Catching Exception of a function in a procedure
Hi,
I have a procedure named P calling a function named F. If function F returns no value.. I want to catch that exception in the procedure/function itself and display to the user that the function named F has returned without any values.
Thanks in advance
A function not returning a value, is an error in the function. A bug in the function's code.
A function must return a value, or raise an exception. It cannot simply just not return a value.
E.g.create or replace function F ( n number ) return BOOLEAN is
b booloean := FALSE;
begin
.. do some stuff ..
if <some condition> then
-- an error has occured - raise an exception
raise_application_error( -20001, 'blah blah' );
end if;
return( b );
end;This code is however ugly. The RAISE_APPLICATION_ERROR is a system call. If you want to trap all calls in your code that raises an exception, you have a problem. Also, the exception number is hardcoded.
It is better to have a procedure called RaiseException and have it make the call to RAISE_APPLICATION_ERROR. This way you have a single place in all your code where this system call is made. You can easily add logging and debugging into that single place. Dump the PL/SQL stack. Etc.
And of course, replace the hardcoded number with a constant.
In the procedure, you will trap the exception using an exception handler. E.g. create or replace procedure P is
b boolean;
n number;
begin
.. do some stuff ..
b := F( n );
.. do some more stuff ..
exception
when <some_exception> then
.. code to handle the exception..
end;
Refer to the Oracle® Database PL/SQL User's Guide and Reference for details on how to create custom exceptions, raise exceptions, and trap exceptions.

Customer 9000AAAE : Exception 7 in function module VIEW_KUAG2
Hi,
Hi all,
When I do the intercompany billing for STO (vf01), I got the system message attached below. The customer 9000AAAE is a ship to party and assigned to the ordering plant. It has the partner function SH. So can anybody kindly tell me where is wrong in the custmer master data or somewhere else according to the following message? Or where to find the VIEW_KUAG2? What does it mean?
Customer 9000AAAE: Exception 7 in function module VIEW_KUAG2
Diagnosis
During the attempt to read customer master record 9000AAAE,
an error occured which is not handled separately.
System Response
The billing document for this business transaction was not
created.
Procedure
If the error occured during a background job, you should try
to create the billing document online. If the error occured
online, the billing document can be created online. In any
case, you should check the customer master record. If you
cannot find any error in the master data, contact SAP.

Regardin handling exception in a function, while using that function in sql
Hi gurus,
I have a question regarding logging exceptions while using functions.
I wrote a separate package to handle errors, where i have a procedure.
In this proc i'm logging my error into a table and then raise the error to the front end.
Ex:
proc_log_and_raise -- this proc... inserts my error into a table and then raisenow i included this error procedure in all functions and procedures.
consider an example with a sample procedure and function.
function func_1(( v_var varchar2) return varchar2 is
begin
select column2
from table2
where col1 = v_var;
exception
when others then
proc_log_and_raise;
end;
procedure proc_1( v_var varchar2) is
begin
select func_1(v_var) -- error occurs here..
from table_a
where col1 = v_var;
exception
when others then
proc_log_and_raise;
end; now i do
exec proc_1( v_var );but now my problem is, when an error occurs in func_1, i'm getting an error with DML operation ( as we are inserting into error table)
ORA-14551: cannot perform a DML operation inside a query.
so what i want to do is, log both function and procedure where error occured.
So is there any other better way, we can write our exception handling, so that i can log error and use function in a select statement.
thank you.I changed my procedure a little, to make it simple.

