Choose macbook pro.

Hi,
I need to know which macbook pro I should by for my needs.
I'm a graphic designer and I've been working for one year with an iMac 21,5" 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 8GB Ram and never had any problem of velocity also using many programs at the same time.
But it gets very slow when I have to render (Cinema 4D and After Effects).
I haven't notice any difference in upgrading my Ram from 4GB to 8GB. It would be enough to buy a quad core or GHz and 16GB Ram would make the difference?
What about retina, any better performance except from graphics?
Thanks,
Nicoletta

SSD=Solid State Drive. The Retina display models come with 'flash storage' which is basically the same thing and non-Retina MBPs can be ordered from Apple with up to 512GB SSDs. However, Apple's prices are outrageous when it comes to SSDs and most folks prefer to go a third-party route and install a SSD themselves. A SSD and additional RAM would likely speed up your rendering considerably.
I don't use Cinema 4D - I deal in print only at the moment - so I'm not sure which two squares you're speaking of... and, of course, don't know how to get more!
Call back with any questions.

  • Help choosing MacBook Pro

I want tog et rid of my current MacBook Pro. It is a 17-inch 2.6GHz from early 2008. Since the case is 2 separate parts the screws are become loose and the top case starts to move and wiggle a lot which is really annoying. Also I never thought about me being mobile with it, because I take it to school and now I regret getting the 17-inch. So my dad has decided to buy me a MacBook Pro for graduation on the 24th. By the way i'm in 8th grade so don't think i'm spoiled. I want a 15-inch MacBook Pro, but i'm afraid it will have problems like people have been having. (i have been reading some forums) Should I get a refurbished 15-inch MacBook Pro? I'm only going to be using the machine for listening to music on iTunes, Surfing the web in Safari, and doing some reports in iWork. I also never turn off my MacBook Pro, I just shut the screen so it goes to sleep. What MacBook Pro do you recommend for my needs? Should I just go for the base 13-inch?

Both are quite capable when it comes to it.  I would also look at other used and refurbished Mac shops, with the proviso, you are aware of the limitations on this FAQ*:

Any Core2Duo or Core i processor with at least 2 GB of RAM should be able to  handle your needs. Only games or high end software such as the latest Photoshop or Final Cut software might need more horsepower. Their specs are online, so be sure to match both processor and GPU to the machine you choose. Apple is about to release a new operating system known as Mountain Lion.  Its features may be of interest to you.  If they are, see this tip on what is needed:

  • What drive to choose, MacBook Pro Retina 15"

    Hi,
    I'm considering buying a new MacBook Pro (15" 2,7 GHz quad-core, NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M / 1GB).
But could you give me advice on the following.
Since this MacBook has flashmemory, I wonder if it's still necessary to work with a external harddrive for your source media.
If an external harddrive is not necessary with the flashmemory drive, I think I'm going for the 512 GB storage. If on the other hand you do recommend an external drive for your source media, than I might be going for the 256 GB version.
    Thank you for your advice!

Thunderbolt is faster and also way more expenive, with not a lot of support. Conversely, USB 3.0 is fast and universally accepted. Graphic card is insufficient and hopefully you will at least get the max 16GB of RAM.

  • Which is much better for me, MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display or MacBook Air 13"?

Hi! I'm a High School Student, and I really need help in choosing the right MacBook. So which is which?
I'm really confused in choosing which MacBook suites. I have been researching about the specs of each MacBooks; some websites say "MacBook Pro is much better" while the others "MacBook Air is better than the Pro". I'm totally confused! And PLEASE HELP ME!
Here is what I need for a laptop:
*I will use it for Editing Videos and Photos
*sTORAGE for my Documents! (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Adobe)
    *PRINTING documents and stuff
*Great Quality for Movies, Videos, and Music
    *GAMES!!! (Assasin's Creed, Sims, etc.)
    *Other Apllications
    *Storage for my stuff
*Best performance for INTERNET, SOCIAL SITES, & ENTERTAINMENT
    *Handy and Easy to use
*Lightweight ('cause I have to bring it to school for reports and I have to bring i to to different places for conventions or seminars)
*STORAGE for my Photographs, Music, Movies (edited and downloaded)
    *Long Lasting Batteries
    *FAST and  QUICK
I'm really confused, which shal I choose: MacBook Pro because it has the best performance or MacBook Air because it is very convenient.
I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IF YOU HELP ME.

