Check Open Files or Sockets

Hello everyone!
We got some alarms on our Ironport regarding "Check Open Files or Sockets". It's been bouncing up and down the last couple of days. What does this check mean? Is it the amount of active TCP connections or is it something connected with the malware/anti-virus engine?
We're currently using version:
AsyncOS Version:          7.6.2-014
We add new customers to the device so it would be natural that the amount of connections would increase.Our warning limit is set to 3000 at the moment and our CPU, Memory etc are still OK. Would you recommend raising the value to 3500?

Correct - this would be the # of open connections on the appliance.  With you running 7.6.2 - I would be interested to know if you were hitting a recently known defect in our RepEng --- and you would be running a higher number of connections out connecting/pending senderbase lookups/results/turn-around.
Without your appliance actually reporting any issues with a application fault, or other administrative notification - you are relying just on the SNMP query for the monitoring of the service and value.
Check and make sure this is updated:
myesa.local> repengstatus
Component                 Version    Last Updated
repeng_tools              1.2.0-079  03 Mar 2014 13:40 (GMT +00:00)
repeng                    1.2.0-079  03 Mar 2014 13:40 (GMT +00:00)
If not - please run 'repengupdate force', to pull down the latest engine and ruleset.  This should alleviate any connections issues this presents back to the OS, and possibly is increasing the # of connections.

    I keep getting the message: "what should Firefox do with this file" in Windows XP every time I want to download a file, e.g., adobe, excel, etc. How can this annoying message be deleted? The check box to "open file automatically" does not work!

    cor-el,
    Thanks for your prompt reply. However, the sources you gave do not seem to apply exactly to my situation. I have attached some screenshots that show what the dialogue box looks like for a pdf download, and what my settings in the Apps panel of Options are. You will note in the first screenshot that I have checked the box to handle this file type automatically; however, the next time I try to download a file of that type, the same dialogue box appears looking exactly like the one shown, so checking the "automatic" option appears to do nothing. The files to be downloaded from my Gmail messages are not generic or altered file types - they are shown as pdf, doc, docx, etc. So while your intent was good, your post did not help. Thanks anyway.

  • Firefox keeps asking me what program to use to open file types even though I have selected one and checked "do this for all files of this type" going foward

    I am working in Windows and every time I open an attachment, Firefox asks what program to use to open files of this type. I always select the proper program and then check the box that says use this program for all future files of this type. In spite of that, the program continues to ask for every file. How do I turn off this feature and just have the program remember the correct program to use for each type of file extension?

    Regardless of your download preferences, web servers can trigger a download prompt by sending either the ''Content-Type: application/octet-stream'' or the ''Content-Disposition: attachment'' header. You can check if that's the case by examining the server response headers in the [https://developer.mozilla.org/docs/Tools/Web_Console Web Console].
    For the latter problem install the InlineDisposition add-on and see if it helps.
    * https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/inlinedisposition/
    If the problem persists, post back here with either an example link or a screenshot of the relevant response headers in the Web Console.

    How can I check the open-mode of an opened file from the file refNum?
    Especially whether a file is opened as read-only or write-only? I haven't found any VI in the panel with file VIs.
    Thanks for any hints!

    Check this post. Probably you can use a kernel.dll call.

    Hi,
    System check showing up error 'Actual open files limit:7000, needed 8000 nodes:' in our BIA system.
    SAP BIA Admin guide suggested open files limit should not be less than 8000. I verified at OS level
    ulimit for open files (-n) is displayed as '8000' which is good.
    Please suggest me how to fix this error. What if we increase ulimit value for open files at OS level?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Experts,
          We are extracting data from R3 and we have an  problem with this error message
    Cannot open file </data_work/shuttle/ab.dat>. Please check its path and permissions.This problem occurs everyday but with different jobs. One day the job runs fine and sometimes fails with this message. All permissions to the file are fine its so intermittent with these jobs that we unable to source the problem. Also after the problem occurs when you re run the job it runs fine.
    Its also hard to re create the issue. BUt happens pretty much  every day during our production schedule
    Does the job server fails to read it??
    We are using DS 12.2.0.
    Hopefully I've explained it properly
    Appreciate your thoughts on this

    How are you tranfering the file? Shared directory? What about trying with the FTP server method?
    (You need an FTP server on your SAP machine.., IIS for Windows, ftpd for Unix)
    This way the FTP protocol would take care of the transport to your DS machine.
    An advantage is that with the FTP method you can put retries into the DSConfig.txt file.

