Cluster Group Owner

Hi Guys,
I have DAG extended to two sites (Primary and DR).
I have moved Cluster group owner to DR mailbox server using power shell command.
Now, when I try to move the cluster group owner back to a mailbox server in the Primary site, It doesn't work.
It (PAM role of exchange) switches back to DR mailbox node automatically, any idea why is this happening ?
Platform: Server 2012 with Exchange 2013

Hi Raghu,
Please use the below mentioned command on the windows power shell and share me the results.
Step 1:
Import-Module failoverclusters
Step 2 :
Move-ClusterGroup -Node "Any one of the node on production site" -Name "cluster group"
Step 3 :
Please run the below mentioned command to check the PAM role and that is the server which is holding the cluster resources.
Get-DatabaseAvailabilityGroup -Identity "dag name" -Status | fl *pri*
To confirm that again .Please use the below mentioned command in Exchange management shell.
Get-ClusterGroup | ft -au
In addition to that , please share the fail over cluster events which is related the cluster resources move.
To have deep dig on this case we can do the following.
From one of the nodes of the cluster, open a Command Prompt with Administrator rights.  The simplest command to create the log is to type “cluster log /g”.  A clusterl.log file will be generated and stored in the %windir%\Cluster\Reports directory
on each node of the cluster.  Note that with all commands you can use either “cluster … ” or “cluster.exe …” as they have the same functionality.
Please reply me if you have any queries.

  • Reporting Services as a generic service in a failover cluster group?

There is some confusion on whether or not Microsoft will support a Reporting Services deployment on a failover cluster using scale-out, and adding the Reporting Services service as a generic service in a cluster group to achieve active-passive high
    availability.
A deployment like this is described by Lukasz Pawlowski (Program Manager on the Reporting Services team) in this blog article
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/lukaszp/archive/2009/10/28/high-availability-frequently-asked-questions-about-failover-clustering-and-reporting-services.aspx. There it is stated that it can be done, and what needs to be considered when doing such a deployment.
This article (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb630402.aspx) on the other hand states: "Failover clustering is supported only for the report server database; you
cannot run the Report Server service as part of a failover cluster."
This is somewhat confusing to me. Can I expect to receive support from Microsoft for a setup like this?
    Best Regards,
    Peter Wretmo

    Hi Peter,
    Thanks for your posting.
    As Lukasz said in the
blog, failover clustering with SSRS is possible. However, during the failover there is some time during which users will receive errors when accessing SSRS since the network names will resolve to a computer where the SSRS service is in the process of starting.
Besides, there are several considerations and manual steps involved on your part before configuring the failover clustering with SSRS service:
Impact on other applications that share the SQL Server. One common idea is to put SSRS in the same cluster group as SQL Server.  If SQL Server is hosting multiple application databases, other than just the SSRS databases, a failure in SSRS may cause
a significant failover impact to the entire environment.
SSRS fails over independently of SQL Server.
If SSRS is running, it is going to do work on behalf of the overall deployment so it will be Active. To make SSRS Passive is to stop the SSRS service on all passive cluster nodes.
So, SSRS is designed to achieve High Availability through the Scale-Out deployment. Though a failover clustered SSRS deployment is achievable, it is not the best option for achieving High Availability with Reporting Services.

  • How to track changes made to a group owner for Distribution/Security Group in FIM 20101 R2?

We have a requirement where we have to send a consolidated email to the new group owner which lists all the groups that are tagged to him/her.
This requirement is needed so that the new group owner can be notified of the groups that he/she owns. Group owner information can be updated in AD which would then sync with FIM, Bulk updates for groups in FIM.
So first we would have to basically track the group owner change in FIM, retrieve the owner information, then list all the groups listed under him, consolidate an email and trigger the notification.
Can someone help me and let me know how this can be achieved?
    Thanks in advance!!

    Hello,
you can not do with only OOB functions. You will need a custom activity to enumerate all group a specific persons owns.
First part is easy, create a MPR which triggers a workflow activity on owner attribute changes.
The custom activity should then search for all groups new owner owns in addition.
Pass that information through the WorklowDictionary to a notification activity.
If your are not familar with developing workflow activities you could use PowerShell Activity for example.

