Classic Printing Wierdness

Hi all,
I am encountering several very strange problems when I try to print from Classic. I'll be as detailed as I can, so bear with me.
1. Chosen printers do not stay chosen from one Classic restart to the next. Whenever I restart classic, there is no printer chosen by default.
2. The problem stated in #1 above only affects some Classic apps. I can start classic and run Claris Draw (for example) without ever choosing a printer and when I try to print something, I see an OS 9 dialog that includes a printer pick list and both of my printers are listed in it even if they are not listed in the Chooser (and one of the two is definitely NOT listed in the Chooser). If I select one from Claris Draw and print, it seems to take a few seconds longer than printing from OS X, but it prints just fine.
3. On the other hand, if I try printing without ever touching the Chooser from another app, namely Managing Your Money 7.2 (by the way, both Claris Draw and MYM are vintage 1997 apps), I get an error message saying "This printer cannot print because this application is not Apple Event aware and you have not installed Desktop Print 2.0 software." I don't even remember what Desktop Print 2.0 software is. But I know I have a boatload of extensions in my "Extensions Disabled" folder in my Classic system folder. If it is in there and I can reenable it, I hope someone can tell me how. But I really think this error message is not getting at the root of the problem.
4. For one of my printers, an HP OfficeJet 7310 All in One, I have OS 9 drivers in the Classic system folder. I have a printer option that shows up in the Chooser called "hp aio print". If I open Classic and then choose this printer before printing, Claris Draw still prints fine, although the print dialog that I get is now specific to the OfficeJet 7310 and has far fewer options. When I try to print from MYM after choosing "hp aio print", I get the exact same print dialog as in Claris Draw, but when I say OK, I see the job spooling and then an error dialog from the OS 9 Print Spooler is shown saying something like "Not enough memory to print this document. Try closing other applications and printing again." Of course, at this point, MYM is the only Classic app I have open and as I said, I only have the bare essential Classic extensions. Furthermore, in Classic, the Memory control panel is not supported, so it's not like I can go and allocate more memory to the Print Spooler.
So is this a real shortcoming of MYM or is it a Classic configuration problem? When I was able to run MYM under native OS 9, I printed all the time. To be honest, I don't recall if I have ever printed from it under Classic and I doubt that I have since getting my HP printer or my iMac G5. But one thing is certain, I can't print from it now under Classic.
I have emailed HP about this and am still waiting for an answer, but any advice would be greatly appreciated.
By the way, I already know that I can print to a PDF or postscript file and then open it in OS X and print it from there. In fact, that is what I have been doing as a workaround since discovering this problem.
Sincere thanks ahead of time,
Bill

Thanks B3av1s. I bumped the memory requirements for Print Monitor, MYM, and Chooser all by a factor of 10 (which is easy to do these days without evening putting a dent in your available RAM). I initially had similar troubles (without the memory errors) but I just now tried again since I had more time and to my surprise, I was able to print a 13-page job from MYM without error.
Otherwise, all of the other weirdness (by the way, please forgive the misspelling of weirdness in the title) is still there. Printers Chosen do not stay Chosen and if I do not explicitly Choose the "hp aio print" printer each time I start Classic, I get all of the errors I described before.
But at least this partially solved the problem.
Has anyone run into this sort of thing before? Is there a bug in printer support in Classic? Or in Apple's Classic implementation of the Chooser? If so, this is one I would love to see fixed.
Thanks again. If anyone has anything to add, it would be much appreciated. I'm going to mark this as question answered since I was at least able to print something. But I still think there is a significant mystery here that I would like to solve.

    Hello,
Is the P1008 supported by cloud print?
i have connected my HP Chrome book to my HP 1008. in the setting --> cloud print section --> manage, i am not finding the add classic printer option.
    Please help.

    Hi @runneranu,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums. I gather that you would like to setup your Laserjet P1008 on Google Cloud Print.
The printer needs to be connected to a Windows or Mac computer with internet access. I have included Google’s Connect your printer to Google Cloud Print document which will walk you through connecting the printer as a classic printer.

  • How do I set up Macintosh Classic printing to make PDFs?

