Classes involved in generating a servlet from a jsp

does anyone know how the servlet is generated by reading a jsp file. Can it be possible to
convert the jsp file in a DOM object and then applying a predefined template thru an XSLT to
generate the servlet file ..... what are the other considerations that usually goes in the
process of developing a servlet out of a jsp page can the same procedure if i am right be
used to generate the code for other technologies like EJB's and other templates .. kindly
reply back as this is urgent
thanks in advance

I know this answer isn't very useful, but the answer is "it depends." I.e. it depends on the app server. Tomcat, Weblogic, etc. do the translation differently. JSP/JSTL only define interfaces. If you want to see what your app server generates, there's usually a way to have the app server keep around the generated Java servlet code instead of deleting the file (as most app servers do by default). For example, with weblogic, make a weblogic.xml file (in the WEB-INF directory of the WAR) like this:
<weblogic-web-app>
<jsp-descriptor>
<jsp-param>
<param-name>keepgenerated</param-name>
<param-value>true</param-value>
</jsp-param>
</jsp-descriptor>
</weblogic-web-app>
You can learn alot from looking at this file, including finding subtle errors in your JSP when the error messages are absolutely no help at all (which happens disgustingly often).

  • Calling a servlet from a JSP page using the J2EE reference implementation

    I have a JSP with an include tag as follows: <jsp:include page="servlet/ConnectionServlet" flush="true" />
    When I use JRUN it works fine. I created an ear file and ported
    the application to the J2EE reference implementation. When running the app under the J2EE reference implementation the ConnectionServlet is never called. I figured it must a deployment issue. I tried adding the ConnectionServlet.class file to the WEB-INF\classes file as servlet\ConnectionServlet.class but the JSP still can't find the servlet. Any ideas where I've gone wrong? TIA, Joe

    I have a JSP with an include tag as follows:
    <jsp:include page="servlet/ConnectionServlet"
    flush="true" />Basically, WEB-INF/classes gets added to the classpath, so the directory structure under this folder should be identical to your package structure. If the ConnectionServlet.class is not actually in a package, then it should be directly in WEB-INF/classes (ie if "servlet" isn't actually the name of your package, don't use a WEB-INF/classes/servlet/" directory).
    Then try taking out the "servlet" from your include tag, so you just have page="/ConnectionServlet" (not sure about the leading slash - try experimenting!)
    if this doesn't work, try adding this to your WEB-INF/web.xml file:
    <web-app><!-- the web-app tags may already be there - don't add more -->
    <servlet>
    <servlet-name>ConnectionServlet</servlet-name>
    <servlet-class>your.full.package.here.ConnectionServlet</servlet-class>
    </servlet>
    <servlet-mapping>
    <servlet-name>ConnectionServlet</servlet-name>
    <url-pattern>/ConnectionServlet</url-pattern>
    </servlet-mapping>
    </web-app>
    Good Luck!

  • Calling a Servlet from a JSP within Portal Portlet

    We've created a JSP that calls a Servlet when the form is submitted. The servlet handles the request, does some basic processing and then forwards back to a JSP. This works fine outside of Portal.
    What needs to be done in order for this to work within a portlet in Portal? We can get to the first JSP which is in a portlet, but as soon as we click the submit button (which tries to call the servlet) we get the basic page not found error. We need to click the button, go to the servlet and have the servlet forward back to our portlet.
    I know this is not the ideal way of using Portal however...
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    I was wondering is there any way I can call a servlet from jsp? There are two scenarios here
    1 - if the jsp is currently being executed/evaluated on the server, then you can use <jsp:include> to "call" a servlet, or <jsp:forward> to cancel the jsp and transfer the control to the servlet.
    2 - if the page is already loaded and running in the client, then the only way to call a servlet is making a HTTP request as from any other html page. Jave code does not execute on the client, so you have to use html/javascript at that point.
    Calling a servlet within another servlet.
    lets say one servlet maintains all dynamic html. I call this servlet from another servlet to create a dynamic page and then insert values into it.Close, but the standard pattern is the reverse of that. What normally happens is you retrieve the values to put in the page, and then call the page, passing in those values. Thats why often you get a servlet/actionbean getting called, which then forwards to a JSP to display the result. The servlet/bean loads all the values required into scope, and then the JSP presents the data.

