Centering the entire site

I've decided to venture out and learn CSS, but I've a long way to go.
I've watched many videos and read up on "how to's" as well as key benifits of CSS.
So I've decided to start with a css template in DW and work backwards rather that open notebook and start typing.
The template I've chosen seems to open (F12) in left screen mode. I like all my sites "centered."
I used to just add this line and all was well <div align="center"> but that doesn't seem to work with my new CSS template design.
Can centering be accomplished as easily with CSS?

You need only three things to center a web page.
1) A valid document type. Good new is that DW does this for you when you open a new document.
2) A declared container width in pixels, ems or percentages.
3) A margin-left and margin-right value of "auto."
NOTE: container position should be set to default (which is no positioning at all). The exception to this rule is if you plan on using Absolutely Positioned divisions (APDivs) inside your container (not usually recommended). If you're using APDivs, you will need to set your container position to "relative" or the page won't center.

Is there a way for me to block a page within a website without blocking the entire site?

I want to block some kids from my son's Facebook profile, if I block them using FB he will just unblock them. I've tried altering the hosts file but it doesn't work unless I block FB entirely. Is there a way to block pages from a site without blocking the entire site?

* Right-click empty space within the page and click '''View Page Info'''
* In the '''Page Info''' window, select the '''Permissions''' panel and change the setting to '''Block''' for all options

IWeb wants to upload the entire site

I'm using iWeb with UK2.net to host my site. The problem I'm having is this; iWeb will take six hours to upload the site to uk2.net, and it seems to fine online but after the upload I get an error message telling me something went wrong. All the side bar icons remain red. So that means I have reload the entire site any time I want to add an update. It seems to want to upload the main hosting folder by over-righting it and that is why it takers so long. Has anyone else experienced this problem and has anyone any suggestion how to fix this?

The iWeb FTP does upload the whole folder of files created by the application although it shouldn't take 6 hours !
The alternative is to publish to local folder and upload using an FTP application. This way you can see the files on the server too to make sure they are all being uploaded and to the correct place...

The fact that you are getting an error message and the pages remain red in iWeb means the all the files aren't getting uploaded or the application is not creating the assets.http file correctly. Try the troubleshooting steps under "Fix iWeb" on this page...

Cloaking the entire site's URL in address bar

Should be a simple one for ya. Purchased a .com domain, and once it went online I noticed that instead of just www.habittheharley.com showing in the address bar, it shows the indivual page names, some of which look untidy. I remember back in the day when I used to get CJB to just cloak my entire site to example.cjb.net, it was a fairly simple tickbox option i recall.
How do I get it to somehow cloak the entire website URLs to be just habittheharley.com, instead of habittheharley.com/contact or habittheharley.com/photoblog? My domain/hosting provider had no idea when I rang them (netfirms)

That would be a good enough reason to tell this host goodbye in my opinion. How can they help you with something important if they can't answer this simple one.
There would be two ways to do what you want -
Use frames. The only URL that appears in the address bar is the URL of the frameset page. This 'solution' would be like shooting yourself in the foot, but it is one way to solve the problem
Use .htaccess or mod-rewrite (*nix, and Windows, respectively) to rewrite your URLs to whatever you want.
There's actually a third way - don't worry about it at all. Surely there are more important fish for you to fry?

Unable to update the entire site

Every time I try to do a site wide update of all the
templates and library items I am getting the following error and
then dreamweaver cs3 crashes.

Dreamweaver is currently interacting with a server.
Since checking out a file required interaction with a server
as well, Dreamwever cannot currently perform this task.
Please try again when the current server is complete.
Any help is appriciated.

Putting a coloured border on the entire site

I know this is going to sound very stupid, but does anyone
know how to put a coloured border on a site? I have the main table
of text in the middle, with about a 2" border either side of it and
al I want is to be able to change it to blue. If you can help,
please make instructions simple to follow as I 'm not very
technical and find all this stuff hard work.

How to make 1 spry menu for the entire site? but not on each page

i have a website that i wish to have multiple pages available all form the same menu and late and probably at regular intervals add more tabs to the menu
is there a way to create a spry menu speratley that the page some how references, something like a frameset but without using framesets?
im sort of new to webdesigning and unsure of the correct terminology, so i am finding it difficult to look up stuff that i don't know the name for, but will gladly go read someting if you point me in the right direction.

You can do this with PHP or ColdFusion
These are "server side" scripting languages so you will have to test your website after you upload to you web hosting account.
Or if you set up a local server. Without the local server you will get errors when you open them in firefox.
To use the following what you do is "Cut" the part you want to be on all pages out, "Paste" it into a seperate document and in its place on your page you put one of the following suitable tags.
You will also have to rename your main file to .php or .cfm as opposed to .html
Again, whatever page you put one of these tags on, their extention must change match the type of tag used.
First Method (PHP):
PHP is the more common method -
<?php @ require_once ("yourMenu.html"); ?>
Require_once is basically a safeguard so that you don't add the menu twice onto a page.
This will only work for PHP 4+
This method would work for older versions of php too -

Second Method (ColdFusion):
This will only work if your host has ColdFusion installled -

Can I publish one page at a time to the ftp when publishing entire site?

