Starting sunstudio without DISPLAY: ide.log fills up the disk

We had a user starting sunstudio from a terminal that didn't have DISPLAY set. I'd expect sunstudio to fail, like in the case when DISPLAY has a non-valid value, but no: The process goes into an infinite loop and the ide.log fills with exeception messages.
I guess this is a bug - but is it a known bug?
A search on sunsolve didn't give any match - except for an old bug where the command did exit silently (see http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=4917734).
Regards,
Bernd

I can't reproduce this problem with Sun Studio 12:
$ unset DISPLAY
$ sunstudio
/opt/12/SUNWspro/bin/sunstudio: ERROR: environment variable DISPLAY is not set
So even if there was such a bug, it has been fixed.

    2. You can increase the redo logfile size.Currently its around 48MB, incresae it to 100MB.While he probably should increase his redo log size, that will have zero impact on the amount of disk space consumed by the archivelog files. If the OP is generating 1gb/min of redo, he will consume 1gb/min of disk space for archivelogs. It may be with 1 ea. 4gb file every 4 minutes or 1 ea. 256mb files every 15 seconds, but it still comes out the same in the end. Redo file size influences how often a log switch occurs and the size of the individual archivelog files, but it has no bearing on the amount of redo that has to be archived over a given period.

  • SATA driver flooding System.log, filling up startup disk

My system.log seems to be filling up with SATA error messages, about 10 per second. The log is now so large that I can't even get the Console app to open it (only in Open Quick, which seems to show little snippets of the log only).
This seems to have started when I installed an Initio 1623 SATA controller as part of a GraniteDigital drive upgrade. The controller worked, the drives worked. I've since pulled the controller card, but it seems the driver continues to flood the log file!
The drivers for the controller are apparently built in to OSX (at least in 10.4.7...) so there is no way to update the driver separately.
Restarting the machine hasn't helped. For now, I have to keep moving files to other disks to keep this G5 functioning.
How can I A) delete the log file to gain some time?
    B) make this error stop?
    Thanks.

Well - maybe it isn't a SATA driver system.log. I can't read the system.log because it keeps refreshing so the data in on the screen for less than a second before it refreshes. AND there is so much disk thashing that the system is barely responsive.
The only visible log entries are:
Jul 19 04:28:10 Platinum kernel[0]: Inic1622: SATA - Int no command active (repeated about ten times)
    Jul 19 04:28:10 Platinum kernel[0]: and active
    and repeat....
The log file is showing a size of 4.5 GB

  • How do you reset a forgotten/lost password on a Mac mini computer without having an Apple ID or the disk?

Unable to login to the administrator username and password on the computer

Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar. In the Terminal window, type this: resetpassword That's one word with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window opens. Select your boot volume if not already selected. Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected. Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9. Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar

  • Need to switch user profiles without having to log out and log back in. i.e.: personal / work computer profiles

I'd like to not have to log out of personal profile and have to log into work profile and vice versa. Looking for way to just switch between the two on my Mac. Any help is appreciated!

You need to enable Fast User Switching. Follow the instructions on this page, they are for Mavericks but the instructions are the same,
OS X Mavericks: Switch quickly between users
Once enabled you will have a Fast User Switching menu on the right side of the menu bar that will allow you to select which account you want to log in to without having to log out of the account you are currently logged in to.

    MacBook 13" white - Early 2009 model

Oh, createinstallmedia only runs on OS 10.9!  Oh!  The 9999 is if you try to run it on an earlier OS!  Oh! Linc means to update the current drive to Mavericks, and then one will be able to run createinstallmedia, if one has first saved away a copy of the installer.
But if, like me, you are trying to create an installer to do a clean install on an empty drive, without replacing the earlier OS on your current drive, then...
You must use the slightly more complicated instructions you can find all over the place that look like
Right click "Install OS X Mavericks.app" and show package contents
Find a certain .dmg file and double click
Find a hidden .dmg within the drive that mounts from the first .dmg
Double-click or use "mount" on the hidden .dmg within the .dmg
Use Disk Utility to "restore" the second disk image onto the erased USB drive
Then replace an alias folder with a copy of a huge folder within the first disk image
I had success with the "Option 2: Use Disk Utility" section here.

