Changeip question...

hi...
i need to change the subnet of my xserve... i presume i need to do so using the changeip command but i found this post
http://www.afp548.com/forum/viewtopic.php?forum=18&showtopic=12944&highlight=cha ngeip...
is that still accurate? if so, how does it work?
if its not the case, and i need to use changeip, are there any specific ways to do so? ie:
do i need to unplug the server from the network first?
do i need to remove its entry from the DNS server first?
if i'm not changing the host name, do i need to put it in the changeip command?
once i've run the changeip command, and changed the ip in network settings, do i need to reboot the server?
how can i check that the change of ip was 100% successful?
ah i nearly forgot, how does it apply when your xserver has 2 network cards?
thank you
  Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Hi:
You should be able to do this on a live server with no repercussions as the article in the link suggests. You are not changing the ip address as such, just the sub-net mask.
Regardless of whether you are using one or both NICs it wont matter either way if all you are doing is changing the sub-net mask on both NICs. However if you are using both and depending what services you are providing it could have repercussions. You have not gone into any detail regarding this. It cant hurt restarting the server.
You will have to make allowances for sub-net mask changes if you are hosting DHCP Services. Stop the DHCP Service first, make the changes in the Network Control Panel as well as DHCP Service then restart the server, after log-in restart the DHCP Service. DNS Service does not take account of the sub-net mask so this should not be affected.
As always make sure it is only the sub-net mask you are changing as well as having a fallback position in case it all goes wrong; ie: a full working backup.
Hope this helps – Tony

  • Mac OSX 10.5.3 Leopard STANDARD Server CHANGEIP questions

I am confused on how to check and change TCP/IP addresses via Mac OSX Leopard 10.5.3 server in STANDARD mode.
I watched the great Sean Colins Lynda.com tutorial on OSX 10.5 Server, but i still have a few questions with how to deal with DNSs and CHANGE IP
Here is the hardware & scenario:
-- G5 Silver Doors Tower with 1.7GB Ram and Mac OSX 10.5 Leopard 10 user server
-- Cablevision ISP with there BOOST service [that allows you to set-up a server and does not block ports 25 or 80]
-- NO Static IP from Cablevison [they change it once in a blue moon when they want so I rely on DYNDNS below]
-- Apple Airport TimeCapsule [with all latest firmware updates etc]
-- DynDNS account and client software installed on server to update the DYNDNS severs with the current Cablevisions TCP/IP address
    Problem and Question
    ===
Three times a year I will need to move this server. 1/3rd of year and at setup it is on residential Cablevision Account and Apple TimeCapsule Router, Then 2/3 of year server will be behind two funky large networks where I will have to set-up manual IP, DNS, and proxy info
I need to know what the proper process is when I want to move the Mac. When the 10.5.3 STANDARD Server is in STANDARD mode can I just change the TCP/IP address in SYSTEM PREFERENCES...NETWORK ? Do I have to run the CHANGEIP command Afterwards [or Before]
Also, for DNS config on server does it always need to have the loop back self reference [127.0.0.1] or can it just be configed from the Airport and/or network?
And, big problem for now... dumbly when I set-up the OSX Server on the TimeCapsule Network I forgot to write down the TCP/IP address used. Now I am on the second funky corporate network and can't use the command:
    sudo changeip - idon't_knowip 10.0.96.48 server.cmtenyoffice.com server.cmtenyoffice.com
Also, another question for the HOSTNAME... should it be HOSTNAME or FullyQuallifiedDomainName?
My HOSTNAME seems to be "CMTE-Server.local" but I specified the FullyQualifiedDomainName to "sever.cmtenyoffice.com"
NOTE: I do NOT have this domain registered and am not yet hosting a website or email server on this machine, but I may soon register the domain and then point MX records etc to the DYNDNS record that would point to server
    Anyhow, to wrap up,
1- What is the proper process for changing the TCP IP address with a Leopard 10.5.3 STANDARD SERVER?
2- What do I do with CHANGEIP command if I don't know what the STARTING TCP/IP address is?
3- For HOSTNAME should I be entering the unregistered FQDN or the "CMTE-Server.local"
Thanks for any an all info.

