Close tab buttons disappeared

on safari the little x buttons used to close tabs has disappeared. how do I fix this?

The same thing is happening to mine.  The 'x' button on active tabs is disappearing and then not coming back.  I have to press contol + click to get a drop down menu in order to close it out.  How do I get my Xs back?
On a side note, for some reason command Q won't quit Safari, and when I go to the File menu, Quit Safari is grayed out (not able to click it).
How do I fix these problems?

  • What happened to my "Close Tab" button?

All of a sudden I can no longer close a Firefox window by using the "Close Tab" button normally found under the File menu in the task bar. It just seems to have disappeared! If I have 2 windows open at the same time, I can't close just one of them. Instead, the only option I now have is to use the CLOSE button (red X), which then immediately closes BOTH my windows! Very annoying.

press '''CTRL + W''' to '''Close One Tab'''

  • How can I adjust size of 'close tab' button?

I'm using 12.5" fullhd touch laptop and close tab button so small that it's real pain to hit.
I need it at least 4 times larger for somewhat comfortable touch navigation.
    Add-ons and CSS is OK.
Windows 8, Firefox 20, also tried Aurora

In the ancient days of Firefox 1, a button to close the current tab appeared at the far right end of the tab bar instead of on the individual tab. If you need a much bigger button, and you find that too much of the page title is crowded out by having the button on the tab, you could switch to the old style so your wider/taller button doesn't impinge. My old page on the setting to change is here if you're interested: [http://jeffersonscher.com/FxPrefs/tabClose.html].

  • Firefox 4 the "close tab" button is missing from the "File" pull down

In Firefox 4 the "close tab" button does not appear in the "File" pull down.
This button does appear in Firefox 3.6.16 but is now gone.
I need it when I have two windows open, each with one tab open and I want to close one window.
The only option presented to me is "Quit" which closes both windows...

I agree with what you said,
"OK. While of nuisance value [why isn't this the default?]"
    Why isn't it the default?
Why force users to switch from a mouse to a keyboard (control-w) just to close a tab?

  • Update deleted my tabs, made Close Tab buttons vanish and made entering an address into a tab not work

Had some problems with Firefox being ridiculously slow yesterday, so I updated in the hope of speeding it up. Big mistake. Firstly, the 54 tabs I use for work were all replaced with Fast Dial screens. Assuming the add-on had gone rogue, I removed it, but am still having more problems.
All my tabs have gone mad. For one thing, any time I open a new tab, enter an address into the address bar and press Enter, or select an address from the Autocomplete menu, it does nothing. Only if I click a link that opens in a new tab can I open a new tab and get it to navigate to an actual address, but then, I can't access my other tabs until I've closed the new one. Also, all the Close Tab buttons have vanished from my tabs. To fix this, I have already tried:
    a) Disabling hardware acceleration, which made no difference.
    b) Starting in Safe Mode, which worked, so I went through my add-ons, narrowing it down. The problem appeared to be caused by Tab Utilities, so I disabled it, which solved the address entering problem. However, the Close Tab buttons were still absent, so I made the mistake of trying to find another tab management add-on that would be compatible with this version of Firefox. Found out the hard way that Tab Mix Plus and Tab Utilities Lite aren't, because the previous problem returned, but even now I've disabled both those add-ons (I think: can't double-check without closing this tab and losing the message), I still can't navigate to addresses in new tabs or look at any tab other than the most recent one I have open.
Any ideas what to do about this, please?

To check extension status, you can open a new instance of the Add-ons page by pressing Ctrl+Shift+a. This should open in a new tab next to the current tab. When disabling an extension, it often is necessary to restart Firefox before it actually is disabled (in that case, Firefox shows a link above the extension). To close that tab, you can use Ctrl+w.
I'm not sure why Tab Mix Plus would cause a problem using the address bar. Perhaps it is interacting with another add-on??
Could you describe the problem with the close tab buttons in more detail? Previously, it was possible to easily ''hide'' them on background tabs but now if the background tabs are wide enough they are always visible. There probably is a custom style rule (user style) to tackle that issue, but I'm not sure that's the problem you're having.
Not sure if this is relevant, but the Facebook Disconnect, Google Disconnect, and Twitter Disconnect extensions have been superseded by the (consolidated) Disconnect extension. They've switched from having individual icons inside the address bar to a single D button on the toolbar. Maybe that will help?

  • How to have a close tab button when you have only one tab ?

    I'm using FF 24.0 on Win 7 enterprise x64.
I would like to have an option to have a close tab button ("x") when you have only one tab.
Is this possible ? How ?
If not how to submit a feature request ? I did it 10+ times with feedback but didn't see any change.
    Thanks

Thanks again for the "close button" addon advice. I tried it but no luck, the close button doesn't appear on tabs but in the toolbar (which I do not display).
So the problem remains for me.

