CD-labeling/Appleworks?

Hi all
I would like some info, on printing CD-DVD lables. Can this be done in appleworks? Or is a 3rd party software needed? I have seen lableing kits for PC/windows, but not for mac.
Also, I would like to get a book or two on macs, that covers networking, appleworks and other applications. Does anyone know what's available, and where to get them? I can find a book on ebay on jaguar, but am running panther now and would like one that covers it.
Any help appreciated as I want to learn more about how to use this system, as I am a novice at using them!
Thanks Bill J

Bill,
This may be one of the posts that I answered but the uplink did not load. Page loading is slow today as well.
You asked about hub and switch information. Here is a site with a glossary but it might be bad taste to make reference to a Microsoft website. : )
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/getstarted/glossary.mspx
This one gives a different look at the devices and is from a more paletable source!
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/networking/bridge_types.htm
Note the last line:
Routers are also the only one of these four devices that will allow you to share a single IP address among multiple network clients.
With out a router, your ISP will see every computer in the LAN and you get billed for several connections instead of sharing bandwidth through a router that the ISP sees as only only device, thus only one bill.
If you start here:
http://compnetworking.about.com/b/a/136738.htm
They provide a link for router, switch and hub definitions.

PS one more source and definition:
http://compnetworking.about.com/od/hardwarenetworkgear/g/bldef_switch.htm
“switch (network switch)” Glossary
"Definition: A network switch is a small hardware device that joins multiple computers together within one local area network (LAN). Technically, network switches operate at layer two (Data Link Layer) of the OSI model.
Network switches appear nearly identical to network hubs, but a switch generally contains more "intelligence" (and a slightly higher price tag) than a hub. Unlike hubs, network switches are capable of inspecting data packets as they are received, determining the source and destination device of that packet, and forwarding it appropriately. By delivering each message only to the connected device it was intended for, a network switch conserves network bandwidth and offers generally better performance than a hub.
As with hubs, Ethernet implementations of network switches are the most common. Mainstream Ethernet network switches support either 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps, or 10/100 Mbps Ethernet standards.
Different models of network switches support differing numbers of connected devices. Most consumer-grade network switches provide either four or eight connections for Ethernet devices. Switches can be connected to each other. Such "daisy chaining" allows progressively larger number of devices to join the same LAN."

  • Appleworks 6 won't open

Thanks for your help. AW6.2.9 keeps crashing when I try to open it. The message written in the console log is " launch failed because the application path is invalid or non existent. Could you help me please.

You can try trashing the appleworks plist file. It's located in youruserhome/Library/Preferences and is labeled com.apple.appleworks.plist (or something close to that anyway)
Drag this file to the trash and empty the trash and try to launch the app again. If that's no help, you can also try trashing the folder labeled AppleWorks, also located in youruserhome/Library/Preferences.
If that doesn't help, I'd guess the app may be corrupted, and a re-install of AppleWorks may be in order.

  • Cannot create additional Radio Button items

Hi. I am new to Appleworks database, so this my be a stupid question. When I try to add a field and define it as a radio button group, then try to customize the buttons via Options, it normally only shows 2 buttons "Item 1" and "Item 2". I can modify these 2 buttons, but cannot create any other buttons or delete either of these buttons. The "Create" button is greyed out when in Options. I tried re-installing Appleworks with no change.

    Adding to the previous comments:
You can't delete either of the two items because two is the minimum number of items for a radio button field. The purpose of radio buttons is to allow a choice between (or among) items.
When you click on either item in the list (and make no change to its label) AppleWorks offers you only the choice to modify it because it won't allow two items with the same label. When you change the label, AppleWorks offers the choice of Modifying the existing button or Creating a new button with the label/item name you've typed into the box.
Once you've created an additional button it's possible to delete a button without leaving fewer than the minimum two buttons in the field, so AW then adds Delete to the available choices.

  • How to install on new (late 2010) Mac Pro

I am going to use Migration Assistant to transfer my data from my old G5 to my new Mac Pro, but would appreciate advice on how to install AW on the new Mac. I have my original Appleworks 6 DVD with the notation in small print: Version 6.2.9 (circa 2003). I then also have a CD that I burned and labeled "Appleworks 6.2.9 Updater". I vaguely remember doing this, but can not recall what it was for. Please advice. Thanks!

OK, got it by installing from the disk and the computer sending me to Rosetta. Much simpler than I expected. Appleworks rocks .

  • How can I can I change an Appleworks business card to match an Avery Label?

I used the earliest Apple II's, and I loved Appleworks, being a member of the Appleworks Users Club through the days of Appleworks 6, which I still use on my Macbook with OS 10.6.8.  I enjoy the ease of creating business cards that it allows.  I have forgotten how to change the format to different Avery labels.
    Help

If you updated your existing account then try logging out of it on the iPad by tapping on the id in Settings > Store and then log back in and see if that 'refreshes' the account on the iPad. If you created a new account then any content that you purchased/downloaded via the old account will remain tied to that old account, and only that old account can download updates to its apps.

