Centering a page in a browser window.

A friend called me up over the weekend wondering how to get a page to center in a browser window. I was caught off guard and told him I would have to call him back (Not working with Dreamweaver or HTML on a daily basis can cause the simplest things to become foggy or lost.) The best I could tell from one of my Dreamweaver books is that you need to set all of the margins to zero in the property inspector. This should make sure all of the areas around the page are equal.
I want to make sure so I come here seeking the final answer. Was I correct with the margins to zero answer?
Thanks,
Ken

This gets asked a lot.  You really only need 3 things to center a page.
1) a valid document type declaration on the top of your page.  DW does this for you when you open a new HTML document.
2) A declared container width in pixels, ems or percentages.
3) Margin-left and margin-right set to auto.
CSS Code:
#container {
width: 900px;
margin: 0 auto; /**this centers container in modern browsers**/
text-align: center; /**this centers container in old browsers**/
HTML Code:
<body>
<div id="container">
your page content goes here
</div>
</body>

  • Help centering web pages in all browser windows

    I have searched around and tried out a few code suggestions
    for getting web pages to be centered in all size browser windows,
    but none of them seem to work. I am starting to wonder if it is
    because I used tables to make up my pages- the background stays
    centered, but they do not. Any suggestions? If it is the fact that
    I used layers, is there a quick fix or do I have to start from
    scratch on my pages?
    Thanks!

  • Linking a page as a browser window from a drop-down menu item

    I have tried to link from a drop-down menu item to link to a small browser window instead of a full page.  I tried using the "behaviors" but I got both the regular page and the browser window.  Is there a way to make it just the browser window.
    Thanks.

    I tried that target=_Blank" but I still got the regular page plus the small browser window .  I got rid of the Behavior for now.  My aim is to would display the page in a simple 450 wide x 450 long browser window with a scroll bar with nothing else.  If you can give me a code hint to do that, It would be appreciated.  I'll figure out the rest.
    My HTML coding skills are limited, as I'm used to using FP.(FP seems to be to the Web circles as the Bard's Scottish Play is to the theatrical world)

  • Centering my page in the browser

    Hi,
    I am designing a website using css, is there a way of centering a page vertically?  I have set my left and right margins to auto so the page sits in the middle of the browser window horizontally, but is there a way of doing this vertically too?
    Thanks in advance,
    Andy

    I have never seen a need to do that so I havn't tried it myself but maybe this will help get you in the right direction:

  • I click on a link or start typing text in a box on a webpage, any page, and the browser window either randomly changes size, reduces & goes to the toolbar, or some other strange random thing occurs. Why is this?

    Whenever I am using Firefox, when I am on a webpage (any webpage) & I either click on a link in that page, start typing in a box, click on a button, or click on a tab, the browser window either reduces to the toolbar, or just changes size, usually from full-screen to 2/3 of its size. I reinstalled Firefox (downloaded from the web) after wiping my hard drive because I was having so many problems from my browser constantly crashing, to the computer itself crashing often, to the computer running exceptionally slow. At first everything seemed fine. But then after having opened my computer a few times, a few different windows began to freeze, then that stopped, then this thing with the browser started a few times later after opening it. Now it does it every time I open it. Also, whenever I try to click on a button on other windows on my computer, I get the 'warning' sound, nothing happens, then after a couple more tries, the button works. All of this is just weird. I had antivirus protection on my computer, but it apparently did not catch whatever virus infected my computer, or the damage was already done when it did get it. I thought once the hard drive was wiped, that everything would be ok, but then these weird things began to start up, and now I am wondering.... Of course, it could also be something wrong with the browser, too. I've also had some trouble getting my printer to working again, but I've managed to solve that problem.