  • Include Unicode Signature (BOM) Always Checked When Opening Files

    When I go to "File > Open..."  in the Menu, the option for  "Include Unicode Signature (BOM)" seems to be always checked by default.  Is there some way to change this behavior?  There is an option for turning it off for creating new files but not opening existing files.
    And yes, I know you can also open files in the Files panel, but this question is pertaining to the Menu.
    I'm using Dreamweaver CS6 on Mac Lion and any help would be much appreciated even if it requires hacking configuration files.
    Thanks.

    i had this problem,
    and i found solution
    you must open folder Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Dreamweaver CS6\en_US\Configuration\DocumentTypes\NewDocuments
    in this folder open file - Default.php
    press Ctrl + J and uncheck unicode bom in encodings and save this file.
    ready !
    when you create new file, bom will not be checked!

    Hello!
    On MacOSX 10.4.10 which is an OD master, my log are filed with this:
    DirectoryService[67]: socket(PF_ROUTE) failed: Too many open files
    It happens at exactly every hours 44 minutes 18 seconds 161 times. At the same time, it makes a lot dns request for "kerberos-master.udp.XXXXXXXXX.COM IN SRV +"
    The server works fine, but there's probably a cronjob that go crazy and i would like to know why it's happening.
    Thanks a lot!

    Hi,
    Cause might The server got an exception while trying to accept client connections. It will try to backoff to aid recovery.
    The OS limit for the number of open file descriptor (FD limit) needs to be increased. Tune OS parameters that might help the server to accept more client connections (e.g. TCP accept back log).

  • Downloading a binary file using sockets without length known

    Hi all,
    I'm trying to download a binary(.exe) file using socket, where the length of the file is not known. Please take a look at the code I'm using:
          var readBin = socketBin.read();
         <-- Here comes the code that checks for http Content-length header field
         ; If content-length field is available, then I'll use it to download file, else proceed with following code -->
        pBar.reset("Downloading plugin..",null);pBar.hit(readBin.length);
                while (1)
                    binFil.write(readBin);     //'binFil' is the file, into which downloaded file is written.
                    readBin = socketBin.read();
                    pBar.hit(readBin.length);
                    if( socketBin.eof || readBin.length<=0){
                        break;}
                binFil.write(readBin);
                binFil.close();
                socketBin.close();
    Problem is: I'm able to download file within 10 seconds when content-length is known. But when content-length is not known, its taking about 1 and half minute to download, also the progress bar gets struck for much of time.
    FYI: socket is opened in binary mode, file is getting downloaded correctly(even though it takes abt a minute). BTW Im using CS5.5 extendscript
    I'm not able to figure out where the bug is.

    Hi, Srikanth:
    Sevaral points.
    #1 When posting code, please use the web interface and the >> icon and choose Syntax Highlighting >> Java. Otherwise your code is just too hard to read and gets misformatted.
    #2 Apropos of #1, your script as written does not work, because this line:
    url=url.replace(/([a-z]*):\/\/([-\._a-z0-9A-Z]*)(:[0-9]*)?\/?(.*)/,"$ 1/$2/$3/$4");
    has an extra space in the $1 and should be this:
    url=url.replace(/([a-z]*):\/\/([-\._a-z0-9A-Z]*)(:[0-9]*)?\/?(.*)/,"$1/$2/$3/$4");
    Please take an extra moment to make sure that when you asking for help, you do so in a way that makes sense. Otherwise it takes too much effort to help you, and that is frustrating.
    #3 If we instrument your script by adding a line to the while() loop:
                while (1)
                    binFil.write(readBin);
                    readBin = socketBin.read();
                    $.writeln(Date()+" Read "+readBin.length+" chars, eof is "+socketBin.eof);
                    if(  readBin.length<=0){         break;}
    We get output like this:
    Mon Jul 11 2011 12:06:56 GMT-0400 Read 1024 chars, eof is false
    Mon Jul 11 2011 12:06:56 GMT-0400 Read 1024 chars, eof is false
    Mon Jul 11 2011 12:06:56 GMT-0400 Read 1024 chars, eof is false
    Mon Jul 11 2011 12:06:56 GMT-0400 Read 631 chars, eof is false
    Mon Jul 11 2011 12:07:06 GMT-0400 Read 0 chars, eof is false
    Result: undefined
    Therefore, we can reasonably conclude that the last read at the end of the data stream returns a short read when the other side blocks.
    Unfortunately, that's clearly insufficient since you can get short reads all the time.
    I'm not sure why you say the length of the file is not known, HTTP provides it to you in the Content-Length field of the response.
    But the easy answer is to get the server to close it for you. This is easy, enough, with Connection: close. Why were you specifying
    Connection: keep-alive, anyhow?:
                var requestBin =
                "GET /" + parsedURLBin.path + " HTTP/1.1\n" +
                "Host: " + parsedURLBin.address + "\n" +
                "User-Agent: InDesign ExtendScript\n" +
                "Accept: */*\n" +
                //"Connection: keep-alive\n\n";
                "Connection: close\n"+
                "\n";
    This yields a nice tidy:
    Mon Jul 11 2011 12:26:19 GMT-0400 Read 1024 chars, eof is false
    Mon Jul 11 2011 12:26:19 GMT-0400 Read 1024 chars, eof is false
    Mon Jul 11 2011 12:26:19 GMT-0400 Read 1024 chars, eof is false
    Mon Jul 11 2011 12:26:19 GMT-0400 Read 735 chars, eof is true
    Mon Jul 11 2011 12:26:19 GMT-0400 Read 0 chars, eof is true
    I suspect you're also better off using something like socketBin.read(64*1024) for a 64k buffer size, but it doesn't seem to effect the on-the-wire protocol, so perhaps its not so important.

