Cloning a system drive

I'm getting ready to upgrade FCP, Quicktime and possibly even to OS10.4.9. But before I do I would like to clone my system disk so in case anything goes wrong I can swap to the backup and get back to where I started.
I'm new to the Mac, what is a good application to make the clone with? Is there a Mac utility or do I have to get qa third party application?

How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
8. Select the destination drive on the Desktop and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. At the bottom in the Ownership and Permissions section be sure the box labeled "Ignore Permissions on this Volume" is unchecked. Verify the settings for Ownership and Permissions as follows: Owner=system with read/write; Group=admin with read/write; Other with read-only. If they are not correct then reset them.
For added precaution you can boot into safe mode before doing the clone.

    I can't seem to find a clear answer on this:
    I bought some new drives and would like to replace my main system drive with one of the new drives. It's a bigger drive, 1TB as opposed to 250Gb.
    Is it true that I can use Disk Utility to re-image the main drive onto a new drive, then replace the previous system drive with the new mirrored drive?
    Please advise. I've found nothing on the site to help me out other than a previous post that seems to indicate that I can do this. If you have details, please share them. Thank you!

    Either Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper will be more convenient.
    You can, in fact, use Disk Utility for this without creating a disk image in between. You just need to go to the Restore tab and drag the current volume (from the sidebar) to Source and drag the new volume to Destination. Make sure you drag the volume (indented under the drive) and not the drive to the Source and Destination fields; this is a volume to volume operation. Check the +Erase destination+ box to make the copy exact. After double-checking that you did not reverse the source and destination , click on the Restore button.
    The inconvenience is that you can't be booted from the volume you want to duplicate. So if that volume is your startup volume, you need to restart from the Mac OS X installation disc and run Disk Utility from the Installer's menu bar (or start up from another bootable volume).
    The non-Apple cloning utilities use a different method for duplicating, and they can duplicate the startup drive.
    Since you have a Power Mac G5, you can mount the new drive in the second internal bay. All the cables and screws are already in the case. There is no need to "replace" the existing drive, and there is no functional or operational difference between the first and second bays.

    I am looking to add a second system drive for more hd space. I was planning on purchasing a second Raptor and setting up a RAID 0. will I need to format my existing drive, or can I just plug in the new drive and set up my RAID in DU?