Function call in procedure within Package Body
I am a novice in PL/SQL so that I can't find out where the problem is. I am testing a function call in procedure within a Package Body.
But the PL/SQL Complier doesn't compile the package body but I don't know what I do wrong. Plz let me know how to call a function in procedure within a Package Body?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Hi,
Welcome to the forum!
You'll find that there are a lot of people willing to help you.
Are you willing to help them? Whenever you have a problem, post enough for people to re-create the problem themselves. That includes CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements for all the tables you use.
Error messages are very helpful. Post the complete error message you're getting, including line number. (It looks like your EXCEPTION sections aren't doing much, except hiding the real errors. That's a bad programming practice, but probably not causing your present problem - just a future one.)
Never post unformatted code. Indent the code to show the extent of each procedure, and the blocks within each one.
When posting formatted text on this site, type these 6 characters:
\(all small letters, inside curly brackets) before and after each section of formatted test, to preserve the spacing.
For example, the procedure find_test_called would be a lot easier to read like this:PROCEDURE find_test_called
IS
BEGIN
BEGIN
V_max := Manage_students.GET_LASTMT;
DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE ('MAX_NUMBER :' || V_max);
EXCEPTION
WHEN OTHERS
THEN
DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE ('Error in finding student_id: ');
RETURN NULL;
END;
COMMIT;
EXCEPTION
WHEN OTHERS
THEN
DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE ('Error in finding student_id: ');
END find_test_called;
It's much easier to tell from the code above that you're trying to return NULL from a procedure. Only functions can return anything (counting NULL); procedures can have RETURN statements, but that single word"RETURN;" is the entire statement. -
Member function and member procedure inside an object type in Oracle.
Hi All,
Please do have a look at these codes and help me understand. I have no idea about this member function and member procedure. How do they work? Please explain me about this.
Regards,
BS2012
create type foo_type as object (
foo number,
member procedure proc(p in number),
member function func(p in number) return number
create type body foo_type as
member procedure proc(p in number) is begin
foo := p*2;
end proc;
member function func(p in number) return number is begin
return foo/p;
end func;
end;
/Methods are just like functions or procedures in a package, except they're not in a package, their part of an object type.
The object has attributes (which are the variables declared in it).
To use such an object you would do things like this...
SQL> set serverout on
SQL>
SQL> declare
2 v_foo foo_type;
3 v_val number;
4 begin
5 v_foo := foo_type(20); -- instantiate the object and initialize the object attributes
6 v_foo.proc(20); -- call the object method (proc)
7 v_val := v_foo.func(4); -- call the object method (func)
8 dbms_output.put_line(v_val);
9 end;
10 /
10
PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.The Type definition you've declared creates the object class, but not actually an object itself.
To actually have an object you need to declare a variable of that object class type, and then instantiate it. When you instantiate the object you need to initialize all the attributes (generally you can pass null if required for each of them to initialize them).
Once you have your object instantiated, you can call the methods within that object as demonstrated above, a bit like calling functions and procedures in a package, except they are methods within the object type itself, and therefore called directly by referencing them from the variable.
The documentation goes into a lot more detail of objects if you look it up. -
Help Me, How to catch exception thrown from ejbStore
Hi,
I am working on application running on Iplanet Application Server 4.0. Problem is the application exception thrown from the ejbStore don't reach the calling servlet, calling servlet receive TransactionRollback exception which is system exception. But there is no sign of my application exception thrown from ejbStore. Can anybody tell me how I can get my ApplicationException thrown from ejbStore in my calling servlet.
I am calling entity beans set method in servlet and in entity bean ejbStore method I am throwing Application exception.
in entity bean
public void ejbStore() throws MyException
if(true) throw new MyException();
in servlet
try {
MyEntityHome home = .......
MyEntityRemote remote = home.findBy.....
remote.setMyValue(MyValue value); //Transaction required Container managed
}catch(MyException e) {
e.printStackTrace(); // Not cahcing My Exception
}catch(Exception e) {

SwingWorker and Exceptions in doInBackground() function
Hi. I have GUI and task which communicate with database. I have special class with prepared statements fields, data (returned from database) fields, get methods and construcor. Constructor assume one parameter, query data and fill data fields. So in constructor I perform (maybe) long running task. So I made this subclass SwingWorker in which I create instance of my database class. User type some input (serial number to which he wants to show info), confirm, there start the worker thread. However when he type bad input constructor of database class throws InvalidSnException and then I must show him JOptionPane with error message (or database error occurs). But I shouldn't do that from doInBacground() method because it isn't EventDispatcher thread.
public DbOperations doInBackground()
DbOperations db = null;
try {
db = new DbOperations(sn);
catch(InvalidSnException) {
catch(SQLException e) {
catch(Exception e) {
return db;
}I don't want to create some additional variables to hold error data, because exceptions hold worth information itself (for example SQLException). Do you know any idea how can solve this?So you mean that when I invoke JOptionPane method in chatch block in SwingUtilities.invokeLater() function, the code that shows JOptionPane will run on EDT?
When I catch InvalidSnException I just want to show error message and continue some loop to let user type input again, but when I catch SQLException I want show error message and exit with System.exit(-1). Should I use invokeAndWait() instead of invokeLater() ?
Thx -
RFC Destination Catch Exceptions
Hello,
I've a program with call to RFC destination 'XI' , i want to know if it is possible catch exceptions when in the other system (XI) a fault occurs, for example, the database table in which I want to insert the data is not created. Now, if this happens a dump occurs
thanks very much,Hello,
You can try this way with your RFC function module:
CALL FUNCTION 'RFC_WRITE_FILE'
DESTINATION FP_P_DEST
EXPORTING
FILE = L_V_NAME
FORMAT = L_C_BIN
SIZE = L_V_SIZE
LANGUAGE = SY-LANGU
IMPORTING
SIZE = L_V_SIZE
TABLES
FILEDATA = L_IT_FILE
EXCEPTIONS
SYSTEM_FAILURE = 1 MESSAGE L_V_RFC_MESS
COMMUNICATION_FAILURE = 2 MESSAGE L_V_RFC_MESS
ILLEGALNAME = 3
OTHERS = 6.
CASE SY-SUBRC.
WHEN 0.
WHEN 1.
WHEN 2.
WHEN 3.
WHEN 6.
ENDCASE.
The SY-SUBRC value can be captured this way. Hope this helps.

