Cleaning up css

Is there a way to clean up your external style sheet. In other words, I have made many changes to my site, positioning elements mainly and naming my styles differently from the original. I want to delete all the styles in my css stylesheet that no longer applies to my newly edited site. Is there a way for dreamweaver to check and delete all styles in the style sheet that no longer link to elements in the site??
Or does all of that have to be done manually in the css source code??

There's a Firefox add on.
I guess you've used a validator as well?   That'll help "clean up" you code although not so useful for removing redundant rules.

  • How do I clean up CSS includes?

I would like a single CSS document rather than the bajillion that Muse seems to generate - obviously I can fix this in DW but that's rather pointless and I don't want to have to do this every single time.
Anyone have some tips on this?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
You can't modify the code in Muse. The only way to  change the code is outside the Muse. So you need to export the site as HTML and edit it in DW or something similar.

  • Looks like a bug in RoboHelpX6 - CSS

I have been working in RoboHelpX6 on some CSS - Initially I
updated an existing CSS, and changed the font that was being used.
Was using Tahoma and changed it to Verdana, when I did this the CSS
lost the word wrap. I then went and created a new CSS from scratch,
stated it out with Tahoma like the first one, everything worked
fine. Went in and changed the font to Verdana and again lost the
    word wrapping!!!
    Any reports on this yet?

RoboHelp x5 rewrote CSS as well. I'm pretty sure they think
    it's a feature.
The workaround I developed involves authoring/editing the
.css files outside RH, keeping them under version control, and
reverting them whenever RH tries to change them, plus copying clean
.css files over the rewritten ones after projects have been
    generated.
Note that for every stylesheet fname.css you have, RH will
create a supposed "Netscape" version of the stylesheet called
fname_ns.css. Again, I'm pretty sure they think this is a feature.
Unless you like the way the _ns.css version looks on
Netscape/Firefox/whatever, you will want to copy your clean
    fname.css over fname_ns.css as well.

  • Mapping styles issue

    Hi All
My name is Caryn Drovie.  I am a technical writer and i have used Robohelp HTML in the past but new to 9.0
I am having some issues I cannot resolve that I will try to explain but I  think if someone can use a program like "Show my PC" and look at my PC it will be quicker and easier to troubleshoot.  The project I am working on was a former writers and I am trying to modify and work with his c.s.s and styles and templates.  Here are my initial questions first:
    CSS
    1.  I first began to edit the default c.s.s and add styles - was that wrong?  Should I take those out?  I had changed to his new c.s.s he had created.
    2.  Should the styles I create and use map the styles in the c.s.s and in the write area in the c.s.s properties page.
    3.  What do I do with the styles in c.s.s I am currently not using but may use in future?
    Styles
    1.  I have lots of styles the previous writer created.  I have not used them all but I might in future, do I delete the styles not used?
    2.  I notice that when I am trying to map a style my style drop down info does not always match my style pod info and shows in gray shaded in drop down?
    3.  The client I am working from wants me to do the following, can it be done because it is not working for me?  They want me to create process steps. no table, and use 3 styles in a row.  First style is numbering, second is result paragraph and 3rd is screen shot.  But when I modified existing styles and apply the styles all detail moves and does not align properly.  I have tried to apply none style to clear styles and reapply but no matter what I do it does not work.  I do not want to type numbers directly or play with the indents.  My goal is following example lined up and spaced out nicely:
        1.  This is the first step
Result:   this is the result alwhere all lines are aligned
              Screen shot aligned
    Can you please help me?
    thanks

1] It is not wrong to edit the default.css but I do prefer not to. It is  perhaps better regarded as a clean css to base new css files on or  something to use as a yardstick when another css is giving you grief. If you are no longer using that css, perhaps best to leave it for now until these issues are resolved. You can always get a clean default.css from a new project.
2] I am not sure what you mean here.
3] Leave them or comment them out. /* just before the definition and */ at the end of it.

1] Isn't that the same question as 3 in the previous section.
2] Map a style where? A screenshot would help. Use the camera icon to insert.
3] You could set up a multi level list as described on my site where levels two and three have no bullet or numbering. Alternatively at the end of line one, press Shift Enter and the next line will align to the text, not quite what you want as there will be no indent but maybe that is acceptable.

