CD not readable but DVD works

My early 2010 MBP has started shwoing the following error when I insert a CD:
"The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer."
DVDs play with no problem at all and also, if I chose the ignore the ignore option to the CD error above, I can use the old Songbird app to rip music from CDs in to FLAC format - again with no problem. I ran a CD cleaner through the drive but no difference.
I have also tried starting the macbook with 'D' pressed to get the hardware diagnostics but this just gives me a white screen for a while before booting up normally.
Running Mavericks, Verified, disk and repaired permissions.

I've already used a cleaning CD to no effect.
It still reads CDs using songbird, however I can no longer import them into itunes. I've tried redownloading itunes as well.
I have since dug out the CDROMs/DVDs that came with it(which play ok) and did a 'D' restart to do a diagnostics test and it didn't find any errors at all.

H.264 not readable in DVD Studio Pro

I'm using compressor for a massive DVD Yearbook. The setting I am using is the H.264 For DVD Studio Pro. However, when importing the converted videos into DVD STudio Pro, the software gives an error saying, "This format is not readable by DVD SP." What gives? If it says H.264 for DVD Studio Pro, why will the program not read a file created specifically for it?

The only format that DVDs read is mpeg 2. H.264 is a great compression, but not DVD compatible.
You can take the original full quality .mov and compress to mpeg2 from that. It'll give you better quailty than compressing an already-compressed file. "Export using compressor" option in FCP is the best choice -- then choose DVD presets when compressor opens.

Try reset all settings.
Settings > General > Reset > Reset all settings. It won't delete any data.

DVDs not readable, but data CDs are

All of a sudden my iBook stopped reading media DVDs. After I insert a disc, an error message appears, saying "Disc Insertion/ The disc you inserted was not readable by this computer." The DVDs will play in a normal DVD player. Data CDs will still play on my iBook, however. Is there anything I can do by myself or do I need to take it in to an Apple Store?

I have an identical problem on both my iBookG4 and my iMacG5. the G4 has only a combo drive; the G5 has a superdrive. If I weren't so frustrated I would laugh when the G5 tells me a DVD I just burned with iDVD "is not readable by this computer." (it's actually not readable by either but is still readable by my good old Sony Windows and my Samsung dvd/vcr combo....:-)
I have seen (in other posts) discussions about the necessity of Helvetica.dfont (note the d) and I can't find it in my iBook. Do you have this font in your machine? (if not, any idea how we can find it without a complete re-install? I mean, we left Windows to avoid these problems didn't we?)

IMac G5 won't read any CDs but DVDs work fine

I have an iMac G5 with a PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K04L drive
and firmware revision D441.
Just recently it stopped accepting any CDs (commercial CDs, software CDs, blank CD-Rs). It buzzes and grinds and groans and then spits them back out, but refuses to mount them. The only exception is the Apple OX Installation CD that came with the machine - that one works without a hitch. DVDs play fine and I can burn to blank DVDs. The problem is only with CDs.
I've tried suggestions from the forums:
- reset PRAM and NVRAM
- trashed com.apple.kernecaches, Extensions.kextcache, and CD Info.cidb and then rebooted
- fixed permissions
- verified disks
Not sure what else to do - but I would appreciate any suggestions - since it reads the Apple installation CD, does this mean it's not a hardware problem but a software problem?

to your local Apple Authorized Service Provider and
have them take a look at it. Hopefully your iMac is
still under warranty or AppleCare.

Is it possible to install a replacement unit on my own - or is this definitely not a do-it-yourself type fix? Also are there more reliable internal dual layer DVD/CD burners than the one the iMac G5 came with?
If I decide to simply plug in an external burner, are the external burners compatible with iLife 06 (iDVD and iTunes)?

AppLocker service issue: AppIDSvc not running, but enforcement working.

I have a strange problem with AppLocker. I configured the service (AppIDSvc) and some policies using group policy and deployed it to some computers in my domain. I logged onto one of the systems and verified that AppIDSvc was running, and that
enforcement and logging were working correctly.
Later, I decided to expand that policy to more computers. I reorganized the policies somewhat, but the RSOP is the same. I logged onto one of the new machines that I applied the policy to, and noticed that the service was not running and nothing
audited in the AppLocker logs. When I try to start the service, I get "System error 31 has occurred. A device attached to the system is not functioning."
This is strange, but what is more strange is that on the first set of systems I deployed AppLocker to, I am seeing the same behavior from the service: not starting, and attempts to start result in the same error. However, AppLocker is still working!
It is still enforcing the original policies I created, and is still logging events.
I did a little more investigation, and I see that the AppID service (which AppIDSvc depends on) is running, and must be the service doing the heavy lifting behind the scenes. When I prevent the AppID service from starting (by removing it from [HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services]),
and restart the system; the enforcement/logging stops. When I put it back, it restarts. But, I cannot get it to start on systems other than the original test group, and obviously something is wrong that the AppIDSvc won't start.
It's as if the enforcement mechanism (provided by AppId.sys?) cannot be called by the AppIDSvc, or AppIDSvc cannot access the resources in use by AppID; or something to that effect. I have tried auditing the behavior of the system using procmon, but
haven't made much headway yet.
Any insight into this issue, or how to better troubleshoot it would be greatly appreciated.

Despite hours of troubleshooting, just minutes after resorting to posting about this problem I solved it!
The issue ended up being that when I updated my group policy to ensure that the AppIDSvc was enabled, in my due diligence to ensure that everything was set correctly, I selected the radio button for "Log on as: Local System account." In fact, this
service must run under the "NT Authority\Local Service" account, not the Local System account. Once the account settings were corrected, the service started no problem.
I have updated my group policy to fix the issue and all seems to be well.

Deskjet 3054 not printing but scanner works

I have a Deskjet 3054 per label on the printer, however, but the IP address says it's Deskjet 3050 All-in-One J610a. My computer is Mac 10.9.5. I've read through other posts and have updated all my software via Apple's Software Update.
The symptoms are as below:
- The scanner works (I can scan a page and view it on my computer)
- Printer report works (that's where I got the IP address)
- On Mac's Printer & Scanners, the printer is recognized and connected
- However, when I print a document, the queue shows up, shows the job is being processed. However, the printer does not move at all. I cannot hear the cartridge move. Then the queue shows that the job is done and the queue is empty.
Please help!

I would like to help you print from your Mac to your Deskjet 3054. I understand the print queue says that the print job was done but nothing prints. Please follow the steps below and let me know the outcome of your efforts;
Reset Printing System
Click the Apple icon (   ), and then click System Preferences.
In the Hardware section, click Print & Fax/Scan. The Print & Fax/Scan dialog box opens.
Right-click (or  Ctrl  +click) in the left panel, and then click Reset printing system…
Click OK to confirm the reset.
Type the correct Name and Password.
Click OK to reset the printing system. The Print & Fax dialog box shows no printer selected
Note: This will remove all printers in the print and Fax/Scan, any printer removed can be re-added later by clicking the plus (+) symbol.
Repair Disk Permissions
On the Dock, click Applications, and then click Utilities.
Double-click Disk Utility.
Highlight your hard drive/partition on the left (by default this is "Macintosh HD").
Click the Repair Disk Permissions button at the bottom of the window.
Once the repair is complete, restart the computer and add the printer back.
Install the HP Printer Drivers for OS X.
When you add the printer, please ensure you are using the HP driver, not the AirPrint driver.
Select Add other Printer or Scanner
Select the printer you are adding and next to 'Use' you can select the printer driver

Safari not connecting but Firefox working

Have been having problems connecting to my home wireless system today. Finally resolved that issue but now only the Firefox browser is working not safari. I'm sure I've reset something wrong but what any ideas?

Use Spotlight to search for a file called login.keychain. Users/YourUserName/Library(which is a hidden folder and won't show in Finder)/Keychains. Click Go in the menu bar then Go to Folder and type in /Users/YourUserName/Library and hit the enter key. Look down the list of folder and find Keychains. The "login.keychain" file should be inside.