  • Labels created in appleworks need to be converted for printing shop

I have about 100 labels to send to a printer but I am told that a graphic artist must redo these as they cannot be converted as quality would be mediocre if saved from Appleworks to pdf or Jpeg.  Does anyone know how the quality of each label can be good without going through the whole proces and cost of having each label redone?
    Thanks for your help.

From the print dialog choose 'PDF' then 'Save as PDF' and see whether the resultant quality is good enough - its probably as good as you will ever get but a professional print shop may still turn their noses up at it.

  • When using Appleworks database for printing labels can I have columns of different widths?

When using Appleworks database for printing labels can I have a column of different width?
Case in point, the supplied avery labels in Appleworks does not have 8195. When I build one using custom design  I need a small column between column 2 and 3 to line up the info in columns 3 and 4. All the labels are 1.3/4 inch wide but I need to insert a column 1/4 wide to match up with the avery page....
    Any ideas???
    Thanks......
    ---warren

Well, the issue is that when you creat a custom width of 1.3/4 from the edge of the first label to the edge of label 2 all is good. The right and left margins were also set correct in AW. The Avery page, for some reason, has a small 1/4 inch column between the columns of label 2 and 3 therefore making the distance between the left edge of the label in column 2 and the right edge of the label in column 3 - a width of 2 inches and not 1.3/4.
I guess Avery wanted the page to look even.
    I did this work around.....
I created a custom lay out of 2 columns (not 4) with the correct width of 1.3/4 from label edge to label edge and the correct left side margin. After printing the first page I just turned the sheet 180 degress and printed the 2nd page to use all the labels on the Avery sheet. Since the upper and lower margin were the same it worked great....
"Great minds think alike"...   thanks for your suggetion

  • Appleworks 6 labels (won't recognize the 3 columns)

    Hello,
I'm hoping one of you smart folks on this site can help me with a mailing label problem in AppleWorks. I'm using 6.2.9 and have set up a database for a 3 column label page. The information from my database has all been entered. I've also gone through the "New Label Layout" setup and set the number of columns on my label page to 3.
Once I finish the layout setup though, it generates only one column. Otherwise, all the label info is appearing correctly. Anyone know why my 3-column setting isn't being recognized? Thanks so much!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
If you turn on Page View in the View menu, you will see the three columns on the screen.

  • Appleworks SS pie chart labeling

I cannot override the "Series 1-7" labels that serve as the default legend in my pie chart. The data wedges in color (with their percents) are fine, the title of the chart is fine. I just want to put four cells of names (column A) in place of the "Series" messages.

    Hi 'rider,
Welcome to Apple Discussions and the AppleWorks forum.
Select the cells containing the names (in Col. A) and the cells containing the data (in col. B). Press command-M to Make chart.
Select Pie Chart, then Click the General button.
In the General pane, click the radio button for Series in: Rows, and check the box for Use numbers as labels in First column.
    Click OK.

  • Labels in word merged from appleworks

I can not do a fucntion that I have done many times before. After opening Data scource I get a screen for data convert. I use to get a set up screen. Then set up label and merged. Any help out there?

As far as I know we where never allowed to merge datas from Word in AppleWorks.
First thing to do is to import your Word datas in an AppleWorks database.

  • Opening appleworks label file in new imac,

My christmas card labels were created in appleworks labels, now there is no way to open the cwk label file in my new imac. I don't have access to my appleworks in my old computer, can someone help!!!

    Hi hcz,
Welcome to Apple Discussions and the Appleworks forum.
Your labels will be in an AppleWorks 6 database file, a file format that can be opened only by AppleWorks 6. There are a couple of routes open to you:
    1.
Get a new AppleWorks 6 installation disk and install the application from that.
Cautions: The installer on the disk must be the OS X version. Early versions of AppleWorks 6 contained both the Classic and OS X versions of AppleWorks, but the installer ran only in OS 9 and earlier. Hardcore Mac had installation disks for AppleWorks 6.2.4, with a Mac OS X installer application when I last checked.
    2.
Find someone who has AppleWorks 6 installed, and get the labels printed (to labels or to a pdf file, from which you can print) and/or get the file converted to a format which you can open with your current spreadsheet program. Suggested formats would be tab delimited text (.txt) or MS Excel (.xls). The text file can be opened into any text editor, then copied and pasted into pretty much any spreadsheet. Most spreadsheets will also open an Excel formatted file.
If you wish, you may send the file to me. I'll return a pdf, a text file and an excel formatted file, and trash the original. If you choose to do this, you'll find my address by clicking my name (in blue0 to the left of this message. Please place "AppleWorks Labels" in the subject line of your message.