A set-up that works very well, and one that I recommend, is that you maintain the latest Acrobat on the OS X side, and use it to create your PDFs. The executive summary is (1) set up printers in Classic using OS X Acrobat PPDs; (2) print PostScript files; and (3) distill in OS X.
Locate an Acrobat 7 PPD, and copy it to the Classic System Folder's Extensions\Printer Descriptions folder. In OS X, look for ADPDF7.PPD in /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/en.lproj.
Create either or both of (i) an Adobe PDF printer instance using Desktop Printer Utility, or (ii) a Virtual Printer, properly attached to the version 7 PPD file. To date I have not found any difference in these two. Since they're both attached to the same PPD, I would think their behavior would be the same. Note that these steps have you use standard Mac dialogs to navigate to the PPD file you copied earlier from Step 1 -- if you get to the target folder and don't see the PPD, change its type:creator to TEXT:???? or TEXT:ttxt.
Set up some good defaults. In the PostScript Settings section, I recommend Level 3 Only, Binary, and Font inclusion=all (but note that you can also choose selections to make EPS, too. In Printer Specific Options, I usually drop it down to 600. If you created a printer using Apple Desktop Utility and one using Virtual Printer, you need to do these for both.
Print to a file from FrameMaker, using one of these printers. You will find the printing options you are familiar with in the Windows world in the FrameMaker 7.0 section.
Distill the resulting file in Acrobat from OS X.

I set up my new HP Descjet 3054A . I had a problem becouse Apple give me CD as a driver. The thing was that CD wasn good for this printer becouse it was old software:) I had to go to Apple store so the specialist had to download me he wright driver. Becouse I didnt wannet to screw this up . When he downloaded driver I fired it up at house and thingworks perfect. The thing is when you download all the software from HP side . Then you have to connect your MAC to printer via USB . Fallow the instructions it should works. Worked for me. Good Luck!

  • Can OS 9 Classic print to PDF?

I have a Word Perfect 3.5 for 0S 9 document on an old Powerbook G4-DVI-800MHz  (the Powerbook is 2002, the document is from 1995) that I can't seem to convert to any format that any version of MS Word from 2003-2011 can read.
OS 9 Classic won't connect to any of my current printers.
I'd settle for printing to PDF, but that doesn't seem to be possible from OS 9.
I thought it was, but I don't remember how.  Does anyone?

  • Classic Printer Sharing

    Ugh!
I'm helping some friends get up and running with Printer Sharing. I know this feature works great in OSX, but they have one OSX box and one box in Classic. Both computers can see each other and share drives, but if the printer is connected to OSX, Classic can't see the shared printer, and if the printer is connected to Classic, OSX can't see the shared printer..>
It's been so long since I've worked in classic I don't remember where to start. I know there is a Classic USB Printer Sharing Control Panel, but tooling around on it didn't bring much joy. Drivers are installed on each computer, but again, no sharing seems possible.
I'm sure there is one tiny thing I'm missing.... but just don't know what else to try.
    Any ideas ?

  • (Classic) Printer menu Missing

My office recently upgraded one of our machines from a G4 PowerPC to an iMac G5. Unfortunately classic has a slight problem. The only app we still use in classic is Pagemaker 6.5. We use networked printers; an HP 8150 and an HP 2550. Both connect through bonjour and operate just fine in OSX but are not recognised in Classic(OS9). Even after several times un-installing, and re-installing pagemaker whenever I try to print using a PPD the drop down menu where the printers should be is just not there. Sadly, printing postscripts to file is a rather necessary component of the work we do... If anyone knows where my drop down menu has gone it would be greatly appreciated.

  • Classic - Printer port (USB 1) disappears after switching User

I have used an Epson SP785EX on my iMac G5 under OSX 10.3 for months without trouble. I upgraded to OSX 10.4.8 and are constantly loosing this printer expecially when printing from Classic. After having tried everything including resetting the printing system it is still not clear what exactly causes the loss of the USB Port. However it may have to do with restarting or switching users. When in the chooser after selecting the original Epson Printer driver (which I have reinstalled many times) the Port (USB 1) does not show in the 'choose printer port list' (nothing at all shows). I have also tried the 'LaserWriter 8' solution which I do not understand. Perhaps someone can explain or point me to some literature. LaserWriter 8 shows in the Chooser but again nothing shows on the right pane of the Window. I am stabbing in the dark with this. Any help will be apprecated.

