Hi Learned ones,
I am trying to generate a report in pdf format in unix however it errors out with:
REP-0004: Warning: Unable to open user preference file.
REP-1920: Character mode runtime incompatible with DESFORMAT of PDF, HTML, HTMLCSS, or RTF.
Now i generate the same report in windows to pdf format and works fine.
Please help.

You are attempting to run a report with a destination format of PDF, HTML, HTMLCSS,SPREADSHEET or RTF. These formats are only available when running in a bitmap environment and producing a bitmap output.
Action:
Re-run the report with a bitmap executable or set MODE=BITMAP if already running with a bitmap executable.

I have an Oracle Reports Server 6i and Forms Server 6i on the same machine.
Operation system Windows 2000 Server.
I can not run reports with BITMAP mode after runing report in CHARACTER MODE.
1 report: I run report on Forms server using command line:
rwcli60.exe report=report1.rep MODE=CHARCTER DESTYPE=MAIL DESNAME=MyMail BACKGROUND=YES server=REP_SERVER
It works correct.
When I run report by URL:

Report fails with message

Then I restart reports server service and report2 works correct but after runing report1 report2 does not work.
Whats are problem?

You are running into known bug 2460641. It is fixed in the latest patchset, patchset 13. Please give it a try as it should resolve your issue. If it does not, I'd suggest contacting Oracle Support.

How to print report in Character mode using Oracle Developer 10g

I migrate my forms and reports from Oracle Developer 6 to Oracle Developer reports 10g,
We are using some character mode report for bill printing. But when i run these report through menu on Web i got error message like
"REP-1920: Character mode runtime incompatible with DESFORMAT of PDF, HTML, HTMLCSS, SPREADSHEET or RTF"
i don't want to change the character mode to any other mode because it effects the printing.
so how can it possible to set the mode to character and view report on Web.
pls. suggest me solution.

You have to pass the PRT file name as value for the DESFORMAT and use mode= MODE=CHARACTER.
E.g.
http://<host name>:<port>/reports/rwservlet?desformat=dflt&mode=character&.....

9i report character mode printing under Win2000/Solaris 8i

i have developed my application in oracle 9i in windows 2000 environment. i want to print the reports in "character mode" on dot matrix printer.
how to do this ?.
i have given the runtime paratmeter as
Set_Report_Object(repid,Report_other,'mode=CHARACTER')

Save a character mode report to ascii file after previewing?

Question:
why isn't there a way to say generate a character mode report into an ascii file form the Previewer, am I missing somethig?
I know you can choose print and then print to file or choose generate to Postscript file, but it is not as clean as it is with bitmaps that you can preview and then save as: html, pdf, htmlcss, rtf etc.

However, I am even more confused now because once I see my character mode report in the previewer and try to generate into an html file the message is:
rep-1920: Character mode runtime incompatible with desformat of pdf, html, htmlcss or rtf,
There is no such error with bitmap reports so why would it be a problem for the character report since you say it is converted to bitmap?
Other than that, even more important question is using this same report to be displayed on web: since there is no convinient storing in the local users space
in that case.

Reports in Character Mode - Can I generate a PDF?

Hi, i'm working with Forms 6i in Character Mode. Forms and Reports are in Unix Server.
Now, all the forms call the reports like this:
run_product(REPORTS, lower(lv_reporte), SYNCHRONOUS, BATCH, FILESYSTEM, list_id, null);
HOST('sh imprime '||lv_salida||' '||to_char(ln_cantidad)||' '||lv_ccola, NO_SCREEN);
"Sh Imprime" is a JOB, it's redirect the output to the printer.
I need, in character mode, Run the Report to a PDF, ¿It can be possible?
I don't wanna create the .lis, i wanna run the report and generate a PDF.

I can't generate a PDF, but if the form call the report in "BITMAP" mode and non character without archive.prt, i'ts generates a PostScript in UNIX.
Later, I transform the Ps to PDF, with ghostscript PS2PDF.

Character Mode Reports 11g

we are upgrading to 11g, and all our reports are character mode formatted via .prt files, since character mode reports cannot be generated in pdf format, we don`t know how to access the reports, because we have dot matrix printers and the pdf don't work with these printers
Is there a way to run character mode report with preview screen and generate the right format (using the prt files we already have) ?

You actually need 2 reports. See the Report Builder Help:
About creating an ASCII (character-mode) report
To create a character-mode report, you first create a bit-mapped report, then convert that report to an ASCII (character-mode) report. The process will create a new character-mode version of your bit-mapped report; the original bit-mapped report remains unchanged.
There is a step-by-step explanation in the Help.

