Clip size different to frame size in sequence-

Hi all,
I'm editing on FCP 5.1.4, and need to edit 720 x 576 DV PAL interlaced footage on a timeline that's 720 x 398 for output for a web video.
When I drop the clips onto the timeline, the clips are rescaled to 69.1%, and when enlarged back to 100%, seem to have noticeable interlace lines during any movement in the shot.
What is the best way to do this? Is it to edit on a normal aspect timeline, then at the end, change the sequence frame dimensions to 720 x 398?
Or rescale each clip at a time in a sequence that's already set to 720 x 398?
Many thanks for your help.

I'd recommend editing in a Timeline that matches your native footage. Save the downconversion (for web) until your ready to export.

how can I edit multiple clips with different frame rates on the same timeline

You do not want to edit material from different frame rates on one timeline. You CAN do this, but it is a very bad idea - and this is why.
Once you establish the sequence frame rate - lets say it is PAL material at 25fps, any material that you drop into the sequence other than 25 fps will have to be changed to play at 25 fps. If the material you add is NTSC (29.97), FCP will DROP 5 frames per sec to bring the frame rate down to 25 fps. Which 5 get thrown away? Every 6th one. This yields a funky cadence that becomes even more complex as as there are also interlaced fields (DV/NTSC is an interlaced format). Oh, and by the way, the image sizes are different as well. DV/PAL has 576 lines of resolution and DV/NTSC has 480. FCP has to scale up the NTSC to fit the PAL frame.
You do not want FCP adjusting these things on the fly. You want to do a thoughtful (and time consuming) conversion so that you end up with all your material in one format with the best possible image from the conversion process. Compressor can do an adequate job with Frame Controls turned on. The Natress Standards Conversion FCP plugin is another way to go. A third option is to find a post house that can do the conversion for you using a hardware based process.
The good news is, once everything is in the same format, editing it will be painless and the output process very quick.
Whatever frame rate/ image size you select, I'd suggest using ProRes for the codec. It is 4:2:2 color and will withstand color correction and composting with much more grace than any variant of DV based codecs.
    Have fun.

  • Clip size issues

I have a sequence of all ProRes coded clips that I brought into a new sequence that has settings to be displayed onto an NTSC monitor. Everything looks how it should, except for a few random clips that are huge and wont fit on the screen. When I choose the "fit to screen" option in the canvas pull down window the picture only shrinks a small amount. Even adjusting the size with the wire frame won't get them exactly right.
What am I doing wrong here?

Load one of the weird clips into the Viewer, open the Motion tab, adjust the scale.
If your HD material is 16x9 it will never fit a 4x3 aperture.
"Fit to screen" only adjusts the sie of the playback image in the Canvas, has nothing to do with the scaling of the clip.

  • Clip size help please.

I have loaded a 12GB file into Imovie from my DV camera.
I now want to split the file into a number of clips that will be the right size for burning to disk.
To test, I took a 3 minute clip from the original 60 minute (12GB) file but it's size remains at 12GB.
How do I get the 3 minute clip to reflect the size that it should be?

There are two different things to take into consideration here:
    1. "..I took a 3 minute clip from the original 60 minute (12GB) file but it's size remains at 12GB.."
iMovie HD 6 is a "non-destructive" editor. In the original versions of iMovie, when you cut a clip and discarded the rest then all the unwanted material really was thrown away; so taking a 3 minute clip out of a 60 minute chunk and throwing away the rest left you with a much smaller 650 megabyte mini-clip. But that meant that if you later changed your mind you couldn't 'restore' what you'd thrown away in order to adjust the cut.
In iMovie HD 6 all the original material always remains: when you make a cut, iMovie simply writes a note to itself to tell itself which section(s) of the original material to play, but the whole of the imported DV still sits there in the background, readily available in case you want to make adjustments to your chosen clip(s). That makes it possible to keep on 'Undo'ing mistakes, not just undoing the last cut you made.
So if you trim a 60 minute clip down to 3 mins the whole original 12GB file size still remains.
If hard disc space is tight and you definitely want to discard the original file(s), just Export the clip(s) you've chosen, and that will create a new file which is only as big as the exported material. You can then throw away the original import ..thus cutting your storage space from 12GB to 650MB, for example.
    2. "..I now want to split the file into a number of clips that will be the right size for burning to disk.."
If you mean that you want to burn the clips to store them and want to store them on 4.7GB DVDs as data, then the clip sizes will have to be small enough to fit. A 4.7GB DVD will hold roughly 20 minutes worth of DV files.
But if you want to burn a movie DVD of the clips you've chosen ..a DVD which will play in a normal DVD player and show your clips on a TV, then you don't need to worry about file sizes. That's because a movie DVD stores video in a compressed format called MPEG-2, and iDVD will look after the compression so that you can fit almost 2 hours of material onto a video DVD.
(..A 90-minute Hollywood movie easily fits onto a standard 4.7GB DVD because it's compressed ..but only 20 mins of a normal DV file would fit on a 4.7GB DVD..)
So, iDVD will handle all the compression to fit a movie onto a DVD as long as the movie is just under 2 hours long. So don't worry about cutting down file sizes, and don't worry that a 3 minute segment of a 1 hour DV import still looks like 12GB. You only need to consider "running time" if you're making a movie to put on a DVD. No matter what the apparent file sizes, if your movie runs for 110 minutes then iDVD will unnoticeably compress it so that it'll fit on a 4.7GB DVD.

