Change Long Admin Name in System Preferences.

I recently upgraded to a MacBook Pro and when setting up the computer, I made my long name Dave's MacBookPro. Now when I go to log in it calls itself "Dave's MacBookPro's Macbook Pro". I went to Preferences and changed my long name to just Dave and everything is now ok...except when I go to System Profiler. When I click, About This Mac, on the top it still says "Dave's MacBookPro's MacBook Pro". Where do I go to change that setting, so it reads correctly. I don't plan on changing my shortname, so it shouldn't affect anything...Or can changing the long name affect any programs? Thanks.

no. the long login name is only used to set the computer name during the original computer set up. otherwise they have nothing to do with each other.

  • Changing Full Name in System Preferences... Any issues?

    Hey all,
Recently set up a new Mac on Mountain Lion. I initially set up my full name as my first name, and it based my short name on that. I'd like to change my full name in System Preferences to my first and last name. Will I run into any issues? I know messing with short names / home folder names can get messy and i assume this will be fine, but I figured I'd check.
    Thanks.

    Thank you.

  • I can't change Name in System Preferences / iCloud / Account Details

In this board, look at left area, My name is Joy Neop, but there are wrongs that my first name and last name changed position each other.
    I clicked "Account Details", and...
And I tried changing, but after I click "OK", nothing changed.
I then quit System Preferences and relaunch it, but the border's content turned back like the first capture shows.
    I need help...

There are no applications in your mobile documents folder.
Click on the Finder to activate it and then go to the "Go" menu, with the menu displaying hold down the alt key on your keyboard and you will see a "library" option appear in the menu. Select the library option from the menu and your finder window will change to display the contents of your library folder. Navigate to the mobile documents folder and look for a folder that is associated with your password app. Hopefully inside that folder you will find the document that you are looking for.

  • In Lion 10.7.x I cannot disable the Lock documents for 2 weeks in Time Machine! Thus it prevents to change anything else like the system preferences or other settings. How I can disable it?

Hello, In Lion 10.7.x I cannot disable the Lock documents for 2 weeks in Time Machine! Thus it prevents to change anything else like the system preferences or other settings. All is locked. How I can disable it?

Do you mean the check box isn't enabled?
Or you remove the check but it doesn't "stick"?
Or you remove the box but documents are stil getting locked?
That setting doesn't apply to other things in System Preferences, just apps that support AutoSave and Versions.  If you're having a problem with System Prefs, please clarify exactly what.

  • Changing the Admin name

How can i change the Admin name on my mac mini?

Do you mean the user account that has 'Administer this computer' privileges?
Once created, you can't (easily) alter a users name. ou could just create a new user with admin privileges and delete the old one( saving any data in the old users $HOME (~) first).

If you used system cache cleaning software it can mess up Apple software.  Stop using such software.  Remove Mackeeper if present using these directions:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3691
If you started typing something in the search field of the System Preferences, it might be hiding.   Quit and reopen System Preferences to be sure it isn't hiding because it is searching for another panel.
Lastly, if none of the above apply, go to your hard drive -> System -> Library -> PreferencesPanes folder and see if it is hiding there.  If it isn't, get your 10.5 installer disc that installed 10.5 on your Mac, and restore it with http://www.charlessoft.com/ 's Pacifist, and then run the 10.5.8 combo update to ensure the version matches the operating system.

Chances are you mis-typed a character in the Wifi password and the devices saved that information.  Now whenever you try to connect the device refers to the wrong password and the Jetpack does not accept your connection.  Tell your devices to forget the wireless connection and start over.
Once you enter the proper WiFi credentials the Jetpack will allow you to connect.

  • How do I change the admin name and password on my iMac?

How do I change the admin name and password on my iMac? It's been about two years since I've done that and I've totally forgotten how to. Your help is appreciated!

Hi Haldane, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Changing the name can be dangerous, use ChangeShortName 10.4 only...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/16620
Many way to change the PW then, the Accounts Pref Pane, unlock the Lock, click on change Password.

  • Changing "Short Name" in System Preferences?

I want to change the name that appears by the house icon in the finder windows. I opened system preferences, accounts, and noticed that it's the same as the short name, which is grayed out. How do I change it? I unlocked the lock, but it's still grayed out.
    Thanks!

Did either of you try this process and did it work ok? I am considering doing it and would just like reassurance that it is a good process, as I read in this link that it is incomplete: http://homepage.mac.com/frakes/MOSXPT/content/shortusername.html

  • Changing LONG user name?

I posted this over in the ARD forum, but I haven't had any takers, so I thought I'd ask here as well. Sorry for the cross-post.
Is there a way to change a user's LONG name via Terminal (or some other method that doesn't involve System Prefs --> Accounts).
We're migrating from AD to local accounts and currently, the long names are: Lastname, Firstname (my company domain yadda, yadda) and I'd like that to be simple First Last after the switch. I can fetch the name using (system info) in an Applescript, but I can't figure out how to change it that way, either.

    Use the dscl command.

  • Hide a admin account in System Preferences

Hi, I am trying to hide a admin user in the Accounts Pane in System Preferences. I followed the only instructions I could find http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20080127172157404, but it only hides it in login and fast user switching. Anybody got some ideas?
    Thanks

    Hi Dyenera,
Follow these steps to hide a user from the Accounts pane in System Preferences:
    1. Right click on the account you want to hide in the Accounts pane in System Preferences and choose "Advanced Options". You should be logged in as another admin account while doing this with the Accounts window unlocked.
    2. Change the User ID to a number between 300 and 499. e.g. 401 is usually free. You can check which numbers are free by executing "dscl . -list /Users UniqueID" in the Terminal. You will see a list of all the accounts on the machine most of which are already hidden and used various services in OS X.
    3. Change the Home Directory setting to /var/nameof_user_tohide so that other admin users won't delete it inadvertently or otherwise.
    4. Click OK to save these settings and then quit System Preferences
    5. You need to move the user's home directory to /var and change the ownership of the user's home folder now that you have changed the user's ID. E.g. In Terminal:
    mv /Users/nameof_user_tohide /var
    chown -R 401 /var/nameof_user_tohide
    6. Tell OS X to hide user's with a User ID less than 500 (This wasn't required in earlier versions of the OS): In Terminal: sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow Hide500Users -bool YES
    7. Reboot and enjoy!

  • How to change the admin name on Yosemite?

I just got a new MacBook Pro, the tech person that added additional memory created my admin name with a typo. It is driving me nuts.

Do you mean the "short" name or the "long" name? In either event try reading this and see if this helps solve the problem:

    Good luck...

Perhaps, it is because you did not click the "lock" button the last time you changed something in System Preferences. If I am not wrong, before OS X version 10.6.6, the operating system would just remember if you locked the System Preferences. However, in my opinion, you should bring your MacBook to your Apple Store and get this problem solved.
