Hi you can put a new line in a text file using System.getProperty("line.separator"). This implementation will work for every OS.
import java.io.*;
class Demo{
public static void main(String args[]) throws Exception {
FileWriter fr = new FileWriter("FileDemo.txt");
     fr.write("AAAAAAAAAA");
fr.write(System.getProperty("line.separator"));
fr.write("AAAAAAAAAAA");
fr.close();
}

  • Inserting new line to a text file at position #

    Hi,.
    Is it possible to do this in java?
    1. Open a new text File (woutFile)
    2. woutFile.write(" line #1\r\n"); // write new line
    3. woutFile.write(" line #2\r\n"); // write new line
    4.woutFile.write(" line #3\r\n"); // write new line
    5. Go to line #2 position on a text file
    6. Insert NEW LINE between line #2 and Line #3
    7. move to the end-of-file
    8.Close the file
    Please help

    Is it possible to do this? please look at question
    inside comments.Your question has already been answered. Beyond that,
    if you have some code and you want to know if it will
    work, then run it and see.The answer was no. It's one of the fundamental properties of files that you cannot insert content in the middle, just at the end. To insert content you first have to make room for it. In this respect a file works like an array and not like a linked list.

  • Writing to a new line in a text files

    I have a servlet that collects results from a questionnaire by getting the parameter values of the radio buttons on a questionnaire page. I am trying to store the results of the questionnaire by writing them to a text file. I can get it to write to the files fine but cannot seem to get it to write the next set of results to a new line. I have many different ways but cannot seem to get it to work. Any ideas?
    Heres the part of the code that writes to a text file
    String lineRead = "";
                int lineCount = 0;
                while((lineRead = input.readLine()) != null)
                    lineCount ++;
                    String result = request.getParameter("question" + lineCount);
                    output.write(result + ",");
                    output.write("\n");

    Heres the part of the code that writes to a text
    file
    String lineRead = "";
    int lineCount = 0;
    while((lineRead = input.readLine()) !=
    adLine()) != null)
    lineCount ++;
    String result =
    String result = request.getParameter("question" +
    lineCount);
    output.write(result + ",");
    output.write("\n");
    Can you do output.writeln(result + ",");?
    Failing that, putting output.write("\n") inside the while loop should do the trick.

  • Want to know how to check for new line character in text file

    Hi All,
    I`m trying to read data from text file. However I`m not sure whether the data is in 1st line or nth line. Now I`m trying to read the text from the readline. But if text is "" and not NULL then my code fails. So I want to know how to check for new line character and go to next line to find the data. Please help.
    Thanks
    static int readandwriteFile(Logger logger,String filepath){
              BufferedWriter out = null;
              BufferedReader in = null;
              File fr = null;
              int get_count = 0;
              try     {
              if(new File(filepath).exists())
              fr= new File(filepath);
                        System.out.println("FileName: "+fr);
                   if(fr != null){
    in = new BufferedReader(new FileReader(fr));
                             String text = in.readLine();
                             if(text != null){
                             get_count = Integer.parseInt(text);
                             in.close();
                             else{
                                  get_count = 0;
         else{
    out = new BufferedWriter(new FileWriter(filepath));
         out.write("0");
                out.close();
                   }          //Reading of the row count file ended.
              catch(Exception e) {
                   e.printStackTrace();
              finally {
                   try{               if (in != null) {
                             in.close();
              if (out != null) {
                             out.close();
              catch(Exception e) {
                        e.printStackTrace();
              return get_count;
         }

    You are calling the readline() only once which means you are reading only the first line from the file...
    Use a loop (Do-While preferably)
    do{
    //your code
    }while(text == "")

  • Add header line to the text file in receiver file adapter

    Hello Experts,
    I have to add a new line to the text file generated at the receiver end.
    My structure is
    Record
       Item......0-unbounded
             field1
             field2
             field3
    I have defined below parameters in receiver FCC.
    RecordSet Structure : Record,Item
    Item.fieldSeparator : ;
    Record.fieldSeparator : nl
    Record.endSeparator : '0x0D''0x0A' ( this is to get a carriage return at the end of the file)
    Item.addHeaderLine : 1
    With the above configuration, i am getting the desired output with NO header line.
    Please help.
    Thanks,
    Swetha.