  • Sudden increase in open file descriptors

    Our system is live since an year and half and for the first time I encountered the following exception
    "java.net.SocketException: Too many open files"
    When our internet application stopped responding I immediately checked the number of open file descriptors on my Solaris machine by using the "lsof" command and found that it was an abnormal 600 value and as I continued monitoring it reached 1024 in matter of minutes and WebLogic gave the above exception. The current setting for file descriptors is 1024. But all these days the average number of open file descriptors was well below 220.
    I also took thread dumps and found that most of the threads were stuck at the following location

    There is no file descriptor leak in the application. My question is since all the threads are hung at JDBC and socket level, does it mean that a faulty query would have triggered this problem(may be the database was too busy executing a faulty query).
    I suspect this because I recieved a database exception soon after the problem appeared. One of my database insert transaction had timed out after 300 seconds. Also this was the first time I recieved this kind of an exception

    Hi,
    I am using WebLogic 8.1 SP2 on a Solaris machine.Ok, good enough. Once WebLogic times out a transaction, it rolls it back on the
    connection. That Sybase driver's rollback doesn't unfortunately affect it's
    own running statements. For 81sp3 we added code to explicitly cancel any ongoing
    statement during a rollback. This may be what you need to free up those
    threads and the socekts the driver may be keeping open. If you can upgrade
    to a newer version of 8.1, this code will free you up. Alternately, you can
    try either upgrading to Sybase'e latest driver or to our BEA driver for Sybase.
    Ask support for the latest BEA driver package for 8.1.

  • File Server Role: Slow access for "opened files" and slow Explorer browsing

    Since we migrated our fileserver from Windows Server 2008 R2 to Windows Server 2012 we are facing two major problems:
    1. Opening files which are already opened by other users takes about 1 minute before the file actually opens. This is not only for Office files such as Excel and Word, but also for other (not office) files. Again, this problem only rises when the file(s)
    is/are already opened by another user. There seems to be a sort of "Lock" check time which is about 45 to 60 seconds.
    2. The other problem is browsing via Explorer through the network drive (all clients are Windows 7 clients). Half of the time there is some kind of "hick up" with displaying the results of the folder. I cannot figure out a patern, but if there
    is no "hick up" then browsing is very fast (also in the busiest times of the working day)... If there is a "hick up" the result can take about 50 seconds to display the content of a folder.
    I suspect the SMB implementation / settings of Windows Server 2012 which are causing the problems...
    Things I tried:
    1. Changed the Oplocks wait time to 10 seconds (which is the minimum). The result is that openening files does indeed go some faster (still taking about 45 seconds).
    2. Disabled SMB2: the result is that browsing is fast... Opening files does go faster. BUT: we are then facing other problems like some files are not able to open... This setting was, after getting a lot of complaints from the users, changed back to enabled
    SMB2.
    3. Within the NIC card properties I disabled "QoS packet Scheduler", "Link-Layer Topology Discovery Mapper I/O Driver", "Link-Layer Topology Discovery Responder" and IPv6 (as we only use IPv4).
    All above with not the promising results.
    The server is a dedicated (virtual machine on vSphere 5.1) fileserver.
    Please Advice since this is not workable, and we have postponed the migration of the fileserver for our aother location.

    Hi Dave,
    I suggest you disable all third party applications like Anti-Virus application to test if it could reduce the waiting time when accessing a file.