  • Problems with relative positioning divs

    Hi all,
I'm still new to this css layouts thing, but am stumped by this problem. I have numerous parent divs with multiple child divs within them on my page design, and for some reason these child divs are not taking up the correct spacing that I enter in the CSS. They are all relative positioned, mostly using floats and clears (and I don't think I've missed any of those). Help! Hoping that it's something simple I've missed.
To pinpoint one example of this recurring problem, the #sidenav_one div will float: left with a spacing of top 8px and left 8px, but then #sidenav_two refuses to float: left, clear: both with a spacing of top 8px (I've had to put in 16px to actually get 8px, in both Firefox, Safari and Opera). (relevant parts of code highlighted).
I am happy to change how I've structured the page, if people think there is a better or cleaner way to do it. Thanks in advance.

This is much simpler than you would think. You're making it hard work for yourself because you believe css is much more comlex than it really is or need be.
You rarely need to use relative positioning at all. You are using too many <divs> and redundant css attributes to reach your goals.
Think of the web as a simple structure of boxes and ino those boxes you place html tags or 'when' needed other <divs> ('when' is the choice word here. In time you will know when and when not to)
Copy the css and page code below and paste into a new Dreamweaver document. See how much leaner and cleaner the css and html code is.

  • Orphan 'Files' vs orphan 'STYLES'?

Developing and maintaining hundreds of web pages for a web site can be a hassle (I know - preaching to the choir.)
DW has a nice feature for identifying and locating unused (orphan) files,
    however,
    Page designs evolve over time.
Hard to keep track of all pages that call for a style that is no longer defined or have a style definition that is no longer used.
Sure would be nice to be able to
    (1) identify and locate unused 'Styles' in stylesheets and/or in documents or to
    (2) produce a list of all styles defined in the head of all pages of a web site.
    e.g.
last year I created some pages that needed a <p> with a smaller font and had a margin of 10 px on all sides.
I defined that style in the head of the document.
Later I standardized on a style that I use on several pages that is only slightly different.
Created a new style in a style sheet.
Even replaced the style identifier for paragraphs on pages I could find that used the old reference to the style I don't want to use any more.
Problem is - I still have pages that have the old unused style definition in the head of the document.
I know, I can search the site for any source code that contains '.dumstyle_icky' and replace or delete it.
But I've been a proliferous experimentor.
Tons of old pages to wade through.
Am I the only one that has this kind of problem on a site redisign?
Is there an extension, etc., that can help with this kind of houskeeping?
I purchased 'CSS Edit'. Nice CSS editor but no help organizing styles or cleaning up css on existing htm or php documents.
    dan h.

If you use Firefox (and everyone should IMHO), there's an add-on for it called Dust-Me Selectors that finds unused CSS selectors in pages and keeps a log to cross check against other site pages.

  • Question before I purchase...

    Hi all,
I'm fairly new to website building. Been at it two
years...but know I'm just scratching the surface.
Wondering if Dreamweaver has a feature to generate HTML code
for your site navigation. If so, will it update all pages with that
code, or is it done manually? What if I add pages? Will I have to
manually update every second-tier page with the new navigation
    code?
    Cheers

    > (yes, I'm that old!)
    I'm older. Whippersnapper!
    > DW itself doesn't auto-generate masses of obscure,
    proprietary code the
    > same way FP or NetObjects did
In NOF, you had no choice. It was impossible to use it
    without getting that
garbage. In FP, you only got the code you asked for. The
    problem is that
most people didn't realize they were asking for it. In
    addition, they had
the attitude that if it was possible to do something, it was
    equally GOOD to
do it. That, of course, is wrong.

  • Browser Compatability Help please?

Hi.  Im somewhat new to Dreamwevaer, I actually still use GoLive, but slowly trying to move over to DW.
Im doing Browser Compatability tests for a website, and not sure how to fix these errors DW is giving me.
Id appreciate any help or thoughts?
    thank you in advance!

You do have some HTML errors. If you run it through this validator, it will show you where they are and you can repair them...
    http://validator.w3.org/
There is an error in the css of your <head> section, you have a line of css outside your <style> tags...
    #example-one li,#example-one li a { display: inline-block; float: none; *display:inline;/* ie6 and 7 inlin e-box hack */ zoom: 1.0; }
If you don't need it, delete it, if you do, just move it into one of the <style> tag sets. (you may want to clean the css up and move it to an external sheet so everything is in the same place)
The rest of it looks fine according to the CSS validator here: http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/ the errors it throws, aside from the out of place css line are to be expected and don't affect anything negatively (they're just browser specific code).
I wouldn't be surprised if that line is causing the error you're seeing.