  • Cluster Installation - SQL 2005 / 2003 - Creating cluster group

    Hi All,
I am working on the cluster Installation in our environment and facing some issues at the time of installing first node MSCS  Installation. let me summarize the activities done so far
    Environment Details
    Physical Disk :
    G: (Physical Disk - SAN )
    I : (Physical Disk - SAN )
    C: Local disk
    Q: (Physical Disk Quorum - SAN )
    F: (Database and logs)
-- > SCS installed locally in the server in G drive
Virtual Hostname and IP : SeparateIP & cluster1
Node 1: Hostname and separate IP
Node 2 : hostname and Separate IP
Installed MSCS service and tested the same - its working fine
Installed SQL 2005 database in cluster mode and its working fine
    Started installing SAP
Step 1: Installation of SCS instance in node A (Used F drive) - Successfull Installed
Step 2: Installation of First node MSCS in node A
Here I am facing an issue, in the end phase of the installation it will ask for creating cluster group -- > There I need to define the Global disk as F (Which is defined at the time of installing SCS instance) - But i dont see that disk is available in the drop down box .
Is there any other workaround to bring the Global disk while creating the cluster group (First node MSCS installation)
    Looking forward for your suggestions
    Thanks and Regards
    Vijay

    Regret for the late update
112266 solved my problem and In my case, I have bisected the disk as two but in the cluster environment that should not be the case. Ensure the the same in disk management

  • Group Owner unable to see members

    Hello All,
I posted this question a while back but never got an answer so I thought I'd repost it. I've run into an issue where when a security group owner logs into the FIM portal they see the groups they are managing but are unable to see a list of
members of the group. However when I log in as an FIM administration and I look at the same group I see all members. How do I allow the group owner to manage his own group by granting him access to read the membership. Is there a specific Search Scope or MPR
that needs to be enabled besides the following.
    MPR's that are enabled
Security group management: Owners can read selected attributes of group resources
Security group management: Owners can update and delete groups they own
Navigation Bar Resources that are enabled as BasicUI
    Security Groups (SG's)
    My SGs
    My SG Memberships
Home Page Resources that are enabled as BasicUI
    Security Groups (SG's)
    My SGs
    My SG Memberships
    Search Scopes that have BasicUI
    My Security Groups
    My SG Memberships

    Default values here:
Half-seen attributes are: Manager; MiddleName; Mobile Phone; Time Zone
Is this user a part of this group as well? If so maybe try to enable MPR named User management: Users can read attributes of their own
    also?
Another way to check what should be enabled is:
In Management Policy Rules view, click Explore.
On Find tab, leave first option selected.
On Criteria tab, select: Read resource, Only permission granting...; Include disabled ...; Requestor: owner. Target Resource: group
Check MPRs listed and check which of them are disabled :)
Security group management: Owners can read selected attributes of group resources
Security group management: Users can read selected attributes of group resources
Group management: Group administrators can read attributes of group resources

  • Clustered role 'Cluster Group' has exceeded its failover threshold.

    Hello.
I’m hoping to get some help with a cluster issue I’m having using Windows Storage Server 2012.
When the cluster is created my Cluster Core Resources are all happy and online.
I can more the Cluster Name using “move Core Cluster Resources” between the two nodes without any problems.
If I select ‘Simulate Failure’ on the IP Address resource, it works the first time
If I do it again shortly after it fails and I get an Event ID 1254, 1205 and 1069.
    Event ID 1254
Clustered role 'Cluster Group' has exceeded its failover threshold.
It has exhausted the configured number of failover attempts within the failover period of time allotted to it and will be left in a failed state.
No additional attempts will be made to bring the role online or fail it over to another node in the cluster.
Please check the events associated with the failure.  After the issues causing the failure are resolved the role can be brought online manually or the cluster may attempt to bring it online again after the restart delay period.
    Event ID 1205
The Cluster service failed to bring clustered service or application 'Cluster Group' completely online or offline. One or more resources may be in a failed state. This may impact the availability of the clustered service or application.
    Event ID 1069
Cluster resource 'Cluster IP Address' of type 'IP Address' in clustered role 'Cluster Group' failed.
Based on the failure policies for the resource and role, the cluster service may try to bring the resource online on this node or move the group to another node of the cluster and then restart it.
Check the resource and group state using Failover Cluster Manager or the Get-ClusterResource Windows PowerShell cmdlet.
Basically I’m trying to simulate a network failure to make sure the failover kicks in.
If I click on it and ‘Bring Online’ it comes up fine.
Where do I find this Threshold Policy and set it to initiate failover if the IP Address resources fails?
Thank you in advance for your help.

