Changing window to floating = true

Where in a program, such as Apple Mail, do you find the setting that governs the floating properties of the windows? I know from the dictionary that it is boolean in nature. I have searched for hours, both on the web and in the computer for it. I pieced together this script:
launch application "Mail"
tell application "System Events"
tell application "Mail" to activate
keystroke "w" using command down
keystroke "n" using {command down, control down}
end tell
Which I saved as a run only application and changed the icon to the notes icon (off of the Iphone). I then placed it in the dock. When it loads a little notepad pops up that allows me to take notes that sync with my Iphone. Laugh if you will, but this is very useful, because it is much easier (and neater) for me to take notes this way than using stickies (AND it syncs with my Iphone). It actually makes use of Apple Mail (a frustrating and worthless app with IMAP) too!!! It would make it even better if the new note would float above the other windows making it easier to cut and paste into the notepad. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! Cheers!

You need to understand that an application's .plist in the Preferences folder only contains those items that the developer wants to keep track of between runs (preferences, etc), and sometimes information shared between user interface items (bindings). The user interface definitions and application code inside an application package are usually compiled and are not readable as source files.
If an item has properties that are only set programmatically (or are read only as previously mentioned), you will not be able to change them at all, unless you want to reverse engineer the application code.

  • How do you stop the help window from floating to the top?

Is there way to change the help window's behavior so that it acts like a normal window?
It takes so long to set up seeing the problem and the help at the same time, then go back to reading and then back again.
The floating to the top is a very unwellcome "Feature" and microsoft-like not Apple-like.

That depends on your POV. Some may prefer the default behaviour, because it doesn't allow the help window to be hidden by the working window.
Also, keep in mind that you can use the Minimise (yellow) button in the window's title bar.
However, if you really want to change the default floating window, there is a preference you can change with the defaults command:
$ defaults write com.apple.helpviewer NormalWindow -bool true
Alternatively, you can enable Help Viewer's developer mode
$ defaults write com.apple.helpviewer DevMode -bool true

  • I get error messages frequently when changing windows or starting firefox

this is the fourth time i'm trying to contact you guys. i keep getting error messages when i changed windows saying oops this is embarassing... etc. try again button works sometimes, sometimes not, if not have to restart, erases my bookmark menu tabs which i LOVE, and sometimes they come back. i love you guys so much more than internet explorer, but i have had to use internet explorer now almost all the time because of this problem. also, if you could make it so that one can delete blocks of unwanted email (like click the first unwanted email and the last one and then control/shift like in the old days) that would be AWESOME, but i have found that i can't do this in other applications anymore either so maybe it's something windows operating systems took out as they make new versions, but if you guys could create it in your email site wow, everyone would LOVE YOU!!!!!! so many do already, all my IT guys use you and my friends who are halfway computer literate. i hope you can help me with my problem, also i think i read you partner with clients for their websites to improve/add features. is that true? i'd love to do that if so, i'm using go daddy now, and haven't done half the stuff i want to do on my site. thank you for your positivity and you guys make up for those nasty virus makers who wreck people's lives, businesses,.. using their brilliance to harm people, it so sad. thank you again. i hope this goes through this time. i think i'm going to copy and paste it this time on Word so I can mail it to you if i screw up again!
    thank you again so much!

  • Why is CS6 Zoom change window size is different then previous versions?

Why in CS6 when zoom changes window size and a folating window fits in Photoshop window or on other display screen do I get scroll bars where a select all selection marching ants are not visible on all four sides till I drag out the window to get rid of the scroll bars so I can see all of marching ants.  In preious versions of Photoshop space for scroll bars is present but there are no scrool bar, select all marching ants are visible on all four sides when an image's window fits in Photoshop window or on second display. Is there a way to make CS6 work like previous versions? Also if I just open a document and Photoshop fits it to Photoshop window or second display the floating window is correct without scroll bars. Zoon add then even when not needed....