    Hi, it looks like that the headerline "specification is only permitted if exactly one structure is defined." Please check [SAP help under Define Parameters for Recordset Structures|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw73/helpdata/en/44/686e687f2a6d12e10000000a1553f6/frameset.htm].
    One solution would be to generate the header fields in the message payload. Generate an additional first line containing the header names, e.g.
    <Item>
    <field1>Header1
    <field2>Header2
    <field3>Header3

  • How to insert new line char while writing bytes into file

    Hello Sir,
    Is it possible to insert the new line character in set of String variables and stored them into bytearray ,then finally write into File?
    This is the sample code which i tried:
                 File f = new File(messagesDir,"msg" + msgnum + ".txt");
                 FileOutputStream fout = new FileOutputStream(f);
                    String fromString = "From:    "+msg.getFrom()+"\n";
                    String toString = "To:     "+msg.getTo()+"\n";
                    String dateString = "Sent:    "+msg.getDate()+"\n";
                      String msgString =msg.getBody()+"\n";
                    String finalString=fromString+toString+dateString+msgString;
                    byte[] msgBytes = finalString.getBytes();
                    fout.write(msgBytes);
                 fout.close();in the above code , i tried to add the new line as "\n" in end of each string. but when i look into the generated files msg1.txt , it contains some junk char [] .
    please provide me the help
    regards
    venki

    but it has still shown the the junk char, its not able
    to create the new line in the created file i am afraid
    how am i going to get the solution?:(Do not be afraid dear sir. You are obviously using a windows operating system or a mac operating system. On windows a newline is "\r\n" not '\n', and on a mac a newline is '\r', not '\n'. If you make that correction, dear sir, your program will work.
    However, there is a better way. First, you probably want to buffer your output if you are going to write more than one time to the file, which will make writing to the file more efficient. In addition, when you buffer your output, you can use the newLine() method of the BufferedWriter object to insert a newline. The newline will be appropriate for the operating system that the program is running on. Here is an example:
    File f = new File("C:/TestData/atest.txt");
    BufferedWriter out = new BufferedWriter(new FileWriter(f) );
    String fromString = "From: Jane";
    out.write(fromString);
    //Not written to the file until enough data accumulates.
    //The data is stored in a buffer until then.
    out.newLine();
    String toString = "To: Dick";
    out.write(toString);
    out.newLine();
    String dateString = "Sent: October 27, 2006";
    out.write(dateString);
    out.newLine();
    out.close();
    //Causes any unwritten data to be flushed from
    //the buffer and written to the file.

  • Reading one line from a text file into an array

    i want to read one line from a text file into an array, and then the next line into a different array. both arays are type string...i have this:
    public static void readAndProcessData(FileInputStream stream){
         InputStreamReader iStrReader = new InputStreamReader (stream);
         BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader (iStrReader);
         String line = "";
         try{
         int i = 0;
              while (line != null){
                   names[i] = reader.readLine();
                   score[i] = reader.readLine();
                   line = reader.readLine();
                   i++;
              }catch (IOException e){
              System.out.println("Error in file access");
    this section calls it:
    try{
         FileInputStream stream = new FileInputStream("ISU.txt");
              HighScore.readAndProcessData(stream);
              stream.close();
              names = HighScore.getNames();
              scores = HighScore.getScores();
         }catch(IOException e){
              System.out.println("Error in accessing file." + e.toString());
    it gives me an array index out of bounds error

    oh wait I see it when I looked at the original quote.
    They array you made called names or the other one is prob too small for the amount of names that you have in the file. Hence as I increases it eventually goes out of bounds of the array so you should probably resize the array if that happens.