    I have had a similar problem with my system. I just recently (within a week of this post) built a brand new desktop. I installed Windows 7 64-bit Home and had a clean install, no problems. Using IE downloaded an anti-virus program, and then, because it was the latest version, downloaded and installed Firefox 4.0. As I began to search the internet for other programs to install after about maybe 10-15 minutes my computer crashes. Blank screen (yet monitor was still receiving a signal from computer) and completely frozen (couldn't even change the caps and num lock on keyboard). I thought I perhaps forgot to reboot after an update so I did a manual reboot and it started up fine.
    When ever I got on the internet (still using firefox) it would crash after anywhere between 5-15 minutes. Since I've had good experience with FF in the past I thought it must be either the drivers or a hardware problem. So in-between crashes I updated all the drivers. Still had the same problem. Took the computer to a friend who knows more about computers than I do, made sure all the drivers were updated, same problem. We thought that it might be a hardware problem (bad video card, chipset, overheating issues, etc.), but after my friend played around with my computer for a day he found that when he didn't start FF at all it worked fine, even after watching a movie, or going through a playlist on Youtube.
    At the time of this posting I'm going to try to uninstall FF 4.0 and download and install FF 3.6.16 which is currently on my laptop and works like a dream. Hopefully that will do the trick, because I love using FF and would hate to have to switch to another browser. Hopefully Mozilla will work out the kinks with FF 4 so I can continue to use it.
    I apologize for the lengthy post. Any feedback would be appreciated, but is not necessary. I will try and post back after I try FF 3.16.6.

  • Help with linking to a web page within same browser window

    I just upgraded my Flash MX to CS5.5 and am completely stumped at what would appear to be the most basic of functions.
    I have a small Flash movie that is embedded on a site. At the end of the movie, there is a call to action to click to another page on that site. However, it appears the only action in the Code Snippets panel is for an action that opens a new browser window. I miss the basic actions panel! Am I missing something here? How do I accomplish what I need to? I tried changing the code to "_self" instead of "_blank" but that doesn't work
    Here's the code:
    button_5.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK,fl_ClickToGoToWebPage_9);
    function fl_ClickToGoToWebPage_9(event:MouseEvent):void
        navigateToURL(new URLRequest("purchase.html"), "_blank");

    You know, I tried that twice, and it didn't work...now it worked. Go figure
    Must have had something else wrong in the code.
    Thanks!

  • Opening remote page in new browser window

    Hi there,
    my applet used the browser window as its frame, that means there is nothing else but the applet. I need to call a page from the same server as the applet resides, but to display the page in a new browser window. The following code could do the job, but caused the browser to block the popup.
    applet.getAppletContext().showDocument(new URL
                            ("http://mydomain/mypage.jsp"),"_blank");I'm wondering whether I could access a servlet from my applet and let the servlet accomplish this and how to.
    It would be also of interest whether it is possible to do the same with a page from a remote server and triggering the client to display the page in a new window.
    Any help is highly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
    Stephan

    Sorry, mixed up my versions a bit. The following code doesn't open a new window.
    try {
                JSObject window;
                window = JSObject.getWindow(this);
                URL url = new URL(this.getCodeBase(), "mydomain/mypage.jsp");
                window.eval("window.open(" + url +")");
            catch (Exception e) {
                e.printStackTrace();
    }It doesn't do anything, instead I'm getting the following output in the trace:
    liveconnect: the url of the applet is http://localhost:29080 and the permission is = false
    liveconnect: JavaScript: UniversalBrowserRead enabled
    liveconnect: JavaScript: UniversalJavaPermission enabled
    liveconnect: JSObject::eval(window.open(http://localhost:29080/mydomain/mypage.jsp))
    liveconnect: the url of the applet is http://localhost:29080 and the permission is = falseI'm testing this code on Linux, FIrefox 1.5.0.3 and JDK1.5.0_07.
    What I'm doing wrong?
    Thanks.

  • Keeping all pages in one browser window

    I'm trying to figure out how to have all of my pages for my
    site open under one browser window instead of opening up a new
    window when each button is clicked.
    I built Flash buttons for the pages and they work fine...I'm
    new at this and haven't figured out how to get the pages to open up
    in the main (index.html) browser window. I've tired doing it using
    the Add Behaviors, GoToURL selection but it doesn't work...also the
    only selection that appears is Main Window*, and I don't know what
    the * signifies. I'm sure that this is simple...help please!