Without manually resizing each open document window on my Mac, Photoshop 13.x would be simply unusable.
I hadn't posted anything on the subject because the system on which I run Ps 13.0.1 is based on a laptop (MacBook) literally rescued from the trash and with minimal specs.  The graphics card is not even involved in processing.
I put up with it because I'm basically using it to run ACR 7.2RC1, then bring the converted and ACR-adjusted onto my regular working machine running CS4.
In a nutshell, nothing will make the window fit the main monitor, not Fit To Window, nor 100% view, nor any shortcut.
I need to drag the window manually from the lower right-hand corner in order for it to fit the monitor.  Otherwise, there are substantial gaps on the right and at the bottom.  I never run in tab view.
    For the sake of thoroughness:
2007, 2GHz MacBook 2,1, Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB of RAM (can use 3 GB), 160 GB internal boot disk, dedicated FireWire400 external HD for Ps scratch disk, external Time Machine HD.  Dual external monitors + built-in laptop screen Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
The Mac-Intel is used for no other purpose than running ACR 7.2RC1 and the only other application I occasionally run on said Mac-Intel is TextEdit.
My main working machine is a Power Mac (PPC) G5 Quad with 16 GB of RAM, on which 11.0.2 is the last version of Photoshop to run, so I have the Mac-Intel system described above just to run ACR 7.x under Photoshop 13.0.1.  I convert my raw files in ACR7.x open them in Ps 13.0.x and save them via Ethernet to an external HD connected to the G5 Quad for further processing in CS4.

  • How do I adjust text size in toolbar, in tandem with browser text zoom, WITHOUT limiting the screen space of my browser window as a whole? Changing Windows DPI reduces browsability of window as displayed.

I tried to customize PC settings for my mom, whose site is failing. So I plugged in the nosquint Firefox addon and upped the font size. Additionally, I tried to make desktop text etc. (non-browser text) larger. When I accomplished this through the Windows DPI adjustment, the browser would not open to full screen width (at least, not through any means other than F11, which is something beyond my mother's understanding or patience). With DPI 120, the maximized browser will not go full screen, but will instead hold left of screen, and display less than the full width of the page being viewed (this make my mom give up. And who wants to scroll laterally anyways?). Is there some way to pair the functionality of Windows DPI boosts with Firefox text/window zoom? Thanks.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == I changed Windows DPI to >196

See [[Toolbars and page content appear too large after upgrading to Firefox 3]]
Try to adjust the DPI setting, see [http://kb.mozillazine.org/layout.css.dpi layout.css.dpi]
Try to set the pref layout.css.devPixelsPerPx to 2 on the about:config page.
To open the ''about:config'' page, type '''about:config''' in the location (address) bar and press the Enter key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.

  • Media goes offline everytime I change windows?

This is really frustrating, I can't get into editing because every time I change windows (from Premiere, to Bridge, for example) and then change back, it attempts to link files and they go offline. I re-link them and try to get on with it, and it happens again whenever I close the window.
I'm running Premiere Pro CS6 on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, intel core i5-2410m 2.30ghz
Anybody know what the issue might be? I've tried googling it, but not found any satisfactory answer (sorry if it has been answered)
EDIT: I am also using P2 MXF footage which has been imported onto a samsung 1tb harddrive.

Have you tried moving the P2 media to another internal location?

  • What's a simple keyboard shortcut to change windows..?

    Hi everyone,
I'm using a Swiss keyboard and am trying to figure out if there is a simple shortcut for switching Safari windows. I've finally figured out the shortcut for changing tabs (Command-Shift-left or right arrow) but changing windows still eludes me.
    thanks for any help,
    paul

No, it's not the key (nor the method to make the symbol) which makes it work but your mentioning the Keyboard System Preference turned a light bulb on for me. I went through the list of Keyboard Shortcuts in System Preferences and found that Command-< was the shortcut to move focus to next window in active application. Thanks..

  • Claims Digger report - values for changes in duration/float/lags

When I compare two projects using Claims Digger, I always get results for changes in durations, float and lags in hours as opposed to days? Is there a setting that can fix this?
    Please advise.
    Thanks!

