Clarifying terminology: Source, Staging, Target, Mapping, Target Mapping?

I'm new to ETL and I find the terminology in the literature to be confusing. I'm just trying to get a basic outline of the flow of data.
I can't acurately distinguish between the following terms that are used and the order that they come in the overall data mapping and deployment process:
1) Source table
2) Staging table
3) Target table
4) Mapping table
5) Target Mapping table
Are some of these terms interchangeable? Can a table share more than one of these terms? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi John,
When you make a mapping in staging Area (will be used to cleanse tables used in mapping), OWB create also a table according to the mapping. Example: you have a source table xx, you make some transormtion if necessary and filteing the output. Than put it instaging table xx_STG.
In he next step you integrate the staging tables for example in one able calles xx_Target. The target can be also the relational table, without any Dimension and Cubs on it. If the validation is ok, dann you can deploy the tables and mappings from taget schema. OWB created PL/sql scripts.
Dont forget to first deploy the tables from target schema.
Also you must register the source location in Control Center.
Hope this info. help you a littel bit.

  • How to use :Execution On :Source/Staging/Target

    Hi,
    In Interface
If we set 'Staging Area Differnt From Target' with Target Schema Name then
In Diagram Target Columns should map with source columns and what about
    Execution On :Source/Staging/Target???
What is the relation between 'Staging Area Differnt From Target' in Definition Tab and Execution On :Source/Staging/Target in Diagram Tab.
    Need advice on it.
    Thanks
    Ashwini

    Hi Ashwini,
    Trying to help you,
The bottom line of Staging Area is all the temporary $ tables (c$,i$,e$...) tables will be created in that area only. So its always advisable to do the transformation in Staging area.
In your case, as you are exporting Teradata to File, so you cant do any transformation in Target ( as its a file techno), so select (always) staging to execute transformation if any.
If you don't have any transformation and its just a simple export then select Source to Execute.
    Thanks,

  • Searching a Field In Source or Target Message in Message Mapping

    Hey Guys,
I  came accross this peculiar behaviour and it keeps bugging me , I could search any field in source or target message in message mapping in PI 7.0 by copying the path( /ns1:MaestroAcreedores/Acreedores/ClaveDeGrupo or any idoc field /FIDCCP02/IDOC/E1FIKPF/BUDAT  ) but in PI 7.1 i cant , its giving me an error String /ns1:MaestroAcreedores/Acreedores/ClaveDeGrupo not found  , i can only search the field independently. Can anyone please help me out in this.

    Hi
I am not sure whether it worked in 7.0 or not, but having checked myself i can confirm that it is not working in 7.1 in my system also.
For alternative, you can check by changing into source text view where it will display as xml.  Here when you search the keyword, it would display you the hierarchy better than normal view.
I dont think there is any other alternative. although I would say in the worst case scenario you would not have more than 10-15 occurrences of same element in an idoc.

  • Issue in mapping the same source and target fields

    Hi All,
I am working on PI 7.0 and currently I am connecting to PI 7.0 via citrix desktop . Problem here is : in the mapping , direct mapping option that is available to map the same source and target fields is disabled . I do know that this is due to some java version issue .
What I want to know is there any possibilty of solving this issue without installing an updated java version ?
    Regards
    Vinay P.

I've faced the same for many times and all of that were due to Java version.
1st of all, you have to check the authorizations you have. If you have enough (DEVELOPER_J2EE, CONTENT_ORGANIZER_J2EE, and so), and - obvious but very often forgotten - you have to assure you're trying to change it in the message mapping change mode On.
Then, last shot should be downgrade your Java version.
The 1.4.2 JRE version allow you to use not only the Mapp the Identical field but also Dependencies, Clear Mapping and some other tools/buttons. As mentioned above, if there's a fix in the new Java releases, I do not know (hope so) and would appreciate if you could let us know.
    Tks.