  • File adapter-How to set line break in text file-split record into two lines

    Dear Guru's,
    I have to solve following problem with XML (with mulitiple records) to TEXT file scenario using file adapter. I have to output for ever ONE data record in XML always two identical lines in text file. Second line should have a little bit different mapping in few fields like date,... So I did duplicate fileds in my output structure in mapping and need to know how to set line break in the middle and see half of structure in first line and next structure half in second line
    My output structure in mapping is:
    CASHFLOW
    - INTERFACE
    - GESELLSCHAFT
    - ANWENDUNG
    - PRODUKT
    - VERTRAG
    - BETRAG
    - WAEHRUNG
    - DIRECTION
    - BEWEGUNGSTYP
    - FAELLIGKEIT
    - ZINSFESTSTELLUNG
    - ZAHLUNGSTAG
    - RENDITE
    - INTERFACE2
    - GESELLSCHAFT2
    - ANWENDUNG2
    - PRODUKT2
    - VERTRAG2
    - BETRAG2
    - WAEHRUNG2
    - DIRECTION2
    - BEWEGUNGSTYP2
    - FAELLIGKEIT2
    - ZINSFESTSTELLUNG2
    - ZAHLUNGSTAG2
    - RENDITE2
    Question is how can I set on receiving file adapter in Content Conversion Parameters that fields from first structure half INTERFACE...RENDITE should be outputed in one line and fields from second half of structure INTERFACE2...RENDITE2 should start on second line in final text file.
    I'm getting at the moment one line only and I need to know how can set line break so that second line starting with INTERFACE2(CA)...RENDITE2 will start in new line.
    CA,"0100","7","512",20090127010001,-12454762586.6800,"EUR",2,12,2009-01-28,2009-01-27,2009-01-28,"0.0000000",CA,"0100","7","512",20090127010001,-12454762586.6800,"EUR",1,10,2009-01-27,2009-01-27,2009-01-27,"0.0000000"
    This should be final output:
    CA,"0100","7","512",20090127010001,-12454762586.6800,"EUR",2,12,2009-01-28,2009-01-27,2009-01-28,"0.0000000"
    CA,"0100","7","512",20090127010001,-12454762586.6800,"EUR",1,10,2009-01-27,2009-01-27,2009-01-27,"0.0000000"
    My file adapter settings:
    RecordsetStructure=CASHFLOW
    CASHFLOW.fieldNames=INTERFACE,GESELLSCHAFT,ANWENDUNG,PRODUKT,VERTRAG,BETRAG,WAEHRUNG,DIRECTION,BEWEGUNGSTYP,FAELLIGKEIT,ZINSFESTSTELLUNG,ZAHLUNGSTAG,RENDITE
    CASHFLOW.fieldSeparator=,
    CASHFLOW.endSeparator='nl'
    CASHFLOW.fieldNames=INTERFACE2,GESELLSCHAFT2,ANWENDUNG2,PRODUKT2,VERTRAG2,BETRAG2,WAEHRUNG2,DIRECTION2,BEWEGUNGSTYP2,FAELLIGKEIT2,ZINSFESTSTELLUNG2,ZAHLUNGSTAG2,RENDITE2
    CASHFLOW.fieldSeparator=,
    It wont help if I add two identical structures in mapping because in output i would see for multiple entries section with first lines only and after that section with second lines only. And CASHFLOW is one part of more complex mapping ...
    (This is final output structure RecordsetStructure=HEADER,CASHFLOW,CONDITION,REFERENCE,CONTRACT - more sections with different data and all these should have duplicate lines at the end)
    Thanks a lot for any help
    Cheers
    Marian
    Edited by: Marian  Luscon on Jul 14, 2009 11:44 AM

