Choosing a port

Hi I have made a multiplayer java applet game and i am trying to decide on a port for it to use. What's the best way to choose a port that won't conflict with other programs?
The game is a picture puzzle game. If you want to try it, here's the link:

Read the article, then pick one that's not in use.

Your computer's os has some method of showing you what ports are in use.

  • Choose local port for an URLConnection

I wondering when you make an URLConnection which local port is used. I think it's choosen randomly by the OS but I'm not sure. If it's the case, I could have a serious problem with a firewall. I know that you can create a Socket with choosing the local port you want to bind for the communication, but you don't have directly access to it with an URLConnection.

Source port numbers for ip-based protocols are generally of the ephemeral variety. It is normal for a firewall to be configured to support any source port from some set of ip address ranges to gain access to specific ports on some set of ip address ranges on the the destination side. Your use of URLConnection will behave just as any browser would.

  • Choosing the port of an RMI server

I need a server working on a port wich is differet from the default 1099, e.g. 2500.
I create my server object which extends UnicastRemoteObject with code like this
    public MyServer(int port)
    super(port);
Befor starting the server I run rmiregistry 2500 and the I pass the port number to the server by command line.
It seems all right to me but I get the same an error message.
    What's wrong?
    Thanks in advance for answers

I' m sorry. I'm new to RMI and I wrote a Chess Playing RMI software for university. I have managed to make it work on the default port but I don't know how to "escape" from 1099.
I surfed the Internet for tutorials or code samples but they simply say: "To create an RMI server on the default port 1099 write code like this..." and I can't find the way of changing the port anywhere.
I didn't write the exact error messaage, and I apologize for that, but it's because I did many trials and often the message changed. It's enough that someone tells me how I have to look to learn the exact way of programming an RMI server on a chosen port.
    Thanks

  • Choosing a port for Client/Server applications

Just going through the Sun tutorials and trying to establish a connection. In the KnockKnockClient example program they have initiated a new Socket with a server name and port number as follows:
kkSocket = new Socket("taranis", 4444);I've changed the taranis to "127.0.0.1" and port number to something random that is unused (37838) but I still get an IOException.
Are there any particular ports I can use on my local machine to get the programs up and running?

  • Chooser not finding a port

My printer is not connecting, the chooser is not able to choose a port, i inadvertlantly changed the settings, and don't remember how to get back there, can you help?

I hate to butt in on this interesting 2-way
discussion but I fail to see anything about what
printer or what port. We always assume it is an
inkjet printer which is usually non-AppleTalk and it
is connected by USB. Is that what it is? I know a few
Epson printers can connect by Firewire (!!!) but you
most likely are using USB, right? It's an important
    question.
Now, assuming non-AppleTalk printer and USB, what
else do you have that will connect via USB? Try
another device. Sounds like the USB port or the USB
cable is not communicating. And try another device no
matter what you see in the System Profiler. That
thing will usually show the port hardware present but
what is that hardware doing? Profiler hasn't a clue.
If you find that the USB port is fine, try
    reinstalling the printer software.
It a n Epson 7401, USB, and nothing else is connected other than the keyboard. so you think reinstalling the Epson software will do it?

  • Connection to server on port 25 timed out

Can't send mail. Connection to the server "smtp.ca.astound.net" on port 25 timed out.
I keep getting this error when sending mail. I can receive mail but just can't send.
I noticed this problem sometime after installing the Security Update 2006-005, Security Update 2006-007 and Airport Firmware Update 5.7. I don't know that any of these are the cause but I'm trying to provide as much detail surrounding the problem as I can. I had been receiving and sending mail with no problem for the several years that I've had this set up and now I can't send mail.
I am using a 17" Powerbook running OS 10.3.9 and connecting wirelessly to an Airport Extreme. I'm using Apple Mail as my email software, but I have also tried to send through Entourage with no luck. I am using an email account and SMTP server provided by my ISP. I also have an old iMac running 10.3.5 that is wired directly to the Airport. I have an email account set up on the iMac and can't send from there either.
My ISP (Astound), who handles the cable modem, has said that they haven't made any recent changes on their side and confirmed with me that my account settings are correct. I even deleted my account and rebuilt it with no success. Although I am able to send email through webmail using my ISP's website. Based on that test they say that there aren't any problems on their side.
Are there some settings on the airport that may be affecting this? Any ideas on what I'm missing? I'm baffled.

Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list.
Also, try using a different method to connect to Internet, if possible, or connecting the computer to Internet as directly as possible, i.e. bypassing any routers that might be present, using an ethernet cable instead of wireless, etc., and see whether that makes a difference.
It could very well be that the problems are related to having installed a system update, usually not because of the update itself, but rather as a result of not having installed it properly, or having ignored Apple’s "Important: Please read before installing" warnings, etc.
Some (but not all) of the problems caused by not having installed an update properly can be fixed by (properly) reinstalling it. If you suspect a particular update could have a bearing on this, proceed as follows.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, reinstall any updates that may not have been installed properly. In some cases, it may also be necessary or convenient to reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using, unless this is the version of Mac OS X that came with your computer:
Mac OS X 10.3.9 Combo Update
Take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.

  • Using multiple MIDI in and out ports... is there a any solution?

    Hi Guys,
I've been using Logic Pro for about 3 or 4 years, and have always struggled with the fact that when using external MIDI instruments, there are not separate drop-down menus for PORT IN and PORT OUT, where I could choose which port would be used on my MIDI interface.
I was previously a Cubase user, and it had these two ports, so I could easily choose, for example: "MIDI IN: Port B" and "MIDI OUT: Port C", and MIDI would be routed to those ports.
Logic only has one drop-down for selecting ports, and that is for the outgoing MIDI signal only.
My problem is that when we want to record say two synths at the same time, each on its own MIDI track, the incoming signals are blended and played on both active tracks.
There IS a tick-box option in Project Settings, called Auto demix by channel if multitrack recording, but this only works when all the channels in question are armed for recording. If we are just jamming ideas (but want to have MIDI set up ready to record... therefore local is off on each synth, etc...), it appears there is no way to separate the incoming MIDI signals so they only go back to their respective ports.
This issue has now compounded with the addition of two new synths in my studio... suddenly it's even more crucial to be able to easily separate the MIDI ports for each of the four synths.
I have never delved into the Environment, but was chatting to the guys in the music store I go to, and they were saying there might be a way of setting up the specific MIDI routing I am looking for, in the Environment.
I would love any assistance you could give me. This has become such a frustration that I have even looked at moving back to Cubase (but the way it handles lots of tracks at low latency on Mac is stopping me, at the moment! The trial version showed this up as a real issue, compared to Logic!).
I am of course secretly hoping that Logic Pro 10 will have a re-thought MIDI setup, with simple in and out port drop-downs for each MIDI track. But that's a long shot, and Logic 10 could still be ages away!
Any help an experienced user can offer me would really be appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Mike

  • Logical port problem

    Hi All
I create logical port in LPCONFIG for a WS and i put the proxy class and logcal port (just variable like abc ) i choose defult port
and in runtime i choose webservice and in in call parameters in URL i put the WSDl of the WS i create via se37 .
when i activate it i get message : Web service requires state management
What i need to do to overcome this issue?
    Best Regards
    Nina

    Hi Nina,
    Purpose
The options for error handling depend on the type of communication chosen:
    ·        Asynchronous Communication: On the sender side, the application can only handle errors that occur when the message is being sent (for example,  the outbound queue is full). You can catch and persist these errors by using the exception class CX_AI_SYSTEM_FAULT. On the receiver side, as in the synchronous case, you can define fault messages, which are then only forwarded to monitoring (and not to the sender).
If you want to define how the sender is to process asynchronous errors, see the Acknowledgments section. The Web service runtime only supports synchronous communication.
    ·        Synchronous Communication: You can use fault messages to handle errors that have occurred on the receiver side. To confirm an error, the proxy runtime sends the fault message from the receiver back to the sender, which can then respond to it.
    Process Flow
The example used here works with the XI runtime standardized structure. When using the Web service runtime, follow the same procedure to trigger an exception on the receiver side and handle it on the sender side (indicated in the source text by the comments with a hash symbol (#)). The fault message structure is defined by the WSDL description in both cases and is found in the exception class.
        1.      If an application on the receiver side triggers an error, the ABAP proxy runtime converts the corresponding exception class to a fault message and transfers it to the sender system.
           2.      In the sender system, the ABAP proxy runtime interprets the fault message and triggers the exception for the client proxy.
           3.      In the sender system, the application can catch and handle the exception using a Try/Catch block. Using the super exception class CX_AI_APPLICATION_FAULT you can - in a similar way to the statement WHEN OTHERS in a CASE statement - catch all remaining application errors.

  • Which port number to use in remote site definition? [was:Help!]

I recently upgraded from Dreamweaver 8 to Dreamweaver cs6.  I'm having trouble accessing my website because I dont know which port to choose.  I never had to choose a port in Dreamweaver 8.  How does one decide which port to use?  Do you just keep picking random numbers until you get one that works?

Generally, the port next to your FTP address in the site definition will be 21 by default.
If that isn't working, you'll need to contact your hosting company to see if they use something else.

  • Change XML DB default HTTP port number from 8080 to ... ?

    Hi !
I need to change the default port number of XML DB from port 8080 to something else, because the development server also hosts a web service, which is configured to listen on port 8080 for debugging reasons. This WS is provided by our partner and we have no control over the ports it uses.
I'm not a network prof. so I'd like to ask what other port number would make sense for XML DB instead of 8080. Can I choose any port number I like, e.g. 8088?
Besides using DBCA is there any other place I need to configure this new port number?
    TIA,
    Stefan

I've done this on occasion using the OEM attach to the database and click XML Database then configuration, you will see it on the right window pane.

  • Acrobat 7: Warning 20225- Setup unable to create PDF Port Printer

I had to replace my computer and I am trying to install Acrobat 7 Pro on Windows 7. I read a comment that said it's not compatible, but others say it can work.  Since Adobe closed the activation server for CS2 & Acrobat 7, Adobe tech support gave me the link for the non-activating version of the exe file and new serial #. I was successful at installing CS2. Acrobat says the installation is successful and I am able to open Acrobat but at the end of install I got the Warning 20225: Setup unable to create a new item- Adobe PDF Port Printer. I tried to uninstall and change compatibility to XP, SP3 which is what my previous computer ran on, but still get same error every time. I don't use most the features of Acrobat so it doesn't make sense for me to buy a new version. Mostly, I just need to be able to print files to pdf (from Word, Illustrator, web). Any ideas of how to get this part working?

Thank you so much, Mylenium. I'm not sure if I'm setting up the printer right so please let me know where I am making errors.  I clicked "add a printer" and when it asks to choose a port, I left it as "use existiing port" and selected "File: Print to file". In the window to choose a printer, I clicked "Have Disk" and browsed to one of the .inf files (I ran a search in the Acrobat folder and found four .inf files shown below. I don't know which to use so tried each one)  but each time got the error message on the second screen shot below.
Do you know if there is a newer driver that is compatible with Windows 7?

  • ACS 4.2 - is it possible to change replication port?

    Hi,
trying to find out if it some tweek to change the ACS replication port TCP/2000 to something else.
I know it's possible to make a different policy-map or to not inspect the Skinny protocol to avoid conflict, but that not the solution I'm looking for. Wondering if anybody knows of a different way to change the replication port in ACS 4.2.

    Hi,
what is the version of ACS you are running?
If you are running ACS 4.2.1.15 then,
    Problem :

  • AIR-CAP702W local ethernet ports

    Hi all,
The new AIR-CAP702W AP have 4 10/100/1000Base-T local Ethernet ports.
On the data-sheet it's written "for wired devices connectivity".
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/wireless/aironet-700-series/data_sheet_c78-728968.html
That's very good, but how do we manage the traffic on these ports?
Are we able to configure theses ports in access-mode with different VLAN-IDs?
So in that case the uplink of the AP should be in trunk-mode.
And where do we configure the ports of the AP, on the WLC?
Or is the traffic from the devices connected into these ports encapsulated into CAPWAP tunnel, like the wireless data traffic, and is terminated into the WLC(s)?
In that case, can we choose what port is associated to what VLAN/SSID on the WLC?
    Or something else maybe?
    Thank you for your help.
    Jerome

The 4 x 10/100/1000BASE-T local Ethernet ports support half and full duplex mode, auto-negotiation, and MDI/MDIX Auto-Sensing. Devices you connect must support auto negotiation if you connect with another mode, say hard configured speed and so on. The port may not be enabled and depending on the version of code, for example 7.6.100.120 the initial release, the ports are not managed.
For now, (until more control is added in the software) all the LAN ports are locally switched, are mapped to the 702W VLAN, and do not appear on the Wireless LAN Controller or AP.
Initially, the ports are disabled and may be enabled manually via CLI.
This was done to minimize any security risks. Here are the CLI commands to enable the ports.
    (Cisco Controller)> config ap lan <port id> <enable/disable> <AP-NAME>
    (Cisco Controller)> show ap lan <port id> <AP-NAME>
    (Cisco Controller)> show ap lan port-summary <AP-NAME>
    Hope that helps.

  • CER Use port description as port location

    Hello all,
I am trying to confirm if this "feature" is as useless as I have found it to be. From my testing and what little documentation I can find when checking the "Use port description as port location" check box on the LAN switch details screen this will ONLY show you this information when looking at the switch port details screen. It DOES NOT actually use the switch port description as location information for the 911 call notifications.
My hope was that by checking this check box the switch port description would override the ALI location information configured within the ERL assigned to the switch port that the phone is connected to. This would allow the creation of one ERL/ALI per building say and the device specific room level information would simply come from the switch port description. With out this option a ERL/ALI has to be created for every room in the building.
    Thank you all.

There's absolutely no problem in choosing 8888 as admin port while installing IWS in solaris Environment. Just make sure u follow these steps while installation:
(1)You should choose a random number for the administration server to make it harder for anyone to breach your server.
    (2) Make sure the port you choose isn't in use. Look at the file /etc/services on the server machine to make sure you don't assign a port number that is reserved for another service. If you choose a port that is being used by another service, the installation program prompts you for another port.
(3)Note :If you choose a server port number lower than 1024, you must be logged in as root to start the server. After the server is bound to the port, the server changes from the root user account to the user account you specify. If you choose a port number greater than 1024, you don't have to be the root user to start the server.

  • Get AFP to listen to an additional port besides 548?

I've got two AFP servers in an office. The first server is 10.4.11 and the gateway is setup to forward port 548 to that. I've recently added a 10.6.3 Mini Server and would like to be able to access the afp shares from outside the office as well. While the router allows for port forwarding, it doesn't let me choose which port to forward to on the destination server. Is there a way to get the 10.6.3 server (or the 10.4.11) to listen for afp on an additional port?

    Hi
Why don't you tackle this another way and use VPN instead? Port Forwarding although useful can also be a dangerous practice. I would consider 'beefing up' all your passwords asap. There are many 'port knockers' looking to exploit the usual ports and port 548 is fairly well known.
    Just some friendly advice.
