Choose a firewall

My case is like this: an (web)applcation server hosts multiple web apps for the public to access. Moderate traffic. The server is located in a Commercial Hosting Company's server room. So the server can directly plug into the LAN (which is connected to the internet).
1) Among the PIX 50x series, which firewall fits this situation better? (I'll need the firewall to support the NAT, DMZ and VPN). Or I may even need other firewalls (budget sensitive).
2) Is the double firewall necessary to build the DMZ? (i.e. PIX --DMZ-- PIX)
3) Any opinion or comment on the Microsoft ISA Server 2004 (which claims to be a better firewall).

AFAIK if you have a PIX firewall like either 501 which has 2 Fastethernet port or 515E which can have max 6 fastethernet port can serve your purpose.
If you want to configure DMZ with PIX itself then you would require on more fastethernet port additional to one input and one output interface.
output interface is the one which gets you connected to the outside public world (LAN here) and the inside port connects to your local lan or server farm.
you can alwasys isolate the local lan and server farm to 2 different zones if its present or else you can connect you server up to the inside port itself.
But do remember that you are configuring it to allow all the reqd ports which ius accessed by the public.
Also you have the advantage of configuring normal VPNs and also configuring the pix as easy vpn server too to cater your mobile users .

Firewall question -pls help

okay - so i was reading about system profiler today and opened it and clicked down through the various catogories then I come to Firewall- and it reads
"Firewall Settings:
Mode: Allow all incoming connections"
Now this rings alarm bells - I thought my firewall was on. I go to system preferences and look in Internet& Network> Sharing as this is where (in previous operating systems) I remembered the firewall was set - except it isn't anymore. All the sharing boxes are unticked. I go into security and there is Firewall. "allow all incoming connections" is ticked.
1) This is presumambly where i turn the firewall on or off, right?
2) Allow Only Essential services? What does this mean - the firewall is on? what constitutes an essential service?
3) Hypothetically could my computers privacy been compromised?
4) Has my firewall potentially been like off since i upgraded to leopard?
Am feeling a bit stupid right now. Any help graciously accepted!

-This will take you trough the basic settings done on a mac to secure it:
In System preferences go to Security > Firewall, the default setting is "Allow all incoming", this does not compromise your privacy, only that Mac OS X will decide what it needs. I´d go for "allow only essential services" then press "Advanced", from the drop down choose "Enable Firewall Logging" and "Enable Stealth Mode".
In the Sharing pane make sure no boxes are checked.
Thats the basics, if you wanna secure your mac in such a way that it would make Fort Knox look like a 7/11 go here for further tips :

Firewall Port 3689 blocks sync?

Hi there,
I have an apple TV and an iMac and when i want to sync them i usually get the error message "sync not possible...check if a firewall blocks port 3869" (or so, message comes of course in my native language german).
However, i dont have a firewall, the firewall is not activated in system settings and when i change something in the apple TV s<nc options and try again it will sync
any ideas?

I was having the same problem ...
Sync from iTunes (MAC G5 / OS X 1.5.2) to Apple TV (V 2.0.2) fails with "Apple TV is not responding.
And the suggestion to check the FIREWALL settings on the computer (running iTunes) for PORT 3689.
I found that I could resolve the issue by using the "SECURITY TOOL" of "Systems Preferences" and choosing the "FIREWALL" tab.
(1) Choose the mode of operation "Set access for specific services and applications"... then
(2) use "+" tool to add an entry for the iTunes application (Allow incoming connections) ... then
(3) when you select the "+" tool, a dialog will open to allow you to navigate to application location, select iTunes, and a new rule entry will be created in your FIREWALL.
(4) Restart iTunes ... and you should be able to SYNC from iTunes to Apple TV with the FIREWALL ON.
In the past, for most applications, Apple has usually added the required application access rule to the FIREWALL. Apparently there has been a revision in this practice.

Mostly firewall device achieve those processes. You may concern other topics. DDOS attacks, Botnet filter, VPN capability.
Such as ASA firewall split their interfaces by security-level. It cannot permit traffic from lower security-level to higher security-level except you permit special traffic.

