Characterset change from WE8ISO8859P1 to AL32UTF8

Hi,
I have restore the rman on new server oracle 11.2.0.3 (Previous backup was of oracle 10.2.0.4).
Then I have successfully upgrade the database to oracle 11g but issue which I am facing right now is that the old database have the character set WE8ISO8859P1 which is now upgraded to oracle 11.2.0.3 database server.
My required character set is AL32UTF32.
Now is there any way that while restoring the rman backup of oracle 10.2.0.4 on new server I set the character set to AL32UTF32.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Kind Regards,
Adnan Hamdussalam

It means that either I have to change it before backup or after perform the full upgrade on new server oracle 11g and then convert the character set. Am I right?Yes, You are right.
I think as you are changing from WE8ISO8859P1 to AL32UTF8, so you do not need any tool.
Must read note,

  • Characterset conversion from WE8ISO8859P1 to UTF8

    Hi All,
While running CSSCAN utility from WE8ISO8859P1 to UTF8 after running 8-9H, the process is going to sleep state.
We need to complete this task in next 1week of time. Can any one share why this is happening.
    Thanks,
    Sekhar

There is a Metalink note on [Bug 6460895 - CSSCAN may hang / run slowly|https://metalink.oracle.com/CSP/ui/flash.html#tab=Home(page=Home&id=fm2z4pjj()),(page=KBNavigator&id=fm2z4vd6(&viewingMode=1141&userQuery=csscan%20sleep&searchControl=1146))] that looks to be vaguely related. This indicates that the bug was fixed in 10.2.0.4, but unfortunately the bug itself isn't published, so it is rather hard to know if this is your problem or not. It would probably be worth logging a support request to see if Oracle support can determine whether or not you're being affected by this bug.
Meanwhile, can you apply the 10.2.0.4 patchset and see if that solves the problem?

  • CSSCAN in 11g - Characterset not changing from WE8IMSWIN1252 to AL32UTF8

    All,
We have installed a 11g database in Linux box and once after that we wanted to change the character set to AL32UTF8 from default WE8MSWIN1252.
We took the cs-alter approach and ran cs-scan utility, upon going through csscan.txt files generated by csscan utility we found that there are no lossy data but convertible data was found in data dictionary. Below is the output from csscan.txt
    This is the Scan Summary
    *[Scan Summary]*
All character type data in the data dictionary are convertible to the new character set

You have convertible data in the application tables. CLOB or not, such data prevents csalter.plb from changing the character set.
You are on 11.2.0.3, so use the DMU (http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/products/globalization/dmu/overview/index.html). It can cope with such data.

  • PlsqlNLSLanguage WE8ISO8859P1 vs AL32UTF8

    Hi,
I upgraded to 3.0.1 and I am having some issues with apostrophe when I switch the PlsqlNLSLanguage from WE8ISO8859P1 to AL32UTF8.
I did run the OWAINST script to upgrade Web Toolkit.
So my pages displays correctly except for those apostrophe that shows as little squares.
If I use WE8ISO8859P1 , everything displays and inserts correctly. Why can't I keep this setting for PlsqlNLSLanguage ?
If I use AL32UTF8 , when I insert, the apostrophe shows as reversed questionmarks ( de l¿AQIII ). When I select apostrophe inserted in WE8ISO8859P1 , it shows as little boxes. (de lAQIII )
I am kind of stuck with this.
    Anybody experiencing this behaviour ?
Normal apostrophe works, it's when I cut and paste from Word that it does not inserts correctly.
    I am using APEX 3.0.1
    OWA 10.1.2.0.6
    DB : 10.1.0.5.0
    DB Characterset : WE8ISO8859P1
    Thanks
    Francis.

    Hi Francis,
Thanks for explaining this and thanks for including the information in #4. You have stated precisely your issue.
The fundamental problem is you are attempting to include the MS Word-generated apostophe, in your data. This character is known as RIGHT SINGLE QUOTATION MARK, Unicode character U+2019, AL32UTF8 codepoint E28099. There is no equivalent codepoint in your database character set, WE8ISO8859P1 which can accommodate this character.
Of course, you're going to ask, why wasn't this a problem before? And that's because in HTML DB 1.6 and earlier, when the database character set matched the DAD character set, no character set conversion was attempted. So even though the character couldn't directly be accommodated in WE8ISO8859P1, the bytes were stored as is.
Now, in HTML DB 2.0 and APEX 3.0 and later, the DAD character set must be AL32UTF8. So there will be character set conversion between mod_plsql and your database - on data going into the database and data coming out of the database.
Unfortunately, the DAD character set must be AL32UTF8 in APEX 3.0 - otherwise, you'll run into trouble later - guaranteed. The only viable solution for you, as I see it, is either change your database character set to AL32UTF8 or somehow avoid entering these characters.
    I hope this helps.

You will need to follow the steps in MOS Doc 225912.1 (Changing the Database Character Set ( NLS_CHARACTERSET )). This is not a trivial exercise. The easiest way to do the conversion is to export the database, drop the database, recreate it with the new characterset and perform an import. Other solutions will require the support of Oracle Consulting.

  • Changing Character Set from AL16UTF16 to AL32UTF8

    Hi,
I am stuck with a requirement to change the Character Set from AL16UTF16 to AL32UTF8.
I am trying to install the Oracle Content Database & the installer expects the target database to have a Character Set of AL32UTF8. The current Character Set of the Database is AL16UTF16. I am unable to change the Character set as it simply complains that AL32UTF8 is not a super-set of AL16UTF16.The documents that I have consulted mention that such a transitionis not recommended.
How do I convince the installer to continue the installation with AL16UTF16 ? Or, is it possile at all to change the Character Set from AL16UTF16 to AL32UTF8 ?
Please do let me know your thoughts on this.

