Changes to paragraph formats aren't affecting anything at all

Hello:
The recent post by Dennis ("phiguru"?) touched on my problem, but mine is simpler.
I foolishly changed an entire topic's text to red to remind myself that wholesale content revisions are needed, and that the old "boilerplate" is not for publication. (I was in a hurry and have since remembered Conditional tags, of course. Duh.)
Now, I am trying to restore the affected paragraph formats back to their original font colors. (Fortunately, my dopey first color change seems not to have affected the same paragraph formats in other topics.)
These images looked terrible when I first posted this a moment ago, thank goodness clicking on them opens a larger, clearer version!
Using the pencil-icon Edit tool in the Styles and Formatting pod, I'm simply trying to change the color of the font. Seems pretty straightforward, but just in case:
The line "Tiled Texture Mapping..." is one of the Heading 3 culprits that refuses to change. I change the color to Black, turn on Underlining, hit OK and, get Nothing.
I don't expect anything really 20th-century to happen, like the change being applied universally, but when typing on a new blank line that has been designated Heading 3, the new text is still red.
Going to an existing reddened Heading 3 line, and re-selecting the desired style from the Apply Style dropdown at top left only gets me that same maddening business cited by Dennis:
Do you want to:
  1. Update the shyle to reflect recent changes?
  2. Reapply the formatting of the style to the selection?
Any advice, anyone? I know I'm probably missing something obvious, but it continues to escape me, and time, life and my work queue are marching ever-forward.
Thanks.

Hi, Rick:
I seem to have gotten it finally by changing the color  in the Styles dialog, Format button (at lower left) > Font dropdown selection, instead of relying on the formatting controls right under the Paragraph Preview in the Styles dialog. I don’t know why RH takes the former more seriously than the latter.
Then, clicking “Reapply the formatting of the style to the selection?” in the Update/Reapply Style dialog instead of “Update the style to reflect recent changes?” seemed to really nail it down.
Now mind you, I’m not a complete bonehead. I did originally think that “recent changes” referred specifically to changes made wholesale, on the fly and with insufficient forethought, as with my ill-considered changing of all the text to red as a mnemonic device.
But then when I was trying to change things back “the right way”, I started to think that “recent changes” referred to recent ‘proper’ changes in the Styles and Formatting facility, especially since “Reapply the formatting of the style to the selection?” initially seemed so useless.
I did glance at ‘Remove Attribute’ but when it didn’t seem to hold the promise of immediate complete self-actualization and instantaneous transport to a land of dancing unicorns, infinite free energy and no starvation, I lost interest and moved on in my search for fixes.
I think I’ll try your suggestion first next time.
Thanks.

  • How do I change the paragraph format of paragraphs that comes before a list of bullets in one shot

I receive word documents to convert to indesign files based on a template. I have a set of find and replace queries that do most of the work.
The manual work I am doing is as follows:
Changing the paragraph style of all body copy that comes before before bullets
Changing the paragraph style of last bullets and last subbullets
What is the simplest way of changing the paragraph styles of every body copy before a list of bullets.
I am doing more and more of these on a daily basis and would REALLY appreciate some insight.
Not sure if this can only be done in a script.
    Hope that made sense.
    Thanks.

Have you considered following lists with a "paragraph after list" style, like your paragraph before list style? This might be more appropriate for authors to apply while they create content. The idea is that all list items use a single style, so that rearranging items within the list doesn't require retagging the first or last list paragraph to adjust space or numbering when the first or last item is moved into the list.
If this is a common problem in your work, you might want to post a feature request for smarter paragraph styles that can detect whether they're first, last, or interior list items, and adjust their properties as appropriate to their position. You can post your request here: wish

  • How to delete paragraph marks (returns) without affecting spacing, like at the top of the next page

if you have a large document and you add two returns at the end of every major section or group but one of the two returns goes to next page, how do you keep that return so it doesn't mess up spacing if something is added earlier in document but get rid
of it so the top of the page is the same as the other pages? I was wondering if there was something like a hidden return that would hide the paragraph at the top of the page but if more information was added before it, it would act like a regular return. Hope
    this makes sense.
Also do you know what the paragraph maker with a dotted box around it is? I was trying to solve the above problem by trying different keys with the return key, e.g. control + return gives you a page break, shift + return gives you a soft return,
control + alt + return gives you this funky paragraph symbol that seems to erase lines in front of it at least it did when I printed out a page using them.

