Change Default Finder Column Width

Is it possible to change the default widths of the columns in Finder windows? I know that I can temporarily change it, and as long as I don't restart, all subsequent windows will open at this width. But is there a way to make the change the new system default?

This may be it...

I didn't have theNlisv, and can't reboot to test right now.
If you do not have a Nlsv item, quit Property List Editor, go to the Finder and open a directory window, change View to "as List," select "Select View Options," click on "All windows," change one of the items shown, and close the View Options window. This will write to the Finder's com.apple.finder.plist file within a few seconds.

  • How to persist change in finder sidebar width?

Hello guys, I want to persist change in finder sidebar width once I change it. Now what happens is that I drag to resize then go to view->show view options->Use as defaults but next time I create a new folder, it resizes to wrong setting again. I even tried resizing by holding option but no result. How can I persist this change in width
This is what it looks like when new folder is created:
but I want it to be like this each time:
    How can I achieve this?
    Thank you

    Hi kashif789us,
Thanks for the question.   For most applications, when you resize a window, you need to quit the app and relaunch it for the changes to take affect.   The Finder app is a little different, since you can't quit it.
I would recommend that you make the change to the sidebar width, then choose Force Quit from the Apple menu.  You will be given the option to relaunch the Finder app.  When you do, choose File > New Finder Window.   You should see the resized sidebar in the new window.  When you restart your Mac, this same window should persist.
OS X Yosemite: Customize the Finder toolbar and sidebar
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH19079
    Customize the sidebar
Hide or show the sidebar: Choose View > Hide Sidebar or View > Show Sidebar. (If Show Sidebar is dimmed, choose View > Show Toolbar.)
Resize the sidebar: Drag the right side of the divider bar to the right or left.
Change what’s in the sidebar: Choose Finder > Preferences, click Sidebar, then select or deselect items.
Rearrange items in the sidebar: Drag an item to a new location. You can’t rearrange items in the Shared section.
Add a file, folder, or disk: Drag the item to the Favorites section.
If you don’t see the Favorites section, go to Finder > Preferences > Sidebar, then select at least one item in the section.
Add an app: Hold down the Command (⌘) key, then drag its icon to the Favorites section.
Remove an item: Drag the item icon out of the sidebar until you see a puff of smoke.
The sidebar link disappears, but the original item is still on your Mac. You can’t remove items from the Shared section.
To change other Finder preferences, choose Finder > Preferences. For more information, see Finder preferences.
To set the scrolling behavior for Finder (and other) windows, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click General.

OS X automatically relaunches the Finder when it is quit. If the Finder is unresponsive, use Force Quit to relaunch it. Select Finder in the Force Quit Window or Dock, then click Relaunch.
    Give it a try!

  • Changing datasheet view column width prompts for logon

Hello - I have a SharePoint 2010 farm at work that we are having undesirable logon prompts on at times. A reproducible example is the datasheet view of any library in our site. When a user switches from standard view to datasheet view & then resizes
a column, a logon dialogue box pops up. They can enter their username or cancel - either way they are allowed to continue. This occurs the first time the user tries to make a change to the column width, but not on subsequent attempts. If the view is reloaded
& they attempt to change the width again the logon box pops up again. Users only have read-only access to the view, so they cannot modify it. The 'Modify View' control in the ribbon bar is greyed out.
Background info: Clients are using Windows 7 SP1, Internet Explorer 10 (in compatibility view mode), and MS Office Pro Plus 2010 SP2. SharePoint is 2010 SP1 & June 2011 CU V1 (I know, we need to patch). The site is setup to use NTLM integrated authentication.
All PCs are configured via GPO to add the site to the local Intranet zone. The intranet zone is configured via GPO with medium-low settings & automatic logon in the intranet zone. I have verified the GPO propagation to client PCs and verified that
IE settings are correct for windows integrated authentication to take place.
    Any help is appreciated
    ~james

I am thinking this behavior is not by design. In my environment this is what happens:
A standard user (no modify view rights) changes a column width & gets prompted for credentials. It does not matter what they do - cancel, use own credentials, or use someone else's credentials (with modify rights) - the results are the same.
The view is not changed for everyone, just the local user. The change only applies to the current page load.
Users with modify view rights see no logon prompt.
I just installed Office 2013 with my test VM & the unwanted logon prompt is gone. My opinion is this is an unresolved issue with the Access Web Datasheet, 2010-version active-x plugin. It appears to have been fixed with Access 2013.
I'm going to do some more testing, but this is looking like another reason for an upgrade to Office 2013.
I tried changing the compatibility view settings, user agent string, Browser Mode, and Document Mode. None of the different combinations I tried had any effect on the logon prompt issue.
    Any other ideas?
    thanks

  • How to change Default Finder Windows Size?

    Hi all:
New Finder windows show Macintosh HD and there is no problem in keeping the size or view options every time I open a new window (command + N).
I can change "New Finder windows show" to another folder and works just as well.
But when I open a folder in a new window (double click on an icon folder) the size of the window is very small and different from the window displayed by using command + N.
Finder saves and applies default view options to all windows without a problem, but not the default size or in other words:
default windows size is different from new finder windows size.
In Snow Leopard I could change default size of all windows holding down the Shift key while dragging and changing the size but in Mountain Lion it does not work.
I have also deleted all files .DS_Store but neither works.
I searched a lot but can not find a solution to this problem.
    Thanks.

As far as New Finder Windows (command+N) are concerned, there's no problem.
All other folder's Finder Windows I have not modified manually are displayed with the default size shown in the attached image. That is the window size that I want to modify.
    Thanks.

