Cleaner apparently doing opposite of intention

Hi all,
I'm currently observing some very strange cleaner behaviour with BDB JE 5.0.55. Basically, my environment size has recently been getting unexpectedly large. When I shut down my DB to run some diagnostics, it shrank from ~80GB to 40GB upon graceful close.
I took a copy to diagnose (I suspected something may have been going on internally), however, when I restarted my server (and reopened the env), I noticed there was a sizeable cleaner backlog.
Upon cleaning, the log steadily got larger (rather than smaller) as the cleaner backlog approaches 0. File deletion backlog is also 0, see below for grepped output:

I would say that they're independent events (ie: something else is causing the log to grow quickly), however, if I close the DB, it instantly shrinks back down to ~42GB again, then slowly grows as I reopen it and the cleaner backlog approaches 0.
I suspect there may be something internally wrong with my database but am in which directly do head diagnosis-wise to prove/disprove this.
Any thoughts/guidance welcome -
Cheers,
fb.

fb,
This doesn't seem related to the cleaner problem to me.
Are you certain that you're calling DatabaseConfig.setTransactional(true) for the database, and that no data was written to the database in the past when DatabaseConfig.setTransactional(true) was not called?
And, just to confirm, you are not using a custom key comparator of any kind, and no data was written to the database in the past using a custom key comparator, correct?
If you're certain of both of these things, the only explanation I know of is that an unknown problem occurred earlier and the residual side effect is this corruption (which is what you're saying also). In this case, there really should have been an earlier exception. Can you find any earlier exceptions in your logs or the je.info logs?

  • My version of LR-5.7 (OS X 10.8.5) apparently does not save the .NEF (Nikon RAW) edits done in the basic module.

My version of LR-5.7 (OS X 10.8.5) apparently does not save the .NEF (Nikon RAW) edits done in the basic module. That means that I can correct exposure, highlights, shadows etc. but once I go to another picture and returned to the edited one the histogram (on the edited photo) and specifically the clipping triangles are white or some other color. This is normally suppose to indicate that some channel or all channels are clipped in the highlight/shadow areas. If I adjust any slider in the Basic panel even as little as one +/- value or press the J-key, the histogram will now show the original edit. Moving on to another photo and then returning to to previously edited one and again the edits are "not saved" and I have to hit the J-key or adjust a slider to see the previously edited information reflected in the histogram.
This is especially frustrating for fours reasons. If I have edited a shoot and return to it I cannot see from the clipping information whether the original edit was correct and of course I might re-edit it (to some now incorrect value). This brings up the second issue synchronization. I can't rely on it because if I go back to fine tune a specific image in the batch the triangles are white or some other color for that and every image. I have to hit the J-key to show/hide clipping or the back slash key to see before/after previews. This is the third issue which is very time consuming and inefficient regarding my workflow. The forth issue is that I have noticed that normally when an image is saved in PS, LR adds a copy of the saved version to its catalogue. I have noticed that the PS to LR saves are all wrong in terms of exposure (they are much lighter in tone) than the original LR edit and the PS edit on my screen. If I check the PS to LR photo in LR I notice that the Basic panel values have been changed and that I have to sync the image with the originally edited RAW/NEF LR file to get it to look the same.
Note 1). I am using an Apple cinema display and a calibrated Eizo ColorEdge monitor to view my NEF files. I have reverted back to using LR 4 however I am not sure if I should expect compatibility problems with Camera Raw 7.4 in LR 4 vs. Camera Raw 8.6 in LR 5.
Note 2.) I am going to do an import converting everything to .dng  to see if this is a work around.
Note 3). I would be interested in knowing if this issue is related to the PS RAW engine ver. 8.6, the Adobe created NEF calibrations or LR 5.
    Note 4). I have duplicated this issue in OS X 10.8.5, OS X 9.xx and OS X 10.10.1
Hopefully someone else has noticed this problem. Any shared information would be valuable. Thanks for the reply.

