Clean URLs with JSP/Servlet

Hello. I've found some information on how to setup clean URLs for php, but none for JSP/servlet. Hopefully some one can help. Here's what I mean by 'clean URL':
http://mydomain/employee.jsp?employeeID=1232
becomes
http://mydomain/employee/1232
And, in that second example, the container would dispatch all requests for /employee* to some JSP/servlet. I don't care if the 'clean URL' has to have an extension or not (e.g. mydomain/employee.jsp/1232) although I would prefer to also remove the JSP extension.
Additionally (if some one has experience with this need): how do I then access the final part of the URL supplied by the client? In other words, how would 1232 be available to the destination JSP/servlet? Does the container convert it into a parameter, i.e.:
1) client sends request for "mydomain/employee/1232"
2) container delegates request to "mydomain/employee.jsp?1232"
Finally (sorry about the length), I don't have access to top-level config files for this site (it's personal use, although I'm pretty familiar with java APIs from my job), so, ideally, I'd like a .htaccess level solution, where the container can just re-route to a JSP.
If any one has some suggestions, I'd GREATLY appreciate it. Thanks for your time. Take care.

...Just occurred to me- this hosting company is NOT using Tomcat. They use resin.
Thanks.

  • Metadata problem with JSP/servlet application

    Hi,
    I developed a JSP/servlet test application that makes
    use of kodo 2.2.3 STANDARD EDITION for its persitence.
    I successfully compile and annotate the application.
    I am also able to successfully generate the db
    schema with schematool.
    Unfortunately, when I run the application using
    Resin 2.0.2, Kodo is unable to initialize properly.
    Initially it was not able to find "system.prefs" file.
    I fixed that by putting "system.prefs" in WEB-INF\classes.

  • Using jFreeCharts with JSP-Servlet Web App

    Can someone please help me to get started on using the jFreeCharts in mt JSP Servlet we app? So far I have this in my servlet but I do not know what to do from here.
    protected void doPost(HttpServletRequest arg0, HttpServletResponse arg1) throws ServletException, IOException {
    //          create a dataset...
              double[][] data = new double[][] {
              { 1.0, 4.0, 3.0, 5.0, 5.0, 7.0, 7.0, 8.0 },
              { 5.0, 7.0, 6.0, 8.0, 4.0, 4.0, 2.0, 1.0 },
              { 4.0, 3.0, 2.0, 3.0, 6.0, 3.0, 4.0, 3.0 }
              //DefaultCategoryDataset dataset = new DefaultCategoryDataset(data);
              //return DatasetUtilities.createCategoryDataset("Series ", "Factor ", data);
              CategoryDataset dataset = DatasetUtilities.createCategoryDataset("Series ", "Factor ", data);
              JFreeChart chart = ChartFactory.createBarChart(
         "Bar Chart Demo 2", // chart title
         "Category", // domain axis label
         "Score (%)", // range axis label
         dataset, // data
         PlotOrientation.HORIZONTAL, // orientation
         true, // include legend
         true,
         false
         }

    the JFreeChart documentation has examples doing just that.
    And if you don't know how to get a browser to call some resource from some html you should get a beginner's tutorial to html.

  • How do i track clicks with jsp/servlets?

    I would like to know how to imitate the click of link in JSP or serlvet, in order to track clicks.
    I have pages with links containing tel protocol URIs like this:
    Click here to listen!
    I want to replace the above with something like this:
    Click here to listen!
    And have call_tracking.jsp do its tracking stuff and then spawn a phone call, just like the first example does. I do not want to bother the user with another page, hence the need to accomplish the click action programmatically. I presume this feat is achievable via Response header magic, I just don't know the right incantation ;-)
    Thanks