    Hi Ivan,
    right, I did test just for sure.
    Putting constant 'nl' into field CASHFLOW-INTERFACE1 didnt help - still getting one line instead two lines.
    CA ,"0100" ,"7" ,"512" ,20090127GTP101 ,-12454762586.6800 ,"EUR" ,2 ,12 ,2009-01-28 ,2009-01-27 ,2009-01-28 ,"0.0000000" ,'nl' ,"GTP1" ,"7" ,"512" ,20090127GTP101 ,-12454762586.6800 ,"EUR" ,1 ,10 ,2009-01-27 ,2009-01-27 ,2009-01-27 ,"0.0000000"
    So there is still question. Is there any way (mapping,...) how to output always 2 lines in text file for one record in XML. It always does 1 record in mapping structure = 1 line but we need 2 lines ...
    Example:
    Input: 4 records in XML
    Output: 8 lines in final text file ...
    Thanks to you all guys

    Hi,
    I think <xsl:text>#xa;</xsl:text> should do the trick, but depending on which OS (ux or win), the "new line" chars sequence is different (win would require a CRLF like <xsl:text>#xd;*#xa;</xsl:text>)

  • How to insert new line character?

    Hi all,
    I have two lines to print.
    out.println("Available number of columns="+cols);
    out.println("Number of columns must be present=10");My problem is:
    i want both the lines to be printed one below the other. But, it is displayed in one single line.....
    Can anyone please tell me how to insert new line character?
    I tried with \n, '\n' and \r\n but, in vain......
    Thanks for your time.
    Regards,
    Ashvini

    You should never use "\n" directly.
    The line separator character is different on different operating systems.
    And putting quotes around it in your string will make absolutely no difference in the JSP.
    To find out what the line separator is you should use System.getProperty("line.separator");
    The JSPWriter and PrintWriter classes will automatically use this property with a println statement, so a println will always finish with a line separator.
    The issue here was that HTML by default ignores all whitespace.
    The solutions provided
    - use a <br> tag instead of a carriage return
    - use <pre> tags, which tells the browser not to ignore whitespace. That can be troublesome in JSP which generates a lot of extraneous carriage returns into the code.

  • Inserting new line in an array

    I need to insert a line of data into a file
    These are the steps I am taking
    1)read the old file
    2)put each line of old file into a single demention array element (248 lines)
    3)add one more empty element to array (one more line)
    4)shift the last four elements "down" one element <---THIS IS WHERE I AM HAVING PROBLEMS
    5)insert new data into element at element 244
    6)convert string array in to string
    7)write the file
    I am having trouble juggling the array to insert the new line.

    Thanks, but I guess I forgot to mention I am using Labview 5.11 and do not have the Insert into array function.
    I ditched shifting and inserting into an array all together and went a completly different route.
    Convert file to array
    Split array at element 244 (location where new line is to be added)
    Write first half of file to disk
    Append the new line to the file
    Append the remaining lines to the file

  • Pressing Enter inserts new line break instead of "executing" command

    I have noticed a rather strange behavior on my new TPT2. This occurs ONLY when I am using the Windows 8 touch keyboard in the "Metro" environment.
    Whenever I press the Enter key on said keyboard (for example when sending an instant message on Skype), the keyboard inserts a new line in the text box instead of acting like a "normal" Enter key and execute the default command (send the message in this example).
    I have connected an external keyboard and this problem does not show up. Everything works as expected. I also brought up the regular on-screen keyboard (launched from the Ease of Access menu) and it works the way it should. The problem is only with the Metro touch keyboard.
    It seems that for some reason, the Metro touch keyboard interprets the Enter key pressing as "insert a line break".
    Does anyone know how to fix this? It is extremely annoying.

    Just checked that, you are right, Photoshop doesn't recognize Shift-Enter as a line break and treat it as a Return which is a problem with paragraph formatting. Obviously a bug.
    Good news workaround is that it recognizes the line break character if you paste it from another program like Microsoft Word. If you don't have a program that allows you to copy just that character and use paste instead of Shift-Return, you have to type your entire text in some other program and copy paste to Photoshop.