    Happy New Year!
The Develop panel Tone settings in your Dec 31 screenshot show both the Highlights and Shadows controls set to negative values (-48 and -19). For most images (such as this model shot) they should be set to opposite values (-Highlights and +Shadows). To try and duplicate your issue I used negative values for both of these controls with a similar high contrast image. I noticed that the Shadows control becomes non-linear when both the Highlights and Shadows controls are set to negative values. As I moved the Shadows control from a positive value the Shadows clipping indicator comes ON as expected. Moving the Shadows control to a value caused the clipping indicator to turn OFF and moving it further negative caused it to turn back ON again.
The following screenshots demonstrate the issue with only Highlights & Shadows controls applied as shown.
The Highlights & Shadows controls set just to the threshold of extinguishing the clipping indicators.
Moving the Shadows control toward negative causes the Shadow clipping indicator to come ON (as expected), but at-13 it goes OFF again!
Moving the Shadows control further negative causes the Shadows clipping indicator to come back ON at -33.
This is probably normal behavior for the PV2012 Image Adaptive Tone controls as they were not designed to be used way (- - or ++ Highlights & Shadows). The PV2012 Tone controls all interact with each other, which is why it is suggested to adjust them from the Top down starting with Exposure. For most images using -Highlights and +Shadows of near equal value produces good results.
I still can't duplicate the change in clipping indicators after selecting another image, so it may be unique to certain camera models and/or lighting conditions.
    SUGGESTION
Try one of the image files that exhibits this issue using the following PV2102 Tone control adjustment procedure:
Start with all of the Tone controls at their default 0 settings and adjust them from the top-down in the order shown below.
Set Exposure to correct midtone brightness ignoring the highlight and shadow areas for now. Setting Exposure slightly higher (+.25 to +.50 EV) than what looks correct for the midtones seems to work best with most images.
Leave Contrast at 0 for now. It’s usually better to adjust this after the first pass.
Adjust Highlights so that blown out areas are recovered and “fine tonal detail” is revealed.
Adjust Shadows to reveal fine detail in dark areas. For most normal images simply setting +Shadows = -Highlights (Example +50 and -50) works very well.
The Whites control sets the white clipping point, which you can see by holding down the ALT key as you move the slider. Adjust it to the point where you see clipping appear with the ALT key.
The Blacks control sets the black clipping point, which you can see by holding down the ALT key as you move the slider. Adjust it to the point where you see clipping appear with the ALT key.
Now go back and adjust the Contrast control to establish the best midtone contrast
If necessary “touch-up” the controls using the same top-down workflow.
If the issue persists I suggest Exporting an image to DNG file format with the settings that exhibit the issue and post it to Dropbox or other file download site.

If you back up your mac before deleting your emails, Time Machine should back up your e-mails.
I never tried this so i'm not sure to find them in Time Machine. To browse in your backups simply click the Time Machine icon in your dock. In the right bar, you can select an backup. Than you can browse in finder, in your backkup.

Try resetting your prefs. You may have a software conflict with something recently updated installed. Check your process viewer, and quit suspect processes to find the culprit. Use system restore to go back to a previous state of your OS.

  • Lightroom 5 apparently does not recognize that Photoshop is installed.

I just installed Lightroom 5, and it does not seem to recognize Photoshop CS5.1, which has been installed for some time. When I click Photo>Edit In, the option for Photoshop and all of the other related Photoshop options, such as Merge to Panorama, etc., are not active, so clicking on them does nothing. This occurs when Photoshop is open. It's as if Photoshop is not installed. Is there something I need to do to ensure that Lightroom 5 recognizes that Photoshop is installed?
I'm not sure whether the problem is that Lightroom does not recognize that Photoshop is installed or that there is some problem that prevents access to Photoshop from Lightroom.
I am using Windows 7. In Preferences for external editing, I have the following settings: File Format = TIFF; Color Space = ProPhotoRGB; Bit Depth = 16 bits; Resolution = 240; Compression = None.

I guess that the problem could be caused by 32bit and 64bit mismatch. Both applications should be 32bit or both should be 64bit.

  • Printer does not print the blue ink and clean printheads does not show the blue blocks

I cleaned my printheads numerous times and ran the printing test but the blue blocks do not show up.  There are no streak lines in any of the other colors. How do I fix this problem?

    Hey there @mvelalis!
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums!
I would be happy to provide some assistance regarding the cyan not printing.  If you have already run the printhead cleaning with no success in getting the cyan to print then I suggest removing the printhead from the printer and manually cleaning the copper contacts.  The printer takes 4 print cartridges and 2 printheads.  The printheads need to be replaced like cartridges but not as often.  The printheads are what actually put ink onto the page.
To manually clean the printheads click: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01609042

  • How backup/save software installed on T400 before doing clean install of Windows 7?

    Hi
I have a Thinkpad T400  2764-CTO Running Vista Business 32-bit  and want to do a clean install to Windows 7 Pro.
Sounds like I can get all the drivers via System Update 4.0, but I'm concerned about how to save/re-install some of the software that came on the machine.
In particular, Intervideo WinDVD and Roxio Media Import. If I go to my Programs folder and copy the folders for Roxio and InterVideo onto a flash drive, and then re-copy into the Programs folder on the C drive after a clean install, does that work?
I've never used Rescue and Recovery on the laptop, and am not sure how it works. Any advice is appreciated.
I'm not sure I even know all the stuff that exists from the factory. Anything else I should be concerned about? Thanks! - Kathleen