  • Different mapping programs for same source and target

    Hi All,
I have to map the incoming idoc to xml messages.
But based on customer numbers in incoming idoc i have to use different mapping programs and map to same xml messages.
    1 source message     - n mapping programs       - 1 target message
                                    (based on cust numbers)
I dont want to harcode the customer numbers to find out the mapping programs.
Can anyone guide me in this on how to achieve this functionality...
    thanks

    Hi,
have you tried to use Conditions in the Interface Determination?
You can add multiple lines in the 'Configured Inbound Interfaces' and attach different mappings to each of them by picking a condition (basically using an XPath Expression).
    Check this Help Document,
the section 'Multiple Identical Inbound Interfaces with Conditions' describes what I believe is your scenario.<a href="http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04s/helpdata/en/42/ea20e737f33ee9e10000000a1553f7/frameset.htm">Multiple Identical Inbound Interfaces with Conditions</a>

  • No mapping for Same structure in source and target

    Hi Experts,
I want to transfer the source structure to two receivers . Here source and target structures are same so i dont need mapping.
My question is how many DT,MT and MI required .. mapping required or not.
    Thanks in Advance
    CS

    hi  CS,
here in  your  scenario as  u  have  told  that  source  and reciver  are of  same  structure . definitely you didn't need  any  mapping . and you have to create two data type(one for sender and  one for receiver) , two message  types(one for sender and one for receiver)) , and  two message  interfaces(one for sender and one for receiver).
while creating message types it asks for data  type and while creating message interface it asks for message type only . as the structures of sender and receiver are same then inspite of having two receivers  we  have to create  ony one message interface on sender side . later the adapter will take  care of further proceedings
but  in  case of configuration you have to import three business systems . one for sender and  two for receiver systems . and  you have to configure the communications  channels  accordingly. as per the receivers accepting the structures you have to use the relevant adaptors .

I also tried to Import a MSI file from our test environment to see if that would work...got the same errors.  After spending hours (not kidding) looking for an answer, all I could find is that a hotfix would work.  So, I got the hotfix from Microsoft
Support and applied it then rebooted.  Still getting the same errors.  I'm absolutely at a stand still.  Interesting that I got this application to deploy yesterday and then the next time I deployed it I started getting these errors.  I'm
ready to pull my hair out!
Is there an answer for this out there somewhere?  Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dave

    Hi Dave,
Which hotfix have you applied? I don't think a hotfix of this issue is available for BizTalk 2013 yet. You should create a
support ticket with Microsoft to get a solution.

  • Is it possible to have source and target schema in the same DB instance ?

    Hi All,
    I'm using Oracle 11gR1.
I have switched source locations from other server to the one with OWB.
During deploy I get VLD-3064 and I can't deploy mapping because of many 'table or view does not exist' warnings.
Is it possible to have source and target schemas in the same instance ??
    How to do it ?
    Regards,
    Martin

    Hi Jörg,
Thanks for your help and quick answer.
I'd like to clarify a little your answer :
    1. Are the any special privilages I need to set ? Currently I have only 'RESOURCE' and 'CONNECT' (I think I didn't have to add any other privs when that schema was located on other instance...)
    2. Also VLD-3064 states that : 'Owning and referenced location of this connector are on the same database instance. Unless explicitly referenced in configuration settings no generated code will use the dataabase link resulting from deployment of this connector'. Does it mean I have to put something in configuration ?
    Thanks,
    Martin

  • GG configuration - Changes are not replicating from Source to Target

    Hi,
I am new in golden gate configuration. I have set up GG between two oracle databases to replicate the changes from source to target database.
But when I update or insert in HR.JOBS table in source, it is not propagating to target. I didn't find any error in error log.
Could you please help me to suggest the configuration I did wrong here?

  • VLD-6328 error : Use a flat file as Source in a mapping in OWB 10.2

    Dear all,
I have created a simple mapping using a flat file in a remote server as a source and a simple table as a target.
When I try to validate the mapping I get the following warning:
"VLD-2398: No data file specified. Generated code will use the sampled file name and the file location xxx"
I use the version 10.2 and I cannot find "Sources" or "Targets" when I use the "Configure" options.
    Any help will be appreciated

    Hi all,
If you want to validate correctly this mapping you must to :
    1. Right click on the mapping, then Configure
    2. Right click on Sql Loader Data Files, then Create
    3. Verify that the location name is correct and complete the Data File Name
    4. OK
    The validation is now OK.
I hope it will be help you
    Best Regards
    Samy

  • Flat File as Source in OWB Mapping.