  • RH 11 v11.0.2.240:  Cleaning up an External Style Sheet (CSS)

    Hello,
I am in the process of trying to clean up a CSS for an "old" RoboHelp project.  I believe the CSS contains many unused styles that were probably "trial & error" styles, but were never deleted when they failed to produce the correct format.  I know it doesn't do any harm to leave them in the CSS, but I really don't want them around!
I did not see a report in RoboHelp that would provide this information, but before doing a search for each individual style using a program like Agent Ransack, I wanted to see if anyone in the Community had any clever ideas as to how to accomplish this task.
    Thanks for  your input/suggestions!

I can't say I've had this issue.  But then again, I never use the CSS property inspector to create an external style sheet.  I just hit File > New > CSS.  I add my CSS rules and Save it to the local site folder.
Link style sheet to HTML pages.

  • Best practices for cleaning up an old CSS?

We have a legacy help system that we've put into RH 9.  Our CSS has a lot of old styles in it.  Is there a best practices document somewhere that we can use to learn how to clean up the CSS and remove old styles but still preserve the ones we want?
    thanks...

I don't know of any such document but perhaps this will help.
First archive a copy of the CSS as it is now so that you can go back and retrieve anything that you later find you shouldn't have deleted.
Next you should be safe in deleting any styles you see with kadov in them. You will see they are duplicates of another style and were used for the way RoboHelp used to work.
The rest are a bit more difficult. You need to use the multifile find and replace tool to see if they are used in any topic. Then either change them to what you want now or leave them in the CSS.
See www.grainge.org for RoboHelp and Authoring tips

  • Cleaning up multi- CSS files

    Hi Folks!
I have build my first RH project (Webhelp and AIR) by importing topics from an existing system. Initially, Imported all my topics and THEN organized them into folders and build my TOC from the folders.
We need to cleanup the existing master .CSS. I just went through all my topics in an External Editor (Ultra Edit - hightly recommended) to make sure that all topics point to the top level .CSS which I just sent a team mate who is working on the "branding".
The other .CSSs are in the system, but I can only see their folders via Explorer. Can I delete them from explorer or is there another preferred way to remove them from the system. It seems silly to have to maintain multiple copies of the same .CSS
    Suggestions please.
    Ed

    Thanks Peter!
I double checked and deleted the pesky duplicates. I have also learned that paying a bit more attention to the paths in imported .html can save lots of cleanup. This proves true for both .css and images.

  • CSS Syslog Messages Clean Up

Have over a year of syslog messages on the file log sys.log.
How do I get rid of the older messages from the log sys.log file?
    Thanks,
    DTA

I'll suggest to copy the file via ftp to your PC.
Then delete the existing file on the CSS with a 'clear log sys.log'.

  • 2 great free tools: Checking IE6/7 and Cleaning CSS

So far, Microsoft Expression SuperPreview has become a standard in my testing environment as it allows multiple browsers to compare. The free version now in beta only allows two IE's: version 6 and vesion 7. However, if you upgrade your own IE browser to IE8, then you sort of have all three IE versions to care about. (this tool is in addition to your own install of FireFox of course)
They only show snaps, you don't actually navigate throughout a site, but for positioning and basic rollovers and such, it's a great tool. The link is:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=8e6ac106-525d-45d0-84db-dccff3fae 677&displaylang=en
The second awesome tool for showing either used or non used css is Dust Me: http://www.sitepoint.com/dustmeselectors/
This little add-on for Firefox will run through an entire site or page and tell you which selectors are actually used or not used and give you the names by lin numbers.
When I recently inherited about 1019 selectors in two css files for a large project, I found this tool and boy did it wade through the muck!
    Hope they are helpful.

I quite like to use IE Tester to view in all IE version from 5.5.  It's still a bit buggy but it's quite helpful.