Thank you! I've never used Styles but have used the formatting. I just didn't want to have to go to the bottom of every page and change the paragraph formatting but format painter helped a lot. Thanks again.
You could also use a heading style for the start of your next major block of text which is formatted to have a page break before. Styles are at the heart of Word formatting. Take the time to learn about them to save a lot of time and hair pulling.

  • Table where Sap-Script Paragraph formats are stored

    hey ABAP,
does anyone know the table where the Paragraph formats are stored?
Problem: we have a Form with 740 Paragraph formats, they all are of font-type courier, and now need to be either blank or Helve.
and well i simply dont want to change 740 paragraph formats manually.
    thx for any ideas, hints

arrrgh ok i´m trying to clarify my situation.
I already know how to create and edit paragraph formats in SE71.
Those 740 Paragraph formats have been created by myself.
But now i need to make a change of the Font type to all of them.
you sureley can imagine that i dont want to edit 740 paragraph formats manually piece by piece.
thats why i was asking for a table where they are stored, so i can write a small report which changes that one field for me in ALL my pareagraph formats.

  • Problem in creating new/changing paragraph format in sapscript

    hi,
i am developing new sapscript form
    based on standard sapscript : SD_PICK_SINGLE .
The problem is that I neither can't create new paragraph format in se71
for this form nor change an exist paragrapf format .
does anyone encountered such a problem
and can help me solve it ?
    ami

    Hi,
You have copied the Standard Sapscript, but i think you have not converted the Original Language "DE", as the standard one will be in "DE", so it is not allowing you to create new paragraph format or any changes.
Open the copied Zform in DE language, Click on Menu> Utilities> Convert original language,
          Give From = DE
                  To    = EN
Save and Open the Same Zform in EN language and do any modification.

    Hi Michele,
Select the paragraphs where you want to change the spacing.
Format Panel > Text > Spacing
You can change 1.0 - Single to something else, or type a number in Before or After.

  • Changing Paragraph format mid-sentence

    Hi Dev's,
Can anyone tell if it is possible to change paragraph format (or more specifically, font size for a paragraph format) mid sentence/mid line, and if so, how?
I have assigned a paragraph format for the MAIN data, of type Courier 8pt.  In my footer, I want to display a text literal 'Total' of Courier 10pt, but have the totals in the rest of the line the same size as the data in the MAIN window (8 pt).
The SAPScript for this totals line looks like this:
    ,,<B>Total:</>,,&G_TOT_TRANS(R)&,,&G_TOT_TAX&,,&G_TOT_NET&
where to display the variables G_TOT_TRANS, G_TOT_TAX and G_TOT_NET on this line only as 8pt.
Points awarded for successful for solution.

<b>Character formats, as opposed to paragraph attributes, allow you to format entire blocks of text within a paragraph.

  • New Pages is double spacing after enter again- can't find the area in inspector that allows you to change paragraph format...help?

New Pages is double spacing after enter again- can't find the area in inspector that allows you to change paragraph format...help?

The "new" Pages is missing just about everything.
Your best best is to go back to the old Pages (mavericks puts in in your applications folder in IWorks.
Apple told me that based on input from users they will add back some missing features back but I suspect that will take a long time if ever.
They (Apple) say they created a new Pages to make it work seamlessly on various devices.
But in doing so they've dumbed down the programs to where they're nearly useless.
Any new users who don't know what "old" Pages could do will probably be satisfied.
But those of us who use this program to do real publishing should send feed back to Apple.
Apple has decided that we are "heavy" users and not representative of the majority of their customers.
That's why I suspect that putting back the features in Pages will not be top priority.
But just in case they really do read the feedback send them your opinions and feature requirements and just maybe if enough people squawk they'll at least put the old Pages back in the App Store (it's gone now).
One possibility crossed my mind. If the new OS Yosemite can mirror devices, perhaps we'll be able to mirror the old pages on to our IOS devices than you could have the full capability of Pages and the connivence of an IPad or IPhone.
    Wouldn't that be awesome?
At least in the presentation, it looked like it could work, we'll see.

