Classpath and Tomcat 4.0

I need to add a jar to the classpath, and I don't know how to do that....I'm new to all this, so please be very detailed in guiding me.
I use Tomcat 4.0 on win2000.

To add a jar file to the classpath follow the following instructions
1. Windows system:
a. Go to Control Panel - System - Select the Advanced Tab.
b. Click on the Enviroment variables Button. This will throw up a window with a lot of predefined variables. The classpath varible must be one among these. If it is there select it and press edit other wise select add.
c. To add the jar file place a ";" at the end of the previously stored value and enter the full path to the jar file like this c:\dir1\dir2\Jarfile.jar
Alternately for the windows system you can add the following line to the autoexec.bat file in your c:\ drive or any .bat file which is to be run before your application
set classpath=c:\dir1\dir2\Jarfile.jar;%CLASSPATH%
2. For Unix System:
a. If you are using C shell look for the .cshrc file or .cshrc.user file to add the jar file to the classpath, similarly if it is k shell look for .kshrc or .kshrc.user file to add the path . Note that the entries in Unix are seperated by ":"
Keep me posted
Good Luck!

  • Classpath and DataSource within Tomcat

    Used software:
    - Tomcat 5.5.11
    - JDK 5.0
    - Windows XP SP2
    Problem statement:
    I have a webapplication, called monitorclient, which uses a connection
    to a database using a JNDI bound DataSource object through my context.xml file.
    To connect to the database (SQL Server), I need several JAR files. Whenever I
    place these JAR files inside the ${CATALINA_HOME}/common/lib directory,
    everything seems to work fine.
    However, I would like to place these JARs into my webapp's lib directory, which is:
    ${CATALINA_HOME}/webapps/monitorclient/WEB-INF/lib/Whenever I do this, the driver class ...
    com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver... seems to fail to be found.
    The generated exception is:
    javax.servlet.jsp.JspException: Unable to get connection, DataSource invalid:
      "org.apache.tomcat.dbcp.dbcp.SQLNestedException:
        Cannot load JDBC driver class 'com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver'".I've read the Tomcat documentation about classloading, and I can't seem to find
    any errors from my part. I queried the forums and google about this matter but
    I don't seem to get any results.
    Directory structure:
    ${CATALINA_HOME}
      /webapps/
        /monitorclient/
           /META-INF/
              context.xml -> has the DataSource
           /WEB-INF
              /classes/
                /com/.../[some java code]
              /lib/
                msbase.jar       --> when I place these jars here instead of in
                mssqlserver.jar      ${CATALINA_HOME}/commons/lib, classloading
                msutil.jar           seems to fail.
         index.jsp
         blah.jsp
         [...].jspAny help, pointers or the like are greatly appreciated.

    We had a discussion about this a little while ago.
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=651804
    Coming back to it, I have finally made some time to do that testing I promised. For me it only works when the driver is in /common/lib.
    I have tested this on both Tomcat 4.1.30 and Tomcat 5.0.28
    That makes sense to me, as it is Tomcat being responsible for loading the datasource, the driver needs to be available to the Tomcat internal classes.
    I think this page spells it out rather clearly:
    http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/tomcat-5.0-doc/jndi-datasource-examples-howto.html
    NOTE: Do not install these jarfiles in your /WEB-INF/lib, or $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/ext, or anywhere else. You will experience problems if you install them anyplace other than $CATALINA_HOME/common/lib.
    Can't get any clearer than that...

  • Communication problem between NetBeans and Tomcat

    hi!
    i got a quite mysterious problem. here is what happens:
    - i start NetBeans 5.5.1 (the first time)
    - i want to debug my JSF-Project, the Debugger starts
    - After a few seconds the debugger waits for tomcat (it sais: "Waiting for Tomcat...") and tomcat starts
    - Again after a few seconds the tomcat-debugger-output sais "Tomcat startet in 3333 ms".
    okay.
    when i enter http://localhost:8084/ in my browser i get the tomcat homepage, so the server has definitely started! But nothing happens in NetBeans and nothing happens with my project....
    In the lower-right corner i see this blue working-bar that sais "deploying project" but nothing happens. The Project-Debugger-Output still sais "Waiting for Tomcat..." but nothing happens...
    And after something around 3 minutes (i guess it's a timeout) i get the error "Starting of Tomcat failed." But is HAS started, i can login to the Administration-Area in my browser!
    so i guess there is a communication problem between netbeans an tomcat. Netbeans waits for a message from tomcat but tomcat doesn't send it..or netbeans doesn't understand it.
    But the story goes on:
    When i press the debug-button a second time it takes only a few seconds till i get the message: "Tomcat server port 8084 already in use". OF COURSE! Because Tomcat has already startet and can't be stoped by NetBeans.
    i'm trying to solve this problem for 4 days now, so i would be very happy if anyone has an idea where to start/continue the search...
    thanks,
    flo.