  • CSS Designer in Depth | Creative Cloud for Web | Adobe TV

Get an in-depth look at the powerful new CSS Designer tools in Dreamweaver CC. Intuitive visual editing tools help you generate clean, web-standard code and quickly apply CSS properties like gradients and box shadows. You can see the effects on your designs immediately, eliminating tedious tweaking and the need to go back and forth to Code view.
    http://adobe.ly/ZSeWkr

The new CSS Designer feature in Dreamweaver CC is a very nice addition to the interface’s workflow. However, it’s not best for all workflows, whereby there should still be a non-assisted CSS editor option available, like in CS6, “without” all the new visual designer tools.
In CS6’s CSS properties editor you can quickly glance at the currently selected element’s CSS properties and directly edit the actual property values in a column format making this a very precise and straightforward workflow process.
For me, the ability to quickly edit CSS properties by clicking on respective elements in the design view editor is the biggest advantage and real power for using Dreamweaver over notepad type editors. Without this option (when working in split mode), it requires switching back and forth between different style-sheets and code view.
Though I really like everything else I’ve seen so far, in this latest version, this seemingly small feature restriction will considerably slow down my overall typical workflow process in most cases.  So, until a non-assisted CSS properties editor option is available, I’ll continue using CS6. Please, please fix this soon! Hopefully this is only a short-term oversight and resolved in a very near future update.

    # Based upon the NCSA server configuration files originally by Rob McCool.
    # This is the main Apache server configuration file.  It contains the
    # configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
    # See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/> for detailed information about
    # the directives.
    # Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
    # what they do.  They're here only as hints or reminders.  If you are unsure
    # consult the online docs. You have been warned.
    # The configuration directives are grouped into three basic sections:
    #  1. Directives that control the operation of the Apache server process as a
    #     whole (the 'global environment').
    #  2. Directives that define the parameters of the 'main' or 'default' server,
    #     which responds to requests that aren't handled by a virtual host.
    #     These directives also provide default values for the settings
    #     of all virtual hosts.
    #  3. Settings for virtual hosts, which allow Web requests to be sent to
    #     different IP addresses or hostnames and have them handled by the
    #     same Apache server process.
    # Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
    # of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
    # server will use that explicit path.  If the filenames do *not* begin
    # with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/foo.log"
    # with ServerRoot set to "C:/Program Files/Apache Group/Apache2" will be interpreted by the
    # server as "C:/Program Files/Apache Group/Apache2/logs/foo.log".
    # NOTE: Where filenames are specified, you must use forward slashes
    # instead of backslashes (e.g., "c:/apache" instead of "c:\apache").
    # If a drive letter is omitted, the drive on which Apache.exe is located
    # will be used by default.  It is recommended that you always supply
    # an explicit drive letter in absolute paths, however, to avoid
    # confusion.
    ### Section 1: Global Environment
    # The directives in this section affect the overall operation of Apache,

    # can find its configuration files.

    # configuration, error, and log files are kept.

    # mounted filesystem then please read the LockFile documentation (available
    # at <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/mod/mpm_common.html#lockfile>);
    # you will save yourself a lot of trouble.
    # Do NOT add a slash at the end of the directory path.

    # applications.
    # If specified, ensure that no two invocations of Apache share the same
    # scoreboard file. The scoreboard file MUST BE STORED ON A LOCAL DISK.
    #ScoreBoardFile logs/apache_runtime_status
    # PidFile: The file in which the server should record its process
    # identification number when it starts.
    PidFile logs/httpd.pid
    # Timeout: The number of seconds before receives and sends time out.
    Timeout 300
    # KeepAlive: Whether or not to allow persistent connections (more than

I am not expert in these, but please check out the following things and see whether it would solve your issue. (All these changes can be easily rolled back in case I'm wrong :). So make note of what you do)
As per your httpd.conf, you have chosen an automatic configuration of Apache by OWCI installer itself. What it does is create an imageserver.conf file in a separate directory and these settings will be included in your httpd.conf as you can see in the first line: Include "C:/bea/alui/plumtreeconf/".
If you check the imageserver.conf in that location, you would find a line like: Alias /imageserver/ "C:/bea/alui/ptimages/imageserver/". This aliases the original path "C:/bea/alui/ptimages/imageserver/" to /imageserver"
To confirm whether this is done right, check the following:
    1. Acces 'http://<server ip / server name / localhost >/' from your browser
This should display the Apache home page (as per your httpd.conf, it uses the default port 80; so no port number required)
    2. Access 'http://<server ip>/imageserver/' from your browser
This should display the directory structure (if its not disabled) inside your 'C:/bea/alui/ptimages/imageserver/' folder. Also confirm that all the subfolders are accessible.
    3. If all the above is right, it means that your imageserver settings are right. Please check your portalconfig.xml for the correct settings: For example, <setting name="HTTPPort"> should be 7001 in your case. If its something else, change it and restart Weblogic for the settings to take effect.
    Hope this helps.
