Checking for latest version process

I'm currently testing the Java Web Start technology with an applet. I'm dealing with a total of
2.8 meg of jar files divided up into approx 20 jars. It currently takes approximately 20 - 30
seconds for Java Web Start to determine if the cached jars are current. We would like to further
divide the applet in even more smaller jars, this would make maintenance and future
enhancements, changes, more convenient.
Does anyone know the process the JavaWebStart goes through to check for changes?
I'm wondering if more smaller jars with make the initial version checking faster of slower.
Thanks

(using basic protocol) Java Web Start does a HEAD request on every resource in the jnlp file to check the timestamps with the ones recorded in it's cache, so breaking into more jars may slow this down.
If you include the <offline-allowed> tag, (even if you run online) Java Web Start will go ahead and launch the app from the cache while continuing the timestamp check in the background, this could significantly speed up the apps launch.

  • JWS Hangs "Checking for Latest Version"

    Dear Colleagues,
    Were facing up a problem with the following situation:
    the "checking for latest version" process seems to be hanged, or better, very, very slow.
    We just got answer after more than 10 minutes in average.
    The environment:
    Apache 2.0.54
    JRE 1.4
    Any suggestion?
    Tks.

    Sounds like the delay may be due to searching the
    jnlp cache. Restrict the cache size and see ehat
    happens.That's not it. I tried it even though the cache is empty except for my app and it didn't help. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

  • Endless Checking for Latest version

    JavaWebStart works fine when used anywhere within the network. However, we we logon to the network using a dial-up connection, java webstart never seems to pass the Checking for latest version screen. This screen runs for as long as the dial up connection stays up. Has anyone seen this type of behavior? Another interestin fact is that webstart's examples run fine with our dial connection. It is slow but it works. Here is my jnlp

    Our team ran into the same problem trying to connect to one of our test web servers, when the client ran Webstart using JRE 1.4 from behind a certain evil
    Proxy Server, Webstart would get stuck in the "Checking for latest version". Note that this only happens when behind the proxy, everything runs fine with
    a direct connection and users behind the proxy using JRE 1.3 also did not experience any problems. We later discovered that Webstart would complete the downloading of
    updates and run our app, only it would take 40 minutes to complete (left it running overnight). The strange thing was that this problem only
    occured when connecting to certain web servers of ours while there was absolutely no problem whatsover when connecting to other servers.
    What we found was that when Webstart made a request (HEAD and later GET), the server would send the header/file back correctly. But we did notice
    one thing. For the servers that were "working" we noticed that it would send the response and then close the connection. But for servers that
    weren't working we discovered that it would send back the response but it WOULD NOT immediately close the connection. Instead the connection is
    kept alive until a few minutes later.
    The solution was that for web servers that were working, we had the KEEP CONNECTION ALIVE option OFF. (In the case of IIS its the Keep-Alive checkbox).
    On web servers that weren't working (Webstart getting stuck checking for updates) the Keep alive option was ON. That was the problem. Once we disabled
    the Keep-Alive option on all our web servers everything was fine and users behind the proxy, using webstart with jre 1.4 were once again able to
    Check for Updates quickly and proceed to launch the app, whereas before it would take 40 minutes to Check for Updates and load the app because for
    each request it had to wait for the connection to time out (900 seconds) before the next request could be made.
    Well thats what we found in our research. We were pulling our hair over this for nearly a week. Hope this helps.
    Thanks,
    Nathan

  • Where is link for Offline installer, scepinstall.exe for latest version, curently 4.7.209 ???????

    Where is link for Offline installer, scepinstall.exe for latest version, currently 4.7.209 ???????
    I have looked for a link in the past for the scepinstall.exe file and it is always a MAJOR PAIN, if not impossible to find!!!!!!
    Microsoft NO LONGER HAS AN EXCUSE FOR THIS LINK NOT EXISTING!!!!!!!!!
    They have been told that it needs to exist and the logic for it is without error.
    The ANSWER WILL NOT BE IT DOES NOT EXIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    There is NO EXCUSE FOR THIS NOT TO BE AN EASY TO FIND DOWNLOAD MICROSOFT, NO EXCUSE, except maybe laziness or greed, but no technical or legal reason for it not being made available, obviously!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    There MUST BE A PERMANENT LINK MAINTAINED BY MICROSOFT WHERE I CAN AT ALL TIMES GO TO DOWNLOAD THE LATEST GREATEST STANDALONE SCEP CLIENT AT ALL TIMES!!!!!!!
    Today it would contain version 4.7.209. When the next version is release I will click on the same link and it will down load that new version EVERY TIME, NO EXCEPTIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    I have been able to capture, during an update the epplauncher.exe file and its accompanying folders etc, but that installer does not support any command line switches like the scepinstall.exe version for the client installer does. Needless to say that is
    ridiculous and stupid and incompetent of Microsoft to do, but that is what they did so needless to say I need the SCEPINSTAL.EXE version of the client installer that supports the command line switches, x64 and x86 in one file, no need to program in a check
    for that. And of course a link is absolutely required so that I can always find the latest version and I will never have to re-write my install script every time the install files changes, or a new version comes out, nor spend time trying
    to capture the file during an update etc. etc. etc.
    Also don't tell me to go to the SCCM administrator, because he doesn't have a clue as to where this can be found or even that it exist. (The link given in the forums for finding it on the SCCM server DOES not maintain the latest greatest version at all times
    so that is also not the answer.)
    I should also NEVER have to extract it from the SCCM updates such as "Cumulative Update 4 for ConfigMgr 2012 R2" which is where I found the 4.6.305 version a few months ago.
    Thanks for the help, get your act in gear MS,
    Ralph

    Ralph,
    You won't find a link to download as the SCEP update is treated as a Windows Update via ConfigMgr.
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3036437?wa=wsignin1.0
    You could join Connect and log this request with Microsoft by joining the Configuration Manager programme.
    https://connect.microsoft.com/
    You might want to lay of the exclamation marks when you do so, it would look a bit more professional.
    Be aware there have been reported issues with the version of SCEP you are wanting to install.