Urgent help required for network configuration

i have a mixed scenario right now.
I have only three computer on home network.
1.vista accer travelmate 4720 laptop loaded with vista sp1 ultimate
2.normal pc : Core2 duo with XFX ATI REDION graphics card and this pc is loaded with OEL 5.3.x linux but this pc has 2 NICs(eth 0,eth 1) I have connected both with a switch and the switch is connected to a modem for internet.can I use one NIC as private and another NIC as public to access internet?
3. normal pc : P4 HT and its loaded with win xp sp2 having eth 0
how to set my network.
I have connected each NIC with a D-Link switch.And the D-Link switch is connected with DataOne Nokia Siemens network c2110 modem.
But problems are that
1) each time i can connect only one PC at a time.
2)OEL 5.3.x is not connected to the specified modem ever....by [adsl seup|http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=832112&tstart=0] command.should i configure it during installation?is there any easy shell scriot avilable to do this stuff?

WLM Not playing videos, says I need Flash, but I have it installed

Okay, I originally had a topic going in Microsoft Tech Support, and was told to come here, so I'll copy my original post there.

Okay, since I bought and installed this version of Windows I have been having a problem with WLM, which has just now gotten to the point where it is becoming a hassle. Whenever I send or am sent a video link I will get an error that says "To send or receive Windows Live Messenger content, you need a newer version of Adobe Flash Player. Once Adobve Flash Player has been installed, you may need to exit or restart Windows Live Messenger," which is followed by a link to where I can download Flash. The link, http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/thankyou/activex/?installer=Flash_Player_10_for_Windows_I nternet_Explorer however, is dead. At various times in the past I have attempted to solve this on my own. In brief, what I have done is as follows:
Uninstall and reinstall Flash
Uninstall and reinstall WLM
Roll back to previous versions of Adobe
Updating a pre-existing installation
Reinstall all drivers
Reinstall Windows
thirty minute Prime95 torture test
Fresh installations of WLM with and without MSN+ and Mess installed separately and individually, and in differing orders
Manual and automatic registry integrity checks.
Avast Anti-Virus on and off
Windows Firewall on and off
Comodo Firewall on, off, and at all security levels (I installed this after I had tested Windows Firewall, it is currently uninstalled)
Connected through different routers and directly into the modem
Adobe stress test
Verified Adobe Flash installation integrity twice
After all of this I still get the same error whenever a video link appears in a conversation.
The last post, which lead me here, was this:
Please check how many Adobe flash player you have installed and what version/s are they. To check please access Programs and Features located at Programs under Control Panel. You should at least have 2 listed ( Active x and plugin ).
Also it is possible that installed flash player is corrupted. Kindly uninstall then reinstall Adobe flash player installation in your computer. For steps in uninstalling flash player, please click on the link below:

If issue still persists, it would be advisable that you contact Adobe support for proper assistance. I recommend that you install flash player thru Internet Explorer. If flash player doesnt work on these websites then the problem is with flash player, not with Live Messenger.
All posts in between the first and last have been similarly unhelpful, and I was quickly escalated to "Experts" and didn't hear anything for two months. Now I was told to come here, so here I am. I am using the latest version of Flash, and as my original post stated, I have installed it, it is not corrupt, it works on everything and anything except WLM.
I have searched Google, Microsoft Tech, and Adobe tech previously. None of the proposed solutions have solved my problem, and as you can probably tell from my list of solutions, my own research became quite disparate as I neared my wit's end. Any help at this point would be greatly appreciated.
And yes, I checked for multiply installations of Flash Player as he suggested, even though I knew I only had one. And I have also installed it with every browser I could find.

IE9 displays that page and every other page with Flash content correctly. I can start a Flash program directly on my desktop and run it using Flash. My personal assumption was that WLM is pointing to a place that doesn't exist, but I have a friend with a very similar setup, and his WLM is fine. Odder is that on my old computer running Vista I had installed the Seven Transformation Pack from windowsxlive and could watch videos on WLM even though Vista didn't have that capability before. It is only upon installing Windows 7 on this computer that I have had any problems.
I have considered that this is a bad copy of Windows 7, but everything else works perfectly, and I would have had to have installed a corrupted WLM application half a dozen times to still have this error if that were the case.
WLM is a 32-bit program, installed to C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Messenger

GPO For Disable Network Discovery

I have DC Windows Server 2008 R2 and clients with Windows 7, 8 and 8.1
I want disable users Access to computers from Network Discovery.
I apply GPO to remove Icon Network from Navigation Pane and it works perfect, but when users access to computer on network from RUN they see Network on Address bar. For example user access to Server from RUN
\\Server\ if user do Click on Network on address bar see all computers on network.
My Question is, How to prevent users see computers on network, how disable network discovery completely?