Define our own Exceptions in th function builder
hi
how to define our own Exceptions in th function builder in the Exception tab and how to use them in functon definiton.
regards
ravishHi,
<b>Exceptions</b>
The exception of a function module are defined on the Exceptions tab page in the Function Builder. Here you can select exception classes to define whether class-based exceptions are declared or non-class-based exception are defined. Class-based exceptions are represented in the above syntax by RAISING, and non-class-based exceptions are represented by EXCEPTIONS.
The addition RAISING is used to declare class-based exceptions that can be propagated from the function module to the caller. Exceptions in the categories CX_STATIC_CHECK and CX_DYNAMIC_CHECK must be explicitly declared, otherwise a propagation can lead to an interface violation. A violation of the interface leads to the treatable exception CX_SY_NO_HANDLER. Exceptions of the category CX_NO_CHECK are implicitly always declared. The declaration of exceptions of the category CX_STATIC_CHECK is statically checked in the syntax check. For exceptions of the category CX_DYNAMIC_CHECK, the check is not performed until runtime. In a function module in which class-based exceptions are declared with the RAISING addition, the statement CATCH SYSTEM-EXCEPTIONS cannot be used. Instead, the relevant treatable exceptions should be handled in a TRY control structure.
The addition EXCEPTIONS is used to define a list of non-class-based exceptions that can be triggered in the function module using the statements RAISE or MESSAGE RAISING. Exceptions defined in this way - as with formal parameters - are bound to the function module and cannot be propagated. If an exception of this type is triggered in a function module, and no return value has been assigned to it with the homonymous addition EXCEPTIONS of the CALL FUNCTION statement when the call was made, this leads to a runtime error.
<b>Note</b>
For new developments after release 6.10, SAP recommends that you work with class-based exceptions that are independent of the function module.

Padmam.<b></b> -
Why there's error stating "unreported exception" when call function
public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent evt)
Object obj = evt.getSource();
if (obj == DeleteButton)
readfile(); // Error here
deletefile();
rename();
========================================================================
public void readfile() throws Exception
BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new FileReader("WhiteCollar2.txt"));
line=in.readLine();
found=0;
while (line!=null)
if ((line.substring(0,6)).equals((String)textfield.getText()))
System.out.println("CORRECT\n");
found=1;
else
writefile();
line=in.readLine();
========================================================================
How come when I call the above readfile(), it gives me :
DeleteScreen.java:70: unreported exception java.lang.Exception; must be caught or declared to be thrown
readfile();
However if I change to the following :
try{readfile()};
catch (Exception e) {}
The code works fine. I am still figuring out on throwing exceptions etc. But how come I already throw exceptions it still complains exception not declared?
Thanks and Rgdsbut the writefile() function which I called in the
read() also throw exception but how come I do not need
to catch it for the write()?The error message says it all: must be caught or declared to be thrown. Thus, you must either catch the exception using try-catch or you must declare that your method throws the exception using the throws declaration.
Your call to writefile() is in the method readfile() that already declares that it throws Exception. So there is no problem there.
BTW, you should know that it is generally ill-advised to catch or declare exception using the superclass Exception. You should use as specific an exception class as possible. In this case I suppose it would be IOException. -
How do we trap exception inside the function module?
How do we trap exception inside the function module?
Use ABAP Help - CATCH, RAISE for starters. Or take a look at an existing function module, for example.

How to catch exception into a String variable ?
I have a code
catch(Exception e)
e.printStackTrace();
logger.error("\n Exception in method Process"+e.getMessage());
}when i open log i find
Exception in method Process null.
But i get a long error message in the server console !! I think thats coming from e.printStackTrace().
can i get the error message from e.printStackTrace() into a String variable ?
I want the first line of that big stacktrace in a String variable.
How ?A trick is to issue e.printStackTrace() against a memory-based output object.