  • Calling servlets from a jsp in a directory

    Hello,
    I use JBuilder 9 to develop a web application, and I organize all jsp files in directories inside root directory. The problem is that when I try to use any servlet in the project, I have to use the following address "http://localhost8080/servletName" and it worked fine, but when I run the application on another machine that has port 8083 for JBuilder it didn't work of course. So is there a generic address that I can use that can work with any port?
    Sorry for the long message,
    Thanks,

    yes, but when I use the relative name of the servlet, I get an error saying that the servlet is not found inside the directory in which the jsp(the one from which I call the servlet) exists. For some reason the program searches for the servlet in the same directory and of course doesn't find it. What do you think I can do about this?
    Thanks,

    If the server does not wish to make this information available to the client, the status code 403 (Forbidden) can be used instead. The 410 (Gone) status code SHOULD be used if the server knows, through some internally configurable mechanism, that an old resource is permanently unavailable and has no forwarding address.

    Thankyou for any help at all on this one.

    Shaun,
    Nice to know that you find a way that works. However, what Zsolt suggests should work; otherwise, it is a bug. That is, put the servlet definition and servlet mapping in your web.xml and then you should be able to access http://host:port/myWebContext/servlet/CreateSPSS?myParmName=myParm without seeing a response like "No resource found". Please make sure that your servlet definition come before the corresponding servlet mapping.

    Hi Folks,
    I need set a servlet that produces an image output as source for an "img" tag in a jsp. I found several examples how this should be done with a simple webapp and these examples work right away in a simple tomcat environment.
    But BEA Portals are not comparable with simple webapps in combination with tomcat. The URLs for example are rendered in a special way, for example:
    http://localhost:7001/MyWebApp/My.portal?_nfpb=true&portlet_27_1_actionOverride=/portlets/Level1/aPortal/portalPage&portlet_27_1do_action=null
    My Problem:
    When I try to refer to my servlet like this
    img src="/servlet/ImageRenderServlet"
    The image is not rendered because the URL is not rendered. Even when I leave away the leading "/" of the servlet it becomes:
    http://localhost:7001/MyWebApp/servlet/ImageRenderServlet
    So whats the trick when referencing servlets from a jsp that belongs to a BEA Portlet?

  • Very urgent: call servlet from JSP

    Hello,
    I'm facing a problem in invoking a servlet from a JSP having the JSF components.
    The application has a text field to implement ajax for search functionality in the database .I have written a servlet to make the database connection and fire the querry.
    Ajax implementation in a js file is called on every keyup event in the jsp file,and
    a call is given to the servlet from the ajax methode.
    The function in the js file is as follows:-
    function getPersonByFirstNameXML( firstName ) {
        if (!firstName) {
            clearPersonByFirstNameXML();
        } else {
            var url = BASE_URL + "/servlet/get_PersonsXML";
            alert(url);
            return new AJAXRequest("post", url, "firstName=" + encode(firstName), processGetPersonByFirstNameXML);
    }Im getting the myAJAX.status value as 500.
    I think I'm not able to access the servlet properly.
    what changes do i need to make in the we.xml file ?
    and what should be the url to be passed.
    Please provide me a sloution to the above problem as it is very urgent else if anybody is aware of a readymade JSF componet with search functionality freely available please let me know.
    PS:
    The sample application named RedirectionExample which makes use of a servlet and would be of help to you. You can find the tutorial on the following page:
    http://developers.sun.com/prodtech/javatools/jscreator/reference/codesamples/sampleapps.html
    is not available as stated in some of the suggestions by Author: mayagiri
    Thanks for any help.
    Abhi

    the status 500 generally means either HTTP server internal error or that execution of CGI script or servlet aborted with error.
    It can be reasonably supposed that the request reaches the servlet, ie. that "url" value points to some existing servlet, otherwise most probably the status value would be 404.
    To test that the servlet is working i'd try to access it using some simple html page with form like this (with {BASE_URL} replaced by real value):
    <form method=post action={BASE_URL}/servlet/get_PersonsXML>
    <input type=text name=firstName>
    <input type=Submit>
    </form>

  • Maintain session when calling servlet from form in a JSP

    I have the following set up:
    index.jsp calls login servlet from the action tag in a form.
    Login servlet handles the login, stores the user info and db connection in the session and uses forward(req,res) to call another jsp.
    That jsp has a form where user enters search info and in that form's action tag there is a search servlet. In the search servlet I am unable to access the session.
    Is there any way to pass the session to the servlet from that jsp using a form/action?

