Character Viewer won't start

Hi out there,
has anybody experienced this? When I try to start the Character Viewer from the menu bar it flashes on for a second but is empty and then disappears again. This repeats every 10 seconds or so. I've done a fsck and repaired permissions to no avail.

Update:
I had a look around the forum and tried the suggestion of trashing the the .plist files that contain 'CharacterPalette' in the file name - lo and behold it worked. Problem gone.

Live View Won't Start - Firefox flash Plug In

Everytime I try to start Live View I get a message saying 'Flash Plugin was not found. To view Live View install the Firefox Flash plug in from www.adobe.com. I click on the link and install the plugin but I still get the same error message.

Character Viewer causes major crash on start up

This is urgent, so any help greatly appreciated.
I switched on the Character Viewer (CV), can't remember which app I was in at the time.
It loaded the CV window, but it was completely unresponsive. No characters appeared, and I couldn't close the window (all window buttons dead). It also hovered over every application, in every space.
After a restart, my Finder is completely unresponsive. In Activity Viewer (before it crashes) I see CV loading, taking about 90% CPU. All I get is the spinning beachball, system wide, and on any application if I try and open it.
Tried starting in safe mode, same thing happens.
I've tried repairing disk and permissions using Lion Recovery's Disk Utility. Tried FSCK. Tried zapping PRAM, and resetting SMC.
Also tried catching the CV in Activity Viewer, and forcing it to quit. It soon reappears however and everything goes down again.
Nothing is helping....
I don't have this problem in other user accounts.
What can I do!?

well i tried deleting the preference file mentioned above and here:

And it didn't help.
So I deleted all preference files created since the incident, restarted and now everything's working again.
I lost a lot of app and finder preferences, including dock, mail and safari, but hey - my machine's working again.
NOTE: because the Mac was unusable from every start-up, I had to access it over a network with my Macbook. I used Xray vision to access the otherwise invisible ~/library/preferences folder.

Character Viewer disappears after it starts loading

Whenever I select Character Viewer or have to input special characters, the Character Viewer starts to load but then disappears. Hiding the viewer still works, but I can't get the viewer stay open. When I switch windows, it flashes again but disappears. What is going on?

Try trashing the .plist in Home/Library/Preferences which has CharPalette in its name. Plus possibly the one with systemuiserver in its name.

Mail won't start

hi everyone. since last night i cannt start my mail program. i tried the SHIFT key trick but still won't start. i have repaired permissions and verify the disk. still the mail won't boot. i have tried with a diferent user and all seems ok. here is a copy of the crash report thanks in advance for your help.

It looks like the preferences file has become corrupt. Try this:
1. If you have a .Mac account and .Mac synchronization of Mail data is enabled either in Mail > Preferences > General or in System Preferences > .Mac, disable it before proceeding.
2. Quit Mail if it’s running.
3. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to solve the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the Mail folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is locally stored.
4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate com.apple.mail.plist and move it to the Desktop (to be deleted if this solves the problem).
5. Open Mail. You’ll have to set up your non-.Mac accounts from scratch all over again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done.
6. You’ll have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
7. You may also need to re-install or re-enable any Mail plug-ins you have installed for Mail to recognize them.
8. As a side effect of re-creating com.apple.mail.plist, Mail might rename Outbox (which is where messages waiting to be sent are stored) to Delivered. The name of that mailbox is actually a misnomer, as it would contain messages (if any) that couldn’t be delivered for some reason. You can delete that mailbox if you wish.
9. If the problem is fixed now and .Mac synchronization of Mail data was enabled at the beginning, enable it again, go to System Preferences > .Mac > Advanced, click Reset Sync Data, and choose the appropriate options to reset the Mail data stored on the .Mac server with the data locally stored on the computer, i.e. sync data must flow from the computer to the .Mac server.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

Firefox won't start after 18.0.1 upgrade

I have upgraded to the latest version and then two days later, The mozilla Crash reporter opens and it won't start. Nothing happens when I press details.
I can't run it safe mode. The same thing happens.
I uninstalled and re-installed and same thing.
I then uninstalled rebooted and re-installed V16. That was then ok for a few days then same thing happened.
So I unintstalled rebooted and on went V15 which worked for about 8 hours. However I can't get any version to work now. The Crash Reporter pops up whatever version I have.