We can try the following solution to see if it helps.
In a new or existing GPO:
1. On Computer configuration, choose Policies, choose Security Settings, choose Windows Firewall with Advanced Security.
2. On Windows Firewall with Advance Settings, choose Inbound Rules, right click and choose New Rule
3. On Rule Type, select Predefined and choose Network Discovery, choose Next
4. Choose only the following rules:
a. Network Discovery (LLMNR-UDP-In)
b. Network Discovery (NP-Name-In)
c. Network Discovery (Pub-WSD-In)
d. Network Discovery (SSDP-In)
5. On Action choose Block the connection
6. Press Finish
7. On Inbound Rules, right click and choose New Rule, select Next
8. Choose only the following Rule:

WebLogic 8.1.4 on Fedora Core 4 - Installation problems

Hi,
while installing the WebLogic plattform on FC4 (as root, SELinux disabled, running X11, JDK 1.5 installed), I cannot convince the system to start installation in GUI-mode... The message I get is "Unable to instantiate GUI, defaulting to console mode."
That's the first thing. While installing WLP 8.1.3 on SuSE 9.2 there was no such thing.
After I installed WLP in console mode I cannot run the config.sh in GUI mode as well - although other Java-Gui apps are running fine here...
Has anybody got similar case?

Found the solution in the post below - thanks to Chris.
I had the same problem and from the other posts I read it looked like the installer was getting blocked from using X - most likely by the firewall settings or the SE Linux components.
I got the install to work fine straight away by disabling the firewall and SE linux.
The GUI way: Desktop->System Settings->Security Level (then enter the root password)
Then choose 'Disable firewall' in the 'Firewall Options' tab and uncheck the 'Enabled' in the 'SELinux' tab. This will apparently require a reboot as well.
The first attempt after the reboot saw the installer run straight through.
I know I could have worked out what port was being blocked - and maybe it was only the firewall & not SE Linux - but I was in a hurry & on a secure LAN so I'll leave that as an exercise.
Hope this helps - and don't forget to turn the firewall back on.

Playstation error

I keep getting an error every time I try to log in to our psn account (ps4) which says Playstation error nw-31456-9

@hiptechboy: yes I get disconnected from playing online with both wired and wireless connection. I also have MAC addressing set up I just erased my ps3 mac for security purposes (sorry), the signal strength for my ps3 is *runs over to the ps3 runs back* is 100%
@dibbler: Yes these erros occur even when I'm hard wired in... and I I'm under the impression that I have the highest availilbe firmware for my router I'm on firmware v1.0.05 for my wrt120n... Question: don't I need UPnP to be enabled for PS3 to work? also I couldn't find Block Anonymous Internet Request under the security tab i checked under all the tabs.... Here's a picture: btw I didn't choose the firewall setting... I did the port triggering 53 to 10080 through the port triggering tab, is that right? I also reduced the mtu to 1365 as you asked... I'll edit this post after i go and try it out right now... Thank you all so far for the help!

Error "Unable to instantiate GUI, defaulting to console mode" while installing weblogic 11g in linux OS.
I tried to resolve the error, need to install SUN JDK 1.6_18 or higher and set JAVA_HOME path but at a time of weblogic installation, I choosen JDK which is come with weblogic.

Seems like the installer is getting blocked from using X - most likely by the firewall settings or the SE Linux components.

You might want to reboot the server after this.
It could also be becuase the port was being blocked and maybe it is only the firewall & not SE Linux,so I'll leave that exercise to you :)
Also, try to locate the X11 library libXtst-1.0.1-3.1.i386, which is required for making generic installers to use the GUI, in case you are using Generic Installers.
Hope this helps and don't forget to turn the firewall back on.