    You should create a servlet to track the links, let´s say LinkTracker. Here I have an example for you. Each link calls a servlet and pass the url as a parameter.
    <html>
      <head>
        <title>Some Links Tracked by the LinkTracker Servlet</title>
      </head>
      <body>
      Some good links for you. Each link is directed
      through the LinkTracker Servlet. Click on a few and visit
      the <a href="LinkTracker">LinkTracker Servlet</a>.
      <ul>
        <li><a href="LinkTracker?link=http://www.google.com">
          Google Site</a></li>
        <li><a href="LinkTracker?link=http://www.yahoo.com">
          Yahoo site</a></li>
        <li><a href="LinkTracker?link=http://java.sun.com">
          Sun Microsystems</a></li>
      </ul>
      </body>
    </html>And here the code to LinkTracker servlet
    public class LinkTracker extends HttpServlet {
      static private Hashtable links = new Hashtable();
      String tstamp;
      public LinkTracker() {
        tstamp = new Date().toString();
      public void doGet(HttpServletRequest request,
                        HttpServletResponse response)
        throws IOException, ServletException {
        String link = request.getParameter("link");
        if (link != null && !link.equals("")) {
          synchronized (links){
            Integer count = (Integer) links.get(link);
            if (count == null) {
              links.put(link, new Integer(1));
            else {
              links.put(link, new Integer(1+count.intValue()));
          //here the servlet redirect the client to the link he clicked
          response.sendRedirect(link);
        else {
          response.setContentType("text/html");
          PrintWriter out = response.getWriter();
          request.getSession();
          out.println("<html>");
          out.println("<head>");
          out.println("<title>Links Tracker Servlet</title>");
          out.println("</head>");
          out.println("<body>");
          out.println("<p>Links Tracked Since");
          out.println(tstamp+":</p>");
          if (links.size() != 0) {
            Enumeration enum = links.keys();
            while (enum.hasMoreElements()) {
              String key = (String)enum.nextElement();
              int count = ((Integer)links.get(key)).intValue();
              out.println(key+" : "+count+" visits<br>");
          else {
            out.println("No links have been tracked!<br>");
          out.println("</body>");
          out.println("</html>");
      public void doPost(HttpServletRequest request,
                        HttpServletResponse response)
        throws IOException, ServletException {

  • User authentication on LDAP with JSP/Servlet

    Please help! What I need is a small Java Servlet or JSP that I can run from a web server that will allow users type in their username and password. The JSP will then authenticate the user (by trying to log onto the LDAP server as that user) and if successful will offer them the chance to change their password. If they do it will then communicate with the LDAP server as that user and change their password.
    The LDAP server I am using is the Sun(TM) ONE 5.1 directory server.

    You can use jsp's and servlets.
    Have a .jsp (i.e. login.jsp) that has 2 fields username / password and a submit button i.e.
    <form method="post" action="/servlet/LoginServlet">
    <input type="text" size="15" name="username" value="">
    <input type="password" size="15" name="password" value="">
    <input type="submit" name="Submit" value="Authenticate">
    </form>In your servlet (i.e. LoginServlet) is where you retrieve the username / password by doing something like:
    public void doPost(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) throws ServletException, IOException {
      String username = request.getParameter("username");
      String password = request.getParameter("password");
    }You would now do your LDAP authentication. see http://java.sun.com/products/jndi/tutorial/ldap/security/ldap.html
    Depending on whether the authentication was successful or not you would redirect the user to an error page or to the next .jsp (i.e changePassword.jsp) where they can change their password.

  • How to create a pie chart with jsp/servlet?

    I want to create a servlet which can be used like below:
    <img src="pieservlet?param1=<%=x%>&param2=<%=y%>&..." width="100" height="100" >
    can you give me some guide?

    Hai ,
    I have implemented a trial working pie chart , dynamically created from jsp using ServletOutputStream , BufferedImage & JPEGImageEncoder (found in com.sun.image.codec.jpeg.* package & bundled along with jdk ) .
    <%
    ServletOutputStream sout = response.getOutputStream();
    response.setContentType("image/jpeg");
    BufferedImage img = new BufferedImage(400,400,BufferedImage.TYPE_INT_RGB);
    Graphics2D gr = img.createGraphics();
    /* Actually this will be got as values of request.getParameter */
    Vector values = new Vector();
    values.addElement(new String("45") );
    values.addElement(new String("125") );
    values.addElement(new String("75") );
    values.addElement(new String("25") );
    values.addElement(new String("90") );
    // my demo class
    temp.pieChart fr = new temp.pieChart(400,400,values);
    /* This pieChart is class extends JFrame , in paint method of it all Drawing of pie chart using graphics2D fillArc done */
    fr.paint(gr);
    JPEGImageEncoder encoder = JPEGCodec.createJPEGEncoder(sout);
    encoder.encode(img);
    sout.flush();
    %>
    Hope this helps to build your own custom pie chart .
    Let me know if details needed on pieChart class

    Hmmmm...
    ssniazi does nothing but ask for contact information or recommend Oracle products.
    Based on this I consider it likely that this person is some sort of sales representative either directly or indirectly associated with Oracle.
    I personally wouldn't provide any contact information to this person. Nor would I accept any advice until this person starts to actually provide some solutions or at least correctly reveals any financial interests that they might have.