  • Log4j and Tomcat-problem

    Now I am trying to add logging to the whole java application in the same way which runs in tomcat and face with the foll problem.Tomcat is not able to find the configuration file.I tried to place the xml file in all feasible locations in tomcat and also tried to add in classpath but in vain.

    DOMConfigurator.configure("sudarson.xml");//**********its telling it cant find/open this xml fileWhat does "sudarson.xml" mean to you? To me, it means a file name relative to the current directory. What do you think the current directory is when you're running this in Tomcat?
    You need to research the APIs more fully, to figure out how to give it a resource name relative to the application's classpath, and put that file in said classpath.
    If I were you, I would try to avoid explicitly calling DOMConfigurator.configure altogether, and just pass the appropriate Log4J system property to the commandline that starts up Tomcat. Let Log4J worry about loading the file, given the property. If I recall correctly, the system property name is "log4j.configuration", which defaults to "log4j.properties" if unspecified. Also, rather than have each application running in Tomcat have their own log4j configuration file name, I'd name them something more universal, like "log4j.xml" - then if you deploy multiple apps in Tomcat, they can all load their own log4j.xml file, as long as (again) you corrected the "log4j.configuration" system property.

  • Classpath and property problem in services

    Hi, all,
    I've had a number of problems getting the Stockquote example to run properly. This seems to be due to a problem that services don't get either classpaths or properties when they start.
    The first manifestation of this problem came when the proxySet, proxyHost, and proxyPort environment variables weren't getting set properly in class services.stockquote.Stockquote. The symptom was that url.openStream () timed out because the proxy was not set correctly.
    The second symptom comes when"JavaPort" is used as the port on the client. Despite every attempt I've made to put services.stockquote.Stockquote on the classpath, URLClassLoader will not find this class. However, a call to Class.forName("services.stockquote.Stockquote") in Main.java, just before the bottom of the stack, works! It works in both the client and the server!
    So, could someone please tell me why the classpath and properties are getting shucked, and how to get them right?
    I'm on Windows 2000 :p using JDK 1.3.1 and Tomcat 4.0.
    Thanks,
    - Steve.

    Vivek, I think this belongs in a different thread. Also you'll need to say what problems you're having.
    The only thing that definitely needs to be changed about the example is that the service may fail if it's run behind a proxy server. You'll need to set the following System properties:
    System.setProperty("proxySet", "true");
    System.setProperty("proxyHost", "your.proxy.com");
    System.setProperty("proxyPort", <your proxy port>");
    If this isn't done you'll get an exception like the following:
    Exception in thread "main" com.ibm.wsif.WSIFException: SOAP Fault:SOAP-ENV:Server Exception from service object: Operation timed out: connect
    -S.

  • JAXM 1.1.2 and Tomcat 4.1.29

    Dear all,
    After fiddling with the configs of JAXM and Tomcat, (besides searching the mail archives), I still can't figure how to make them work together.
    I copied dom4j.jar, jaxm-api.jar and jaxm-runtime.jar to $CATALINA_HOME/common/lib. Then I copied jaxm-provider.war and jaxm-provideradmin.war to $CATALINA_HOME/webapps.
    I can access http://localhost/jaxm-provideradmin. However, when I clicked on "Profiles" on the left frame, I got the error message below. So I thought, may be I need to copy saaj-impl.jar and saaj-api.jar to $CATALINA_HOME/common/lib. This time I got different error message. (See below)
    I have also tried to include the CLASSPATH specified in catalina.sh of jwsdp-1.3. However, still no luck.
    For your info, I am doing all these on HP-UX 11.00, running JDK 1.3.1.
    Any pointer would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Setting classpath in Tomcat on AIX

    Can any one know how to set classpath for jsf application in tomcat on AIX.