I think (not 100% sure) P6 is working as designed.
The basic unit of comparison in P6 is hours and not what is set in user preferences.
For example when you run a global change the basic unit used in calculations is hours.
Also when we enter duration in days, its actually been stored in database in hours and then converted to days using activity calendar in P6v7.

  • Find/Change window freezes - Appleworks 6.2.9

When I use the Appleworks Find/Change window for the first time after booting up my new iMac, the Find/Change window freezes up and then disappears and then the opened document on my desktop disappears from my desktop, too. I have Appleworks 6.2.9 and a new iMac purchased a few months ago. Why does the Find/Change window freeze up and do that? How do I fix this? Thanks for any help!

The most likely cause is corrupt preferences & is easily fixed by deleting the AppleWorks preferences.

  • Cmd + tab to change windows and not application

You might clearly see the former Windows and Unix user in me but using cmd+Tab to switch files (not only application) is a really powerful tool. Expose is not close to be as useful. In fact I can't see what good it might be to switch from an application to another.
Any suggestions on how to have cmd + tab change windows?
I think I saw Adobe Photoshop behave that way.
    Thanks

Hitting ctrl-fn-f4 works well (thanks) but the order of the files does not change depending on usage. something the current cmd-tab does.
Quickly swapping is enjoyable when you can swap back and forth between 2 files.
Also, ctrl-fn-f4 does not work well with Words.
While scrolling, the flow of files stopped after le last Word window.
Pressing ctr-fn-f4 again makes nothing anymore and then it does. I'm don't see the logic of the command.
As for cmd-~ (Kappy), it doesn't appear to do anything. It might be because I have a French keyboard (~ is alt-ç).

  • Change Windows colors in registry

    Hi
Changing Windows colors in registry neither works here
    HKCU/Control Panel/Colors
    nor here
    HKCU/Control Panel/Desktop/Colors
That means for example, that you can change the ActiveBorder color in the usual color dialog box: The registry value does not change in both of the above registry places.
    Or
You can change the ActiveBorder color directly in the registry in both of the above registry places: The Windows ActiveBorder color does not change, even after a reboot.
Obviously the color is saved in a different registry-path.
Where exactly the Windows colors are saved in the registry, when you change them manually?
    Patrick

Windows7 was the last OS to feature full "Advanced Appearance" dialog. For Windows8, developers aggregated these
controls, providing simplified interface with magnification and themes selection. Sadly, this deferred expert users from genuinely customizing system's appearance. I am unsure
about current development stage, but there is hope that upcoming OS will have these
Advanced Settings incorporated into *.themes files; allowing greater customization power than pre-Win7 and enabling
users to create and share their own system Theme Packs (including backgrounds, screensavers, colors, metrics and their dynamics). If we are lucky, release of application and/or metro-app to facilitate creation, editing and management of Theme Packs should
    be in order too.
    At present (Windows10
TechPreview) we only have Control Panel page 'Display', providing multi-screen magnification control and some text formatting.

Have to agree with Noel: after Bill Gates left, Microsoft was pulled towards sales and monetization. (might be one of those
things transcending Cause&Consequence-Relationship, though). Basic research of company's history would reveal some failed/suspended ideologically ambitious
and technologically progressive projects from 20th century - wish they renew some of those.
With general folks mass-entering digital sphere, last decade had a few good years for social media and
googly entertainment; - for serious IT? -not
so much. At the same time, Intel signed some dubious licenses with Apple, effectively preventing them
from developing PC graphic drivers for PowerVR-sgx5 chips. What later on, combined with Metro resolution limitations and UAC enforcement, was very convenient for MS Surfaces' sales. Thankfully,
now Bill Gates is back and Microsoft has "always so good" future goals, again.

  • Find Change window too large and I cannot make it smaller

In Indesign CC the find/change window is continually resizing. This happens when I place a larger block of text into the find or replace field. After a few such changes I end up with a window as wide as my screen. I am able to get rid of it by restarting Indesign and resetting the preferences at restart. This is not a solution. How can this window be reduced in size or better yet set to remain at a fixed size.
I am operating on a Mac with system: 10.10.2
    Thanks