  • Authentification with jsp

    hi i need to restrict the acces to a website with basic auth with jsp,servlet etc., i would appreciate if anyone help me thanx

    If you're using Tomcat you simply need to add some tags to your web.xml:
    <security-constraint>
      <web-resource-collection>
        <web-resource-name>
          Member Area
        </web-resource-name>
        <url-pattern>/members/*</url-pattern>
      </web-resource-collection>
      <auth-constraint>
          <role-name>member</role-name>
          <role-name>administrator</role-name>
      </auth-constraint>
    </security-constraint>This identifies any file under the members directory of your application context to require a "member" or "administrator" to view.
    <login-config>
      <auth-method>BASIC</auth-method>
      <realm-name>My Club Member Area</realm-name>
    </login-config>This identifies that Basic Authentication be used.
    After that, you need to make sure the "member" role (or whatever you call it) exists and any relevant users exist in your tomcat-users.xml file. If you've configured a database under the UserDatabase section then make sure the required roles and users are there.
    That's about it for Tomcat. If you're using a different Servlet Container/Application Server, please specify.

  • Random blank pages with JSPs

    I've written several web applications, and I've never encountered this before. I have a servlet and several JSPs. As I continue to run the application as I am developing it, I am having problems where a page will be blank. What I see is a URL with the servlet context plus a parameter for the page name that should be going to the servlet. If I click the back button in the browser, and do the exact same thing again, that post request is sent to the servlet, processed correctly, and a new JSP is dispateched to present a web page. That is, when I can't predict it, a page does not render because it seems as though the post request does not actually reach the servlet but this does not happen most of the time. I can't figure out how to debug it, since it happens at random moments on random pages. I'm running on tomcat 5.1. Any suggestions for how to debug this? My log for the application (created by log4J) shows nothing, nor does catalina.out or current localhost log file. Thanks.
    Ken

    No I didn't decide to revert back, I just wanted to see if by going back I would get blank pages again. And I did. My wife's iPad is now on Google and is working fine, so that does seem to be the solution, despite BT's Chat advisor claiming that it could not possibly be their DNS server.
    Yeah, I will change the router's DNS if it's still OK in a few hours. I gave up with the BT HH a few days after installation when I got fed up of constant (hourly) WiFi dropouts. BT kindly sent me a replacement and that was even worse ; the HH really is junk, and I hate not having control over router settings anyway. I've always been happy with Linksys so went for an EA4500, which has been great. Oh, and I also have an old WRT54GS running DD-WRT as a wireless bridge to reach the parts of the house and garden that are out of range of the 4500.
    Finally, thanks for your help.

  • Running other server-side applications with JSP

    Hi,
    I'd like to know, if is possible run with JSP (Servlet, or JavaBean) other application, which support COM. I used something like this in JavaScript:
    application=new ActiveXObject("excel.application");
    and I had all possibilities of its API. I'd like to use excel as data source for user-friendly data input.
    Thanks for all suggestions

    Hi,
    I don't realy understand your question.
    If your javascript work using activeX, this code is executed on the client side (like the excel application and the excel file).
    You can, with a JSP, generate the html page that contain the script.
    Where is the problem ?

  • How to get the query values from the url in a servlet and pass them to jsp

    ok..this is the situation...
    all applications are routed through a login page...
    so if we have a url like www.abc.com/appA/login?param1=A&param2=B , the query string must be passed onto a servlet(which is invoked before the login page is displayed)..the servlet must process the query string and then should pass all those values(as hidden values) to the login jsp..then user enters username and pswd, then there should be another servlet which takes all the hidden values of jsp and also username and pswd, authenticates the user and sends the control back to that particular application along with the hidden values...
    so i need help on how to parse the query string from the original url in the servlet, pass it out to jsp, and then pass it back to the servlet and back to the original application...damnn...any help would be greatly appreciated...thanks

    ok..this is the situation...Sounds like you have a bad design on your hands.
    You're going to send passwords in a GET request as clear text? Nice security there.
    Why not start with basic security and work your way up?