    Hi Eric
You use the one its using now.
If the Server is Standalone issue:
sudo changeip - oldIP newIP oldhostname newhostname
Even if nothing changes you can still issue the command, supply the system admin name and password and let it do its stuff. Prior to doing this you must change the address in the Network Preferences Pane. Although not necessary it does not hurt if you restart afterwards.
If the Server is an OD Master issue:
sudo changeip /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1 oldIP newIP oldhostname newhostname
You will not only be prompted for the system admin name and password but also for the Directory Administrator name and password. With both command you will get feedback as to what is going on. Obviously you will see more changes made if its an LDAP Server. Hostname will be the fully qualifed domain name (FQDN) defined in the DNS Service eg: myserver.mydomain.com.
    man changeip
For usage. Actually prior to doing any of this and incidentally a good way of finding out not only the hostname but also the IP address associated with that name issue:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
You should run this before/after making the change. If everything checks out OK it should report 'the names match, there is nothing to change'. This is a good a test that lets you know its worked. However its not the only test. I would run host, nslookup and dig also. Next set a client to use the Server for its DNS and then test connectivity with firstly the Server's fqdn and lastly its IP Address.
Ultimately the truest test is: "what impact has the change made on clients accessing the Server and its Services successfully?"
If the Server is a mature OD Master (possibly PDC as well) with DNS, Mail, AFP, SMB, iCal and any other 2-3 additional services configured and running then issuing changeip may appear - superficially - to have worked. Occsasionally - in my experience - serious problems begin to develop with the LDAP database to the extent where the only 'cure' is to demote to Standalone, sorting out DNS and re-promoting. This can have serious repercussions if you have not made preparations to limit the re-build time prior to changing the IP address and issuing the command. Equally it can be successful. However can you take the risk?

  • Leopard/AD integration- Managed preferences in OD questions

I have issues and questions with “golden triangle” set up.
Leopard 10.5.7 Server (already found the serial number snafu of upgrading to 10.5.8, and backed up a notch)
I have followed the Bombich “Leveraging” guide and have gotten to where it appears things are supposed to be. Yet things are not working as expected:
    DNS lookup works both ways.
My OD Server has been bound to AD.
    enabled Kerberos SSO.
Klist –ke shows me lists of services services@ADkerberosrealm
When I do the read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleFilServer kerberosPrincipal I see my ODservername@ADkerberosrealm.
So I Promoted server to to an OD master
Question: At this point is Kerberos supposed to be running on the OD server? It’s just using AD Kerberos info, not acting as an independent KDC at this point? It’s currently listed in Server Admin as not running.
Which may lead to my other issues:
Even though things appear to be setup correctly, and I can bind AD bound Leopard client computers (10.5.7) to OD,
Managed Preferences is a haphazard and frustrating thing.
If I add an AD/ OD bound client to a Computer group and manage say a few dock items- add a few, subtract a few for that group, no items in the client dock are removed, and sometimes(only sometimes) is an added item reflected in the dock.
Yet if I add a managed Login screen text Message- that shows up on the login screen.
Managing an individual computer instead of a group fares little better.
We need to manage groups of teachers on Mac clients with AD authentication by building location, and computer groups was the way that worked well in Tiger. But leopard clients didn’t play nice with the Tiger server. So I Upgraded (actually a clean install) to Leopard server and started from scratch to build an Leopard Golden Triangle with AD.
I am still at the point where it would annoy me but not inconvenience me horribly if I were to have to reinstall and start again, but as the start of school draws closer I’d R-E-A-L-L-Y like to get this working.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks In Advance

Go back and check DNS. Make sure forward and reverse both work. If DNS doesn't work, MCX will not work.
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
Kerberos needs to be running from AD, not OD. Also, as stated, you have to have OD first, then AD in your search path so it will use the MCX.
This is another issue I am dealing with. Not sure if this has been resolved. I was working on OS X 10.5.8 Server and had issues managing Computer Groups.

  • Please help wth a 'changeip' error

    Hey
We have just recently been turfed out of our office and relocated to different building. Our IT dept has informed us we need to change our servers IP address as they now need that for something else.
I have done as much research as I can and looked through countless discussion posts and manuals and have come to the conclusion that I have to use a command in terminal called 'changeip' reading furthur I believe I must also add 'sudo' the the start of this so that I am logged in as root.
our current IP address is : 172.16.64.10
and we need to change it to: 172.16.32.5
now as far as im aware my command should therefore be :
    sudo changeip /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1 172.16.64.10 172.16.32.5
This doesn't seem to work however. I do get a prompt for a password then I get the error:
'DNS doesn't not have a valid name for IP address 172.16.32.5
If DNS is not repaired, errors will be logged and functions will not work properly'
now I have just found a page saying that with servers running 10.4.6 or over (which we are) I must now "now use a fully qualified domain name (FQDN) with the command."
    I found this at :
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303495
To be honest im not exactly sure what this means, but the differences I see is that they include'testserver.example.com testserver2.example.com' after the IP addresses in the command.
In DNS on our server I believe our dominan name is:
    medusa.filton.ac.uk
My question is: does anyone out there think I have to enter this in my command or change something in DNS first so that my command functions.
Im basically looking for a guide to getting this IP swapped so I can start getting my macs back online and seeing the server again. From what i have read it should be reletivly simple or running the correct command and then going to network prefs and swapping them manually and restarting.
This as I feared is not the case
Any help would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks
    Ryan

