Character mapping from WE8ISO8859P1 to US7ASCII

We are planning to implement a multilingual web application with an Oracle database with WE8ISO8859P1 or some 8859-X compatible character set to support Western European languages. We will collect name in local languages (coded in WE8ISO8859P1), i.e. German, French, etc. As a requirement, the name information also have to be forward to other application/system that only support English (coded in US7ASCII).
We are looking for a WE8ISO8859P1 to US7ASCII mapping. It is straightly a code to code mapping (128 - 255 to 0 - 127). Has anyone done this before.
Thanks,
Chi

The mapping from WE8ISO8859P1 to US7ASCII is not straight forward, Oracle will try to map each non-ASCII letter to it's base letter. For example the following characters:- @ , A , B and D will all map to the ASCII letter A when going from WE8ISO8859P1 to US7ASCII. You can view all the mapping information via the Oracle Locale Builder under the Tab 'Replacement Characters' for the character set US7ASCII.

We are in 11.5.10.2 Ebusiness suite with 10.2.0.4 RDBMS. thinking to take advantage a downtime to convert the darabase character set from WE8ISO8859P1 to UTF8 right now even we ONLY want to install and configure new language in year or two in the future. I have a lot of questions and hope someone can answer them
1) Is that ok to convert the database character set witout doing anything in the apps side? Not even change any setting in apps?

Hi
Apart from Srini inputs, here is my inputs.
*1) Is that ok to convert the database character set without doing anything in the apps side? Not even change any setting in apps?*
No issues to convert without adding new language in EBS.
*2) I know Oracle is recommend AL32UTF8 for E-business suite.. but for Rel 12 only. Am I have the right information?*
Please note that AL32UTF8 is not certified for Oracle E-Business Suite 11i.

• Using the Alt key and numeric code from Character Map to insert special characters in Office 2010 programs

I am used to using the ALT key and specific numbers for characters from the Character Map to place characters in Office programs like Outlook, Word, Excel. I have a new Lenovo T530 Laptop running the Windows 7 Professional Operating System. I have MS Office
2010 Home and Business. In previous versions of Office, this feature worked first time, every time. On this machine, it is a 'no go' situation. Lenovo tech support says it is a Microsoft issue and Microsoft says it is a Lenovo issue. Either way, I'm having
difficulty resolving the issue and getting this wonderful featrure working for me. Any suggestions and guidance would really be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi,
Haven't been verified this myself, but since this feature require to use the numeric keypad to input the value, I suspect the cause of the issue is the laptop keyboard.
To workaround this issue, try enable the numeric keypad from your laptop keyboard, normally, we can enable it by press
Fn + Num Lock.
After that, try insert characters again.

• Can I take an image created in Illustrator and have it be on the Character Map? I need to use it as

I have an image that I need to use as a bullet many times for a specific client. Is there a way to take that image from Illustrator and convert it to something on the Character Map?

If by Character Map, you mean the Windows Character Map application, which lets you view the glyphs in a given font, then no, you can't do that with Illustrator.
In order for your bullet (a new glyph) to appear in the Windows Character Map application, it would have to be a glyph inside a font.
Illustrator does not provide the capability of directly editing font files. (Corel Draw does.)
So if you want to edit an existing font, or create a new font, you need a program that can edit and/or modify fonts.
In modifying fonts, you would be restricted by the limitations inherent in fonts: your custom bullet or dingbat would need to consist of a single simple or compound path, and could only receive one color, as any other text object.
The far more common approach to this problem is to use inline graphics. All of Illustrator's mainstrream competitors (and even InDesign) allow you to paste a graphic into a textframe, inline with the text, and have it behave as if it were a character in the text. Illustrator has never provided that commonplace feature.
If you use InDesign you can, as a ridiculously cumbersome workaround, create your text object in InDesign, paste the artwork element(s) inline. When done, copy the whole text object and paste into Illustrator. It will be pasted into AI as PDF content, meaning a Clipping Mask containing a bunch of individual pointType objects and the bullets as separate objects.

• PSE 11 character map

Does PSE 11 have a built in character map, and if it does, where can it be found. Also, when you apply text to a photo and then click graphics, then text, is there a way for a person to insert more and different textures that you can click onto to change the design of your text??

Let us get to your Photoshop Elements 11 questions.
Until you get to the Photoshop Elements Forum experts, please consider the following for what I am assuming is Photoshop Elements 11 on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit.
My take on the situation is that Photoshop Elements 11 does not come with a built in Character Map. For the entry of certain symbols you can use Alt key with a numeric keyboard code...for example for ©, Alt + 0169.
However, perhaps a better answer....What computer operating system is your Photoshop Elements 11 running on? Assuming that it is Windows 7 64 bit, then use the Windows 7 Character Map to copy a character and paste it into your Photoshop Elements 11 document. Have you been there and done that? See link for more details, other operating systems.
http://www.7tutorials.com/use-special-characters-windows-7-character-map
Side Note: If your program is Photoshop Elements 11 (photo editor) and not Premiere Elements (video editor), you have posted in the wrong forum.
In this case, please re-post your question in the Adobe Photoshop Elements Forum or wait for a moderator to see your thread here and move it from here to there. In either case, you are dealing with user to user, not Adobe.

• How do I get a five point solid star using character map ?