As Maliha said (or implied) that doesn't work.  Just copying installed programs doesn't set up the registry entries or any data folders and files they may use in your user files.
You might consider copying your entire user directory to large flash or DVD or external hard drive as a way to preserve your personal data and program data files.  Things like Thunderbird mail or Firefox bookmarks are in C:\users\kathleenklein\appdata\... (which may not be visible unless you make them so) and can be plugged back into your Windows 7 install.
"I've never used Rescue and Recovery on the laptop, and am not sure how it works. Any advice is appreciated."
First, have you made your factory recovery media?  That ensures that you can revert to factory Lenovo setup if you ever want to.  To give the machine to your little brother, for instance.  It will burn a pair of CDs and one or more DVDs.
You can/should also use R&R to save a current whole-disk image to external media.  That lets you fall back to your current setup if necessary.  This is likely to be fairly large.  An external hard drive is usually required.  Use advanced R&R to set up the target and start things off.  Once you are sure that Win 7 is going to work for you, you can get rid of the saved Vista image and use the drive for your Windows 7 backups.   You do make backups...
R&R can't (AFAIK) save your Vista user stuff and restore it to WIn 7.
Is this a clean install using Lenovo media or is it Microsoft vanilla?  I just did a MS Vanilla 7 install.  Since the service and recovery partitions in the Lenovo Visa drive configuration will be useless in a WIn 7 install (if MS vanilla) I used the advanced option and had the Win 7 install delete all partitions and just do its thing.  It created a small boot partition and used the rest of the drive for C:
After installing '7, install the latest TVSU and let it pull down the basic/necessary Lenovo drivers and apps.  After that you may choose to install the latest R&R.  Surprisingly, it can be used to make backups even without the Lenovo partitions present.  I've verified that by making a full image and restoring to a bare drive.
It's handy to Install '7, do a MS update, install TVSU, do a Lenovo update, install R&R and then burn a recovery set of CDs and DVDs so you can rewind to a sort of base-usefull-initially-updated condition should that be necessary.
As you probably already know, start here for your Lenovo Win 7 downloads: ThinkVantage Technologies Updates

  • Cleaning old systems and applications from Mac

I want to clean up my computer of old system folders and applications that are not it use but am afraid some settings will be lost. Is there a careful way to do this? Is spring cleaning or another 3rd party software the best option. I particularly want to get rid of CS, CS2, and CS3 but I notice that each time I upgrade it pulls information from the previous install and I don't want to mess up my CS4, or CS5 settings.

Trash only the application. Leave the setting files alone.

Leave the system folders alone is the +"golden rule"+ around here. Unless _you really know what you are doing,_ it's best to leave them be.
For cleaning up your computer of unwanted and/or unneeded files here are a few suggestions:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305454 Mac OS X 10.4: FileVault - "There isn't enough space on your hard disk..." alert
    Empty the trash!
Open up your application folder & go through all your apps. Trash all the apps you no longer want and/or use.
An easier way to do this is to open the Application folder in list view & press the Command+j keys.
In the the dialog that appears, click the "This Window Only" button & the "Calculate All Sizes" check box.
Wait a bit until your file & folder sizes have all been calculated, then click the "Size" column to sort your apps from the fattest to the most anorexic.
Get rid of all your photo files you don't want and/or need. Same goes for those pics off the websites you downloaded (gifs, jpegs, etc.).
Get rid of all your music files you no longer listen too. Especially, if you already have the actual CD/DVDs or you can later redownload from a website.
Use Spotlight to make sure you got rid of everything. You can even trash directly from Spotlight!
Drag what you don't want and/or need to the trash. Better yet, download this neat little shareware app demo called AppZapper. It basically does all the work for you by not only trashing the apps but the apps preference files, caches & all its associated files.
Another software that does the above is AppDelete. Best of all this software is free!
Burn what you want and/or need onto CDs or DVDs.
Not everyone has the luxury of purchasing an external HD and/or Mobile accounts to store their "stuff.”
You can check with your ISP to see if they offer free storage space. Most if not all do now-a-days.
There are thousands if not millions of free storage facilities on the web also. Use your favorite search engine to search them out as they come in different storage sizes to fit your needs & wants.
    Check for duplicate fonts.
    Applications>Font Book
    Select “All Fonts”
If you see any “black dots” next to any fonts this mean you have duplicates and/or multiple versions of these fonts.
    To clean this up, select a “black dotted” font or the Apple + click to select multiple dotted fonts;
    Edit>Resolve>Duplicates.
What the above does is turns off the duplicates & multiple version fonts. Not delete them.
More than likely the “extras” were installed by other programs and/or other users.
    Clear out font caches
Use FontNuke. It does all the work for you. And, best of all it’s FREE.
    Printer Drivers
Get rid of all the printer drivers you don’t need & use except the ones for your current printer(s)/scanner(s).
    HD>Library>Printers Folder
If you accidently threw something out that you needed for your printer/scanner it can be easily obtained from the manufacturer’s website and/or from the CD that came w/the printer/scanner.
    Garage Band
Has about 1GB of loops stored. Get rid of some some them. You surely don’t use, like and/or need them all.
    HD>Library>Audio/Apple Loops>Apple>Apple Loops For GarageBand
Or just get rid of the Garage Band app altogether if you don’t use it.
    Get rid of extra languages
Strip your computer down to your “native” tongue.
You can do this with a FREE utility called Monolingual. Another app that apparently does all the work for you. I’ve never used it. However, a lot of users here swear by & recommend it highly.
However, there is a warning for *native English speakers*. Make sure you keep BOTH English and English (United States).

Rule of thumb: You should never let your hard drive get to where you have only 10-15% of space left.