    I've read elsewhere that if you go from a jsp to a servlet that the >request object is cleared of any attributes from the previous request.which is correct. But arent we speaking about session object here? A request object is valid for a request - ie the phase from where the server receieves a hit for a resource upto the point it sends the output for that request.
    A session spans multiple requests.
    it doesn't retrieve the session info and gives me a null pointer >exception when I try to use the connection object stored in the session.Bad bad bad . Why do you store Connection objects in session? Create them when necessary or use a connection pool. Do you for example clean up the connections when the session expires. What if its a 30 minute session and the user hits every say 15 minutes with a request. Why do you need to hold on to the Connection in the intervening interval when the user's session is inactive?
    gives me a null pointer exception when I try to use the connection object stored in the session.which means that the Connection object is null - not the session object.
    That last line is where I get the null pointer exception. And that is
    Statement stmt = con.createStatement();?
    Same answer as above.
    If the session object was null,
    userSession.getAttribute("connection");would have thrown a NPE.

    Added "/servlet/" to the start of the include name -- that fixed it. Now, however, I can't seem to get oc4j to find my beans (located in the same hierarchy). Using <jsp:usebean...> syntax, the usebean statment seems to get processed, but accessing the bean through it's id yields:
    Syntax error in source
    /mapsis/contacts4_mockup.jsp.java:30: Undefined variable or class name: <bean id>
    I'll try messing w/ the syntax, but thanks in advance for any ideas.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
    Is your bean part of a package ?
    Here is an example
    <%@ page import="java.sql.* , oracle.jsp.dbutil.*" %>
    <jsp:useBean id="cbean" class="oracle.jsp.dbutil.ConnBean" scope="session">
    <jsp:setProperty name="cbean" property="User" value="scott"/>
    <jsp:setProperty name="cbean" property="Password" value="tiger"/>
    <jsp:setProperty name="cbean" property="URL" value="jdbc:oracle:thin:@dlsun:1521:P817"/>
    <jsp:setProperty name="cbean" property="PreFetch" value="5"/>
    <jsp:setProperty name="cbean" property="StmtCacheSize" value="2"/>
    </jsp:useBean>
    Hope this helps.. sorry for the delay in replying..

    hi
    to enable u to see your codes more clearly, i would suggest that u separate ur docs into JSP and servlet.
    this allows u to correct ur errors easily too.
    cos currently i am usin both JSP and servlet too.
    u just need to call ur servlet from ur JSP page..
    btw both JSP and servlet can be used for designin websites.. but usin JSP might be easier..
    wonder if the above helps..
    regards

  • How to reference a DatabaseHandler servlet class from a jsp file in Tomcat

    Trying to create a database connection in the jsp file in webapps\project folder by referencing the DatabaseHandler class in webapps\project\WEB-INF\classes.
    Here is the code in the jsp to make the connection:
    DatabaseHandler db = new DatabaseHandler() ;
    String sql = "SELECT password FROM cms_users WHERE user =" + userName ;
    java.sql.ResultSet rs = db . selectQuery( sql ) ;
    Here is the DatabaseHandler class:
    import java.sql.*;
    public class DatabaseHandler
         // instance variables - replace the example below with your own
    private Connection connection;
         * Constructor for objects of class DatabaseHandler
         public DatabaseHandler()
    String url = "jdbc:odbc:javadatabase";
    // Load the driver to allow connection to the database
    try
    Class.forName( "sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver" );
    connection = DriverManager.getConnection( url );
    catch ( ClassNotFoundException cnfex )
    System.err.println( "Failed to load JDBC/ODBC driver." );
    cnfex.printStackTrace();
    System.exit( 1 ); // terminate program
    catch ( SQLException sqlex )
    System.err.println( "Unable to connect" );
    sqlex.printStackTrace();
    public ResultSet selectQuery( String query )
    Statement statement;
    ResultSet resultSet = null ;
    try
    statement = connection.createStatement();
    resultSet = statement.executeQuery( query );
    catch ( SQLException sqlex )
    sqlex.printStackTrace();
    System . exit( 1 ) ;
    return resultSet ;
    Here is the error i am getting when i try to run the jsp script:
    HTTP Status 500 -
    type Exception report
    message
    description The server encountered an internal error () that prevented it from fulfilling this request.
    exception

    Just like in the class file you need to import any classes that you want to access in the JSP.
