Checkpoint lsn and  Normal recovery

Are there any conditions which result in a "normal recovery" to do the redo/undo processing beyond the "checkpoint lsn"
We have noticed that sometimes the recovery takes more than 5 minutes to complete and we are checkpointing every 30 seconds.

I see no reason for normal recovery to complete just "sometimes" in more then 5 min, as you're checkpointing the env every 30 seconds. Also, double checking that the checkpoints are actually in the log files ( [db_printlog|http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation/berkeley-db/db/utility/db_printlog.html] ) when the recovery takes so long, would be the first thing I would do.

  • Confused about transaction, checkpoint, normal recovery.

After reading the documentation pdf, I start getting confused about it's description.
Rephrased from the paragraph on the transaction pdf:
"When database records are created, modified, or deleted, the modifications are represented in the BTree's leaf nodes. Beyond leaf node changes, database record modifications can also cause changes to other BTree nodes and structures"
"if your writes are transaction-protected, then every time a transaction is committed the leaf nodes(and only leaf nodes) modified by that transaction are written to JE logfiles on disk."
"Normal recovery, then is the process of recreating the entire BTree from the information available in the leaf nodes."
According to the above description, I have following concerns:
    1. if I open a new environment and db, insert/modify/delete several million records, and without reopen the environment, then normal recovery is not run. That means, so far, the BTree is not complete? Will that affact the query efficiency? Or even worse, will that output incorrect results?
    2. if my above thinking is correct, then every time I finish commiting transactions, I need to let the checkpoint to run in order to recreate the whole BTree. If my above thinking is not correct, then, that means that, I don't need to care about anything, just call transaction.commit(), or db.sync(), and let je to care about all the details.(I hope this is true :>)
    michael.

    http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation/berkeley-db/je/TransactionGettingStarted/chkpoint.html
Checkpoints are normally performed by the checkpointer background thread, which is always running. Like all background threads, it is managed using the je.properties file. Currently, the only checkpointer property that you may want to manage is je.checkpointer.bytesInterval. This property identifies how much JE's log files can grow before a checkpoint is run. Its value is specified in bytes. Decreasing this value causes the checkpointer thread to run checkpoints more frequently. This will improve the time that it takes to run recovery, but it also increases the system resources (notably, I/O) required by JE.

  • Some doubt about Bdb XML Normal Recovery

    Hi, everyone
I have read the document Getting Started with Transaction Processing for Java shipped with Bdb XML 2.4.13. In the book, there is something about Normal Recovery:
Normal recovery is run only against those log files created since the time of your last checkpoint. To test this, I have designed a scenario as below:
The ENVIRONMENT directory is under E:/bdb-xml/environment, and the BACKUP directory is under E:/bdb-xml/backup, the CONTAINER name is entry.dbxml, and there is already a document 1.xml in this container.
    1. run db_recover against ENVIRONMENT.
    2. copy entry.dbxml to BACKUP.
    3. create a document 2.xml.
    4. run checkpoint against ENVIRONMENT.
    5. modify document 1.xml.
    6. run checkpoint against ENVIRONMENT.
    7. copy log.0000000001(there is only one log file in ENVIRONMENT) to BACKUP, Note that I didn't copy the entry.dbxml in ENVIRONMENT.
    8. run db_recover agaist BACKUP(now there are 2 files : entry.dbxml, log.log.0000000001).After that, I used the BACKUP as environment directory, and try to query 2.xml. And I retrieved the document correctly, which I feel very curious. As the document says, the last checkpoint is created by step 6, after that, there is no other modifications happens, so the modification happened at step 3 and step 5 will not take effect when db_recover executed. But the two changes have committed to entry.dbxml.
So, which is the last checkpoint. And what is the those log files created since the time of your last checkpoint.
I also want to know where the checkpoint be writen, in the db files or the log files.
    thanks advance.
    Regards,
    John Kao.

    Jhon,
You really do want to know the gory details don't you? :-)
Running recovery in your backup directory will cause the container there to pick up all changes from the log file that it does not yet have. The checkpoint on the original container doesn't mean anything to the backup container.
Let me point you to even more interesting documentation that is in the Berkeley DB documentation set. This page has all of the BDB documentation, including links that are not included in the BDB XML doc:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation/berkeley-db/db/index.html
The "Getting Started with Transaction Processing" documents on that page have the sort of information you seem to want.