I am currently using iweb to manage my website and i changed a number of pages and require to re-publish the entire site. When i go to do this it attempts to bundle all the files together and publish, but the site only allows for 8 connections via ftp. Is there a way that when i publish the entire site that i can publish one page at a time?

Note: Internet Explorer and Firefox often have problems with images with reflections. This tutorial describes how to easily convert the image and it's reflection into a single jpeg file: #7 - Converting Photos w/Frames, Drop Shadows and/or Reflections into a Single JPG Image.

Create a PDF from webpage using entire site option doesn't works

OK, guys, this is the problem...
After YEARS of testing from Acrpbat 4 thru 9 on Create a PDF from webpage using entire site option... it doesn't works properly and doesn't got the entire site. ALWAYS get an error of memory or any other error but FINALLY you NEVER got the entire site. I'm talking for a big website... not like amazon.com, but a big one.
I make a walkarround to try to capture the website in parts but Acrobat is not "intelligent" to make a resume capture of the site, because ALWAYS start from the begining instead from the resume position of the site...
My question is, HOW can get the ENTIRE SITE in a PDF document... without getting errors or stopping the capture process...
Don't have problem of low RAM memory because I'm in a MONSTER MACINTOSH.... 3.2 GHZ with 8 Core and 32 GB of RAM under Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.6 in Acrobat 9 Pro.
If I'm not wrong, the GET ENTIRE SITE option in Web Capture (Create a PDF from webpage using entire site option) doesn't works from Acrobat 4 thru 9 in Pro version... tested, you'll never got the entire site... I'm talking in capture a huge entire site and not a little one...

Ok so I go to a web page and select something to print. Once I've clicked print I switch over from printer/micosoft xps docu writer/fax and select Adobe PDF. All goes through with a 'Create Adobe PDF' coming up progressing through to eventually save and store. Once I open the file it end up as the picture above. I have the same version on another computer and that works fine but this particular Sony laptop it doesn't seem to work properly.

Applying a new template to entire site?

Is there an easy way to apply a new template to the entire
site? I created a new template and I can open each page
individually and click MODIFY/TEMPLATES/APPLY TEMPLATE TO PAGE but
there has to be an easier way to apply the new template to the
entire site without having to open every single page in the
site.

That would be true ONLY on pages that are already child pages
of templates.
Try it on a page that is not a child page, but that has
existing content.

The Strange Case of the Disappearing Site

It's one thing after another all of a sudden. I've just opened iWeb on my desktop and found that the entire site is no longer there. This happened once before, a few months ago, and (following excellent advice on this discussion board) I clicked Spotlight and entered ‘.site’ in the little window. Top Hit was ‘Domain’, which I clicked. My iWeb site was immediately repopulated.
However, following the same procedure this time produces no result whatsoever.
Anybody...?

After I posted my question I restarted the computer and tried the Spotlight/.site/Domain route several more times to no avail. Then I did something different on the computer and tried the route again without much hope of success - and this time it worked. No rhyme or reason that I can see.
But thanks for your suggestion, Tom. I'll remember to try that if it happens again.

Can't "get" entire site

Hello,
I'm trying to get my entire site using DW 5.5 so that I can work on it locally, but lots of the file are being left behind. I follow the instructions to do so, click yes when prompted if I want to get the entire site and the process begins. It then stops, saying that it's complete, but most of the data is missing. It manages to get about 350mb but the total size of the site is nearly 4gb.
Any advice much appreciated.

Why don't you just access the site by ftp and get the files...........I never use Dreamweaver for putting or getiing anything.....it's useless in that regards.
Geez just read 4gb.... what is it a hi-res image/video library? I would definitely either use ftp or maybe go into the sites control panel and make a back up of the site files and download them from there. Most control panels send you a link to a download zip file once the server has backed up the files.

CS3 Synchronization Problems (Entire Site)

The following problems occur when I attempt to synchronize my
entire site (954 files) using DW 8 Windows, DW 8 Mac, or DW CS3
Mac. (If I select a group of files, synchronization always works as
advertised.)
1. If I tell DW to synchronize the entire site (in either
direction) and specify that it should delete files, synchronization
eternally builds a file list. DW doesn't hang; I can cancel out of
it and continue to use DW.
2. If I tell DW to synchronize the entire site (in either
direction) without specifying that it should delete files, DW most
often incorrectly announces that no synchronization is necessary.
Immediately afterwards, if I use the icon on the top left of the
files panel and select
Edit | Select Newer Local or
Edit | Select Newer Remote, DW correctly identifies the
files that have changed. I get the same behavior if I do those two
things in the opposite order. In other words, DW simultaneously
knows and doesn't know which files are newer.
Is there a fix or a workaround?

I dunno. Go into DW8 and EXPORT the site definitions with
their login info.
Import them into CS3.