Firefox update failed, so I re-installed. Now firefox won't start up at all?

So I ran firefox, and it was updating. While updating, firefox crashed for no apparent reason so I had to close it. Afterwards, every time I tried to start up firefox, it gave me the update failed error, followed by a crash less than a second later. I followed some instructions, uninstalling and re-installing firefox (without removing personal data), but now firefox won't start up at all!

Error message Photoshop CS6 won't start in Windows 7

I am unable to start Photoshop in Windows 7 (64 bit Home Premium). I gegt an error message saying Photoshop CS6 won't start and telling me to close the program. Is this a common problem and is there a solution? I have tried opening the program in safe mode and tried a clean boot all without success.

ITunes and QuickTime won't start

Hi!
The problem is that I've installed iTunes, everything went fine, but when I'm trying to start it with iTunes.exe, it won't start.
I can see iTunes.exe in the task manager, for about 5 seconds, and then it disappears.
The same happens with QuickTime player(I don't really care about QuickTime but I thought it can help solving the problem).
I know there is a lot of topics about this on the internet, and yes I've googled it, but nothing solved my problem.
I tried a lot of things already:
* start iTunes.exe with administrator rights
* start iTunes.exe with XP and Vista compatibility modes
* reinstall iTunes with XP and Vista compatibility modes
* uninstall iTunes (and any other apple software), clean any leftover iTunes registry entry, and then reinstall everything again
* boot my windows 7 in safe boot mode, and try to start iTunes.exe
* turn off bonjour service then restart computer and try to start iTunes
* create a new user account, login and try to start iTunes
Nothing helped on Windows 7 32bit, though I have a Windows XP installed as a Virtualbox guest(the host OS is linux), and there is everything works fine, but I would like to use Windows 7.
I had the same problem with the previous version of iTunes. Now I'm trying to install the latest iTunes downloaded from the Apple's site.
I would really appreciate any suggestions!

Many thanks. Yes, let's first try uninstalling the ACE pack and seeing if iTunes will launch now.
If iTunes doesn't launch, the pack may have left behind old QuickTime version 6.x componentry in unorthodox locations in your Windows 7 system files. So we'll go looking for that.
First we'll adjust some view settings on the PC.
1. From the Start menu, click Computer.
2. In the Organize menu, click Folder and Search Options.
3. Click the View tab.
4. In the "Advanced settings" pane under "Hidden files and folders" make sure that the "Show hidden files and folders" option is selected, and the "Hide extensions for known file types" option is unchecked.
5. Click OK.
Now, in Computer, open your C drive (or whichever drive your operating system is installed on).
Open the "Windows" folder.
Open the "System32" folder.
What files or folders can you see in there with QuickTime in the file or folder name? (In a standard installation of QuickTime, you should see precisely two files ... QuickTime.qts and QuickTimeVR.qtx ... and no QuickTime folders whatsoever.)

Glyph View in Character Viewer?

Back in Snow Leopard, we had the possibility to view all characters of a certain font if we selected "View>Glyph" in the character viewer. In Lion, this option seems to be missing. Is there any way to browse all characters of a specific font?
The reason I need this: I have several special fonts with symbols for scientific work (really specialized fonts, with characters you won't find in the symbols Apple provides). In SnowLeopard, they didn't show up in the character viewer as normal symbols, but in Glyph View one could select the font and then all characters were displayed, so one could easily select the right symbol (my friends using Windows could even assign a keyboard shortcut for each character in their character viewer).

No, thanks. That still doesn't let you show the characters that are availalble for a particular font. That big assortment of arrows it's showing? Essentially useless, because they're not available in any font I can find.
I did discover a cumbersome workaround by using both Font Book and Character Viewer.
1. Go into Font Book and select the "custom" preview. Put the cursor in that editable preview area.
2. Now go over to Character Viewer and double-click the character or symbol you're interested in. It will be pasted into the "custom" preview of Font Book. However, there's a bug; for some reason after the special character is pasted in, the glyphs that were showing for the font will return to being boxes. You have to select a different font and come back, in order to display the glyphs again.
You can now use the up/down arrow keys to step through all the fonts in Font Book and at least see which fonts have the character(s) you're looking for.