    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   Powerbook G4

I have used an Epson SP785EX on my iMac G5 under OSX
10.3 for months without trouble. I upgraded to OSX
10.4.8 and are constantly loosing this printer
    expecially when printing from Classic.
The printing subsystem changed considerably between Panther & Tiger. In Panther, you had to have a working OS 9 driver in order to print from Classic. This caused problems, particularly with certain HP printers which had OS 9 drivers which were not properly coded, and with newer printers which did not have and never would have OS 9 drivers.
In Tiger, things have changed. The default driver is the LaserWriter driver. You don't have to do anything, not even select the driver. The print system will print to the LaserWriter driver and the LaserWriter will print to the OS X driver for your printer. (This, of course, means that there must be an OS X driver for that printer...)
    After having
tried everything including resetting the printing
system it is still not clear what exactly causes the
    loss of the USB Port.
Classic does not have direct access to hardware, including USB ports.
However it may have to do with
restarting or switching users. When in the chooser
after selecting the original Epson Printer driver
(which I have reinstalled many times) the Port (USB
    1) does not show in the 'choose printer port list'
    (nothing at all shows).
    This is normal.
    I have also tried the
'LaserWriter 8' solution which I do not understand.
Just print, normally. The LW8 dialog box will pop up. You can then select the printer you want to use. (I have several printers on my system, two HP inkjets, a Brother laser, a label printer, a fax modem, and Adobe PDF)
1 type cmd-p or however you normally print
2 select the printer from the pull-down menu on the LW8 dialog
    3 print
4 the system will hand off the print job to the proper OS X print queue, which will then print the file. If you're printing in color to a color printer, you'll get color output. If you're printing to Acrobat Distiller, you'll get a PDF. If you're faxing, you'll get the fax dialog so you can enter your dialing & cover sheet info.
Perhaps someone can explain or point me to some
literature. LaserWriter 8 shows in the Chooser but
again nothing shows on the right pane of the Window.
I am stabbing in the dark with this. Any help will be
    apprecated.
    Just print. That's all.

  • Classic & printer drivers

I am running OS10.3.9 with 9.2.1 in Classic.
    I have a Canon i560 printer.
I want to run Quickbooks in Classic and need to print from it. Do I need to have the printer driver for OS9 or 10 or both?
    Where do I put it?

  • Classic Printer Driver not the one I want.  Must select with chooser.

When printing using Microsoft Word 98 (running in classic) the print dialog box does not allow me to set the print quality. Each time I start Word and want to print I must go to Chooser and select a driver (hp deskjet 5.4) which has the normal print quality controls. The dialog box that comes up when I initially print (see below) shows version 8.7.3 in the upper right hand corner.
    /Users/warrenmoore/Desktop/Picture 1.png (screen shot)
I have used the OS9 extension manager to remove other HP Print drivers and only the version 5.4 remains in the chooser. I don't want to continually go to the chooser to select a different driver.

  • How to force Tiger to print doc within Classic environment, not with OSX?

I want to print certain documents using OS9's printing utility within the Classic environment, and NOT using Tiger's standard OSX printing method. How?
I know it is possible because I have two Macs connected to the same printer, and it works on one and not the other. I can't figure out why.
    Here are the specifics:
I have a printer, the Ricoh Laser AP2600. Connected to it are two computers:
    a PowerBook G4 running 10.4.7, and
    an iMac running 10.3.9.
When I print documents from OSX applications, the two computers take the exact same time to print. HOWEVER, when I print from Classic applications, the iMac running 10.3.9 prints very quickly, but the PB running 10.4.7 takes two to three times as long. That's because the iMac prints the document using the old OS9 "Print Monitor" printing utility, and never passes the printing back to Tiger. Whenever I try to print a document from a Classic application on the PB, however, it passes the printing to the standard OSX printing method, which (for some reason) is much slower.
(Sorry if I'm not using the right terminology.)
I checked and double-checked, and as far as I can tell, all the "printer descriptions" and "drivers" and everything else is absolutely identical in both System 9 "Extension" folders on both computers. I installed the exact same Ricoh print-driver packages for OSX and Classic on both machines identically. So -- why does one print quickly within Classic, and the other pass the printing job back to slow OSX?
The specific application that causes this discrepancy is MSWord 5.1a, a very old version that only works under Classic. (I use it a lot because I prefer it to more recent versions of MSWord.)
A secondary, but related, question: Why does printing documents from within the Classic environment go so much more quickly than in OSX? It seems to be one of the few aspects of OSX that's worse than OS9.
So -- how can I make my PB behave like my iMac? Is there some difference between 10.3.9 and 10.4.7 that causes this different behavior? Any hints or suggestions would be most appreciated.
    Thanks.