I can not retrieve a five point solid star from the " character map ". I have tried all the fonts that have a star ,and, when I paste, I get a different character ,but, no star. I tried the system of getting characters using the " ALT KEY " and number pad on the right side of the keyboard, but, here again, when I type in the code for a solid star ( 9733 in the list I retrieved from the internet ) a different character pops up. I have Vista, and use Firefox. I tried using " IE " but still have the same problem. Any suggestions will be much appreciated. Thank you

• Generating unicode for arabic character similar to Character map in c#

Hi,
I need to generate Unicode characters for Arabic character. Similar to character map dialog in windows os.
Example: ﺗ represent 'ﺗ' and ﺮ represent 'ﺮ'
in the character map.
Let me know how to get this similar Unicode from the Arabic string in c#.
Thanks in advance.

Hi SudheendraRao,
I have made a test with the code from Joel, and the 'ﺗ' and 'ﺮ' came out right.
>> if i give string "القائمة" i am expecting "اﻟﻘﺎﺋﻤﺔ" but i am getting Unicode like this "ةمئاقلا".
I am not sure the result of string "القائمة" should be, but if I split the string to one char one by one, I could not get the result which you expected.
Could you share us the some key code about your project? It would be better if you could convert “اﻟﻘﺎﺋﻤﺔ” to string to see if the result was equal with “القائمة”

• How to map from cid to unicode

Hello.

I think that the mapping process needs "beginbfrange" and "endbfrange."
But, the above cmap does not include them.
There should be a way to map from cid to unicode, because the Preview(Mac application) can search the same text.
Please let me know my lack of understanding on toUnicode cmap.

You might want to lookup ToUnicode maps in the standard. ISO 32000-1:2008 says in section 9.10.3 "ToUnicode CMaps":
The CMap defined in the ToUnicode entry of the font dictionary shall follow the syntax for CMaps introduced in 9.7.5, "CMaps" and fully documented in Adobe Technical Note #5014, Adobe CMap and CIDFont Files Specification. Additional guidance regarding the CMap defined in this entry is provided in Adobe Technical Note #5411, ToUnicode Mapping File Tutorial. This CMap differs from an ordinary one in these ways:
The only pertinent entry in the CMap stream dictionary (see Table 120) is UseCMap, which may be used if the CMap is based on another ToUnicode CMap.
The CMap file shall contain begincodespacerange and endcodespacerange operators that are consistent with the encoding that the font uses. In particular, for a simple font, the codespace shall be one byte long.
It shall use the beginbfchar, endbfchar, beginbfrange, and endbfrange operators to define the mapping from character codes to Unicode character sequences expressed in UTF-16BE encoding.

• Unicode Character Map

Hi-ya
I want to craate a unicode character map much like the one in windows. You choose a font and it shows you all the characters.
First of all I would have thought this would exist, either with swing or java but I can't find it. Has anyone seen one in the wild?
Secondly how would the iteration alogrithmn look like?
I found some samples at unicode.org but they seem way oversized for what I want to do. This is the applet from unicode that I am talking about:
http://www.unicode.org/reports/tr15/Normalizer.html
Is there no easy - peasy way to go through all the unicode code points in a font? Like I said either in swt or swing.
thanks.

You haven't seen the Font2DTest demo program?
It doesn't seem to be online but you will find if you look under the demo/jfc/Font2DTest directory of your copy of the java virtual machine.

• Characterset change from WE8ISO8859P1 to AL32UTF8

Hi,
I have restore the rman on new server oracle 11.2.0.3 (Previous backup was of oracle 10.2.0.4).
Then I have successfully upgrade the database to oracle 11g but issue which I am facing right now is that the old database have the character set WE8ISO8859P1 which is now upgraded to oracle 11.2.0.3 database server.
My required character set is AL32UTF32.
Now is there any way that while restoring the rman backup of oracle 10.2.0.4 on new server I set the character set to AL32UTF32.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Kind Regards,

It means that either I have to change it before backup or after perform the full upgrade on new server oracle 11g and then convert the character set. Am I right?Yes, You are right.
I think as you are changing from WE8ISO8859P1 to AL32UTF8, so you do not need any tool.

You will need to follow the steps in MOS Doc 225912.1 (Changing the Database Character Set ( NLS_CHARACTERSET )). This is not a trivial exercise. The easiest way to do the conversion is to export the database, drop the database, recreate it with the new characterset and perform an import. Other solutions will require the support of Oracle Consulting.

• Keyboard characters : "character map" equivalent ?

I have a localized Mac keyboard which doesn't have certain charachters, such as square brackets and the ~ (tilde) symbol.
On a windows machine I can use the character map to get to certain symbols, is there any equivalent in Leopard ?
Thanks, Tom.

I have a localized Mac keyboard which doesn't have certain charachters, such as square brackets and the ~ (tilde) symbol.
They are no doubt there somewhere, accessible via the Option or Option + Shift modifiers. To see where, you use Keyboard Viewer, which you activate by going to system prefs/international/input menu and checking its box (plus the box for "show input menu in Finder") and then selecting it from the "flag" menu at the top right of the Finder.
In the Belgian layout, [] are at Option + Shift () and tilde is at Option + n.

Hi,
I am passing multiple character values from parametr form into

sincerely,

gj / Fedro,
Only using the &referecne, you can pas a string / multiple character values and this would work for query only.
The bind parameter in PL/SQL wouls support only single value