    Hi All,
    Configuration Details is as follows:
Oracle 9i Warehouse Builder Client: 9.2.0.2.8
Oracle 9i Warehouse Builder Repository: 9.2.0.2.0
    Windows XP Professional
I developed a mapping which involves a flat file as source & Oracle Table as target steps followed were as follows.
    1. Created Flat File module, selected Connector & Location Details.
    2. Done mapping for source file & target table.
    3. Validated & Generated the mappings.
    4. Deployed the mapping in Deployment Manager.
    5. Following was Error Message after execution of the mapping.
    Completion Status: Completed with errors.
Meesage Log: Starting Execution of VHM_MAP2. Starting Task VHM_MAP2. RPE-01013:SQL Loader reported error condition, number 4. Completing Task VHM_MAP2.
Following was Control File generated by the above mapping.
    OPTIONS ( ERRORS=50, BINDSIZE=50000, ROWS=200, READSIZE=65536)
    LOAD DATA
    CHARACTERSET WE8MSWIN1252
    INFILE '{{TEXT_DATA_LOCATION.RootPath}}dept.txt'
    BADFILE '{{TEXT_DATA_LOCATION.RootPath}}dept.bad'
    DISCARDFILE '{{TEXT_DATA_LOCATION.RootPath}}dept.discard'
    INTO TABLE "{{TARGET_LOCATION.Schema}}"."DEPT"
    APPEND
    REENABLE DISABLED_CONSTRAINTS
    FIELDS
    TERMINATED BY ','
    OPTIONALLY ENCLOSED BY '"'
"DEPTNO" POSITION (1) INTEGER EXTERNAL ,
    "DNAME" CHAR ,
    "LOC" CHAR
Please note that no message is displayed in Row Activity & output parameters in Deployment Manager.
I worked on lower version of the OWB & in that version there was no concept of Location, Connector, Deployment Manager.
Not sure why the above mapping is failing?
Also I would like to know where can I get more information about the mapping errors which are different from oracle error messages.
e.g. In above case error message is RPE-01013: SQL Loader reported error condition, number 4 .
    Thanks in Advance.
    Regards,
    Vidyanand

    Hi

  • LSMW Source and Field Mapping

    Hi,
I'm trying to use the LSMW.  What is the fastest way to maintain the source field and relationship?? Is it possible to define the source field and length in a text file and load it in the LSMW??
    Regards,
    Kit

    Hi Kit,
u can create source fields in faster way.
    menupath
In the 3rd step i.e., Maintain source fields
    source fields -> table maintenance
here u can fill all the fields at a time.
u can also maintain the fields in a file and copy and paste them in the Table maintenance .
In 5th step i.e.,  Maintain Field Mapping and Conversion Rules
    Extras -> Auto field Mapping
Now u get the auto field mapping setting pop-up.
    click ok.
Now u Get the auto field mapping proposel pop-up.
Here check Target field and Source field and click on Accept proposel push button for all the fields.
with this the source and target field mapping are done automatically.
    reward if helpfull

  • Keeping table name same in source and target

is it possible to keep the table name the same in source and target (they're on sepearte databases). Seems like OWB wants to rename the output table (usually adds 1 on the end). When I tried to rename I got a message saying that table name exists.

    In my mapping.
First I defined a source and a target. The table on the target doesn't exist yet.
I open mapping editor...drag the table from my source. Let's call it TABLE_A. Then I add Table operator to the mapping (choose create unbound operator with no attributes option). For the name I choose TABLE_A...however when I click OK it then changes the name to TABLE_A_1.
So I double click on the table and change the name to TABLE_A and then I get the message that the table already exists.