I am experiencing some major problems with my MacBook Pro. I have had some issues with it turning on/off at random times, but today, when starting, I get the grey start-up screen and a recovery bar. After filling in approx 1/4 of the way, the machine dies. After starting it in recovery mode, it will not allow me to download OS X Mavericks- it says the disk is locked. Any ideas? I do not have a back-up and do not want to erase everything before I have explored my options. Help?

try forcing internet recover, hold 3 keys - command, option, r - you should see a spinning globe
most people will tell you to do both pram and smc resets (google) and if you still have issues, either clean install (easy) or troubleshoot (hard)

  • What are smart mailboxes and why do i need both smart and "normal" ones?

What are smart mailboxes and why do I need both smart and "normal" mailboxes?

    Hi Kingoftypos,
Thanks for that clarification. So, now it appears that the ultimate purpose of a Smart Mailbox is to point to all emails that meet the criteria in a single place, so if they are spread among several mailboxes, you will be able to see them all together. Here is an article from Apple that describes it:
A Smart Mailbox displays in one location messages that are stored in other mailboxes, so you don’t have to move messages between mailboxes. The messages displayed by a Smart Mailbox are based on criteria you define, and are automatically updated to include new messages that match your criteria. For example, you might create a Smart Mailbox that displays all messages found in all mailboxes from a specific sender.
If you change a message in a Smart Mailbox, such as marking the message as read or unread, or moving or deleting the message, the change is reflected in the mailbox where the message is actually stored.
So, adam, I would think that, if you had mail going to a lot of different places, and wanted to be able to see a particular set of those in a single place, you would use a smart mailbox. Maybe use the rules to direct your mail to different places to start with, but a smart mailbox to bring a set of common ones all together into a single smart mailbox?
Maybe you have Rules move your Amazon mail to an Amazon folder and your Apple mail to an Apple folder, but then you have a Smart Mailbox that contains any mail that has the word "Receipt" in the Subject line?
    Just a thought....

  • Project Materials and Normal Material as a part of Sales Order

    Dear Sir,
Can any body tell me d scenario when I can create Project material and Normal materials in the same sales order ?
My requirement is that I am using milestone billing. But this is applied for 1st 2 milestones only. For the rest it is delivery related billing.
So my solution is to create project material for milestone billing and actual materials for delivery related billing. So in delivery it will pick from my project stock with 601 Q movement type.
I cannot test this scenario in SAP due to some technical problem. Can anybody plz tell me that I can do this in Std SAP ?
    Thanks for co-operation
    Regards
    Keshav

    Dear Keshav,
Probably you need not create two materials. Create a "Z" item category group and assign it in the material Sales org 2 tab. Under "Assign Item category Group" in SD configuration, you need to map the sales Document type, Item category group and Default item category. Have default item category as TAN and Manual item category as TAO. ( please choose the default as per your need). Once you are in the sales document, have TAN item category for the line item for which you require Delivery related billing and TAO for the line item for which you require milestone billing.( You can change the default item category ..which defaults based on your configuration). Double click and notice that now a billing plan tab appears for the item relavant for Milestone billing.
I think you also have to configure the schedule line category so that the project stock is picked up while delivery. Please take help from your SD consultant.
    Warm regards,
    Srinivas Potluri

  • Difference between RDA delta and normal Delta

    Hi All
I have some doubts regarding the RDA [Real Time data Acquisition] process I am aware  that RDA enables us to get the data every  minute with help of Daemon process. What is the diffrence between th delta mechanism that is followed in RDa and normal dataflow.
    Thanks & Regards
    Santosh Varada

    Hi Varda ,
RDA is Real Time Data Acquisition . In this We can retrieve Live data . While using Normal DTP We can t pull live data
For example :- Today We have Create a 50 orders . This 50 order information pulled after completion of  sales order creation . we can t see live . But RDA process pulled the data at the point of sales order creation it self ,It support only Stranded DSO .It will use Some industries like FMCG.Retail, banking sector they want to know current data information from BI Side then RDA.

    Hi,
From technical point of view, there is no difference, Instead of using R/3 tables you will be using IS-U tables in you select queries etc...
Functionally there are differnce in ISU and R/3 (SD/MM/PM/FI etc..)

    Hi surya,
Interface node or methods comes into picture whenever you want to use one component as used component. I mean to say
Component usages. If you select node as interface node, it will available in another component so you can use that node or methods.
Normal node means in that component only. Simply we can say for component usages we go for interface nodes.