    Ok,
    You already have a Raptor as boot, most likely it's a 36 or 74GB with 8 MB cache and it's hooked up to your internal SATA ports.
    To create a RAID O, you must match the two drives exactly. Erase w/Zero both of them, create the RAID O set in Disk utility and clone your boot drive back from a booted external drive using cloning software. (meaning you have to first clone the original to a external then boot from it and clone to the RAID O)
    Problem: Western Digital has updated all their drives with a new SATA spec, also increased the cache to 16 MB. The PowerMac's can't handle the new SATA spec (supposedly the Quad can, but I'm hearing mixed stories)
    So unless you find a 8MB cache Raptor, your going to need to spend more money.
    The solution if your determined to have RAID O Raptors, is to buy two of them, preferably the new 10,000 RPM 16MB cache 150GB ones, and a Firmteck SATA PCI card (the only one that's bootable off of) with 4 internal SATA ports and 4 external ports. Then hook the internal Raptors to that.
    The Firmteck card will also give you the option of hooking up external SATA drives in a powered enclosure, one cable to each drive. So you can expand if you wish.
    With a RAID O, you must clone (for a whole boot drive) or backup (for files) quite regularly, like at least once a week for clone and daily backup for files. Since one should be doing this anyway, it's really no big deal. Because like the other poster said, RAID O is a bit more risky, one drive goes you lose all data as the data path is split. But the speed is worth it. So with a pair of 150GB Raptors your going to need a 250-300GB drive external Firewire 800/400 drive.
    Now to keep a drives performance up, you shouldn't fill it more than 50%, and certainly shouldn't fill a boot drive more than 80%. So one can use a 250GB external drive for clone backup as long as the data on the 300GB RAID O doesn't go over around 240GB. (80%) Get it?
    LaCie makes a good Firewire 800/400/USB d2 drive.
    However if this is a bit too much to bear on your wallet, then what you can do is reduce what you have on the boot Raptor below 50% by moving just what you have in documents, pictures, movies and audio files into NEW folders on a second internal SATA drive (preferably one with 16MB cache not from Western Digital)
    Once you have slimmed up your Raptor, then clone the whole drive to a external drive, option boot from it and make sure everything works correctly, repair permissions and test all software (some copy protected ones will need to be fixed). Once your are 100% certain it's ok, then Erase w/Zero the Raptor and clone the whole drive back.
    What this will do is optimize the Raptor boot drive drive, free up disk space, de-fragment large files/apps and sort of tighten everything up to the most fastest part of your boot drive, the outer tracks, in the good part of the 50% side of your drive. (vs the inner tracks where performance starts to suffer)
    Without the space hogging files that are now on the second SATA drive, your drive freshly optimized, the arm in the hard drive has less space to travel to get your data that Mac OS X, apps and random music files iTunes needs to constantly access.
    Now I suggest using Carbon Copy Cloner to do your optimizations with, because I know how this program clones drives, in alphabetical order on the main directory of your boot drive. So Applications, Developer (if you have installed Developers Tools from Tiger install disk) Library, System and finally Users at the end (where it could expand without de-optimizing your drive)
    Always follow these rules when cloning.
    1: Don't run or do anything else while a cloning process is going on.
    2: Always Disk utility Erase w/Zero option all new drives one time or in the case of a security issue.
    3: Option boot from the clone and check it out.
    4: Repair permissions BEFORE and AFTER each cloning.
    5: Avoid partial clones because of copy protection schemes hiding files on the drive.
    6: Avoid cloning to partitions, especially on the same drive, because if the drive fails mechanically your screwed out of your clone as well. Keep it a boot clone to a boot clone on a separate drive.
    7: If you can keep two clones of your boot drive, just in case you get hacked or have a exploit, because when you hook up the second clone, it will get owned too and possibly erased. If this happens, C boot off the installer disk (write protected) and Erase w/Zero all infected drives and disconnect from the internet/network before hooking up that last clone.

    Note to others: Firmteck SATA PCI card will not work in PCI-Expressed based PowerMac's.

    I cloned a bootable drive in latest Tiger version; if i install Leopard on my Powerbook will i still be able to boot from that Tiger drive?? in essence i guess i would have two different platforms running on my Powerbook -- doesn't seem like it would work the more i think about it....hmmmmm.

    You can't install a second OS on your PB. However your clone should boot your PB from the disk it's on. Just connect that disk, then in System Preferences >> Startup disk, choose it and restart.

  • Logic crashing when booting from system drive clone

    Hi,
    So I've been copying system drive clones to another drive for backup, but I find when booting from the (internal HD) clone, Logic 9 will consistently crash on me when trying to open various brands/types of plug-ins.
    For cloning I've tried SuperDuper, which I own, and Carbon Copy Cloner, which I'm running the 30 day trial of, and had identical results.
    Yeah I know it's lame to be using Logic 9, but I have several important projects originally started on 9 that I need to be finishing up now, and those projects don't play nicely with Logic X.
    I'd like to update my OS and Logic X versions, but want to have a working system clone before risking it.

    Um right after posting the query I remembered what I had learned probably right here back in yesteryear, and that is there is one thing that doesn't translate in the clone.
    When doing Get Info on the Logic 9 app, there is a check box for "Open in 32-bit mode". I need to have that unchecked, so I can run in 64-bit mode, but for the "clone", that box gets automatically checked, it is NOT actually a clone, hence the issue I was having with plug-ins causing crashes.
    Un-checking that box on the clone solved my issue.