OK, I have finally solved the problem -- mostly.
The trick was to click on the Chooser option called "PSPrinter" -- not LaserWriter 8 or any of the others. I took a chance on that since I knew that the Ricoh 2600 was a PostScript printer. When I clicked on it, and chose "Set up printer," I was able to set up the Ricoh driver. Then, when I tried printing, it worked -- it printed within the Classic environment, not in Tiger. And what a difference!! Under Tiger, a simple page of text takes 45 seconds to process and print. Under Classic, the exact same page processes and prints in 8 seconds! A huge difference. So, I finally got it to work.
The downside is that I can't get it to "stick." If I restart Classic (or the entire computer), the next time I go back to print in MSWord 5.1a (my Classic application), it will have reverted back to the Tiger method of printing. So, the first time I print a page in 5.1a during any session, I have to go to Chooser and select PSPrinter. This adds 15 seconds or so to the process, so printing a single page overall isn't any faster, if you add up all the steps. Subsequent prints all are done quickly in Classic automatically, as long as Classic hasn't restarted. (I can even quit the application and restart it without a problem -- only an OS restart causes it to revert back to Tiger printing.)
So, my basic problem is solved, and I'm fairly satisfied. But I still have two nagging issues that I wouldn't mind answered if anybody knows the answers:
How can I make my Chooser printer selection in Classic "stick" permanently from one restart to the next? Why does it revert to Tiger printing after a restart?
And the fundamental question: why is Classic printing so much faster than Tiger printing? I thought Tiger was supposed to be a "digital hub" that made communicating with peripherals so easy? In most ways it is, but why is printing the one way in which OSX is WORSE than OS9, at least in regards to speed?

  • Printing from Classic App to new HP printer

My new HP 6988dt will not print from a Classic App. Is there a Classic printer driver that will produce a file that could then be printed? (Something like the "Save as PDF" option in OS X print dialog.)
    Pete

    Greg,
LaserWriter 8 requires an active Appletalk but I can't make it active - it keeps saying I have to be connected to an Appletalk network. I have Appletalk turned on in Network preferences (using ethernet) since I attempt to communicate with an iMac on occasion but that doesn't.
I posed a similar question in the Classic forum and received info about a shareware Classic print driver called PrintToPDF which does produce a pdf file. This requires the extra step of printing the pdf file but at least I can get to the printer.
Thanks for your help. If you have a suggestion as to how I can get the LaserWriter 8 driver to function, I would like to try that route as it might be more direct.
In answer to Jerry's suggestion, I not only looked for a Classic driver, I emailed HP tech support. The world is moving too fast; I went looking for an update for my Scanjet 3670 and find HP isn't providing any support or even acknowledging it's existence except in archives.

  • Printing from OSX in Classic Environment 9.1 software on OSX based printers

Is it possible to load OSX on my Powerbook G3 and print OS 9.1 based applications with a printer designed to run only on OSX? I want to keep my OS 9 applications, run in the classic environment, but is this worth the possible troubles? New printers are only compatible with OSX!
    Powerbook G3   Mac OS 9.1.x

