My question is: How do you keep the folder system synced and intact when using a Referenced Library after making changes to the names of Projects, etc? Is this possible? If not, what system of fouler organization works best for keeping things simple, organized and in sync with as little confusion and downtime in terms of work flow?
I'm looking for some general (and specific) ideas from users here.
    Thanks,
    Mac

The question for you is: What need are you trying to meet by mimicking in your Master file storage and retrieval structure?
    Kirby,
First, thanks for the lengthy and helpful response. In thinking about what you wrote, I probably don't need to worry about my Master file storage structure. So long as Aperture is able to find my Masters no matter the folder, project, album they sit in, I should be fine. My initial thinking was that if I wanted to access my Masters (for some reason) outside of Aperture, it would be easier for me to know where everything was. That being said, I don't really ever need to do that, as everything can be done straight from within Aperture. Still, it just makes me a little uneasy knowing that my images are organized and structured one way in Aperture and another outside of it where those images are linked to.
Don't let it make you uneasy. Even if they are all in one 55-gallon bag (or Finder folder), they are easily sorted by date (and time) taken, and by file name. These two alone -- esp. if you have renamed your Masters with a good and rigorously applied file-naming convention -- should meet every need you might have.
Moreover, your Aperture Library of images should be deeply hyperlinked. That's a big reason to use Aperture. None of those hyperlinks are create-able in a file storage system.
At the risk of being (even more) off-putting than usual: think on that. Beginning to understand that difference allows you to manage your data in much more successful ways.
The second reason I was asking is because when I import into Aperture as a Referenced Library, I also back up those images to a second external hard disk. I generally keep this back up archive organized and structured the same way as my Masters structure. If I ever deleted a Referenced Master and then later on wanted to re-import it from my back up archive, it makes it easier to find things, etc if they are organized the same way.
I don't buy it. Can you give an example of a situation in which you need to find a file and you don't know the date it was taken (at least roughly) or some part of the file name?
Your Masters need almost no storage structure at all.
IME, once I started using Aperture's extensive image management tools, I found I had almost no -- zero, nada -- file management needs beyond back-up.
If you read what I wrote just above, I guess this plays to that. How do you manage your back-up file management system if things change in ways that I have suggested, i.e. renaming projects, etc and moving things around from one project to another?
I try to keep two additional copies of every Library and every set of Referenced Masters at all times. One set is kept off-site. It's not hard to do -- but I do run copy operations that last all night. Aperture's Vault can serve as one of the Library copies. I have found it easier to manage when I don't use Vaults, so I stopped using them. If you find Vaults convenient, use them.
Just to be clear: My main goal is to make sure that my back-up file management structure mimics my Aperture Library Folder, Project, Album (well, not album as you can't organize at this time by album name) structure. I am not talking about the structure of where my Masters are stored, but rather the structure of my back-up. I hope this makes sense.
This does not make sense. +File management+ refers to Referenced Masters and not to Aperture Folders, Projects, or Albums.
Your Aperture Folder, Project, & Albums (all of 'em) structure is part of your Library. Back up your Library, and you have backed up that structure.
The files an Aperture user needs to back up are
    - your Aperture Library (an OS X package of hundreds of thousands of files)
    - all your Referenced Masters.
    That's it.

  • Unwanted folder duplicates

Something odd is happening when I use an external (via USB 2.0) drive with both my Mac Book and a friend's Windows laptop.
Occasionally an unwanted duplicate of a folder on the external drive is created - it is created in the same location in the file/folder heirarchy, and has the same name except that forward slash characters become tiny, boxed, space invaders.
    So "Folder name 16/5/07"
    becomes
    "Folder name 16507"
Also, the folder seems to behave like a mirror of the original folder. Any new files that are copied to the original folder appear in the new folder also.
How can I stop it, and how can I stop it happening again? I'm a bit wary of just deleting the new, spooky copy in case it in some way messes with the original source folder.
[I also run Win XP on the Mac Book via Parallels... don't know if that might have any bearing on the problem.]
    Paul
G5 iMac, Core Duo Mac Book   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

OK, but why is a duplicate folder being created? Just to clarify: the original folder is still there, and its name unchanged. Is it a result of XP trying to deal with the illegal charcaters by creating a kind of alias?

  • Application to grab text from folder names?

I doubt there is software for this - if there isn't there needs to be - it'd make a killing!
I'm looking for an app that can grab texts from folder names...what i mean is let's say
on my desktop I have a folder titled "Movies", and inside that folder are hundreds of folders -
each folder containing a movie.  Each folder is a title of a movie.  I would like to somehow select
all of these folders and grab the text off of each folder - to catalogue my movies into a simple text file.
I know I could open a word doc or txt doc and go one-by-one but i have thousands of movies and this
would take forever. Please tell me there is an application that can save me some time with this.
    thanks.

    Niel - you rule!
i couldn't get what you wrote to work - i tried inputting different paths, etc.  i'm probably doing something wrong -
    but i used this script
    tell application "Finder"
get name of folders of folder ("/Users/macbookpro/Desktop/movies" as POSIX file)
    end tell
    and it worked. thanks again.

  • How can I change my "Home directory" folder name?

    Hello, everyone.
I was given a pre-owned MacBook Pro that's running OS 10.6.8.  How can I change the name on the Home directory folder?  I was able to change the Administrator Account settings, but the Home directory still shows the previous owner's name.  It bothers me a bit, though, to see the previous owner's name still come up on the Home folder.
I came across the instruction listed below, but I can't get past step 4.  It instructs me "rename it just like I would rename any folder."  I can't seem to rename it, though.  The cursor doesn't come up when I click on the folder name.
For Mac OS X v10.5 or later
    Enable the root user.
    Log in as root.
    Navigate to the /Users folder.
Select the Home folder with the short name you want to change, and rename it just like you would rename any folder. Keep in mind that the shortname must be all lowercase, with no spaces, and only contain letters.
Use the Users & Groups pane (Accounts pane in Mac OS X v10.6.8 or earlier) in System Preferences to create a new user with the Account name or Short Name that you used in the previous step.
Click OK when "A folder in the Users folder already has the name 'account name'. Would you like to use that folder as the Home folder for this user account?" appears. Note: This will correct the ownership of all files in the Home folder, and avoid permissions issues with the contents.
Choose Log Out from the Apple menu.
Log in as the newly created user. You should be able to access all of your original files (on the desktop, in Documents, and in the other folders of this Home).
After verifying that your data is as expected, you can delete the original user account via the Users & Groups pane (Accounts pane in Mac OS X v10.6.8 or earlier).
    Disable the root user.
Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi everyone,
    I followed this https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3872
and got to the stage of having renamed my Home folder with the new name but the Home folder is STILL designated to the old name?
When I try and create a new user with the new name, I don't get asked if I'd like to use the existing name as Home folder, I get told I can't use the newname because it exists already - thats the end of it - no further options.
So to clarify - I now have oldname folder STILL assigned as Home folder. A newname folder with all my stuff in - apps, desktop, etc etc but this is just another user folder.
Interestingly at login stage, the oldname folder isn't an option. I think I've confused the system somewhere by titling things differently at some stage in an attempt to rename Home folder.
I'm running Mountain Lion (as of yesterday) and because I've kinda lost the use of my User folder as the Home folder, can't get to my Time Machine. I'm in trouble but I'm trying not to panic. Would appreciate any help!