Oh, ok. That changes my answer completely. The problem here is that Shawmail's webmail interface isn't made to work correctly with the iPad. Gmail works because Google made sure it works. You need to contact Shaw and ask them to correct this. In the meantime, set up your Shawmail account in the native Mail app on the iPad. Do this by going to Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars and take it from there.

Logged into the console and started sunstudio. It started correctly in a window which code be moved and resized and closed.
Logged into the same node using remotely starting e.g. a xterm or dtterm. In this terminal started sunstudio which were started with the tool bar and so on, but there is no window frame. Hence the IDE window can't be moved, resized etc.
Does anyone have any hints forward ?
    Rgds Peter

The problem I apparently had was I used Reflection to connect from my PC to the node where my home directory is located using a REXEC connection starting a dtterm on that node and from there I made a TELNET connection to the Solaris node.
I now made a new connection directly from my PC using Reflection but with a TELNET session starting a dtterm on the Solaris node.
Now I have the frame and top bar.

I purchased my iMac used.  When I try to update apps in AppStore, the computer automatically fills in the previous owner's email address and it won't let me delete it to enter mine.  I have been using my own apple ID and password on this computer for other things without a problem.  Any ideas?

Before buying a second-hand computer, you should have run Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, whichever is applicable.
The first thing to do after buying the computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You—not the original owner—must do that. Changes made by Apple over the years have made this seemingly straightforward task very complex.
How you go about it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
It's unsafe, and may be unlawful, to use a computer with software installed by a previous owner.
    1. If you don't own another Mac
    a. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller—not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine is very old and has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
    b. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for a MacBook Air. You should have received the media from the original owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To start up from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then restart the computer and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
    c. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should start up in Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
    d. Some 2010-2011 models shipped with OS X 10.6 and received a firmware update after 10.7 was released, enabling them to use Internet Recovery. If you have one of those models, you can't reinstall 10.6 even from the original media, and Internet Recovery will not work either without the original owner's Apple ID. In that case, contact Apple Support, or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to have the OS installed.
    2. If you do own another Mac
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to prepare a USB device, then start up the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can start from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
    3. Partition and install OS X
    a. If you see a lock screen when trying to start up from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
    b. Launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive—not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the  Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
    c. An unusual problem may arise if all the following conditions apply:
OS X 10.7 or later was installed by the previous owner
The startup volume was encrypted with FileVault
You're booted in Recovery mode (that is, not from a 10.6 installation disc)
In that case, you won't be able to unlock the volume or partition the drive without the FileVault password. Ask for guidance or see this discussion.
    d. After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. If you're installing a version of OS X acquired from the App Store, you will need the Apple ID and password that you used. When the installation is done, the system will automatically restart into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
    e. Run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the original owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed—you have to repurchase them.
    4. Other issues
    a. If the original owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're irrevocably linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
    b. If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to  authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.
    c. When trying to create a new iCloud account, you might get a failure message: "Account limit reached." Apple imposes a lifetime limit of three iCloud account setups per device. Erasing the device does not reset the limit. You can still use an iCloud account that was created on another device, but you won't be able to create a new one. Contact iCloud Support for more information. The setup limit doesn't apply to Apple ID accounts used for other services, such as the iTunes and Mac App Stores, or iMessage. You can create as many of those accounts as you like.

    Workaround 1:
"Simple workaround is to disable registration using command line option -J-Dnb.registration.enabled=false"
    Workaround 2:
"The file ~/.netbeans-registration/6.5/registration.xml is empty, so I have this file erased and restarted the IDE.
After this step, the file was not regenerated, but the IDe starts now without this problem."
    Please, try one of them.
    Thanks,
    Nik