Unfortunately, you mentioned "GAMES!!!" - no Mac notebook is a good gaming machine (sad but true). For everything else, however, I would recommend a MacBook Pro (Retina or non-Retina - whichever you prefer, although my preference is for the non-Retina: it lacks the portability of the Retina but is user upgradeable whereas the Retina 13" machine is limited to 8GB of RAM, soldered onto the logic board, and a 'fixed' storage space).
I haven't looked at the specs but I'm assuming that the Retina model would be only slightly heavier than the Air. But it would out-perform the Air should you desire to try games with it.
Good luck - we get these "what shall I buy" questions all the time but, in the end, it's your decision.

I am unable to reinstall Photoshop CS6 (I do have the serial number) on my Macbook Pro 10.9.5 (Mavericks os). and am getting the message "Installation on case-sensitive volumes is not supported.  Please choose a different volume for installation."  I am further told that "Adobe apps cannot be installed on case-sensitive drives, you need to Install the product onto an HFS+ or HFSJ non-case-sensitive drive."
What I don't understand is this:  I originally bought and installed Photoshop CS6 back in March 2013, and it worked fine.  Yesterday my hard drive had to be replaced and my computer person salvaged as much of what was on it as he could, but now I have to reinstall Photoshop.  1) Why did it work before and it's not working now?  2) Is there anything I can do that does not involve reformatting the hard drive?

It means what it says. The "computer person" formatted it wrongly/ unsuitably. it needs to be formatted again.

  • MacBook Pro airport doesn't choose 5 GHz network when waking from sleep

    Hi,
I recently set up a Time Capsule [TC] 802.11n (4th Gen) as my airport base station catering for my MacBook Pro [MBP], iPad (1st Gen), iPod (3rd Gen) and BlackBerry 9900. I have it set up in dual-band mode (2.4/5 GHz) with the same SSID, mainly hoping to take advantage of the increased speed of the 5GHz band during Time Machine backups - I get a Transmit Rate of 300 Mbit/s when connected at 5 GHz and 145 MBit/s at 2.4 GHz. Aside from that I don't really care which it chooses to be honest - my internet connection is only 12 Mbit/s. When I start up my MBP from a full shut down within an 'appropriate' distance from the TC, AirPort automatically selects the 5 GHz band and falls back to 2.4 GHz if I stray too far.
The problem arises when I wake my MBP from a sleep (which is pretty much always having closed the lid each time I'm done using it) and AirPort ALWAYS selects the 2.4 GHz band and will never change to the 5 GHz band unless I fully disconnect from the network and then reconnect.
The iPad and BlackBerry both switch happily between the two bands as I move around the house, opting for the 5 GHz when possible  and always without intervention so the set-up obviously works.
I think it's a problem in Snow Leopard having read problems around the internet from users who have upgraded from Leopard to SL, most of whom seem to do what I'm thinking, i.e. setting up a different name for the 5 GHz network and putting it higher in the priority list that the 2.4 GHz one, however the solution isn't ideal/elegant and certainly not how it's supposed to work, but I've yet to find a definitive solution from Apple anywhere.
Anyone else having this problem? Anyone found a solution? Anyone heard anything from Apple?
    Thanks!

Yes. I'm having a very similar problem. I don't have TC, but I have a netgear wndr4000. I'm always bring my MBP out of sleep and having to manually select the 5GHz band. Even when I know it should. I have different SSID's on each band, and I have tried setting the priority order, but that has another set of problems. When I get a little farther away, it will hook to the 5GHz band at 54Mb, but the 2.4GHz will be at 130Mb at the same distance. I thought it would make some type of smart choice about it.
I had been thinking about moving to a Airport Extreme because I've been told by others that their machines make the correct choice with the SSIDs set the same.
I too am on Snow Leopard, but I'll be upgrading soon.

    What are the main differences?
4gb of ram should be sufficient and I doubt I would ever upgrade to 8gb.
as for graphics, I would mostly only need a mac that would allow me to play the latest Sims games. the first has a graphics memory of 512 and the second has 256.
    Thanks in advance.