  • Filter does not work with *.jsp URL pattern???

    Hi All,
    I am, by no means, very good at JSF or Java. I have looked at various forum posts on here for ways to implement a security filter to intercept requests to pages that first require one to be logged in, and if not, redirect them to the login page. Yes, I know a lot of you have heard this many times before, and I'm sorry to bring it up again.
    BUT, from the guidance of other posts, I have got a filter that works fine when the url pattern is set to "/faces/*" or "/<anything>/*", however it won't work for "*.jsp" or "*.<anything>"
    My filter is as follows:
    package test.security;
    import javax.faces.context.FacesContext;
    import javax.servlet.Filter;
    import javax.servlet.FilterChain;
    import javax.servlet.FilterConfig;
    import javax.servlet.http.HttpSession;
    import javax.servlet.ServletRequest;
    import javax.servlet.ServletResponse;
    import javax.servlet.ServletException;
    import javax.servlet.http.HttpServletRequest;
    import javax.servlet.http.HttpServletResponse;
    public class SecurityFilter implements Filter{
        /** Creates a new instance of SecurityFilter */
        private final static String FILTER_APPLIED = "_security_filter_applied";
        public SecurityFilter() {
        public void init(FilterConfig filterConfig) {
        public void doFilter(ServletRequest request, ServletResponse response, FilterChain chain) throws java.io.IOException, ServletException{
            HttpServletRequest req = (HttpServletRequest)request;
            HttpServletResponse res = (HttpServletResponse)response;
            HttpSession session = req.getSession();
            String requestedPage = req.getPathTranslated();
            String user=null;
            if(request.getAttribute(FILTER_APPLIED) == null) {
                //check if the page requested is the login page or register page
                if((!requestedPage.endsWith("Page1.jsp")) /* This is the login page */
                    //set the FILTER_APPLIED attribute to true
                    request.setAttribute(FILTER_APPLIED, Boolean.TRUE);
                    //Check that the session bean is not null and get the session bean property username.
                    if(((test.SessionBean1)session.getAttribute("SessionBean1"))!=null) {
                        user = ((test.SessionBean1)session.getAttribute("SessionBean1")).getUsername();
                    if((user==null)||(user.equals(""))) {
                       // try {
                     //       FacesContext.getCurrentInstance().getExternalContext().redirect("Page1.jsp");
                      //  } catch (ServletException ex) {
                      //      log("Error Description", ex);
                        res.sendRedirect("../Page1.jsp");
                        return;
            //deliver request to next filter
            chain.doFilter(request, response);
        public void destroy(){
    }My web.xml declaration for the filter is:
    <filter>
      <description>Filter to check whether user is logged in.</description>
      <filter-name>SecurityFilter</filter-name>
      <filter-class>test.security</filter-class>
    </filter>
    <filter-mapping>
      <filter-name>SecurityFilter</filter-name>
      <servlet-name>Faces Servlet</servlet-name>
    </filter-mapping>
    Note: I have also tried this with <url-pattern>*.jsp</url-pattern> for the filter mapping in place of the Faces Servlet
    My web.xml declaration for the url pattern is:
    <servlet-mapping>
      <servlet-name>Faces Servlet</servlet-name>
      <url-pattern>*.jsp</url-pattern>
    </servlet-mapping>Which JSC/NetbeansVWP automatically creates a "JSCreator_index.jsp" which has:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <jsp:root  version="1.2" xmlns:jsp="http://java.sun.com/JSP/Page">
      <jsp:forward page="Page1.jsp"/>
    </jsp:root>When run, this causes an Error 500 in the browser and a NullPointerException in SecurityFilter.java on the line:
    if((!requestedPage.endsWith("Page1.jsp")) /* This is the login page */I think I'm missing something that would be obvious to anyone who knows better than me. Any ideas?

    Dear Ginger and Boris,
    thanks for the information - the problem seems to ocur in EP7 as well, Boris told me it is fixed in SP15. We are on SP14 now, so there is hope !
    actually the information in the oss note stated above is also true, as we have an Oracle DB. On a similar demo system (only difference is SQL DB) the hyphen search works !
    best regards, thank you !