I have checked with the IT bobs downsatirs and they do confirm that the IP does indeed have forward and reverse DNS lookups
That's a bit murky, so let's confirm, shall we?
Open Terminal and try the following:
    dig medusa.filton.ac.uk
    dig -x 172.16.32.5
    dig -x 172.16.64.10
If it's as they say, the replies should be, in order as above:
    172.16.32.5
    medusa.filton.ac.uk
    medusa.filton.ac.uk
Although the last answer is not entirely necessary to the exercise; they may have already re-assigned the old IP address. If it's different, note it and use it in the changeip command, like so:
    changeip [(directory|-)] old-ip new-ip [old-hostname new-hostname]
Which reminds me of a few things:
    1) I got this out of the following manual:
    <http://images.apple.com/server/pdfs/CommandLine_v10.4_2ndEd.pdf>
and it bears reading through every mention of the changeip command. (As well as, if so equipped, the code itself; see p. 66.) See p. 67 for a walkthrough of the procedure.
    2) The first argument ("directory") is important and you need to make sure it's correct for your network config.
    3) I've only used the command a few times myself, but I remember having to try it a few different ways, especially for the "directory" argument.

  • Kerberos feasibility questions

    Hi there,
I've been asked to support Kerberos authentication for an app-server product, and before saying "yes" gets me too far down the garden path, I wanted to run an approach by y'all and find out if it's feasible. Our scenario is that we have incoming security tokens derived from HTTP or SOAP headers but we do not directly control the connection to the client (this belongs in library code we're using). The questions that come out of this are:
    1. My understanding is that JGSS requires us to be able to go back & forth with the client to pass tokens around -- is it possible to do this with a single ticket from the client without multiple steps, or must one be able to support a multi-step protocol to have JGSS handle this?
    2. I understand that it's possible to subclass the JAAS Configuration class to set up one's own configuration specs for login modules to be invoked, which specifies the login modules on the basis of their class names -- if instead of doing this I manage the individual LoginModule classes directly, may I create two different Krb5LoginModule instances, one for each domain that might authenticate the incoming user?
    thanks in advance,

For #2, let's assume this's within the scope of a Subject.doAs(...) to configure the security context.

Assuming you are not trying to join an Active Directory with Open Directory, and assuming you are in advanced mode:
The prevalent reason for Kerberos not working is faulty DNS. Specifically you need to have DNS setup correctly with forward and reverse addressing.
In Terminal use changeip to verify your hostname is setup.
Additionally I use Network Utility to verify I can lookup the host name and the server's IP address and receive the correct record data.

  • Initial Setup - DNS Question

I set up my mac mini server in a school setting that already has a windows server. I went in and added DNS records for the new mac server. Do I still need to start the DNS service on the mac server? I opened the terminal and did sudo changeip checkhostname and it said everything was working fine.

Yes I have a DNS server and before I setup the mac server I set up foward and reverse DNS entries on it for the mac server.
In all likelihood, your DNS configuration is in error.
So I guess my question is do I need to run the DNS service off the mac server if I intend to run the podcast and ical services?
    Absolutely not.
After I set those services up I and restart the server I get a knetworkerror when I open serveradmin and the computer starts to crawl. Is that because I did not setup the DNS service on the mac or is it a different issue?
That usually means your DNS is in error.
Again, +you need correct DNS services for your server (and from your clients), but you do not need to run those DNS services on the Mac server.+
Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server are both perfectly willing and able to reference and to use DNS services running on Windows, Linux, HP-UX, Plan9, OpenVMS, Solaris, FreeBSD, Tru64 Unix or pretty much any other OS that can run a DNS server, so long as those DNS services are correctly configured.
Specifically for this case (and assuming you're running Server Admin on a client box and not directly on your new Mac OS X Server), you also need correct DNS services available from your client when you are running various services including Server Admin, and if your client is not correctly referencing your LAN DNS, then it is distinctly possible that your server is a bystander here.
From your client and from your server, launch Terminal.app and issue the following commands:
    dig yourservername.example.com
    dig -x your.server.ip.address
    and post the results.