    Refer to the Tomcat's documentation regarding classpaths and classloading. The underlying operating system doesn't really matter.

  • Oracle9i and Tomcat 4.03

    dear all, currently, I've installed Oracle 9i and Tomcat4.03, as well as JSDK1.4.0. However, I've found that after installing Oracle 9i, Tomcat 4.03 (start.sh) seems couldn't run. Is Oracle 9i JVM has overwritten the existing JVM? On the other hands, as I stop the Oracle service in admin. tools(note that i'm using windowsXP), Tomcat is able to start but can't access to Oracle Database that I've created. Following is the error that returned to me as I attempt to start Tomcat (Notice that Oracle database services are started):
    Catalina.start: LifecycleException: null.open: java.net.BindException: Address already in use: JVM_Bind:8080
    LifecycleException: null.open: java.net.BindException: Address already in use: JVM_Bind:8080
         at org.apache.catalina.connector.http.HttpConnector.initialize<HttpConnector.java:1130>
    and I've set the environment as followed:
    CATALINA_HOME = E:\Apache Tomcat 4.0
    CLASSPATH = .;E:\oracle\ora90\jdbc\lib\classes12.zip
    JAVA_HOME = C:\j2sdk1.4.0
    Path = E:\oracle\ora90\bin;E:\oracle\ora90\Apache\Perl\5.00503\bin\mswin32-x86;C:\Program Files\Oracle\jre\1.1.8\bin;%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem
    Your help is much appreciated...:) Pls help... it's urgent.
    Thanks in advance.
    regards,
    Wiwi.

    dear Saifuddin,
    Thanks for your help. In fact, when Iast time I installed the Oracle 8i, it came with Apache server services, however, it did not require me to change anything on server.xml under Tomcat folder. But why this time when installing Oracle 9i did require on change of port. By the way, instead of allocate localhost:8080 on Tomcat, can I allocate Tomcat port on "localhost: 8000"?
    Actually, I've stopped the Oracle database service and Oracle HTTP Server in Administrative Tools, but why I still have the returned error like; "... address already been used, JVM Bind: 8080" ?
    By the way, are you using Oracle 9i and Tomcat 4.0.3? Pls give me advice on how to setting the Oracle 9i and Tomcat 4.0.3. I highly appreciate your help.
    Thanks in adv.
    best regards.

  • CLASSPATH in TOMCAT

    Hi guys!!!
    WHat the CLASSPATH I must set, to use the servlets in tomcat container. I use the <JWSDP_HOME>\server\lib\*.jar but don't work!!!!
    Thanks.
    Giscard

    You'll have to provide more information, such as what you're doing to install the servlets, the exact line in the config file you're using (or environment property perhaps?) to set the classpath, and define exactly what "don't work" means. Are there errors on tomcat startup? Errors when attempting to execute the servlet? If so, what are the error messages? If the latter, how are you executing the servlet? If it's not either of these things, then what is going wrong?

  • How to Install and Configure Java and Tomcat

    Hi Everybody,
    I am using the following versions of java and tomcat:
    JAVA: j2sdk-1_4_2_13
    Tomcat: jakarta-tomcat-5.0.5
    I tried to configure several times both but everytime the result is the same. I am setting the following variables:
    PATH: .;D:\j2sdk1.4.2_13\bin;D:\Tomcat 5.0\bin
    CLASSPATH: .;D:\j2sdk1.4.2_13\lib;D:\Tomcat 5.0\common\lib\servlet-api.jar
    JAVA_HOME: D:\j2sdk1.4.2_13
    Please correct what mistake i am doing again and again. I appreciate your effort.
    Thanks in advance.
    Himanshu

    Fine sir, I will tell evrything in detail what steps i am following during installation and configuring java and Tomcat.
    1) I am using the following versions(exe) of java and tomcat:
    JAVA: j2sdk-1_4_2_13-windows-i586-p
    Tomcat: jakarta-tomcat-5.0.5
    2) Then, i follow exactly the same variable names and values to configure java as mentioned below to make java work under User variables header:
    PATH: .;D:\j2sdk1.4.2_13\bin
    CLASSPATH: .;D:\j2sdk1.4.2_13\lib
    JAVA_HOME: D:\j2sdk1.4.2_13
    Above steps i follow only for installing java. And it also not working properly. If i run my .java file from the destination of the file then it will be execulted but if i try to execute from any other location then it doesn't, it shows the following message in the DOS prompt:
    error: cannot read: Hello.java
    1 error
    Now, please correct what mistake i am doing.
    Thanks
    Himanshu

  • Install jDK and  Tomcat on Solaris64

    1. hi all, before I always run JDK and tomcat on Win ,righ now I want to try them on Solaris64, I just wonder do I need to set path and classpath ? where and how to set it?
    2.on asp.net we can use free toollike WinMerge to comapre which part of code be change, in java or jsp , is there any this kind of free compare tool.