  • InfoSpoke fails with message "Could not open file on application server"

    BW Experts,
    I created an InfoSpoke that is configured to extract to a flat file. The name of the file is specified using a logical filename. During extraction, the infospoke reports the error message "Could not open file on application server" adnd  marks the extraction process as red(failed). I have tried to run the InfoSpoke in background mode and in dialog mode and the same error appears. After i run in dialog mode, i checked SU53 for authorization errors and did not find any. I also tried changing the Logical filename setup in transaction FILE to a more "friendly" directory in which i'm sure i have authorizations (e.g. my UNIX home directory) and im still getting errors.
    Can you please share your thoughts on this? Any help will greatly appreciated. I also promise to award points.

    Hi Nagesh,
    Thanks for helping out.
    If i configure the InfoSpoke to download to a file using "File Name" option and also check the "Application server" checkbox, the extract works correctly (extraction to the defualt SAP path and filename=infospoke name). If i configure the InfoSpoke to download to the local workstation, the InfoSpoke also works correctly. It's only when i configure it to download to the application server and use the "Logical filename" option, that i encounter a failed extract.
    Here are the messages is the Open Hub Monitor:
    (red icon) Request No.147515
    0 Data Records
    Runtime 1 sec.
    (red icon)Run No. 1
    0 Data Records

    Messages for Run
    Extraction is running RSBO 305
    Could not open file on application server RSBO 214
    Request 147515 was terminated before extraction RSBO 326
    Request 1475151: Error occured RSBO 322
    If i clink on the error message, no messages nor clues are displayed. Note, this is a new InfoSpoke that is currently in the dev system.
    Please help.

  • Does anyone know why Adobe CC is failing recognise or open files taken on a Nikon D4 that have been previously edited in CS5?

    I'm just migrating some of my image archive across from one hard drive to another.  During the process, I checked the files in Bridge to see that they'd copied correctly.  It was here that I noticed that for some reason, in every folder that I've moved, there are at least a few images that it fails to recognise.  These images are listed as having no camera model and no serial number.  Attempting to open them in Photoshop CC says that it is an unrecognised file.  Bridge struggles for a while, manages to eventually recognise a lot of them but always leaves a few that it cannot work with.
    Having looked at the original drive, the files are fine and open perfectly.  One thing that I've noticed is that some (not all) of the now corrupt files have been previously edited in CS5.  Removing the sidecar xmp file makes no difference.  Purging the cache makes no difference.  Repairing permissions makes no difference.
    I am running OSX Mavericks (10.9.3) and have the latest updated version of CC.
    Please help!
    Leon

    I'm using an Intel iMac, 3.6Ghz Intel core i5 with 12GB of 1333 Mhz DDR3 RAM.
    The iMac has OSX 10.9.3 installed with all of the latest updates.
    I'm using Adobe CC with all of the latest updates installed so Bridge is version 6.0.1.6.
    I have repaired permissions, rebooted the Mac, re-started Bridge and cleared the Bridge cache.
    The raw files are .nef files from a Nikon D4.  They are currently stored on an external Western Digital red hard drive and all of the images are accessible and load correctly.
    In moving the files across to a new Western Digital green drive, Bridge is failing to create some of the thumbnails.  After waiting for all of the thumbnails to be created, the remaining files are simply displayed with a nef files icon.  Any attempt to open them fails, with Adobe Photoshop CC displaying a message stating that the file is not in a format that Photoshop can understand.
    On investigating further, I have found that the images that are causing issues are ones that have been edited before and have sidecar .xmp files.  These .xmp files were created during editing when using Adobe Photoshop CS5.1.
    I hope that's everything that you requested.

  • Photoshop gives "Program Error" when I try to open files while VPN

    I think this may be a new one. While VPN on my company network, Photoshop CS cannot open any files. Either drag and drop, double click or even file open command. You get the clock and the message "failed to open because of a Program Error.... " or something close to that. I'm sure it says Program Error though. Works fine if I'm not VPN but soon as I'm on it stops opening files or even creating a new blank canvas gives that error. I checked Adobe forum and nothing there to find about this one. Anyone else have this happen?

    Hi, SSI.
    1. What VPN client are you using?
    As a guess, your VPN client may be blocking a port that PS CS may use for license verification over the Internet. The fact that it works AOK when not using the VPN would tend to support this hypothesis. As to what port it may be attempting to use, I can't say, but you may be able to find this out from Adobe and then work with your firm's networking staff to see if this port can be opened for use when the VPN is active.
    2. You noted that you "checked Adobe forum and nothing there to find about this one." Did you post to the Adobe Photoshop forum? If not, I recommend doing so.
    3. You wrote: "You get the clock and the message "failed to open because of a Program Error.... " or something close to that. I'm sure it says Program Error though."As FYI, in cases such as this, copying down the exact text of the message is helpful.
    Good luck!