  • Changing Default Finder Window

On my old iMac, I was able to change the default Finder window (when you clicked on it in the dock) from my home drive to my desktop, but now I can't remember how to do it. Any tips?
AKA: When I click on Finder in the dock, I don't want it to open up to my user window, I want it to open up to the desktop folder.
    Thanks!
    Matthew

At the Finder menu bar, go to Finder > Preferences > General.
Under "New Finder windows open:", select the radio button to the right of the current selection and at the pop-up menu that appears, select Other and then select Desktop.

  • Changing default JTable column headings

    Hi,
I've created a simple JTable using the following constructor:
    JTable table = new JTable ( numRows, numCols);
and I would now like to change the default column headings ("A", "B", "C" etc) to something else. I'm trying to use the following method
    setColumnIdentifiers
but how do I access the DefaultTableModel associated with table so that I can call this method?
Is there another way of changing the headings of my simple table?
    Thanks a lot,
    Leori.

    myTable.getTableHeader().getColumnModel().getColumn(0).setHeaderValue("Foo");

  • Finder columns width are very wide within an app

I have searched for an answer but can't find it. Since using Mavericks when I open a finder window within an app to open a document, the finder window is way too large. The columns are very wide and fall on to my second display. If I adjust this (and I have tried with the ALT button as well) the next time the problem keeps coming back.
    Any solutions?
    Thanks

I have this issue too - though I've been able to work around it a little by entering the file name in the search box.

  • Change default 'find' behavior to right justify

When using Find (Ctrl-f) to search for text within a web page the current behavior is to left justify the page to the text it found. This is particularly annoying since I then have to scroll back to the left to see the beginning part of the line.
Chrome and IE use this method so I find this extra step (I do it often for a locally produced web page) very annoying. I want to switch from using Chrome but since I use this page so often it may cause me to have to revert back to Chrome.
Sorry, I was unable to find a web page to help explain the behavior.
    Thanks.

Per FredMcD, I tried the 'Find Bar Tweaks' plugin that was featured but it has the same behavior. In playing around more I found that the behavior is slightly different from what I originally wrote. What I was seeing was that if the browser has scrolled to the right to find something previously then subsequent entries that match the criteria move the focus more left but not all the way - only to the match that it found.

  • How do you change the column widths in a master-detail input form?

I have changed several columns to af:inputText so that the field contents can be modified, but this defaults the column width to a huge size, way past the size of the actual data field itself. Modifying the width attribute is ignored and dragging the column dividers is also ignored.
How do I reduce the widths of these columns?
    Thanks

  • Changing dataGrid column width with actionScript

Having a strange change when trying to change any dataGrid column width with this code:
    dataGrid.columns[ 5 ].width = 200;
It do changes the width of column number 6 to 200, but strangely it's also changes the width of the preceding columns (0-4). Every preceding column automatically increases a little bit than its' existing width without having me any idea.
    Any idea anyone have!

  • Can I lock in a finder list mode column width?

Can I lock in a finder column width in list mode?
When I open a finder window in List Mode, the Date Modified column is always 6-8 inches to the right of the Name column.
This is very irritating because I often have to drag the window larger just to find the next column and then drag them closer to the Name column.
Even if all file names are short, the nearest colums are far away.
    This is very un Apple.
    Thanks.

Thanks CtDave.  I don't have anything besides the free reader, so I did some further research on the web and found a solution that is pretty "brute force", but is an option for others that only have the free reader.  Here is a link to the full description:
    http://superuser.com/questions/306803/zooming-size-of-pdf-files-and-bookmarks
Here is the basics:  You can use a text editor and edit the PDF file.  Once in the text editor you can search for /FitH or /Fit (there surely are other codes, but those are the only ones I know of).  These are codes that tell Acrobat what kind of zoom level to apply to the destination of a jump.  So the bookmarks should all have these.  Simply do a search and replace with /XYZ.  The /XYZ code tells Acrobat to leave the zoom level as it already is.
It might sound a bit weird, but I tried it on multiple files I was having trouble with and it worked great.  Of course, my suggestion would be to make backup copy of the file before doing this in case something goes wrong.
    Thanks.

  • How to stop table columns widths from drifting

I discovered that all the columns widths of my tables change on their own,
leading me with tables of different columns widths where I wanted to
maintain a strong cohesion of presentation among them.
Here is a scenario to reproduce and understand the problem:
    • create a new Pages'08 document;
    • insert a Table;
the 3 columns of this newly created table are 5.49 cm width each.
    Problematic case:
    • change the first column width with:<pre> Table > Table > Column Width > 5 cm</pre>   and hit return
    • the column width will switch to 5.01 cm
    • the 2 other columns widths will have switched to 5.50 cm.
Is there a technique, I didn't find yet, to define a table column to a
fixed value so that Pages'08 won't make it drift and wont touch to
    other columns width?

  • How to set and fix column widths in Mavericks?

Until recently I was using a Mid 2011 MBA with OS X 10.8.X.
I don't know what I did but the column widths in the Finder started to self-adjust to the longest filename.
Now I have migrated my user account from this MBA to a new MBP running OS X 10.9.1.
But the Finder in this account still has the same affliction, I can adjust column widths to where I want them but as soon as I click on a file or folder, the column widths readjust to the length of the longest file/folder name.
How can I stop the Finder from doing that automatically?
Thanks for your help and Happy Holidays!

    Dear William Lloyd:
I actually learnt how to do this from another post in this community just a few hours ago.
You adjust column wisth in Finder by placing your curser at the column edge and while holding Option key down, move column edge to the width you desire.
This will make a "sticky" change i.e., column widths will stay where you set until you chanage them.
I would like to to attribute this to the poster I learnt from but I am not able to find that post again.
    Cheers.
