CC 10.1 Error with InDesign CS6 When Opening a File

I have Adobe CS6 and came across an issue when a fellow employee sent me a file. When attempting to open an .indd file in InDesign, a dialog box popped up stating "Cannot open because it was saved with a newer version of Adobe InDesign CS (8.1)" After noticing that I needed to update my CS version, I installed the updates and found that it now states "Cannot open because it was saved with a newer version of Adobe InDesign CS (10.1)" What does this mean? I've checked and I have InDesign version 8.0.2. and I don't have any more updates to install. Can anyone explain to me why this error is occurring and how to resolve this? I've received an .idml version of the file I'd like to open and that seems to work, however I'd like to resolve this issue so as to prevent this again. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Adobe Indesign CS (10.1) is the latest version of Indesign which is the 2014.1 release. As you saw exporting the 2014.1 file to .idml allows you to open it with CS6.

Error message from web - when opening pdf files

Hi,
I receive the following error message a lot when I try to open an educational pdf file from the web. What do I need to do to 1. see, 2. print and 3. save these type of educational pdf files from the web? I am using a MacBookPro OS X.

Yes i tried following your list of commands and got the same error from MyMathLab by Pearson Publishing or the other link. I'm beginning to wonder if they are protected.
As you probably guess - I am not computer savvy. I will take my laptop to school tomorrow and ask another student.

InDesign crash when opening PageMaker file

InDesign CS3 on Windows XP or Windows Vista - two different computers, opening PageMaker 7 files.
I opened 5 files, converted them to .indd files without any problem. The 6th crashed the programme, and now I cannot open any files without Windows telling me there is a problem and closing InDesign. No problem description. XP says there was an 'unknown error' and Vista says Windows encountered a problem and looks for a solution but never finds one!
Any help would be very much appreciated!!

AFAIK, that was a CS2 issue only. I'm running CS3 on Vista Ultimate 64
and have no problem opening the few PM files I have on this machine.
I don't have CS2 installed on Vista to check but I remember this being
verified as an issue that wouldn't be fixed in CS2.

InDesign CS6 wont open a file

I have InDesign CS6 and i am trying to open an Indesign file that someone sent me and whenever i try to open it i get a prompt that says:
"Cannot open the file. Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supposrts the file format may be missing or the file may be open in another application."
The file is not open anywhere else on my computer, and the file is an .EPS file.
How do i get it to open?

Its a file for my company that is going to be used as a cover sheet for different types of files but the information will be changed depending on what is going to be in the different files. For example if the files are for interviewing then the front of this cover sheet will need to say "Interviewing". Currently it says "Quality".
I do not have illustrator or i would just change the text in Illustrator.

Login error with report viewer when opening Crystal report with subreport

I have a problem with a login error (database vendor code 18456) when I try to open a crystal report to view it.
The report uses data from an external payroll database but I'm running it via our Accounts system (it's a convenient front end for users to run the report from). This works fine for another report that doesn't have any subreports. However when I run the Crystal report that has subreports, the report generation process works but when the crystal reports viewer tries to open the report I get the login error. It doesn't seem to be passing the login details for the payroll database down to the subreport.
I'm using Crystal Reports version 11.0.0.1282. The Accounts system is Technology One. Tech One have provided a report template that has several formulas designed to allow Tech One to play nicely with Crystal. One of these formulas allows me to enter the nickname of the external database that the report needs to use. The external database's connection details are fully specified in the Tech One configuration section (server console). So in this case the report says use database U1 & the server console identifies U1 as being the payroll database, specifies the connection path & has the username & password required to logon to the payroll database/server.
The report is running ok & retrieving data, but for some reason the viewer is erroring. If anyone has any ideas for how I can get the login details used to run the main report to flow through to the subreport it would be much appreciated.

I understand your frustration. We can do a few things. But really, it should be Technology One contacting us. To use an analogy (which you are free to share with Technology One). They built a car and sealed the hood. You bought the car, but he engine does not quite run as it should. You bring the car to the mechanic and all he can do is look at the car as he can not even open the hood.
In any case, here is what I would do if I could open the hood (e.g.; if I was dealing with Technology One):
1) Look up database vendor code 18456. This is simply the error our print engine is receiving from the database client and it simply passes it through relatively unhandled. This you should be able to do your self or ask Technology One to tell you what that means.
2) Break out the subreport and see if it runs on it's own in the application (if this is a permissions issue - which I doubt - it should come up here too). Unfortunately, this is for Technology One to do...
3) Run the report (with the subreport) in the CR designer. Does it work there? If this is a win app and it works, we again eliminated permission issues. And we also confirmed that the report is good. Again, Technology One should do this for you.
BTW.; CR 11.0 is out of support - not sure if you or Technology One are aware of this...
4) Can the developer duplicate the issue on his development computer?
Now, there are couple of instances where you say something like; "the report works and gets data, but the viewer errors out":

How do you know the report is retrieving data? From the error I would say the report never connects, thus the error / request for a logon...
So, the short of all of this is; get Technology One to contact us. They can do it over the forums or obtain a phone case here;

Now, here is a warning. As CR 11.0 is out of support Technology One will have to upgrade to CR 11.5, before that can create a phone case, which for them and you brings up another bunch of issues...
If you do not get any joy from the support person at you are talking to at Technology One, get him to escalate the issue. They are the ones that should be talking to us...

InDesign CS6: Cannot open the file ...