  • Use of changeip

    Hi there
I am switching ISP soon so the external servers need an IP address change which of course is done with the CLI changeip. I have also decided to reconfigure the LAN, moving away from 192.168.1.x to avoid clashes with other networks through VPN connections. Assume I also use changeip for this. Rather obvious question I guess, just don't want to muck up the IP changeover at the time.
    Thanks in advance.
    Cheers, Paul

Google can often be your friend here. Google for +site:discussions.apple.com changeip+ or such -- the Google site: keyword is a very useful feature for targeting your query. There have been some changeip discussions here, as changing an IP host address is a fairly common task, as Mac OS X Server management goes.
The manuals can be your friend, too. There's also a section in the [Leopard Command Line Administration manual|http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/CommandLine_Adminv10.5.pdf] containing a changeip sequence around page 68. This covers some details.
The manual goes into some detail on the specific sequence for changeip, and it's the canonical source for this and many other command sequences, and for related considerations (the sort of ancillary details that tend to get missed in forum discussions) such as the potential need for DNS changes.
And if you don't have a full disk utility disk copy or other such archive handy, having that in place might be a good idea before you wade into any sort of serious system reconfiguration. That'll allow you to recover from errors, in the (very) unlikely event something fails.
Might want to get a static IP and a DNS entry from your provider, too, as it looks like you might have a dynamic DHCP address here.

  • Changeip -checkhostname

    Hi !
I have an Apple Intel Xserve running 10.4.11
It is a fileserver but is also running its own DNS
I am seeing the following in the logs
Feb 2 09:07:30 fileserver servermgrd: servermgr_dns: gethostbyaddr() and reverse DNS name do not match (fileserver != fileserver.company.org.uk), various services may not function properly - use changeip to repair and/or correct DNS
    However if run
    changeip -checkhostname
    dig -x 192.168.2.11
    dig fileserver.company.org.uk
    (see below)
All the responses - appear to be correct -
So how can I stop these error messages without amending /etc/hostconfig which I believe you are not supposed to do.

Unless i'm missing something - all you need to do it correct the DNS server so that the forward and reverse records match the name of your server.

  • Questions on Print Quote report

    Hi,
I'm fairly new to Oracle Quoting and trying to get familiar with it. I have a few questions and would appreciate if anyone answers them
    1) We have a requirement to customize the Print Quote report. I searched these forums and found that this report can be defined either as a XML Publisher report or an Oracle Reports report depending on a profile option. Can you please let me know what the name of the profile option is?
    2) When I select the 'Print Quote' option from the Actions drop down in the quoting page and click Submit I get the report printed and see the following URL in my browser.

  • Satellite P300D-10v - Question about warranty

    HI EVERYBODY
I have these overheating problems with my laptop Satellite P300D-10v.
I did everything I could do to fix it without any success..
I get the latest update of the bios from Toshiba. I cleaned my lap with compressed air first and then disassembled it all and cleaned it better.(it was really clean insight though...)
BUT unfortunately the problem still exists...
So i made a research on the internet and I found out that most of Toshiba owners have the same exactly problem with their laptop.
Well i guess this is a Toshiba bug for many years now.
Its a really nice lap, cool sound (the best in laptop ever) BUT......
So I wanted to make a question. As i am still under warranty, can i return this laptop and get my money back or change it with a different one????
If any body knows PLS let me know.
    chears
    Thanks in advance

    Hi
I have already found you other threads.
    Regarding the warranty question;
If there is something wrong with the hardware then the ASP in your country should be able to help you.
The warranty should cover every reparation or replacement.
But I read that you have disasembled the laptop at your own hand... hmmm if you have disasembled the notebook then your warrany is not valid anymore :(
I think this should be clear for you that you can lose the warrany if you disasemble the laptop!
By the way: you have to speak with the notebook dealer where you have purchased this notebook if you want to return the notebook
The Toshiba ASP can repair and fix the notebook but you will not get money from ASP.

i was messing around and came up with this. it doesnt remove the null, but if it is null it adds ABC beside it. so i think i might be getting close. i just need to figure out how to replace the null.
    code]
    <b><%=request.getParameter("steptwoFour") %></b>
         <% if (request.getParameter("steptwoFour") == null ) {
         %>
         <% out.print("abc"); %>
         <% }

  • Anyone know how to remove Overdrive books from my iphone that have been transferred from my computer? They do not show up on itunes. I see a lot of answers to this question but they all are based on being able to see the books in iTunes.