  • Undoing Paragraph Formatting

I may just be missing something simple here, but I'm not having any luck undoing (via FlowOperation.undo()) any paragraph formatting. This is using the TLF that comes with Flex SDK 4.0.0.5489.
I'm applying all my FlowOperations via the EditManager, for example using editManager.applyLeafFormat() to apply bold/italic/fonts etc, and calling undo() on these works fine.
However when I use applyFormat/applyFormatToElement() and specify not a leaf format, but a paragraph format (for example when applying a leftMargin to a ParagraphElement), I get a FlowOperationEvent dispatched, and an addition to the UndoManager's stack, but calling undo() has no effect on the TextFlow leaving me with the modified paragraph(s) but no way to undo.
Does anyone know why these Paragraph formatting operations would be one-way only?
I'm also thinking this could be something to do with the SelectionState, it's not very clear how/why you need to specify a SelectionState when calling applyFormatToElement() given you are providing the Element you would like to apply it to. Can anyone describe the role of the SelectionState in this case and perhaps whether this could be affecting the undo?
Just to provide some extra info, I am generally applying my ParagraphFormat-ing via CompositeOperations and I'm using a combination of element.getAbsoluteStart() and element.textLength to get my SelectionState when applying paragraph formats to certain elements that are *not* the current selectionState as defined by the EditManager.

    Hi Robin,
Thanks for your help on this... OK in my code I'm not using any direct calls to change the TextFlow so hopefully undo doesn't get disabled, I'm either using:
      EditManager.applyXXXXFormat(format...);
...or where I'm modifying several elements, e.g. "align the selected paragraphs"...
      EditManager.doOperation(aCompositeOperation);
I'm listening to FLOW_OPERATION_END and storing a reference to the operation that has been performed so that I can later undo it. This is either a format operation or a composite operation depending on what was done. In each case the "generation" increases by 1 after each operation as expected.
I've tried performing the undo via:
      1. EditManger.undo();
      2. theOperation.undo();   (followed by an updateAllContainers())
For method 1, I see another FLOW_OPERATION_END event, and the "generation" decreases by 1, returning back to what it was as you describe*.
For method 2 I don't see the complete event, and therefore I'm not sure what generation I'm looking at, but*...
*In both methods 1, and 2 I see no visual change after the undo, the alignment never reverts back to before the original operation.
If it helps, here are my traces when applying a VerticalAlign.MIDDLE to the TextFlow via applyFormatToElement():
      Generation before: 46
      Calling editManager.applyFormatToElement(editManager.textFlow, format);
      FLOW_OPERATION_END: event.operation = [object ApplyFormatToElementOperation]
      Generation after: 107
      EditManager.undoManager.canUndo() = false
      FLOW_OPERATION_END: event.operation = [object UndoOperation]
      Generation after: 46
      EditManager.undoManager.canUndo() = false
I think the most striking thing here is clearly it says there is no undo available in the UndoManager. So somehow something is disabling it, but there's so little code I can't see where that happens.
I'm not totally sure I understand your advice to try the direct manipulation in order to get the undo working, should I do that as well as the EditManager approach, if so, before or after doing it via EditManager?
    Thanks again,
    Richard

  • For SAPscript INCLUDE TEXT, how to align as Paragraph format

    Hi experts and ABAP colleagues!
Need your help on this sapscript problem:
How to align texts taken from "INCLUDE TEXT" in SAPscript, according to tab defined in Paragraph Format?
For example, I defined BG to have tabstop at the 2nd column (or equivalent to 1st tab position) where I need to print the text, and then declared it in SE71 like below:
However the text prints at the leftmost instead of at the 2nd col position - (8th char tab defined in par. format BG).  Hence it is not aligned to its proper heading.  Line Number instead of Description - which is not okay for client view that needs these Thai texts.
The technical details I included below.  Kindly examine:
1.)  Window >Main > Text Element > Include Text command
    /E   ITEM_TEXT
    BG   ,,&TTXIT-TDTEXT&
    /:   INCLUDE &T166P-TXNAM& OBJECT &T166P-TDOBJECT& ID &T166P-TDID&
    /:   NEW-PARAGRAPH BG
Note:  I used command "NEW-PARAGRAPH" and had exactly the above code in se71.  Anything missed here?  Pls. help.  Thanks.
    #2.) Paragraph Format > Tab
    No. -
      Tab Position -
    Alignment
    1            8,00 CH            LEFT
    2            28,00 CH          CENTER
    etc.
Note:   and then i put in  ",,&TTXIT-TDTEXT&" (see above) with the 2 comma's beforehand to say that its on the 1st tab or at the 8th character where it should be printed, but does not give intended result... pls help.
#3.) Paragraph Formats > Standard Attributes
    Left Margin - 0 cm
    Alignment - Left
no blank lines checkbox - ticked
Note:  Is there any more attribute i can manipulate from here to force display at the right position?
Thank you so much in advance for all your help.  Our project team will really appreciate it.  May the Lord bless you as we go through our SAP work!
    Sincerely,
    Celeste