  • Change Oracle XE from WE8MSWIN1252 to AL32UTF8

I want to change the character set of Oracle XE 10g on my machine from WE8MSWIN1252 to AL32UTF8. I understand I need to scan, change my NLS_LANG and export and them import into new XE with Universal character set.
I need some more details to these steps if someone can help out.
    My current Oracle XE details:
    NLS_LANGUAGE - AMERICAN
    NLS_TERRITORY - AMERICA
    NLS_CHARACTERSET - WE8MSWIN1252
    I want NLS_CHARACTERSET to be AL32UTF8.
    Thanks,

    Hi everbody,
Really OracleXE dont suport character convertion.
But I get the binary CSSCAN from another Oracle 10g Enterprise and copy to server of XE in $ORACLE_HOME/bin.
With this, I copy also CSALTER.PLB and CSMINST.SQL to ?/rdbms/admin and now, I have the scripts.
So, I run following the "howto" and read .log, .err and .out files generated from log=
If you receive the message "Checking or Converting phrase did not finish successfully", check the .err file and drop the tables listed as "with error". After this, the process run without erros and YES, the database is CHANGED.
I do this and I can afirm: this process works!

  • Unable to migrate table, character set from WE8MSWIN1252 to AL32UTF8

    Hi,
On our source db the character set is AL32UTF8
On our own db, we used the default character set of WE8MSWIN1252 .
When migrating one of the table, we get an error of this: ORA-29275: partial multibyte character
So in to alter our character set from WE8MSWIN1252 to AL32UTF8, we get this error:
    ALTER DATABASE CHARACTER SET AL32UTF8
    ERROR at line 1:
ORA-12712: new character set must be a superset of old character set
I would sure not like to reinstall the db and migrate the tables again. Thanks.

See this related thread - Re: Want to change characterset of DB
You can use the ALTER DATABASE CHARACTER SET command in very few cases. You will most likely have to recreate the database and re-migrate the data.

  • Convert 10.2.0.4 RDBMS from WE8ISO8859P1 to UTF8 without install new langua

We are in 11.5.10.2 Ebusiness suite with 10.2.0.4 RDBMS. thinking to take advantage a downtime to convert the darabase character set from WE8ISO8859P1 to UTF8 right now even we ONLY want to install and configure new language in year or two in the future. I have a lot of questions and hope someone can answer them
    1) Is that ok to convert the database character set witout doing anything in the apps side? Not even change any setting in apps?
    2) I know Oracle is recommned AL32UTF8 for E-business suite.. but for Rel 12 only. Am I have the right information?
    3) I found someone post in one of the Forum in here .. that he use CSSCAN to scan the database but realized it only change the metadata not the user data..... I though CSSCAN is only for scanning to report potential data.. should not change anything in database? I wonder he mean CSaLTER instead.... but only metadata huh??
    4) I also read some people use expdp/impdp to perform the character set conversion... but I also read that oracle recommend to use exp/import utility only. Is that right? What is the better method for character set conversion if both of them are valid path?
    thanks Fushan

    Hi
Apart from Srini inputs, here is my inputs.
*1) Is that ok to convert the database character set without doing anything in the apps side? Not even change any setting in apps?*
No issues to convert without adding new language in EBS.
*2) I know Oracle is recommend AL32UTF8 for E-business suite.. but for Rel 12 only. Am I have the right information?*
Please note that AL32UTF8 is not certified for Oracle E-Business Suite 11i.

  • 8.1.7(WE) needs to go to 10g(UTF8).. need assistance in characterset change

    Folks, Here is the situation:
I have this 8.1.7 db in Western European characterset.
--I need to upgrade this db to 10g (latest version),
--I need to make it UTF in 10g.
Can the characterset change is possible during db upgrade? Or I can do the characterset after the db is upgraded to 10g?
Can anyone shed light on this?
    Thanks in advance.
    regards,
    Lily.

Unfortunately there are some pitfalls, when changing a database characterset from single-byte to unicode, especially if source database is 8i. You should start reading here (Upgrade Guide) and follow the links:

  • Issue on payroll area which is changing from biweekly to monthly in Mid of

    Dear Experts,
I have an issue on payroll area which is changing from biweekly to monthly in Mid of the Month.
One employee was retired on 29th of March, so his payroll area was changed from biweekly to monthly on 29th. For retire we are running the payroll on 8th of every month. When we are running payroll for April he has received only 29th and 30th retire salary, by the time he is not yet retired also.
In this case the main problem is monthly payroll time is early then biweekly. so the employee is getting retire salary then his regular pay.
Can you guide me where we can control that monthly payroll area should not be triggered at this movement.
    Thanks
    Chandra

You can do that but it is not that easy as it sounds if you have to do that over a period of say 10-20 years...lot of operational work!!
Also say if you load the retiree action one month ahead say on 03/01/2011. And the employee is retiring on  03/29.
    Retire payroll is on 04/08
    Biweekly is on 04/15
Now you decide to lock the employees after the 1st biweekly check of March...say which was process 14 days before 04/15 would be 04/01. The employee number is locked between 04/01 to 04/15. For 14 days you have locked these employees!!
What happens if there is adjustment pay...you have to manually go and unlock the employee and lock him after the adjustment check.
I will let you decide based on the comfort, SAP effort, Operational effort and system maintenance.

Hard to say what is happening without examining the file.