    I had the same problem and finally solved it.
    It is "funny" that CC doesn't ask you where to install apps. Or better to say, it asks you but doesn't care. In Creative Cloud desktop app/Preferences there is option to choose where you want apps to be installed, but they are still installed in C:/Program Files/....
    How to install apps on secondary drive in just 3 steps:
    1. Go to page Adobe CC 2014 Direct Download Links – Creative Cloud 2014 Release | ProDesignTools and download all apps that you will need.
    2. Once downloaded, install it. During installation you will be asked where you want app to be installed (just like in any other "normal" installation)
    3. Be happy

  • How can I get "all my files" to recognize files in a non system drive?

    I use a Mac Pro with four internal drives, OSX 9.2. My system drive is an SSD so I keep user files on another drive in an adjacent bay.
    Files in my non-system disc are not displayed in the "all my files" finder view. If I copy a file from the system disc to my user disc, the copy is not recognized, and when I trash the original, of course, there is no reference to either. If I search, spotlight finds it. This behavior seems to apply to all files and is regardless of anything selected in the sidebar before "all my files". I have not marked any files, folders or drives as private. I presume I must have a set a pref wrong. I would really appreciate any advice.

    To change the program that .indd files default to when opened in OSX, right click on the .indd file > Open With > Other.
    Then navigate to the version of InDesign that you want to open them with (I have CS6 installed but its the same for CS5). Make sure you have "Always Open With" selected.

  • What's the best way to use a cloned Snow Leopard drive with an iBook?

    My aging and ailing MacBook Pro is going in for Apple Care.
    I've made a clone of its hard drive and would like to keep working this week using an iBook G4.  Alas, an external drive with Snow Leopard will not boot from an iBook.  I did format the drive as an Apple Partition Map, so I can see it from the iBook and work with its files--but it will not start up from it.
    I forsee screw-ups as I work with some programs and files on the iBook and others off the hard drive.  Eudora, e.g., requires its In Box and Out Boxes to reside on the boot drive; many of my favorite programs take their settings from the start up computer, not the external drive.  That means there will be all sorts of settings-- e.g., Word,  Excel's, iKey's --that will need setting on the iBook or copying over to it.
    Alternatively, I could downgrade the external drive to Leopard or even Tiger so I can boot from it and work with the files that way.   I think that will require having to reformat the external drive--which means no direct  cloning of the MBP drive to it!  It also would preclude an easy 1-step restore (I'd have to clone it back to the MBP and then upgrade to SL).
    Unsure which way makes the most sense-- or if there's another way I haven't thought of.  I do have additional hard drives to play with (e.g., I made another SL clone of the entire MBP drive).
    Any ideas, suggestions welcome!

    If we could distinguish and separate the hardware drivers, download them from Apple etc., then it could be said we can use a clone on another model of Mac provided: A, B and C are met.
    But since Apple has changed from OS 9 to OS X, PowerPC 32 bit to 64 bit, PowerPC to to Intel 32 bit, Intel 32 bit to 64 bit, locks the drivers to certain install disk versions and changes hardware around constantly, including changing the OS and making it not run on earlier versions of hardware, sideways stuff like A4/A5 processors, causing such a cluster mess of confusion and obscuration that it's better to say NOT than trying to find the tiny possibilities that it can happen.
    If it does happen, lucky you, likely won't happen for any duration worth relying upon.

  • TrueCrypt 6.2 system drive encryption hangs system sometimes a day

    I use truecrypt for years with xp and vista - last with Vista and T500, a few weeks ago I installed windows 7 x64 rtm. Every thing works fine and so I checked step by step my usual installed apps and tools.
    I see win7 is not supported by truecrypt but seems to work fine. But sometimes (one or two a hour) my system hangs for about 10 to 40 seconds. So I decided to go step by step backwards and removed installed tools.
    Removing TC solved my problem. Has anybody seen the same (TC6.2 on Win7 ult. x64 using Lenovo T500 with Intel SSD)?