ADE does not recognize NookColor

I have ADE installed on my computer and I can download ebooks to it. I want to transfer the ebook to my Nookcolor but ADE does not "see" it. What do I need to do to get ADE to "see" my Nookcolor? Thanks.

I spent HOURS trying to figure this out and I finally fixed it. It takes multiple steps.
1. First you need to delete the adobe.digital.editions file on your Nookcolor (because it loaded but did not register you need to do it again) See steps below
Connect your NookColor (NC) to your computer and then try to wake up your Nookcolor. It should tell you it is now connected by USB and you can transfer files.
Once you see this, go to My Computer and choose whatever drive your NC is connected to (you will need tochoose Open Folder to View the files in Windows Explorer - if it asks you that question)
Open the NC files in windows explorer
You will see a file folder named .adobe-digital-editions
Delete it (we will reinstall it later). I promise it will not hurt your NC
2. Make Internet Explorer your default browser (don't know why but found this to be part of problem in my research) and close any other browser
3. Make sure Digital Editions is closed on your PC
4. Turn off your firewall (DON'T forget to turn back on when we are done!)
Go to Start menu to Control Panel and choose Windows Firewall
Turn off firewall
4. With your NC still connected to PC, Open Digital Editions on your PC
It should now ask you if you want to authorize a device (your NC) say YES!
Now when you are in library view of Digital Editions you should see MEDIA listed at the bottom - that is your NookColor
To add books in Digital Editions to your NookColor you should just click and drag the title of the book to the word MEDIA
Your books will now be on your NC and SHOULD be authorized (eliminating the credit card questions)
5. Eject your NC from your PC (right click on the drive it is located on and choose Eject)
6. Turn your Firewall back on (Start, Control Panel, Windows Firewall, On)
7. Wake up your NookColor (not connected to PC anymore) and check to see if you can open your books
Click on Library and choose My Files and then Digital Editions
You SHOULD see the books you copied from your PC
Open Digital editions folder
Open a book AND IT SHOULD WORK!
Hopefully, this will help you. If not, try deleting the old books you had tried to download before and start fresh. You can delete them while your NC is connected to your PC and you are viewing the files in Windows Explorer - that is the only way to delete books from your NC. I am a computer software trainer so I tried to make these instructions as user friendly as possible. Good luck!!

actually dont do any of what i said.... i just figured out that you have to type your password when your screesaver is on and you want to use the mac. *DONT DO WHAT I SAID BEFORE.*

As i turned on my iphone 4s on and connected to a wireless internet a page opened from the app firewall ip and i usually choose all connections. so it got stuck i held the standy by button but it won't turn off. so i held the standyby and home buttons.

As i turned on my iphone 4s on and connected to a wireless internet a page opened from the app firewall ip and i usually choose all connections. so it got stuck i held the standy by button but it won't turn off. so i held the standyby and home buttons. when it opened all apps music and pics where not there. why? then i enterted photos and the loading logo appeared then the standyby appeared and i entered my password and everything in my iphone was there but thing were scattered and apps wheren't in folders everything was messed up but no photos or music AND IT SAYS UP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SCREEN EXIT SAFE MODE. so i restarted it again and it opened and nothing was there and again i entered photos and the samething happen again. why did this happen? and can i get my data back? and in the usage it says that these thing are there but not showing.

I found that out 2 years ago, it's just that I thought Apple might have changed that.

SQL Installation for SharePoint 2013 - Windows Firewall - Profile - domain, Public and Private - Which ones to choose?

Hi there,
I am setting up SQL Server (to be used in our SharePoint 2013 farm).
The Firewall exception for SQL server gives me three choices in Profile section as
Domain, Public and Private profiles
Which ones should I choose please?

How do I configure my Airport Extreme firewall?

I seem to remeber configuring a firewall on my Airpot Extreme/Time Capsule when I first set it up. How do I get into it again to check the configuration settings - The Airport Utility does seem to provide a way in.

There is no "firewall configuration" on the AirPort Extreme. It provides a NAT firewall but this automatically closes all ports apart from the ones you choose to open.