    > I built Flash buttons for the pages and they work fine
    Does the page use Frames?
    http://livedocs.adobe.com/flash/9.0/main/00001180.html
    note this paragraph:
    Security note: In Flash Player 9 and later, when code in a
    SWF file that is
    running in the local-with-filesystem sandbox calls the
    getURL() function and
    specifies a custom window name for the window parameter, the
    window name is
    transfered into a random name. The name is in the form
    "_flashXXXXXXXX",
    where each X represents a random hexadecimal digit. Within
    the same session
    (until you close the containing browser window), if you call
    the function
    again and specify the same name for the window parameter, the
    same random
    string is used.
    so, targeting named frames is effectively broken when viewing
    local files
    AFAIK.
    They should work as intended when uploaded to a server.
    If that's not it, url address to the uploaded page please.

  • Need Help Centering Page in Browser Window

    I'm designing my pages by creating a graphic framework in
    Photoshop, slicing and exporting images into css using Fireworks to
    a Dreamweaver html page. These pages look great; but they load into
    the upper left corner of the browser window
    I was taking a Dreamweaver class at the Denver Art Institute,
    that was worthless. I dropped the class after the 4th week and am
    now teaching myself. I asked the teacher how to center this kind of
    page in a browser window, so the page would behave like most
    webpages, centering as you change the width of the browser window.
    I also wanted to add a repeating pattern in a background image. She
    told me that she didn't know how, that I would have to build the
    background into my Photoshop file. So, that's what I've been doing.
    However, when people with smaller monitors change pages within a
    site the built-in background requires them to recenter the page
    manually each time.
    Is there a way to center the page and add a background image
    that is not built in? I've tried using Dreamweaver's background
    image and margins in the Page Properties; but that just pushes the
    page to the upper left and adds the background to the right and
    bottom of the page.

    >I was taking a Dreamweaver class at the Denver Art
    Institute, that was worthless
    Yes, those classes usually are worthless because they focus
    on using the tool without giving you the proper foundation for
    understanding and managing html and css. Unfortunately, all of the
    example sites you gave you AP Divs (layers) as a primary layout
    method, which is a terrible approach. AP Divs should be used rarely
    if ever, and only when you understand how they work. When the
    visitors font is sized differently than you expected, the site
    falls apart. The correct approach is to learn web
    design/development outside of the context of a specific
    application.
    http://www.w3schools.com/html/
    is a good place to start for a basic understanding of html and css.
    And some basic layout techniques can be found here:

    Hello Mehaga,
    the page does look nice, but I'm afraid that you have used over 30 absolutely positioned divs to create the page - this is not really the best way to create a website  :-)    This is the way most beginners create a page, not realising that there are many problems associated with using AP divs.  ONe of them is that the AP Divs are located at the exact co-ordinates (Top, Left) you specify in the stylesheet - that's the reason why the middle content area is not positioned in the center of the browser window.
    Here's why it's not a good reason to AP divs:
    http://apptools.com/examples/pagelayout101.php
    There is a technique to center the page in all browser window sizes, however, your page has AP divs all over the place and in no  specific order - so it is not going to be as simple as the advice in the DW FAQ that David pointed you to I'm afraid.

  • Indesign keeps centering the page on screen - ID9.2 BUG?

    Hi, a little help from the Adobe please...
    Over the last week or so we have noticed that the latest version of InDesign CC (9.2) has a page viewing bug. Or at least it's a bug for us here. Adobe might have added it as a feature, but to us it's a bug.
    Not all the time, but about 95% of the time, InDesign is centering the page in the open window when you click in a text box, when you swap between open windows (cmd & ~) and when you press tab and you don't have a text box selected.
    To explain the annoyance: When we are viewing a double page spread, we click into text boxes on both pages to edit text and InDesign automatically centers one of the pages on the screen. This is not always the page that you are working on. This is a pain as the text box you have just clicked in to edit may now be outside of the viewable window and you then need to scroll over to see that portion of the page.
    On top of this the bug is playing havoc with our eyes as it keeps shifting the pages, sometimes by about an inch and suddenly where you were looking is no longer there, it's moved an inch. Grrrrrr.
    We are running Mac OSX 10.8.5, InDesign CC 9.2, dual monitor setups, Wacom Intuos 5 tablets (not mice). We cannot use Application Frame as we are running Apple 23" screens and have all our pallettes on the 2nd screen so that we can see a full A4 page at 100% on the main monitor. We have had these hardware setups for the last 3 years+ and this bug has only reared it's head in the last week... hence we think it's in ID 9.2.
    Does anyone know what this is and whether it is a new setting Adobe have introdcued that needs to be switched off somewhere?
    Manyn thanks,
    Tom Grzelinski

    quite amazing - after about 3 hours "cleaning", my MAC catalogue has gone from 4.5GB, to 600MB.  And (touch wood) it seems to "work" again now.  From that info, theres a couple of decent artcles on the net-