    Hi,
The failover threshold is the number of times the group can fail over within the number of hours specified by the failover period. For example, if a group failover threshold is set to "5" and its failover period to "3," the clustering software stops attempting
to bring the group online and leaves the resources within the group in their current state. For example, if the IP Address resource is brought online but the Network Name resource fails, the group is left offline, but the IP Address resource is left online.
To configure thresholds for a resource:
Right-click the cluster resource and then select 'Propereties'
    Click 'Advanced'
Select 'Do not restart' if the cluster service should not attempt to restart. Restart is the default
    If 'Restart' is selected:
Affect the Group: uncheck to prevent a failure of the selected resource from causing the Server group to failover
Threshold: number of times the cluster service will attempt to restart the resource, and period is the amount of time in seconds between retries
Do not modify the 'LooksAlive' and 'IsAlive' settings
Unless necessary, do not alter the 'Pending Timeout'. This is the amount of time the resource is either in the online or pending or offline pending states before the the cluster service puts it in either offline or failed state

  • Howto take SQL Server 2005 Cluster AND Cluster Group Offline

I need to update firmware on the backend storage used by our Active/Passive SQL Server 2005 Cluster.  The first step in the process states that all I/O to the disks should be stopped.  Per that, I need to take the the SQL Server cluster offline AND the cluster group; however, I then need to use one of the servers that participates in the cluster to perform the upgrade on the storage array.  Using the process (which doesn't account for having to use one of clustered servers to perform updates) outlined at http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1550288&SiteID=1 as a basis, below is my best guess regarding what I will need to do:
    Shutdown:
    1. Backup all of your databases prior to the outage and ensure they are in a safe place (NOT on the disk drives in the cluster)
    2. Take the SQL Server group OFFLINE.  This will cleanly shutdown the SQL Server and it will remain offline when you power the machine back on.
    3. Once SQL Server is offline, power off the node which does NOT have the cluster resource currently running on it
    4. Save the node which is running the cluster group for last - make a note of this machine as it will be the first one you power back on.  MY ADDITION: Before powering it down, set the cluster service to manual so that when you restart the server to perform the storage array maintenance, the cluster will not be running - and likewise not generating I/O against the disk array.
MY ADDITION: 5. Restart the server from step 4.  Takes the cluster offline "cleanly" and brings the server back on line so that the storage array maintenance can be performed.
    6. Update the firmware on the storage array.  After that is complete, set the cluster service back to "Automatic".
    Start up:
    1. Restart the server.  Per the previous steps, the server to be restarted will be the server that last hosted the cluster group and the one used to update the firmware on the storage array.
    2. RDP into the node, open cluster administrator, and verify that the cluster came back online successfully and everything looks clean
    3. Power on the second node.
    4. Failover the cluster group across each node in the cluster and validate that everything looks OK
    5. Bring your SQL Server groups back online
    6. Validate that everything is operational
Is there a better way to do this or official documentation for the process?
    Thanks.

FYI: I did use the process outlined above to briing the cluster offline, perform updates, and bring it back online.  It worked as I had hoped.  As a test, I had also done the same on a test [non-SQL] cluster prior to making the updates to our SQL cluster.  Is it the best way to do it?  Who knows. Did it work?  Yes.

  • There was an error to lookup cluster groups.

    Hi,
I'm quite new to the SQL Server. I have installed SQL 2012 cluster installation and I received an error when I was installing second node of the cluster. First node installed without any issue. Please see the following error.
There was an error to lookup cluster groups. Error: There was a failure to call cluster code from a provider. Exception message: There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper.
    Thanks,
    Thisaru.

What version of the installation media are you using? I would recommend installing service pack 1 on the first node and use an installation media that included service pack 1 to add the second node.
Now to understand the issue better, are there any other error messages reported by the installation process?

  • Extract group owners from group

How can you extract group owners from a group? ver. 3.0.9.8.5. I want to do two things; extract all groups that a user is the owner of, and find all the owners of a group.
The code below will extract out all the users of a group, but how do you get the owners? I can't figure out where the group owner flag is being set. There are two deprecated functions (get_list_members, user_in_group), which I've used and is extra coding than what's necessary, but we're also migrating to version 2 soon.
    Thanks,
    Rick

Sorry, I got timed out and posted this to the wrong forum accidently. Is there a way to delete your own message?

  • Group owners can't manage own membership

I want to let group owners manage thier own membership (add and delete users from thier group only). Being assigned as "group owner" doesn't provide any mechanism that I could find to do this. However, assigning the group's "Privilege Assignments, Allow Group Editing" is too powerful, allowing membership management of all groups. We are using portal version 9.0.2.3.0B
    What am i missing?

Applied patch but it did not help. Nor did the workaround work. I can logout, close the browser and upon logging back in I still cannot manage my group.
I am both the owner and a member of my group.
    The error I get is:
    Group Management Error!
    No Privilege to Edit Group.