Reader incompatible with system configuration

Installing Reader Xl has turned all of my icons into Adobe symbols and will not open. Dialog box says that protected mode is incompatible with system configuration but still will not open even if I click to disable proteced mode. I cannot open Adobe Reader either. I use Windows 7

I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times. If my browser gets closed I have to uninstall the program just to open my browser or any other program. I scanned with Kaspersky TDSS Killer and it showed up clean. I have went to the Adobe Properties and tried it on the compatibility pack for windows 7 and also tried it on XP service pack 2. No luck.

Character mode report with 0 KB

There is one more problem , which we are facing now, the character mode reports are now coming with 0kb size, we are using the orarrp.exe for remote printing utility. If same report is generated using desformat as PDF, then it comes.

I think this is new with Reports 6i.

Printing in character mode with MSWIN1250 cp

Hi,
A co-worker of mine has a very annoying problem with a report.
The mission is creating a report which could be run on a matrix printer
(e.g. epson 1170 , DFX-5000 or similar like these) and it must work well
with MSWIN1250 codepage. The main reason we have to do it is that our client uses
a secret salary envelope which contains two pages with carbon paper and we have to
write the salary list on it (I bespoke it's an HR application). This kind of paper needs
some physical pressure to be readable all of two pages. He tried several method or workaround
to solve it, unsuccessfuly. The internal convert function unusable for this, if he convert the
chars before printing the report will be unreadable in the preview but in print seems ok.
Oracle support suggested to set the printer to the appropriate codepage but I we have not
found it (The printer has only PC852 pre-set codepage and the database based on MSWIN1250.).
In graphical mode printing on the matrix printer is correct but very slow.
The character mode is fast enough but unusable in this way.
Any idea or suggestion would be appreciated..

Hi,
First create your .prt file. In this file, you must define the printer escape sequence for making an object print in bold format, for example. Most of the supplied .prt files incorporate this code. An example of a HP printer setting is:
code "1" esc"(s7B"
code "2" esc"(s0B"
Check your printer settings and/or consult your printer manual for more information on other effects, such as italic.
Next build your character mode report.
The report must now be set to the .prt file. Set the DESFORMAT system parameter for your report to test.prt (no need for .prt extension). This can also be set as a runtime parameter.
Next, go to the object in the report that you want to print in bold; such as, boilerplate text. Click on the properties for the boilerplate text, and go to the 'Printer Codes' tab. References to the escape codes shown above must be entered here in the Before and After fields. You are interested in the BOLD On and Off printer escape sequences so we would put &1 in the before and &2 in the after field.
Save and run the report directing the output to a valid printer. The printed version of the character mode report should incorporate your changes.
NOTE: You do not have to use &1, and so forth, Long postings are being truncated to ~1 kB at this time.

Print in character mode with Reports 6i

No matter what I do, when I try to print a report made in character mode the .prt file is not applied, I changed de initial value of desformat to de desired printer configuration, but nothing, I even change de dflt.prt, and made de width larger but it still prints with de default configuration.

actually i faced this problem b4. ok let me give u full procedure that I apply to make my reports be printed in .txt file as i want it.
humm...first of all if u are creating reports using report wizard plz make sure u select Template = "Character Mode"
and if not using report wizard as I don't use he he he..then
ok ...let go...
1. open property palette for report module
- set unit of measurement = Centimeter (it's not that imp but i do)
- now go at last section in that prop. pale. and set "Design In Character Units" = "Yes"
2. in Data Model goto system parameters
- Desformat = "dflt" (it's default)
- desname = "d:\h1.txt" (or whtever u like it;'s use full while development)
- destype = "File" (so u will get your report directly into the file specified at desname)
- mode = "Character" (obviously..he he he)
ok now step 3
3. layout model
-> main Section
- humm now let say u want your report to be 150 char in width
so just see there u will find width = 21.59 and in char mode (down in that prop.
pale.) report width = 80
so it's very simple maths 150 char => 40.48125 got it....
now that's all he he he

PDF output in character mode

Hi,
We are trying to print a XML out put in PDF format using dot matrix printer. The problem is, the dot matrix printer is printing in graphic mode, i.e. each line is printed as two halves. We need each character to be printed as a whole character. Due to graphic mode printing the report is not legible. Suggest some font that can be used in the template which will appear legible in dot matrix.
Or any other way to print the PDF output in character mode.

Hi,
this sounds like a printer driver / firmware issue. I'd suggest to discuss that issue with the printer vendor and maybe get support from them to get the printer working for PDF files.
Another option is to put some filters in the print queue to convert the PDF into other formats, bitmap or postscript or whatever the printer understands.
I don't think this is a problem related to BI Publisher, as long as the PDF displays fine on your screen.

Problem with printing in character mode

I got a genuine problem in printing continous payslips using character mode with a TALLY6050 printer.
I guess there is a problem with the page setup when i try to print via windows. using different sizes of paper (Letter, A4, A3), the printed data is shifting from one page to another but the shift is following a same trend.
i tried to put one payslip per page using page breaks, but in vain. Three payslips are being printed on one page when viewed in the print perview.
Can anyone suggest any help or tips so that i can solve this problem?

Thanks for your response. I went ahead and filed a Correction Action Request for your orignal issue, since I was able to reproduce the same behavior when I ran your VI. The solution of printing the front panel of a subVI displaying the same graph is a workaround for this problem. Please look at the following KnowledgeBase for more details on how to do this. Create PDF 1.1 is "incompatible with Firefox 35.0"

I'm using Acrobat Pro X and Firefox on Windows 7 x64. The Create PDF plugin (version 1.1) has been very useful, and has been working fine for a good while, even when Firefox recently upgraded itself to version 35.0.
But recently my main hard drive started to fail, so I've replaced it and reinstalled all my apps. But now in Firefox the Create PDF plugin is greyed out, with a note that it's incompatible with this latest version of the browser. I've tried uninstalling Firefox and rolling back to a previous version where I knew the plugin was working, but it's still greyed out. I don't know why, nor how to fix it. (I groan at the thought of having to reinstall my OS and applications all over again.)
I may have missed it, but I can't find any option on the Adobe site to download an update to the plugin -- assuming one exists that still functions with Firefox, and is available for download.
Can anyone help resolve this issue, please?

Yes, Acrobat X is updated to the latest version (10.1.13), but unfortunately the Create PDF plugin isn't actually updated. It's still version 1.1.
If other people have a more recent version of the plugin while running Acrobat Pro X, I'd really appreciate hearing how they got it.

Problem with character mode printing on epson lx-300

I developed a character mode report and is printing fine on the printer lx-300 when I use Reports 6i (Client/Server)
We migrated all the platform to OAS 10G Release2 bu the same report has the following behaviour:
1. The left margin is shift to lthe right about 2 inches.
2. Is printing shrinked and the characters doesn't see well.
The report is a character mode report of (132 columns, 66 lines).
I set the default prt to:
printer "dflt"
height 66
width 132
after page control(L)
return ""
linefeed control(J)
The run parameters are mode=character and desformat=dlft.prt
Anybody has experience using character mode reports on 10g on matrix printers like epson lx-300?

Here is a way out for the issue you have submitted. I can't guarantee that this wayout work perfectly:
Question:
As we know that the dos matrix printer supports dos prompt and thus printing speed and
life of the printing head is comparatively more than what we print the same in graphical format.
So when I tried to print from SAP Bone in dot matrix printer, the printing speed is very slow and quality of printout is not good enough.
Any clarifications on this regard would prove very helpful to me.

Do you use one of this printer types:
Dot Matrix, Printer, Needle Printer, Citizen ProDot 300 , Oki Microline, Epson FX880, Epson FX890 ?
Here the stepwise I have tried :
In order to print using Dot Matrix printers, follow the below
instructions:
1. Run SAP Business One.
2. Click the upper menu 'File' and select 'Page Setup'.
3. The Print Setup window opens. Under 'Paper', in the field 'Size', select 'Letter' from the drop down menu.
4. Click OK to confirm your selection.
5. On your desktop, click Start => Settings => Printers.
6. Right click on the required Dot Matrix printer and select 'Printing Preferences...'.
7. Click the 'Paper/Quality' tab page and click the 'Advanced' pushbutton.
8. Under'Paper/Output'=> 'Paper Size', click on the underlined paper size(e.g. A4) and select 'Letter' from the drop down menu.
Note that if you leave the value 'A4', each page will be spreaded over 2 pages when printing using Dot Matrix printers.
9. Under 'Graphic'=> 'Print Quality', click on the underlined value (e.g. 230X250 dots per inch) and select '120X144 dots per inch' from thedrop down menu.
Note that in case the value '120X144' is not available you should select a similar value from the list.
I did not test it yet and I am not so sure about the result but you could test it.