  • How do I restore the "close tab" button to the END of the tab bar, WITHOUT USING AN ADDON

Up until FF31, I used to have the following setting configured which moved the little 'X' button that closed tabs off of the tabs themselvs and onto the far right of the tab bar.
    browser.tabs.closeButtons; User Set; Integer; 3
No, this no longer works. It has still moved the close buttons back to the tab buttons. Until I can figure out how to fix this, I will be moving back to a previous version. I can't for the life of me see why this feature was removed, other than Mozilla's seemingly arrogant insistence that it knows what people want better than they do.
I was since told by someone that I can use an addon to fix it, yet the problem is THEY DO NOT WORK. The addons that supposedly solve this all have intermittent failures where they don't load correctly, leave random dead tabs open, and in one case it even seemed to open new tabs when I tried to close one.
It's absolutely inexcusable that the dev team is so arrogant to take away a feature that has fundamentally no impact on the rest of the browser, other than, as I said before, they THINK they know what we want better than we do. It's no small wonder that FF is losing market share. The only thing keeping me on board was really this function, as I prefer this layout, and if it's gone, I see no reason to stick with FF over others.

unfortunately it is not possible to restore the close button to have only one (customizable) close button on the Tab bar without using an extension.
The extension is necessary because you need to create a new toolbar button and bind the proper code to it to make the button act as a tab close button (command: BrowserCloseTabOrWindow()).

  • Disable Close Tab Button on all Tabs Broken in v5 (31.0)

    Firefox 5 (v31.0) has broken browser.tabs.closebuttons = 2
That setting is 2 in my about:config, also I have Tab Control 5.5 with Close Buttons = None.
Either way the latest Firefox is ignoring both settings and now displaying an X on my active tab.
Along with the new interface of the tabs is overlaping the tabs next to it and causing me to close tabs instead of switching tabs.
Is this another case where Firefox knows best, and just changes things because they can?
What is the proper 'new' code to totally disable the X on all tabs?

I'm still trying to figure out why the add-ons bar was removed. As
are many hundreds of other users.

  • Click boxes to close tabs have disappeared!

I am using Safari 7.0.3 with OS 10.9.2
You know the little boxes that you can click on to close tabs in Safari?  Over the weekend, they disappeared.  I hover my cursor over the tab, but the little click boxes don't appear.  I try clicking where the boxes used to appear, and nothing happens.
Anybody know where those little click boxes went to?  And, what I really want to know, how do I make them come back?
    Thanks
    Clint

Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

  • After downloading a new theme, new tab button disappeared.

New tab button nowhere to be found; not on customize menu

I didn't even download a new theme, just changed from the one I had been using to to another that I downloaded some months ago and the button vanished. I changed back but it didn't come back.

  • Why are all the close tab buttons missing?

Yesterday, I was using Firefox 25.0.1 with no issues. Today I launched Firefox, only to find that the [X] buttons for the tabs are gone! Instead, I saw a single [x] button on the rightmost side of the tabs bar, which closes the active tab. There were no changes/updates that I made to Firefox between yesterday and today. I checked the browser.tabs.closeButtons parameter, and saw that it was still set to 1. Changing it has no effect. What's going on?
    Thanks,
    Teraforce88

What really pisses me off is that we have to use an addon to make Firefox work like IT SHOULD. Now FF gets updated again and our addon is broken. The arrogance of the developers who made the call to force a tab bar at all times is astounding. Because they always have tabs open, I guess that means the rest of the internet should too.

  • Close tab buttons are not visible on every tab, how should I fix this?

    Hi there;
After updating to FF5 I have found that I no longer have a close button on all my open tabs. A close button becomes visible once I select a tab, but unselected tabs cannot be closed unless they are first selected. The end result is if I want to close a tab I first have to select it.
Simple version: I want to have a close button visible on ALL tabs at ALL times.
I have tried using the browser.tabs.closeButtons option, but no value 0,1,2, or 3 seems to be getting the job done (default was 1 when I first opened the file)
Any and all help would be appreciated!

If you have a lot of tabs opened then you only get a close button on the active tab (same as browser.tabs.closeButtons = 0)

  • No close tab button on unactive tabs

For some reason, none of the tabs have an option to close the tab without moving the focus to that tab. I have to open the tab before I can click the 'x' button. the setting in about:config is at 1, which should show the buttons, but its not.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == ???

If you have opened too many tabs then it is possible that you only see a close button on the active tab.