    If you want just the originals, then you can go into the Aperture library (right click on it and do "show package contents"). Inside is a directory called "Masters" and you can find the original files in a bunch of subfolders.
    But... you'll lose all adjustments, keywords, and other information, and just have the files as they were imported originally from the cameras.
    Easiest is probably to buy Aperture and update everything, and then migrate to the Photos application down the road if that's what you want. Aperture 3.0 came out in 2010 (five years ago!) so it's not like you've upgraded in a while

I cannot find where this would be in firefox and have an application that depends on seeing a "fresh" copy of a page each time it's served up by the web. Please advise.

    I just want to know how I can change the settings to check for newer versions of stored pages in Firefox.

    There is a hidden preference that controls when Firefox checks for a newer version. # Type '''about:config''' into the location bar and press enter
    # Accept the warning message that appears, you will be taken to a list of preferences
    # Locate the preference '''browser.cache.check_doc_frequency''', double-click on it to change its value

  • Can't get Firefox to load at all after trying fixes from support web site. Have checked for lock file, processes running, reboot, reinstall. NO JOY.

    I'm running Vista for operating system on an HP laptop that's about 2 years old. I've installed all current updates.
    I've always used Firefox. It started crashing and creating processes but not launching. Went to support and scoped it out -- there was a lock file my profile directory. I deleted it, and Firefox started loading.
    Used it a few times -- closed the app each time on exist as per suggestions on support site info. One time -- back to square one, wouldn't load, just created a process. Reboot, ending process, checking for lock file, reinstalling -- all unsucessful.

    Below is from using a SIP build.  It does offer G722, but it's way down on the list so it's never used...
    m=audio 32678 RTP/AVP 0 8 18 102 9 116 101
    a=rtpmap:0 PCMU/8000
    a=rtpmap:8 PCMA/8000
    a=rtpmap:18 G729/8000
    a=fmtp:18 annexb=no
    a=rtpmap:102 L16/16000
    a=rtpmap:9 G722/8000
    a=rtpmap:116 iLBC/8000
    a=fmtp:116 mode=20
    a=rtpmap:101 telephone-event/8000
    Taking Sreekanth's suggestion to try a Skinny build, I get the following when I make a call.  It offers codecs in the order I SET THEM AND ONLY THE CODECS I SET!  YAY!
    m=audio 19374 RTP/AVP 9 0 101
    a=rtpmap:9 G722/8000
    a=fmtp:9 bitrate=64
    a=rtpmap:0 PCMU/8000
    a=rtpmap:101 telephone-event/8000
    Using a Skinny build on the phones also solved other issues.  The phones use G711 when the whole path supports G711 and G722 when the whole path supports G722.  It doesn't always use G722 and rely on transcoding for the call paths that can't use it.  It's fantastic..  The phones also receive the QoS tagging that I set and that seems to result in better audio quality than on the SIP builds, which never did get those settings.  Finally, it even solved a slow Exchange 2013 answer issue I have been experiencing for quite some time.  I practically fell out of my chair when I saw everything that was fixed just by switching...
    Cisco, PLEASE FIX YOUR SIP BUILDS!  It's insane how the SCCP builds work perfectly and the SIP builds don't, especially with how much these phones cost..  I was thinking of possibly acquiring some 9951s, which are SIP only.  I'm a little leery about that at this point.  If they have the same kinds of issues as the SIP builds for the 7975g, there's no SCCP alternative to use..
    Sreekanth
    Thank you for suggesting a Skinny build..  That was about the only thing I didn't try.  I am happy beyond belief that this is working so well now, even though the SIP builds should be just as well developed as the SCCP ones.

  • APG advises iTunesSetup.exe for latest version of Itunes contains virus

    I have tried to upgrade my itunes for Windows onto my Windows Vista laptop, however everytime I try to upgrade it either comes up with errors, or in this last instance for iTunes 10.5, it stated that I was missing a .dll. (Sorry didn't write down which .dll). So I deleted it in its entirety.
    I am now trying to do a new complete download of this latest version and APG stops me stating that there is a virus within the exe file. I asked for more details, which it didn't provide. I 'vaulted' the .exe. What do I do now? I am using Chrome as my browser. Help!!

    So I've now tried to download latest iTunes through IE which worked. However after restarting I'm getting the same message as when I tried to update - AppleSyncNotifier.exe - Unable to Locate Component - This app has failed to start because CoreFoundation.dll was not found. Re-installing ...
    Will now run AVG to see if it still says there is a virus.

  • How to check for latest Apps in the App Store

    Is there a way to check for the latest apps. I only see options to sort by name and by best-sellers. If there is no way how can i request this feature. Thanks.

    As I understand the Mac App Store, that sort is already done for you in Features. The first category on the Features page is New and Noteworthy, with the link to See All.