    If you drop the /bin portion it should work. JAVA_HOME is the directory that the SDK installed in.

  • Simple setup problems with JSTL and Tomcat

    Hi all, I'm having some problems getting JSTL to work the 1st time. JSTL setup seems to be a common problem for relative newbies, but having read previous threads, I still haven't been able to solve my problem so hopefully someone can help:
    the jstl.jar and standard.jar are in my WEB-INF/lib directory, so I don't think it's a classpath problem.
    My jsp page has the following at the top:
    <%@ taglib uri="http://java.sun.com/jstl/core" prefix="c" %>Later, I reference a bean var with :
    <c:out value="My var is : ${var.property}"/>In my web.xml I have:
      <taglib>
       <taglib-uri>http://java.sun.com/jstl/core</taglib-uri>
       <taglib-location>/WEB-INF/lib/jstl.jar</taglib-location>
      </taglib>And I've placed the actual tld (c.tld) in the WEB-INF directory.
    On startup I get the error when compiling the JSP:
    No such tag out in the tag library imported with prefix c
    Can anyone help here?
    Thanks in advance,
    Mike

    I think this note from the JSTL mailing list by Shawn Bayern, one of the lead developers of Jakarta JSTL and the author of "JSTL In Action", will clarify it:
    http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg04587.html
    Don't put that <taglib> in your web.xml. All the books tell you to do it, but Shawn Bayern has the right answer. The URI should be the one that's in the TLD JAR .tld files.
    I use JSTL and Tomcat 4.1.24 without the <taglib>, and it works fine. - MOD

  • Configuring classpath in Tomcat 4.1.12

    Hi,
    I have an existing system which consists of JSP files and jars running on Tomcat 3.2.1 on Linux 6.1 platform. I have to upgrade it to Tomcat 4.1.12 on Red Hat Linux 8.0. However, now I am having problems in loading the jar files. Before the jars were under a different location than the Tomcat location as also the JSP files. and i used to simply run a script to load the jars on to the classpath, after i start the Tomcat server. However, now in the new system I am not being able to load the jars in the classpath. Tomcat simply won't find the jar files. How do I point Tomcat to the jar location? I would also like to mention here that I am being able to load the JSP files. In the context path, under server.xml, i am pointing the docbase to my application path. Is there any option to point to my classes also here?
    I am using a similar context path as below:
    <Host name="myapplication.com">
    <Context path=""
    debug="0"
    docbase="/home/opt/myapplication/myfiles"
    crossContext="true"
    reloadable="true"
    trusted="false"
    >
    Also I am not using WARs
    If somebody can suggest any solution it will surely be a great help.
    Thanking you in advance,
    Regards,
    Kaustuv Sharma

    or even put links to the jar files in .../common/libhi,
    so i put links to the jar files from common/lib in catalina.sh?
    coz, i tried this option by editing the catalina.sh file. But I got the following exception: "Servlet.service() for servlet jsp threw exception
    org.apache.jasper.JasperException"
    malcolmmc did u mean this?...or is there any other way where i put a link to my jar files in common/lib...?

  • Problem launching a jsp page with eclipse and tomcat

    Hi,
    I have just started using eclipse and tomcat for creating dynamic web pages. I tried to launch a jsp page after starting the tomcat server with the URL: http://locahost:8080/HelloWorld/, an error page was displayed as below:
    HTTP Status 404 -/
    type Status report
    message /_
    description The requested resource (-) is not available
    Apache Tomcat/5.5.17
    I didn't get any error at the console and when i just typed http://localhost, a pop up menu saying that the connection was refused when attempting to contact localhost.
    I'm not sure what is the problem here. Could it be the permssion to the localhost is not granted by the system as the eclipse IDE is running using linux?
    Hope someone can help.
    Thanks.