  • Can I transfer appleworks databases to some other app in order to print mailing labels?

Can I transfer appleworks databases to Bento or elsewhere on my new MacBook Pro in order to print mailing labels, or do I have to re-enter all the information?

Word Processing documents can be opened directly in Pages 4 (AppleWorks 6 only) but this is no longer available - the newPages 5 (Mavericks required) does not open AppleWorks documents. Panergy Software's docXConverter v3.2 ($19.95) can convert Appleworks 5 and 6 Word Processing documents to RTF (though it has been reported that it can only handle documents which contain only text, not those which include images or frames). The latest version of the free LibreOffice has announced that it can open AppleWorks 6 Word Processing documents: it does appear to be able to handle at least some embedded images.
Draw Documents can be opened directly only in EazyDraw (the more expensive version from their website, not the cheaper one from the Mac App Store, and you will need v4.0 'Retro' not the most recent version) or Intaglio (though this appears not to be able to handle very complex drawings).
Spreadsheets can be opened directly only in the older versions of  Numbers - the new version for Mavericks will not do this. The old version is no longer available.
Presentations can be opened directly only in the older versions Keynote again the new version for Mavericks will not do this. The old version is no longer available.
To use other programs, or open Painting or Database documents at all, you must export from AppleWorks first. Nothing will open AW database documents.
If you have upgraded to Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks and have AppleWorks documents you cannot open, then you should be able to install Snow Leopard on an external hard disk and start from that (provided that the Mac did not come with anything higher than Snow Leopard originally installed); and success has been reported in running Snow Leopard under emulation in Parallels - the method is described here: it seems complex; however Snow Leopard Server may still be available in the Apple Store (by telephone) at a reduced price and this makes the process a lot easier. I haven't tried either method: use at your own discretion. You can then run AppleWorks as an emergency measure.

    Dorothy: I feel your pain!
Here is a post I just assembled for another Appleworks user:
First, read these excellent articles on Appleworks migration:
Appleworks for the modern day, a migration tip by a brody; and
    Abandoning Appleworks by Roger Wilmut.
If you need to run Appleworks 6 to export some data (for example a database, which cannot be opened by any other program):
    a)  If your Mac will still boot into Snow Leopard, partition your hard drive (or add an external hard drive) and install Snow Leopard (and the optional Rosetta) into it and use the "dual-boot" method to boot into Snow Leopard and run Appleworks 6; or
    b)  Install Snow Leopard Server into Parallels and run Appleworks 6 concurrently with Lion, Mt. Lion and Mavericks:

  • Does making labels on Appleworks 6 require a science degree? It does

I have not been able to make address labels without some kind of defects.
Unlike Word, there is no way to get an image of the label but on Print Preview, by now, it is too late to change the layout of the label unless you build another database from which you cannot see a visual layout until previewing the printing of the label(s).
A vicious cycle that has me really, really angry at Apple.
There is no upgrade to Appleworks 6, nothing that replaces that buggy program, what was Apple thinking?

"What I do is, I go to Layout->Layout then Format-> Alignment-> Center but...
when I go back to Layout -> Browse the physical image of the label is still aligned on the left."
Alignment > Center is a Text formating command which aligns lines of text between set margins.
In your DB, go Layout > Layout, then Select the frames holding the text you want to align (the frames for each field on your label) by clicking on the first one, then shift-clicking on each of the others in turn. (If your label contains only the field frames—no other text or graphics, you can select all of the frames more quickly by clicking the Selection tool (arrow) in the Tools palette, then pressing command-A to Select All.) When selected, each field will show square black handles at each corner.
With the fields selected, go Format > Align > Center (or press command-\) to set the alignment.
Go Layout > Browse to return to Browse mode. You should now find the text for each line of the label centered horizontally in the space occupied by the field on the label. If you have specified a label set with more than one label across the page, and see only a single column on the left side, go Window > Page View to rearrange the label contents as they will appear on the printed page.
(See also the two notes below.)
    Regards,
    Barry
Note 1: When selecting objects (in this case field frames), take care that you do not move either the objects or the Body boundary of the layout. If you do accidently move one of these, immediately (ie. before taking any other action) press what a friend of mine calls the "Oops Key"— command-Z — to undo the move. Undo can be used only to reverse your most recent action.
Note 2: If the labels you are creating are to be used for mailing, I would suggest not centering each line. Leave the lines aligned to the left margin, and if you want some white space at that side, select and move all of the fields to the right, using the arrow keys to nudge them over. Note that this may result in longer lines of text being truncated at the right edge of the label.

  • Address labels in AppleWorks 6

I have created custom address labels with apparent success but when I click on 'create' everything disappears. I've done this three times. It's stored somewhere, but where? How do I retrieve it for printing?

Check the Layout menu. Your labels layouts should be in the group of items in the bottom section of that menu.