Here's a thought, instead of using tabs, try writing a method that takes a string that is the starting string, a pad character, and a length and returns a string padded to that length with the specified character.
public String padR(String src, String padChar, int len)
// ... You get to fill in the rest suggestion try to do it without a loop
    }Have fun,

  • How do I change the number formatting within a Cell Table in Microsoft Word?

Hi, I was wondering if someone could help me out on an issue I've been having... I work for an accounting firm and we do a lot of financial statements.
I was wondering if we would be able to treat a cell table in Microsoft Word 2007 like I would a cell table in Microsoft Excel. Meaning, I would like to change the formatting of the numbers in the table to the "Accounting" (number) format so it
aligns by the decimal point and use the $ signs and () for negative numbers.  We do use the link tables feature, however, most of our balancing pages just can't be done in Excel because of the way the text is written. It would be much harder to format
the text if it were to be typed in Excel. We have also tried  creating an Excel sheet within Microsoft Word but it is the same as linking the tables... Again, a text formatting issue.  The only option is to use tables within Word but how do we change
the number formatting to a "accounting" (number) format where the numbers would align with the decimal point and use () for the negative numbers. Is there ANY option for us to do this other than manually entering this information in using tabs?
If there are no options other than entering it in manually, please consider this as an option for your next software update. I believe that a LOT of people out there will be interested in this feature... My manager and I just attended a webinar on Microsoft
Advanced Word Tips Tricks and Techniques and 75% of the attending people had this question but no answer.
Thank you very much for your help!!!!!

Word does not really have number formatting for table cells. You can align cell contents on the decimal point, though, by setting a so-called decimal tab stop.
    Option 1:
    - Select the cells for which you want to do this.
    - Display the ruler.
    - Click the Tab box on the left hand side of the ruler until the box contains an inverted T with a dot.
    - Click in the ruler where you want the decimal tab.
    Option 2:
    - Select the cells for which you want to do this.
    - Click the arrow in the lower right corner of the Paragraph group on the Home tab of the ribbon.
    - Click the Tabs... button in the lower left corner of the dialog.
    - Specify a tab position in the box, e.g. 1.5".
    - Select the 'Decimal' radio button under 'Alignment'.
    - Click Set.
    - Click OK.
You will have to type the numbers as they should appear, including the $ for currency and the ( ) for negative numbers.

  • Changing cross-reference formats - what do my options mean?

Hi all, using TCS2 on Win 7 64 bit.

For more information, please see "Appendix 1".
I want to change this to that it doesn't show quotation marks anymore. I know the HOW of doing this, my question is once I have made the change, a dialogue box appears asking me which cross-references this change should apply to. My options are:
    Internal Cross-References
    References to All Open Documents
    References to All Documents
I don't know which one I should chose. I am working in a book structure that has a bunch of FM files imported to form chapters. Each file file uses this old style xref so I need to update the xref format in each file (I think I need to do this one by one) and in some instances my xrefs are within the same doc, sometimes they are to other files within the FM book. So I think I need to pick 'References to All Documents' but it says there is no undo so I'm seeking advice first!
    Many thanks in advance,

Internal means only within the current document. All open, and all, are self-explanatory.
Your question shows that you're not sure what will happen when all instances of the cross-references that use the format are changed, either because you can't remember what you created in your own book, or because you're working on a book created by someone else, or that you collaborate on with others.
Don't let "no undo" scare you off. You can undo the result by saving all the files, before you do the changes. From within the book window, hold Shift while clicking the File menu - Save changes to Save All Files in Book. Or, from within any open file, hold Shift while clicking the File menu - Save changes to Save All Open Files. After you save the files, performing any non-undoable operation like changing the cross-reference format only makes the changes, but doesn't save the affected files. These actions are undoable by holding Shift while clicking the File menu again; from within a book window, Close becomes Close All Files in Book, and from with an open file, Close becomes Close all open files. When prompted to save, click Don't Save. Alternatively, from within each open and changed file, File > Revert prompts for confirmation, and if you choose to continue, the last-saved version of the file reopens.
If you want yet another safety layer, copy the whole file structure that will be affected to a safe location. If the set of assets is sprinkled all around the system, Bruce Foster's inexpensive FM plug-in "archive" will copy the whole collection into one place: http://home.comcast.net/~bruce.foster/products.htm.