Any of these SATA HDDs that are at least the same size as your internal HDD (preferably larger capacity).  In addition you will need an enclosure, preferably one with a Firewire as well as a USB connection.

  • Can I buy "Adobe Photoshop CS6 Extended", choose the platform "Windows" and then install it both on a Windows PC and as second installation on a MacBook Pro (on OS X)?

    Hello everyone,
I want to buy "Adobe Photoshop CS6 Extended" but have to choose a platform (Windows OR Mac) during the buying process. When I buy Photoshop, I'm allowed to install it on a second Computer, but use just one copy at the same time.
Is it possible to install the same licence both with the Windows PC and a MacBook Pro with OS X on it?
    Thanks!
    Sincerely,
    Mo

a ps license allows either 2 pc or 2 mac installations.  to install on both mac and pc, you must purchase two licenses, or subscribe to adobe cc which does allow 1 pc and 1 mac installation for all adobe programs.

The only photo I could find of a 'genuine' Apple Arabic keyboard (NOT a keyboard cover/skin):
It's from an older MacBook, it looks like, but I imagine that the MacBook Pro keybaord would be similar.

  • I am going to buy a macbook pro 15" but i can't choose between glossy or anti-glare

i am going to buy a macbook pro 15" with the 8gb ram and all that jazz but i can't choose between the glossy or anti glare they both will apply to my daily use but i cannot decide. is it possible to pick lets ay the glossy one then if i dont like it switch to the anti-glare or not ?

You can replace the screen later on, but at a cost.
Best bet would be to go to an apple shop and have a look at the 2 side by side and decide for yourself; if there was 1 that was better than the other, apple wouldn't give you the choice.
p.s. on a personal note I like the glossy one better. nicer picture IMO

hi, i got Macbook Pro 2007, OS X 10.5.8, I would like to update my system, which one I should choose? tks

Mountain Lion is the current version of the latest OS, with Mavericks coming this fall.
However, I would suggest that you simply upgrade to Snow Leopard -> http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard. It's a very good, very fast OS and, best of all, it can still run those PPC apps that you may be using.

  • I keep trying to download my photos to my MacBook Pro, when I insert my disc I get this response: You inserted a blank CD. Choose an action from the pop-up menu or click Ignore. Anyone know how to fix this?

I have been trying to download photo's from a CD onto my MacBook pro but when I insert the disc I get this box that pops up onto my screen:  You inserted a blank CD. Choose an action from the pop-up menu or click Ignore. Is there a way to fix this so I can use my photo's?

Bummer. Could be a problem with the MBP drive. Are you using Re-writable discs maybe?
Check the discs work in your HP machine. They may have burnt but not successfully. Your HP machine may not be able to open them either.
Have you considered using a USB flash device to transfer the photos, or just copy them over your home network? CD is a slow an cumbersome method.

  • What to choose: MacBook Core 2 Duo or 2006 MacBook Pro Core Duo ?

I have this dilemma… want to buy an Apple laptop to use mainly as a desktop, hooked to an external 22” display, keyboard and mouse, as I’m using it for graphics apps (Adobe CS3) or video apps.
I have to choose between a Core 2 Duo MacBook or an 2006 Core Duo MacBook Pro.
(about the same price range, the Pro is still more expensive)
Don’t care much about drive space as the files are stored elsewhere, so my question is a propos the graphics capabilities (and maybe heating?) – which laptop is better to use heavily in clamshell mode to do graphic design and such?
    Thanks.
    G5 desktop   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

    Hi tdrb,
Both model are able to run Lightroom and Aperture:
    http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/
    http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshoplightroom/productinfo/systemreqs/
but intel GMA is not that superb on 3D modeling if you planning to add 3D software later on, so I agree with mort for that.
Also macbook only comes in 13" while the smallest mbp comes with 15".
So if you only bring your portable laptop to clients, they will see better on 15" compare to 13"
Also on mbp you can choose matte or glossy lcd screen, and from my experience, I prefer matte finish when I do graphic composition.
For calibrate the tone color, you can use color guidience from pantone or other third party software and hardware like spyder, etc.
But the decision is yours to make, visit apple store run aperture on both and compare how that will response (remember 2006 model might slightly slower than new model on apple store) and which is preferable to your eyes.
    Good Luck.