  • Increase Clip Size

I thought I saw in a tutorial that the clip size could be increase in the event window. How's that done? I'm not referring to length or number of frames viewed, I mean the X x Y dimensions of the clip.

In list view pull down the separator bar between the preview and the list.

  • Is it possisible to play image sequence in DIAdem Clip at a defined frame rate?

    Dear all:
I have acquired quantities of image sequence of several mouse subjects for behavioral analyzing. It is possible to play the image sequence in DIAdem Clip at a defined frame rate without building a video file? if yes, how.

  • EJB3 and Toplink pre-allocation size for Sequences

    Hi,
How do I override the Toplink pre-allocation size for Sequences for a EJB3 Project?
    My problem in detail:
I have a DB sequence which gets incremented by 1. I am using this sequence to generate primary keys for one of my tables. If I try to use the @GeneratedValue annotation for this primary key, then I am getting toplink validation exception 7027. I gather that this exception comes because the default pre-allocation size (increment-by value) is 50 for TopLink while DB uses 1. Now is there is any possiblity for me to override the default pre-allocation size for EJB3 project?
Currently I am leaving the primary key empty when I persist the entity and letting a DB trigger insert the sequence value into the DB.
    thanks,
    Chandru.

    Chandru,
When defining a sequence generator in JPA you also have the ability to configure a preallocationSize that should match the DB sequence's increment.
    Here is a simple example:
    @Entity
    @SequenceGenerator(name = "emp-seq", sequenceName = "EMP-SEQ", allocationSize = 1)
    public class Employee implements Serializable {
        @Id
        @GeneratedValue(strategy = GenerationType.SEQUENCE, generator = "emp-seq")
        private int id;Doug

Is there a way to change clip size without losing image quality? Specifically, from 568 x 320 to 1920 x 1080?

No, especially not video files. That's way too much scaling.

  • LiveType clips do not fill frame fill FCE

    Hi
I have made some titles in Livetype and have set the frame size the same as my captured footage in FCE at 720x576. However, on playback the Livetype clip plays back at a much smaller size than my captured footage. Aspect ratio on the livetype clip is set to 1.78 and I've tried checking the anamorphic box. I'm shooting PAL in 16:9 and can't understand why the clips are different sizes. Do I need to make changes in Livetype or FCE and what am I doing wrong?
    Kind Regards

  • Clip freezes about 200 frames into motion

I have some video that I imported using Snapz pro. I can cut it up in Final Cut with no problems, but when I try to send it to motion, the clip will play the first 200 frames, give or take, and then automatically freezes.
I've tried using numerous clips, with different compressors, tried rendering and everything. Any ideas?

Well, it must be doing something to the media when I send it motion--When I open the file in motion without involving FCP, it opens fine and I have no problems. But if I take the clip, import it to FCP, put it into a sequence, and say "send to motion", well then the clip will play in motion and freeze somewhere in the 200-300's. So something's happening here, and I've been looking for the answer for hours to no avail...

  • Playing a movie clip in a simgle frame

I'm making a flash gallery of several different animations,
each being in one movie clip. I was wondering if there's a way to
make a whole, say, 1000 frame movie clip play in a single frame on
the main timelime, and how it would be done. (assuming that the
main timeline frame has the actionscript to make the movie stop)
I'm kinda new to actionscript and all, even though I've been
working with flash for a while, so it would be a real big help for
    this project and future ones.
    -EDIT-
I'm using AS2 for this project.

It helps to realize that even the main timeline is a
    MovieClip instance.
MovieClips play independently of one another, and can be
    nested. So if you
just take your 1000 frame clip and place it on a frame (any
    frame will do)
it will play - so long as the play head of the parent clip is
    on that frame.
And you said you have a stop(); on the main timeline, so I
    assume it is. So,
like kglad said, just put the clip on stage...

  • Is there a way to slide a clip less than one frame?

Hi, When syncing audio to video, or lining up two different sources of the same audio, I sometimes find that I want to slide a clip less than one frame in the timeline. Is there a way to do this?
    Thanks, Bob

You can slip the audio in sub-frame increments, but you cannot slip video as the frame is the basic unit.
To slip the audio in increments less than a frame, see:

  • Is there a way to sync two clips with different bit rates?

I have two clips from different camcorders of the same frame rate but slightly different frame rates. When trying to sync the 2 clips, it's nearly impossible because the frames aren't lining up. Is there anything I can do?
Where I'm trying to sync the two clips is kind of between frames.
    Thanks,
    Bob

    Hi
I only know of miniDV tape Cameras and SD-Video quality - and I use an external program to do this.
JES_Deinterlacer (free on internet) - Mainly I use it to go from PAL (25fps) to NTSC (29.97fps).
It does this so much better that just dropping into TimeLine in FCE/P or switch when going from iMovie/FCE/P to iDVD. They both does a sort of conversion - but the result has to me been very choppy/jumpy and not enjoyable at all.
There are even better conversions - But those are Pro applications and costs are astronomical - and the end result is not that much better at all.

  • Syncing two video clips from different cameras.

When both video clips are on the timeline filmed with two cameras to get different angles, is there a a keyboard shortcut to move either clip one frame at a time, or while listening to the audio a way to move the clips incremently until both videos are in sync. Some of the filming I used a 'clap' method, but wasn't able to always do this. Basically I think I am asking for fine adjustments along the timeline via the keyboard, frame by frame.

You can select the clip in the timeline and press:
"." (dot) to move right by 1 frame
"," (comma) to move left by 1 frame
":" (colon) to move right by 5 frames
";" (semicolon) to move left by 5 frames
If you keep the key pressed the clip will slowly move either wy.
You can also select one clip in the timeline and type a number n: this will appear in a small window labeled Move; when you press Enter the selected clip will move n frames to the right. For example type 8 and Enter and the clip will move right by 8 frame. To move left by 8 frames type 8, left arrow, "-", Enter (to enter negative numbers (to move left) first enter the value and then add a "-" in front of the number).
Make sure the tool is the Selection Tool (arrow) otherwise instead of moving the clip you apply other actions (slip, roll, etc.).

  • Transitions on clips on different tracks?

    Hello
Is there a way of putting transitions between clips on different tracks or do I have to continue doing what I do currently a cut the tracks together on one track and then add transitions.
    Many Thanks
    Adrian

In case your question isn't about technique, but rather of functionality - i.e.. can you get FCP to do such-and-such - then yes, you can place transitions across multiple tracks (and edit points) via the keyboard shortcut for the default transition (Command-T) or the Menubar (Effects > Video Transitions > ... ). Dragging from the Effects tab, unfortunately, won't work for multiple edit points.
Of course, you'll have to select those edit points, either via Command-clicking or using the Edit Selection Tool, and not the clips.
Even then, this is not a perfect solution in terms of how transitions will be sequenced (you might find yourself having to adjust transition alignment and/or clip lengths) but I just wanted to cover all the bases.

  • Moving Audio Clip less then 1 frame in Premiere

Is it possible to move an audio clip less then one frame in premiere CS4.  I recorded and then remixed in Audition 3.  Live concert was also recorded in HDV on a Canon hv30.  I want to use the remixed audio with the video footage in place of the camera audio.  It was recorded hdv 30P so one frame is a significant amount of time from the audios point of view.  The audio and video are about half a frame apart.  The only thing I can think of is take the audio back into audition and shorten the lead in by the required amount.  I was hoping for a easier way.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
    Ken

    Ken,
Glad that it did work for you. Now, there are still some frame-specific things that can and cannot be done, as PrPro is frame-based, but for your need, it sounded like a good solution.
    Thanks for reporting success,