How to catch exception while validating the username and password in hbm
Hi,
I do want to set the username and password dynamically in hibernate.cfg.xml
Here below is my configuration file.
{code<hibernate-configuration>
<session-factory>
<property name="hibernate.bytecode.use_reflection_optimizer">false</property>
<property name="hibernate.connection.driver_class">oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver</property>
<property name="hibernate.connection.pool_size">10</property>
<property name="show_sql">true</property>
<property name="hibernate.dialect">org.hibernate.dialect.OracleDialect</property>
<property name="hibernate.hbm2ddl.auto">update</property>
<property name="current_session_context_class">thread</property>
<property name="show_sql">true</property>
</session-factory>
</hibernate-configuration>{code}
Also im getting that session factory object like the below code.
public class Sessions { private static SessionFactory sessionFactory; private static Configuration configuration = new Configuration(); static { try { String userName = GuigenserviceImpl.userName; String password = GuigenserviceImpl.password; String hostName = GuigenserviceImpl.hostName; String portNo = GuigenserviceImpl.portNo; String sId = GuigenserviceImpl.sId; configuration .setProperty("hibernate.connection.username", userName); configuration .setProperty("hibernate.connection.password", password); configuration.setProperty("hibernate.connection.url", "jdbc:oracle:thin:@" + hostName + ":" + portNo + ":" + sId); try { configuration.configure("/hibernate.cfg.xml"); sessionFactory = configuration.buildSessionFactory(); GuigenserviceImpl.strAccpted = "true"; } catch (Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); GuigenserviceImpl.strAccpted = "false"; } } catch (HibernateException hibernateException) { GuigenserviceImpl.strAccpted = "false"; hibernateException.printStackTrace(); } catch (Throwable ex) { GuigenserviceImpl.strAccpted = "false"; ex.printStackTrace(); throw new ExceptionInInitializerError(ex); } } public static SessionFactory getSessionFactory() { return sessionFactory; }
So, in this above scenario, suppose if im giving the wrong password means exception should be caught and the string variable "GuigenserviceImpl.strAccpted" should be assigned to false.
But im getting the SQL Exception only in console like wrong username and password. And finally i couldn't able to catch the exception in Sessions class, static block.
Anyone can help me in catching that SQL Exception in my Sessions class and i need to handle that SQL Exception in my class.
Im getting this following exception message in my console.

Kothandaraman N.Hi,
Myself hardcoded that username and password checking like the below code.
String name = loginData.get("userName").toString();
String pswd = loginData.get("pswd").toString();
String hstName = loginData.get("hName").toString();
String prtNo = loginData.get("portNo").toString();
String sid = loginData.get("sId").toString();
SessionFactory sessionFactory = null;
try {
if (name.trim().equals(userName) && pswd.trim().equals(password)
&& hstName.trim().equals(hostName)
&& prtNo.trim().equals(portNo) && sid.trim().equals(sId)) {
sessionFactory = Sessions.getSessionFactory();
strAccpted = "true";
} else {
strAccpted = "false";
} catch (Exception e) {
e.printStackTrace();
strAccpted = "false";
}I have my own values in string objects, then comparing that values with the values from login form. If both values are matching, then i will do configurations in hibernate.
ResourceBundle resourceBundle = ResourceBundle
.getBundle("com.beyon.ezygui.server.Queries");
public static final String connection_url = resourceBundle
.getString("connection.url");
public static final String userName = resourceBundle.getString("userName");
public static final String password = resourceBundle.getString("password");
public static final String hostName = resourceBundle.getString("hostName");
public static final String portNo = resourceBundle.getString("portNo");
public static final String sId = resourceBundle.getString("sId");The above are the String objects i'm checking for the match with values from login form.

System.out.println("Hello...");
} catch(Exception e) {
_adapter = null;
System.out.println("Unable to start adapter: " + e.getMessage());
_adapter.start() will call onMessage() my onMessage like this
public void onMessage(Adapter adpt, Message message) {
try {
if(message instanceof TextMessage) {
// Write the text out as read String text = ((TextMessage)message).getText();
// Do CHECK Process adpt.demoOut("Receive CHECK Text is :" + text);
//System.out.println("class name is " + consumerName);
} else {
// This is just a message (no particular type) } } catch (Exception e) {
try {
adpt.warn("Error outputing data: " + message.getJMSMessageID());
} catch(Exception ignore) {
} adpt.warn("\tError: " + e.getMessage());
// Do some exception process }
If the JMS Server shutdown, how can I catch the exception?You might want to try with exception listener that JMS specification provides.