How do I remove Overdrive books from the library that were downloaded onto my computer then transferred to my iphone? The problem is that they do not show up in iTunes.
I see this question asked a lot when I google, but they always give answers that assumes you can find the books in iTunes either under the books tab, or the audio books tab or in the music. They do not show up anywhere for me. They do not remove from the app like the ones I downloaded directly onto my iphone.the related archived article does not answer it either.  I even asked a guy working at an apple store and he could not help either.   Anybody...?
    Thanks!

there is an app called daisydisk on mac app store which will help you see exactly where the memory is focused and consumed try using that app and see which folders are using more memory

  • Basic question

Hello, i have a basic question. if i have defined 2 fields in a cube or a dso:
    Name Quantity
and from the external flat file i get some characters for my quantity field. would my load fail?  for standard dso and for write optimized?
NOTE: quantity field is a keyfigure defined as numeric.
and the load coming in has "VIKPATEL" for Quantity field and not numbers.
    thanks

    Hi Vik,
    Yes, the load will fail.
May be you coud first load this data into BW (into PSA) and set both fields as characters fields. Then you can create DSO, do transformation from this PSA to the DSO, and put your logic as to what do you want to do with those Quantity that is not number (e.g. convert to 0, or 'Not assgined', etc).
You can use transfer rule, or a clean up ABAP code in the start routine.
    Hope this helps.

  • Mid 2010 15" i5 Battery Calibration Questions

    Hi, I have a mid 2010 15" MacBook Pro 2.4GHz i5.
Question 1: I didn't calibrate my battery when I first got my MacBook Pro (it didn't say in the manual that I had to). I've had it for about a month and am doing a calibration today, is that okay? I hope I haven't damaged my battery? The calibration is only to help the battery meter provide an accurate reading of how much life it has remaining, right?
Question 2: After reading Apple's calibration guide, I decided to set the MacBook Pro to never go to sleep (in Energy Saver System Preference) and leave it on overnight so it would run out of power and go to sleep, then I'd leave it in that state for at least 5 hours before charging it. When I woke up, the light on the front wasn't illuminated. It usually pulsates when in Sleep. Expectedly, it wouldn't wake when pressing buttons on the keyboard. So, what's happened? Is this Safe Sleep? I didn't see any "Your Mac is on reserve battery and will shut down" dialogues or anything similar, as I was asleep! I've left it in this state while I'm at work and will charge it this afternoon. Was my described method okay for calibration or should I have done something different?
Question 3: Does it matter how quickly you drain your battery when doing a calibration? i.e is it okay to drain it quickly (by running HD video, Photo Booth with effects etc) or slowly (by leaving it idle or running light apps)?
    Thanks.

    Fresh J:
A1. You're fine calibrating the battery now. You might have gotten more accurate readings during the first month if you'd done it sooner, but no harm has been done.
A2. Your machine has NOT shut down; it has done exactly what it was supposed to do. When the power became critically low, it first wrote the contents of RAM to the hard drive, then went to sleep. When the battery was completely drained some time later, the MBP went into hibernation and the slepp light stopped pulsing and turned off. In that state the machine was using no power at all, but the contents of your RAM were still saved. Once the AC adapter was connected, a press of the power button would cause those contents to be reloaded, and the machine would pick up again exactly where you left off. It is not necessary to wait for the battery to be fully charged before using the machine on AC power, but do leave the AC adapter connected for at least two hours after the battery is fully charged. Nothing that you say you've done was wrong, and nothing that you say has happened was wrong.
A3. No, it does not matter.

  • Jabber/WebEx Connect SSO Questions

I've got a few questions around exactly what needs to be done to get SAML working for our Connect accounts to successfully authenticate from Jabber for Windows, Mac, iPhone, and Android.
We have both a Meeting Center and Connect account under WebEx using Loose Coupled Integration. Just this past week I enabled SAML for our Meeting Center accounts which went off without a hitch with the exception of Meeting Center integration with Jabber, which is now broken with a message about SSO enabled Meeting Sites not being supported (I think this would maybe be fixed if we had Tight Coupled Integration with our two account?).
    Anyway, my questions are...
For Windows, I understand all clients will need to be reinstalled with the MSI argument for the SSO_ORG_DOMAIN switch I've read about, is that correct? Are there any other switches needed for the reinstall?
How will this work with the Mac and mobile clients? There's obviously no command line options to specify for the installations here, will they just know to kick over to my IdP for authentication once they see an email address that falls under an org with SSO enabled? If so, why does the Windows client need to be completely reinstalled and not just know to find the IdP from the Cloud Connect service like Meeting Center does with the Productivity Tools?
We're just doing this for our Connect Web IM accounts, not attempting any sort of SSO with the phone accounts/UC integration yet.
Any ideas on getting the Meeting Center integration into Jabber working again?

I'd suggest posting your question over on the Jabber Pilot forum, as this forum is specific to Jabber Guest questions:
