Cifs.log filling up root

I am running into trouble because everey two weeks the space on the root partition by /var/log/cifs/*.
I know, the best way would be place the logs on a separate partition or disk. But I don't have this option at the moment.
So my question is:
How can I change the log level for cifs.log?
I wold also appreciate some other suggestions.

Novell Documentation
Enabling or Disabling the Debug Log (for Developers)
novcifs [-b yes|no | --enable-debug=yes|no]
Enabling or Disabling the Info Log

The key question is of course, what is it filling up with?

  • Unable to mount a network share drive in mac os 10.7 when logged in as root

I enabled the root account by entering sudo passwd root in the terminal window. Once the account was enabled successfully, I logged out from my admin account and logged in as root. I then attempted to mount a network share running on an Xserve and a Windows share but was unable to. I logged out as root and logged back in using my admin account and I was then able to mount both shares successfully.
Is there a new Lion security feature that prevents the root account from mounting network shares? If so how can I get around it?
    Thanks for your help.

I had the same problem. While logged in as root, I can't use an alias or Cmd+K to connect to a server, but it works fine as any other user. I tried the link above and after reading the mount_afp man page, it describes two steps needed to mount a server. Here's what I had to put in Terminal to mount a share called Installers:
The root account does not seem to be getting past the first step when using Cmd+K or an alias to a network share, although this worked in previous versions of OSX.
This problem was not fixed in 10.7.1

  • IWeb '08 works when logged-in as 'root' user

    Hi,
iWeb '08 converted my old sites and crashed. Since then, iWeb crashes when starting. I logged-out and logged-in as root, in this case iWeb can open my old sites. But, if I log-in again as usual (not root) then iWeb refuses to open my old sites... Any help?
    follow-up:
I changed the permissions of 'Domain.sites2' and then iWeb seems to open it and suddenly crashes again...

I had a similar permission error message when attempting to publish, that also said that the disk could be full. Turned out to be that I had a mp3 file name with an equals and / sign in it - must have been an illegal character? The old iWeb didn't choke on it for some reason...
Might not apply to you, but I hope this helps -

  • Logging in as root in Linux using UnixLoginModule

I am running an app on a Linux box where I am already logged in. I want to spawn a process that needs to run as root. I have tried to use UnixLoginModule to login as root :
            Subject subject = new Subject();
            subject.getPrincipals().add(new UnixPrincipal("root"));
            LoginContext loginContext = new LoginContext("Login", subject, new MyHandler());
loginContext.login();but my callback handler that would supply the password is never called and I don't appear to be logged in as root. It looks like UnixLoginModule simply returns data about the current user which is a fat lot of good. Does anyone know what I can do to make this thing do what it is supposed to do and allow me to perform a login? If JAAS is inadequate is there another way to acheive this?

  • WHY does "Apple Help" crash - unless I log in as Root User ?

After an archive and reinstall of Leopard following some serious permissions problems with configuration of the original install things are working pretty well again - - EXCEPT, that every time I as the user-administrator try to open "Apple Help" from the finder desktop, the blank app window opens and then crashes like clockwork before any text appears in the window.
If I log out and log in as root user, the Help app runs fine. This would seem to be a permissions issue, but I have just run permissions repair from the install CD on the boot volume and everything seems OK with both it and the file system.
Is there a way to get Help running again from my ordinary user account without another long and drawn out reinstall of the whole OS ?
Why does it run OK from the root account but not mine ?

I realize this question has been answered but I would like to add a little about permissions.
When a person does an Upgrade or Archive and Install saving user settings, the GID (group ID) is set at 501....
This is NOT really correct or the way it should be.
When a person does an Archive and Install without saving user settings or an Erase and Install, or they purchase a new computer with Leopard already on it, then the GID for the user is set at 20......
I have redone most of my installs so I now have the UID at 501 and the GID at 20 just the way it should be when you buy a new Mac.
Apple has come up with somewhat of a terminal fix but they still need to address more of these user permission problems.. Hopefully in the next update....
    Just for everyones reference.

  • Online redo logs fill-up due to long running SCM processes

    DB2 v9.7
    AIX v6.1 P570
    Running Standard SAP Code
Going live with SCM system running SNP/DP GATP how can we avoid having our online redo logs fill-up due to long running processes (i.e., CTM. Process Chains, BOP, DP Runs) Need to know SAP Best Practice regarding this -
Per our developers, BOP jobs performs commit when everything is processed and update table in one go at end, Hence not possible to perform commit regularly. Actually they will have to run BOP for 3200 material with 98000 sales order items.
But after just running BOP for 40 material with 22000 sales orders line items we are getting DBIF_RSQL_SQL_ERROR + CX_SY_OPEN_SQL_DB dumps
Any assistance on this would be helpful...
    Thanks -

Check OSS notes for this error. The BOP compponent has a steady stream of corrections developed by SAP especially in older releases.
Also make sure your Livecache Build is consistent with SCM Release/ Patch level.

  • Starting sunstudio without DISPLAY: ide.log fills up the disk

We had a user starting sunstudio from a terminal that didn't have DISPLAY set. I'd expect sunstudio to fail, like in the case when DISPLAY has a non-valid value, but no: The process goes into an infinite loop and the ide.log fills with exeception messages.
I guess this is a bug - but is it a known bug?
A search on sunsolve didn't give any match - except for an old bug where the command did exit silently (see http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=4917734).
    Regards,
    Bernd

I can't reproduce this problem with Sun Studio 12:
    $ unset DISPLAY
    $ sunstudio
/opt/12/SUNWspro/bin/sunstudio: ERROR: environment variable DISPLAY is not set
So even if there was such a bug, it has been fixed.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

It's some third-party software that you installed, but I can't be more specific. If you can't figure it out any other way, you'll just have to start uninstalling things until the log messages stop.

  • Best Practices: opmn/logs filling up disk

Has anyone experienced( I assume we all have this issue) with the logs in the $HTTP_SERVER_HOME/opmn/logs getting HUGE. I have APEX 3.0 installed on a UNIX box. Also I do not have a full install of Oracle AS, only the DB http server. What happens is that the logs fill up and the disk hits 100% so the HTTP server can't be started. We bring the DB and HTTP server down every evening and back up every morning(this is done with a scheduling tool that calls a couple of scripts) but it looks like it is only taking about half a day to fill up the logs(depends on the amount of activity on the different apps in APEX). Maybe this isn't the right place for this, if not I'll move it over to the other forums.
    Any thoughts/suggestions.
    Thanks,
    David

    Hi David,
That's an error message indicating that you're trying to run it on the same port as something else, take a look at the following thread -

I've tried googling and checked discussions here but can't find anything that seems to be related.
I don't think it's affecting my PB all that much but it is definitely not right and I would like to fix it.
Please let me know any information I might post that would help diagnose, etc...

I contacted technical support for Software-Systeme (what the company is not called Bresink as I posted earlier).
They replied promptly with what seems to be the answer…
    Hardware Monitor Support wrote:
The error message indicates that you have configured Hardware Monitor
to send its current readings to an external LCD display box. However,
this box appears to have a technical problem or you have no such device
connected. To switch this off, open "Preferences > LCD Module", select
the USB device and set "Configure for display type" to "No display".
This works for me and stops the logs filling with the messages. I'm not sure when I set the LCD display settings, but I imagine it was when I was learning what the settings do.
Just select the items in the top 'lcd module settings' table and set them to no display.

You subject states your master log keeps filling up, but the body of your post has nothing (directly) to do with the master log filling up soooo, could you provide a bit more detail of what's happening with your master database and any commands you've issued? [I'm wondering if you've left out some details of your actions which could help explain the message in your errorlog ... ???]
Do you have any threshold action stored procs firing in the master database and if so could you post (as a *txt attachment) the said proc(s)?

  • Logs filled up circular logging not working

hey. i have exchange 2010 with dag and logs filled up and shut down database.  i remove some logs according to old date then i turn on circular logging.  But still not logs shrinking but only growing.  i move more logs now.  how come
circular loggins not work?  i dismount and remount already.  thank you in advace.
    EC David

    EC,
Do you have time to just run a full backup?
The reason why the circular logging is not working is because you need to break the DAG.  Dismount the passive copy, remove the copy then dismount the active.  Once you remount the circular logging should work.  Once that is done you Or you
can just run a full backup if you have the time to let the logs truncate from that.  Either way you will have to run a backup.  Actually, why don't you just run a full backup?
Oh, if you go that route, don't forget to reseed the database.  I hope you can just do a full backup.

  • How do I log in as root user.

Adobe Acrobat Pro fix requires logging in as root user.  Instruction link only refers to OS X Lion and before, which does not work in Yosemite.

    Rednik55,,
Important: If you are not familiar with the meaning of "root user," read this entire article to learn important precautionary information before using the root user. You must have an administrator account and password to complete the steps below.
    About the root user
The user named "root" is a special user in UNIX-style operating systems that has read and write privileges to all areas of the file system. The root user should only be used for specific administration or monitoring tasks. After completing a task as the root user, you should log out of Mac OS X and log back in using a normal or administrator account. You should disable root access if you do not use it often.
The root user does not appear in Users or Accounts preferences.
    Important notes
Only the owner of a computer or its designated administrator(s) should have an administrator account or the root password.
Any user with an administrator account can become the root user or reset the root password.
A root password should be difficult to guess, containing both numbers and letters within the first eight characters.
A root user has the ability to access other users' files.
The root user has the ability to relocate or remove required system files and to introduce new files in locations that are protected from other users.
How to Enable the root user
From the Apple menu choose System Preferences....
From the View menu choose Users & Groups.
Click the lock and authenticate as an administrator account.
    Click Login Options....
Click the "Edit..." or "Join..." button at the bottom right.
Click the "Open Directory Utility..." button.
Click the lock in the Directory Utility window.
Enter an administrator account name and password, then click OK.
Choose Enable Root User from the Edit menu.
Enter the root password you wish to use in both the Password and Verify fields, then click OK.
How to Login as the root user
If you are logged in, choose Log Out from the Apple menu.
If you are logging in from a list of usernames with pictures, click Other.
In the Name field, type: root
In the Password field, type the password you defined in the steps above.
How to disable the root user
From the Apple menu choose System Preferences....
From the View menu choose Users & Groups.
Click on the lock and authenticate with an administrator account.
    Click Login Options....
Click the "Edit..." or "Join..." button at the bottom right
Click the "Open Directory Utility..." button.
Click the lock in the Directory Utility window.
Enter an administrator account name and password, then click OK.
Choose Disable Root User from the Edit menu.
Please be careful as the Root user. Once you are done make sure you disable it.

    Hi Amol,
    Thanks for replying.
I could not find the options u mentioned.
    I am on EP6 - sp2 and not NW04.
When i open the Visual Admin tool and go to
"Server - Services", i only see Log and Logviewer.
I also tried from within the Portal ie.
"Monitoring - Logging Console - Configuration Mode"
    Thanks,
    Morgan

  • [solved] "permission denied" even though I am logged in as root

Hi, I just installed Arch and now I am trying to add repositories to pacman.
I am currently logged in as root
    [root@arch ~]#
Now I am trying to access /etc/pacman.conf by typing
    /etc/pacman.conf
    wich returns
    -basch: /etc/pacman.conf: Permission denied
So I checked the forum and the wiki how to check permissions for files. found this wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/File_Permi … ermissions
    so I did
    # cd /etc
    # ls -l
    wich gave me
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2862 Jun 18 06:01 pacman.conf
If I read this correctly it says that "root" can read and write. But I am logged in as "root" so why can I not edit the file?
Last edited by ningfengrui (2013-08-21 09:50:17)

No problem at all & welcome to arch.
If you had not been so new, I would not of been this kind to you because the first result of a google search of  "basch: /etc/pacman.conf: Permission denied" would have given you the answer you needed
But hey! we all make the same mistake, but be sure to search for the answer before you ask here.
Also, you need to edit the title of your original post to read "[Solved]  "permission denied" even though I am logged in as root"
lecture over ! & again, welcome to arch