  • TAB in paragraph format for Script

    hi,
i am doubt with the tabs for paragraph format in the script. how actually it work? i try to make change on the tab, but some time even i put a larger value, the space in the output will become smaller, can anyone explain to me how the tab actually work?
    thanks

    Thanks you very much.
but one more question, let say, if i have 3 tabs for an output.
    HARLO,,MY,,WORLD,,!
any i configure the tabs as, 20, 30,15 all in CH
so after the "HARLO, it will have 20 CH of spacing, follow by "MY", 30 spacing, and 'MY" 15 spacing, end with "!"?
it this the way it works?
or it works in accumulate way, which include the text display as well?
i found in the forum, say that, it will fix the length of a field( if i display a field), even there is no any value in that field. so how does it work on this?
alot of question very thansk for the temper.

  • Replace a paragraph format with another in the every page

I am doing some cleanup before exporting and I don't know much about FrameMaker....
I want to replace the paragraph format ABC with XYZ in every page, how would I do this?
I  also have a paragraph format I want to delete and make it just a Normal paragraph  in every page, I image it will be the same process as 1?
    Your help is appreciated

    Try this …
make a back-up just in case
find a paragraph with the style you want to apply (XYZ, in your example)
select Edit > Copy special > Paragraph formatthis copies the format to the clipboard
    open the Find/Change dialogue
put the cursor in a paragraph using the format you want to replace (ABC in your example) and select Paragraph tag from the Find pulldownif you're in luck, FM may well read the current format from the cursor position; if not, type it in
select By pasting from the the Change pulldown
click [Change] to see whether the result is what you expect
click [Change all] once you're feeling confident
Use the same technique to replace all occurrences of the style you want to delete (PQR, f'r instance) with another style, then delete PQR using the paragraph designer

  • Multiple character formats in a paragraph format

Hi. I've searched the general discussion and did not find this issue.
I have one paragraph format called Bomb that consists of a Wingding character (M) in the Numbering tab that prints a little black bomb in a side head. I combine with format with two other paragraph formats called Caution and Warning. These formats are in column and use a red, bold autonumber (CAUTION, WARNING) followed by a couple of spaces--the text goes immediately after the spaces.
My bosses now want the bomb symbol and the CAUTION/WARNING word in the side head, with the text in column. I can't see how to combine that Wingding character with the regular Verdana word. I had to do something similar with my Note format, except that I put the word "note" by itself as a side head and created a format to follow it called NoteAft for the text. This way, I have a line with the Note format, followed by a paragraph return, then the NoteAft format for the text.
I'd rather not have to use three formats to replace the existing two for Caution/Warning, so I hope y'all can help me figure out how to handle this thing.
I appreciate your suggestions! BTW, I'm using FM 7.2 but will want to switch over to 9.0 when my bosses agree.
    Dimi Everette

OK, I managed to answer my own question!
Bomb para format: tab at 0.2 cm (not sure that's required...), Next Para tag is CAUTION; default font is Verdana; Run-In Head with no default punctuation; Numbering tab has Autonumber format checked, M in text field with Wingdings char format; defaults for Advanced and Table Cell tabs.
I press Return and CAUTION appears.
CAUTION para format: no tabs, Next Para is NoteAft; default font is Verdana; Side Head--Alignment: First Baseline; Numbering tab has Autonumber format checked, CAUTION in text field with RedBold char format; defaults for Advanced and Table Cell tabs.
I press Return and type the text of the CAUTION in the NoteAft style.
I'm going to change that Para tag to BombCaution and create another para tag with for BombWarning and be set! Of course this won't work unless your master page uses a column with room for side heads.
If you know of something more elegant, please pass it along.
    Dimi