  • Resizing height width of adf  components when maximizing browser window

    Hi All,
    I am using JDeveloper 11.1.1.4. I have one one panelCollection and an af:table inside it in my page. The browser window that contains the page will initially have a width and height of 1030,340. When user maximizes the window i want to stretch both the width and height of the components inside it. While doing maximize i want to increase the height and width of the panelcollection and the table inside it.I am able to stetch the width using stretch layout and AFStretchWidth style. But resizing the height of the components is the problem.
    First of all is it possible ? Please help me to get to a conclusion for this.
    Thanks,
    Priya.

    Hi,
    Even if i use panelstretch layout i need two or more compoennts (table,panelgrouplayout,...etc) need to aligned horizontally inside the stretch layout so it is not stretching the height. To solve this problemm i wrote a javascript which catches the resize event of the window and in that i am setting the height of the compoents depending upon the size of the outer most layout. The javascript that i used is
    $(window).bind('resize', function() {
    var height = document.getElementById('pt1:pt_psl1').offsetHeight;
    var pcHeight = height - 50;
    document.getElementById('pt1:pgl3').style.height = pcHeight + 'px';
    document.getElementById('pt1:pc1').style.height = pcHeight + 'px';
    This works fine in Firefox and chrome browser, but in IE it is not working. That is in IE the method is not getting invoked while clicking on maximize button of the window. Does anybody have any solution for this ?

  • Browser window gone! Happened when I downloaded bar "partially" to get coupon. cancelled before finished. Deleted it in computer...still no browser

    Made the unwise decision looking for a coupon to download a bar. Canceled before it finished .. went into computer and deleted. Everything there on my page except the browser window/bar My page is I think an AOL Firefox page. When I turn on computer normally I have a big search engine in the middle which I ignore. I go to browser and start www.aol (never have to finish..drop box has log in..click)& Huffington post comes with email available. Have my news & then go to email. I like that! Now NO browser window!! To get to email had to go to history and find past & update! Clicked on browser control...warnings & error! How do I fix this? Not tech y so please easiest fix?!
    Windows 7...apparently Firefox auto took me to 25.0.1.
    Normally have only good things to say...this was my doing...hope you all can help me easily undo!!

    Well now I have lost my Firefox emblem, file, edit, history, etc. & most important can't click on help or settings because all is gone! I was able to get into mail before by going to history and finding AOL.
    Now I can click at top and still have open windows at top and one is AOL...but if lose that & I'm really lost!!
    When on AOL there is only that page...nothing else. At some point yesterday I clicked on settings (I think) & somehow stumbled on page that said the following...
    Config Proxies to access (something) then boxes I'll list not marked but one marked.
    no proxy...auto detect proxy...manual proxy config (Use system proxy was checked) then many many things with boxes not filled in...like HTTP,SSI,FTP, Socks host...below that socks v5 checked.
    Then a box that said above no proxy for...inside said, local host 127.0.0.1
    Below box it said Example: Mozilla.org.net.nz or maybe mz...192.168.l.0/24
    Then an unchecked box saying:proxy config URL:
    I am truly afraid to touch anything but what do I have to lose now...guess nothing. Have read all the problems everyone is having..whats up with all that!! Read somewhere that if I had an AOL proxy setting I have to un-install Firefox & start over. Honestly that is beyond me...my son first installed everything on computer when new. Apparently I had checked for firefox to auto update... knew there were problem's with this...or maybe I just got tired of them telling me & did it myself.
    Where do I, a novice, go from here? I gathered I caused this myself when I tried the d___ bar for coupons. This is when everything happened. Should I go to one of those free places to check for malware? Must go now but will check for response later aft. Thank you for trying to help me!