Nokia 6288 won't start

Hello,
During updating my phones software by using NSU i got a warning the connection between phone and pc was lost so te update was not finished. Now my 6288 won't start anymore. Does anybody know how to solve this?

This is true, the phone has completely crashed and only an engineer can now get this working.

Macbook won't start

Macbook won't start up. Sounds like disc drive is spinning but screen remains dark as though startup file is not booting.

Did you also try reset of NVRAM/PRAM?

When you tried the Command + Opt + P + R keys on restart, held almost
immediately and through the time period it should chime on startup, did
you keep holding those keys down, so as to force it to repeat the chime?
You should do this (if possible to tell) through Three chimes, before you
let those keys go; that would be indicative of a NVRAM/PRAM reset.
Aside from the details and troubleshooting processes in the SMC reset
article from Apple Support, that could shed some light on the issue, if
these were done in their subscribed order before finally trying the SMC.

Depending on which MacBook you have, the details may vary; with some
you could try several items not possible with a later model, such as a hard
reset of the computer (remove battery, hold power button, etc) and other
details I am not going into now... Here's something that worked for this one:

There are some ideas there which may help. At least as far as trouble-
shooting. If you have access to an Apple Store with Genius Bar in the
USA or Canada, you could call ahead for an appointment to have one
of their staff genius tech persons diagnose and troubleshoot this issue.
In other locations, there may be fees charged to accommodate services.
Anyway, I an not certain what to suggest next.

Oracle 11g application won't start sometimes(jar files issue)

Hello,
The issue we experience is that now and then, our forms 11g application
won't start.
So it can be the case that, for example, the application can be started
succesfully 5 times in a row, but the 6th and 7th time, it won't start
anymore. But when we relaunch it for the 8th time, it launches perfectly.
When the application isn't starting, a new window is opened having a yellow triangle
with an exclamation mark on the top right corner.
After a long period, we suddely discovered that it had something to do with ".jar" files.
Because when we clear the "java jar cache" on the client machine
(start -> control panel -> java -> "general" tab -> "view..." button -> select all the files and click on the
cross(remove selected sources) ), the application succesfully starts for about 10 times in a row.
But the first time we start the application(after clearing the cache), it takes much longer, because the application
is downloading the .jar files again. (java logo appears with a progress bar)
But clearing the cache every time before starting the application can't be a decent solution we think.
When we enable all java debugging info in the console, we received the error below 2 times when launching a application session that refused to start:

Sorry, I meant WEB-INF\lib in the WAR file inside my EAR.
I put all the jar files in the WEB-INF\lib of the WAR file but it still does not work. I have to specify them in the classpaths and put the jar files in the domains\domain\lib directory
I thought if you put it in the WEB-INF\lib then you don't have to put them in the classpath.
Am I right?

Microsoft Forefront Server Protection Eventing Service won't start?

Hi Guys,
When Forefront Protection for Exchange was integrated/enabled on our SBS 2008 server, Microsoft Forefront Server Protection Eventing Service won’t start. Even when we try to start it manually we are getting this message (see attached). During this attempt,
we got these events in the event viewer. In this case, in order to have our email working, we have to temporarily disable Forefront. Any suggestion how to fix this? Please advise.

Based on error messages, it indicates a log file (inc.log) has become corrupted. Please restore the log file
from a backup copy, and then check if this issue can be solved. For more details, please refer to the following article.

Web services won't start - error 100002

Hi there
I have done a freash install of Leopard Server 10.5.4 and updated to 10.5.8 on an Xserve G5. Added a 2nd web site (in addition to default) and now web services won't start returning the error:
A service has encounted an error.
Try to refresh the view (mysever.com/Web)
(Could not start web service - details in error log.)