It's stands to reason, that Mail is outdated. Use Software Update to update your os as well as Mail and anything else that needs to be updated showing up in Software Update.

N8 not charging but still working

I bought my new Nokia N8 2 weeks ago. At first time when I charged my phone it was all right. At the second and third time there was a small problem and I must about 2 minutes take out and in my phone loader but it's finally worked. But at the fourth time loader didn't working. I'm not destroyed my phone loader or something like that.. Phone is not bad because I charge it my old loader from nokia E66 and it was working. Please help what I should do.

I would suggest that you take your phone charger cables etc (in other words the box and everything that came in it) back to the shop you bought it from and see if they can help. It may be a faulty charger or a faulty battery, who knows. See if they will swap your whole package for a new one.

SG300-24P (SRW2024P-K9) System LED's will not light but switch works fine

I have two SG300-24P (SRW2024P-K9) switches installed and working fine but the system LED on lower left front corner does not come on. Any suggestions for us to get these lights to properly indicate the system is powered up and working?

ZEN Nano Plus 1Gb Not Recognised, but 256Mb Works F

HI all, I've searched the FAQ but can't find anything like the problem I'm experiencing here.
I purchased a 256Mb Zen Nano Plus for my son at Christmas, and a Gb Zen Nano Plus for my wife. The 256Mb unit installed perfectly, works perfectly, no issues.
However the Gb unit does not install correctly - Windows XP SP2 recognises it as a Creative unit, although it takes an age for it to recognise the disk dri've. It appears in device manager as a generic storage volume with no drivers installed, and does not appear under My Computer - I can't even tell what firmware version is installed.
I've installed the correct drivers from Creative Technical Support. Have also tried to update the firmware, but the updater cannot find the Gb unit connected to the system.
After trying various driver updates on my own PC, uninstalling the software, reinstalling, Creative support suggested it's faulty and I should get a replacement.
Well the replacement arri'ved today and it has EXACTLY the same problems - can anyone help or advise?

Arcl, I haven't a clue what's happening - have spent the best part of 5 days fiddling and installing/reinstalling. As you say, the drivers for the 256Mb and Gb are exactly the same, so why one unit should work perfectly and the larger unit refuse to work at all, I have no idea.
As stated elsewhere it appears to be some sort of compatibility issue, but I've tried it without ANY other USB devices connected, have updated my USB and Chipset drivers, and it's got me nowhere. Looks like I'll be getting a refund and going for a Sony player similar to my own, as although the software's clunky I know at least it works and is pretty much hassle-free.
Why does it seem to be a problem with the Gb units though? Both cadman and Nespa in the other thread are experiencing issues with the units, I assume they're Gb too?

IPod Classic 5G 80GB is not docking but USB works fine. Ideas?

My iPod 5G 80GB Classic not docking to a few new radios I bought. I tried the Luna Voyager and also the Logitech Pure-fi Express Plus. Nothing happens (as if I wasn't docking it). The USB connection to my computer works fine. I tried reformatting the iPod, restoring from iTunes, boot diagnostics, etc. and nothing seems wrong. The products state I am supposed to be able to dock this iPod. Any ideas as to what might be going wrong? Could it be the v1.3 firmware or a hardware issue? Anyone knows the protocol and how to diagnose it properly?

The same problem I have today afternoon.
My car audio system is compatible with iPod USB connector and worked fine for also 6 months.
When connecting my iPod nano 6rd gen via USB to car audio system, iPod displays on its screen a sucessfull connection, and music tracks is successfully displayed on the car audio system. But do not play. Switch forward or backward by playlist (by the buttons on the car audio system) works also, but still there is no start playback.
I tried plugged my iPhone 5 via USB to car audio system - it's works fine.
I plugged iPod to my mac computer - itunes says it's all Ok.
I am confused and do not understand what is happening.
May be restoring to default factory settings iPod....