    I have exactly the same problem, but with a HP Elitebook 2530p
    TrueCrypt 7.0a
    Windows 7 x64
    SSD drive, but had the same problem on my traditional HDD.
    The interval is somewhat longer for me, maybe a few times a day.
    And, just as you discovered, removing truecrypt system encryption resolves the issue. Wonder if it's an issue with just the system drive encryption thingy, or it affects all systems having encrypted volumes opened?

    Exact space required will vary widely based on installation components chosen and what you may have already installed on your system.
    And When you install your VS in another Drive and run the VS installer, you can see system requirement in installation screen.
    Because my work computer only have C Drive, I test the VS2012 professional installation in my home computer E drive. The Screen below:
    I think the system requirement can also display when you install  VS 2013.

    you can but there may be some issues and a lot of files will be saved to your c drive, anyway.

  • Help - Unmounting external USB drives causes error to system drive

    Hi,
    I am having problems with my Mid 2009 24" iMac OS 10.6.7. When unmounting external drives(usb OR firewire), I get either a message that "your computer must be restarted...." or sometimes system freezes.
    Upon reboot and examining system drive with Disk Utility, I will find file count and/or folder count errors. I must then reboot from my SL disc, repair the errors and reboot, after which the system seems to run without problems...
    So far, upon reconnecting and mounting those external drives, I have found no errors or anything that would lead me to believe that they were not unmounted correctly...
    Any help with this would be appreciated. It is beginning to be frustrating to go through this crash and repair of the system drive each time I try to use an external drive....

    I have heard others with this problem so I am really surprised none here can help.  My iMac has just crashed for the third time with corrupted disks because of this problem.

    Im building a system. The only thing on my system drive will be programs. And I will have a RAID array for my video and PSD files - but my System drive is an older UltraDMA EIDE133 250g Maxtor. This system drive is testing at 51mb/s Read, and 26mb/s write. (According to Blackmagic disk speed check program)
    A New SATA drive tests at 53 write and 43 read. So should i bother upgrading my system drive to a RAPTOR 150 or stick with the older EIDE drive? Main Programs i use are Adobe After effects, premiere pro, Photoshop for uncompressed editing with blackmagic intensity.

    MB: Tyan K8WE
    AMD Opteron 270 (dual)
    4GB RAM.
    Nvidia Quadro FX 560
    Apple cinema Display 30'
    4x500gb RAID array (2TB total) on Nvidia SATA motherboard controler.

    - Its i either spend $900 dollars or $200.
    The best possible Rig is this; I spend $500 dollars on a dedicated PCI-X RAID controller card. I buy a Raptor 150g system drive $200. And then buying another 3 drives to add to the RAID array of 2 disks i already have = $300.
    Or option 2: My motherboard (K8WE) has 4 SATA-II ports. So I could set up a 4 disk raid with what i have right now and be achieving 210+ mb/s read and write. My system drive would be off the IDE/133 channel. Then i would only have to spend $200 on 2 disks.
    I have been trying to decipher if it is logical to spend that much more money - when it is possible i will only achieve maybe 50 more Megabytes a second. - and have windows and programs start faster.
    A part of me says - "any time i try to save money on something it comes with calamity and disaster". vs. a part of me that says - "you could get more bang for your buck".

    I have a 4.5 yr old G5 that I want to keep for awhile, but I think its time to replace the original system drive. The second drive is a bigger and more recent drive that I want to reformat and install the latest OS X on it, then move to the top position as the system drive. I was thinking I would leave drive 2 in place and do the reformat and system install before moving it up to the top - will that work? Isn't there some concern about "master and slave" positions (or drive 0 and drive 1) when it comes to system drives? Can I reformat and install onto drive 2 and then simply move it up to the top position to then function as the system drive? Any better procedure? (I'm planning to install a new, larger drive in the lower slot after I create and move the new system drive.)

    No need at all to move drives around (and it can be a pain to do so in the G5s anyway) - just install your new drive in the empty slot, install the system, and use System Preferences - Startup Disk to make that the boot drive. Master/slave doesn't apply to SATA systems.