Hi there,
I think I just blew my file by embedding every picture inside the file. It's a ~130 page long user guide with A LOT of pictures.
I saved it successfully a few days ago, and now tried to open it again to finish working with it. But then I get this error:
I'm a relatively new user to InDesign and didn't think much about it embedding all the stuff.
The file size grew to 11.5 GB. Which is a lot, but I was still able to work quite smoothely while it was open, so I thought everythings fine. System is Windows 7.
I've already searched the forums and didn't find any solutions on getting the file working again. Afaik it's the only file I have to use, no backups done. Biggest. Mistake. Ever. I know...

Crashes with Snow Leopard when opening TIFF files.

There seems to be a general problem with opening certain TIFF files in 10.6.1. Preview, Quicklook, even Get Info in the Finder cause app crashes (and Finder restarts). It seems to affect almost all apps (but not, interestingly, Photoshop CS3). It only happens with certain TIFF files, but totally consistently. It happens whether or not 3rd party apps are running. To reproduce, open such a file in Preview, or use Quicklook, or Get Info in the Finder.

I have a RIP on a PC creating 1-bit TIFF files. They open just fine in Photoshop or other 3rd party programs. However when I try and open them in preview they immediately crash the program. Now I have also noticed that when I select the item and try to get info (to change the default program to open with) the FINDER crashes too!
Getting info on a file can actually crash the Finder? C'mon Apple gimme a break here... a 1-bit TIFF should be no problem.

Corrupt photoshop CS6 when opening any file

Hello, I have a strange problem. My CS6 photoshop is viewing any file I open as corrupt (please see examples below) but when I save them, they are ok in windows preview / bridge etc.. its only showing really weird in photoshop! I dont know what has all of a sudden changed! I havent changed any settings!
Does anyone know why photoshop is being weird? I am on a windows 7, 64 bit PC and this problem is not just limited to my PC, my colleagues also today have this same issue on their PCs too!

It's just you mentioned your collegues were having the same issue. I thought you mean't on that document, obviuosly you mean on there documents too.
So if its not the documents, it must be photoshop . Hence i asked about virus and being networked, the other option would be all have downloaded a bad upgrade perhaps.
what happens if you change the colour profile? Does it correct itself?

Override document preferences when opening a file

Hi all
Does anyone know if there is a way to override the document preferences with the InDesign preferences when opening a file (or even when a file is open).
The issue i have is that I have a whole load of documents where for some reason the superscript has been set to size 100% and not the standard 58.3% and i want to revert it back to standard without the need to open preferences -> advanced type and then resetting all the sizes.
I know that Quark (sorry to swear) had this ability where on file open it would warn of a preference mismatch and ask if document or Quark prefs should be used.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated as it will save me a lot of time.

The issue is that although InDesign will open up Quark documents, it doesn't appear to allow you to add them to a book.
Therefore, from what i can best make out, i would need to import the Quark doc into InDesign, save the file as an InDesign file, then import it into a book to run the script. We have few hundred single page Quark docs for a packaging job we are doing.
It seems quicker to open the file, and just change the superscript preference, its not an insurmountable issue, just more of an inconvenience and a bit of a waste of time.

My Fonts change when opening an InDesign CS4 file with InDesign CS6

I've been experiencing strange behaviour when opening a InDesign CS4 file file with InDesign CS6: the kerning and spacing is all off:

Is this a conversion error? Is there a setting/pref I've got wrong?

It's more than a year ago since this issue was reported, but at this time I'd had the same problem when opening a CS4 document in CS6/CC.
I was amazed that a header, placed in capitals, looked different in CS6/CC. But at last, after several tests, i've came to the conclusion that "forced" capitals behaving different than "real" capitals. In others words: when you forcing text to capitals the kerning would be different in CS6/CC. When you place text in real capitals (Shift + text) the kerning is the same as in both InDesign versions.

As you can see: in CS4 there's no difference between real capitals en forced capitals.

Today I have installed new version of CreativeSuite-Master collection. All programs are working, I have problems just with InDesign. When I tried to open it, there is a window, where it tells me, that the program isn't working any more. The details about problems are:

Having major issues with InDesign CS6

Having major issues with InDesign CS6. Not only is it crashing, but it is corrupting the existing file. Then when I relaunch, it is not allowing me to open the file again.
In another instance, yesterday I opened an file created 3 months ago and it allowed me to make changes, however I could not save them to the existing file, or not even to a new name.
I had to copy each layer on each page to create a new document. NOT GOOD!!!

Crash with Indesign CS6 and Keyboard Maestro

Anyone else experiencing crashes when using Keyboard Maestro with Indesign CS6 on OSX Mavericks? (Latest update of all mentioned apps).
Indesign crashes when I try to copy certain items in Indesign, but it is not possible to narrow down which. Happends even when there are no macros installed in KBM. Therefore it seems like its the Keyboard Maestro Engine that causes the crashes.

I see then I believe Kglad's advice is on track with starting with updating your printer drivers. I have also moved this discussion over to the InDesign forum as the Users in this forum likely have additional suggestions.
Also if you can please turn off your e-mail signature if you want to respond via e-mail. Your responses are going to a public forum where the information is accessible by anyone. I have edited your previous response to remove the signature.

Yes, I would certainly get the latest update. That we often solve issues like these, for this is not normal. Some further tips would be quite InDesign, then to trash your InDesign preferences and then re-start InDesign (it will rebuild them again). Some further areas to look into would be:
* Corrupt Font(s) (or corrupt font caches - see below)
* Corrupt Image(s)
* Power Failures (power surges)
* Placing images via drag-and-drop from an Internet page
* Working on an InDesign file over a network or on a remote server