Is it possible to load OSX on my Powerbook G3 and
    print OS 9.1
I'd use 9.2.2 if I were you. 9.22 works better in Classic. Which PowerBook G3 do you have? Early ones can't run OS X beyond 10.2.8 without 3rd-party hacks, such as XPostFacto. Some not-so-early ones can't go beyond 10.3.9 without 3rd-party hacks, such as XPostFacto. Later models can run Tiger.
    based applications with a printer
designed to run only on OSX?
I've never tried, but... in Tiger it might be possible because Apple changed the way Classic prints. In Tiger, Classic prints as if the printer was a laser printer using LaserWriter 8. The LW8 driver hands off the print job to the OS X printer, which then prints normally. (Yes, even color inkjets.) I suppose that this should work even if there is no OS 9 printer installed... but I haven't tried it. If it doesn't work, well, there's not much that will be done about it at this late date.
OS X before Tiger pretty much will require that Classic have working drivers. I had mixed experience getting printers to work in Classic before Tiger. In Tiger it's very simple.
I want to keep my OS 9
applications, run in the classic environment, but is
    this worth the possible troubles?
This depends on how much printing you do from OS 9/Classic.
    New printers are
    only compatible with OSX!
Some new printers are OS X-only. Many still ship with OS 9 drivers. How much longer this will be true is not known, but is not likely to be long. If I had to print using OS 9, I would buy a printer I know works with OS 9 and is likely to last a while. Hint: this is unlikely to be a cheap printer. Second hint: I would do this quickly. Third hint: I'd think very, very, VERY hard about replacing as many OS 9 apps with OS X apps as I could. The end of OS 9/Classic, as an officially supported Apple technology, is in sight. OS 9 has not been able to run from new Macs for years now, and if Apple keeps its promise to move its entire line to Intel by the end of the year, then soon there will no longer be new Macs which can run Classic, either. There may/may not be a 3rd-party solution which allows OS 9 or something resembling Classic to run on Intel, but I'm not holding my breath. Furthermore, I suspect that OS X 10.5 will be the last OS X version to support Classic, even on PPC.

  • Why won't the header section of my Classic document print?

When I print a Classic document, printing begins at the bottom of the header section. The header section itself and any text therein is just ignored. (The header text is definitely within the page margins and the print margins, and the header dimension appears in the LaserWriter 8 Print dialogue box).
This is a great embarrasment if you are working with pre-printed stationery incorporating letterheads; to achieve the desired result you must add the header dimension to the letterhead dimension to find the insertion point setting for the first line of your document !!
Does anyone have a solution? The only clue that I can offer is that the printer is connected via a USB to parallel converter cable. (And there are no problems with OS X documents).

Hi, Roger. Every printer has a hardware-delimited maximum print area, and that area may in some cases be further restricted by the printer driver used. The position of that defined maximum-print-area rectangle on the page is also controlled by hardware or software or both. Any limitation that is imposed by your printer itself will, of course, not vary from OS X to OS 9 or Classic mode. But if your OS X driver and your OS 9 driver impose different print area restrictions, you'll see different results in Tiger and Classic. And if you're not using any OS 9 driver, as I suspect may be the case, then you may have to conclude that your old Classic apps (isn't WriteNow wonderful? I still use it too) just aren't as compatible as you might like with Classic printing in Tiger, or with your Gimp-Print driver, or with your parallel-to-USB adapter. There's an awful lot in the equation that was undreamed-of in 1994.
If there's no other driver option for you to try, then I strongly suggest buying a new, Mac-compatible printer to replace the old BJ-30, which was never meant to be used with a Mac in the first place.

  • Connect your classic printers with Google Cloud Print like in chrome

be able to do this or similar in firefox
If your printer is Cloud Ready, follow your manufacturer's provided instructions or see setting up your Cloud Ready printer.
To connect your classic printer, enable the Google Cloud Print connector on any (non-Chrome OS) computer that is already connected to your printer and able to print. You'll need Google Chrome to be installed on the computer. If you're using Windows XP, make sure you also have the Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) installed.
Once Google Chrome is installed, follow the steps below to enable the Google Cloud Print connector in Google Chrome.
Log in to your user account on the Windows, Mac, or Linux computer.
    Open Google Chrome.
Click the Chrome menu Chrome menu on the browser toolbar.
    Select Settings.
Click the Show advanced settings link.
Scroll down to the “Google Cloud Print” section. Click Manage.
The next screen will show a list of devices already registered with Google Cloud Print, and new devices available on the network.
In the "Classic printers" section, click Add printers.
You'll see a confirmation that Google Cloud Print has been enabled. Click Manage your printers to learn more.
The printer is now associated with your Google Account and connected to Google Cloud Print. You can print to this printer using Google Cloud Print whenever you’re signed in with the same Google Account.

    On your Windows PC?
Does Google Cloud Print create a Windows printer device? If so, it should appear in the drop-down of available printers in the Print dialog. If not, you may need an add-on for this.
    On your Android device?
The older add-on I saw (for Firefox/Android) may not work any more: recent reviews are very negative: https://addons.mozilla.org/mobile/addon/cloud-printer/
