Color Consistency For Product Shots

I'm doing product shots for my wife's eBay sideline.
The problem I'm having is that I will take multiple shots of an item, and despite my best intentions the color will be slightly different in each shot (enough so that when placed side-by-side on a web page, it's clearly and amateurishly different).
Here's some details about what I'm doing:
I'm usually shooting in front of a large window so it's mostly natural light. Sometimes I'll use an overhead flash, but if I do, I do so for all shots. It's not like some shots include flash and some don't. So the lighting should be consistent.
I'm usually shooting against a full white background (or full black)
My white balance is set to Auto
My exposure is manual
I'll usually try to start the shoot with a shot of a gray card. Then in Lightroom, I'll set the white balance for that shot by sampling the gray, and then copy/paste that white balance develop setting to all other shots.
So other than perhaps the Auto WB setting, I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong in the shooting to get different colors.
But that aside, this seems like something that should be fixable in LR, but despite copying the WB setting, I can't figure that out either.
What I would really like to be able to do is use the eyedropper tool on Image 1, then sample what should be the same color (but isn't) on Image 2 and say "LR, do whatever you need to in order to make the sampled color in Image 2 the same color as the sampled color in Image 1".

Gray cards (unless designed specifically to be so) are exposure guides, not color temperature guides.  A white balance target would do you a better job.
The gray card is from Scott Kelby's Lightroom book, and he specifically mentions using it for color correction (actually, the technique for copy/pasting the WB settings gathered from the card is from his book, too).
Also, in the Lightroom manual, it says "Move the White Balance Selector into an area of the photo that should be a neutral light gray. Avoid spectral highlights or areas that are 100% white."
It is the color of the background that varies that gives it away in a grid of images.
When I get home, I'll try to attach some sample images. But in general, the backgrounds are pretty consistently solid white - it's the coloring on the product that's different. Depending on my time and how expensive the item is, I'll use Photoshop to ensure the background is 100% white.
Without a constant light source (window light changes over the course of time) you really can't depend upon copying and pasting the settings.
Yeah, I know. I'm trying to convince my wife to use her eBay profits to buy me a properly lit mini-studio, but until then, I'm stuck with what I have (referring to the situation, not my wife!). But also, the shots are usually within a few seconds of each other - it's not like the light is changing that much, at least not enough to account for the differences.
I have a feeling that it might actually have to do more with exposure. Like the color balance might be OK, but one shot is just underexposed and so the colors appear darker. But you'd think that the LR exposure controls would be able to do that, but so far I just can't get it dialed in.

    Welcome to the forum.
First off, you need to go and buy a hardware monitor calibrator, such as an OptixXR or similar. This will build a custom monitor profile for your specific screen. Without this starting point you can forget ANY attempt at accurate colour matching.
Never (and I mean never) use a working space such as sRGB or Adobe98 as your monitor profile, that's not what they are designed for. Working spaces control what colours are possible in the image, monitor profiles control how those colours are shown on screen. Aperture uses it's own working space so you don't have to worry about that too much.
To answer the rest far too briefly, I'd suggest setting the proofing profile to sRGB and of course use sRGB for the export preset. The gamma setting you will have to adjust depending on how dark the Lightjet prints look compared to your screen. You will have to do test-strips to start with.
Your images looking crap on flickr on Windows machines is partly because Windows web browsers generally do NO colour correction, and only partly to do with the different gamma.

  • Canon MT-24X; for use outside a Fotoflex light cube for product shots?

    My first post; Hello,
About Canon MT-24X macro twin flash unit.
    1.
I use a light cube with 32" in. from Fotoflex (LINK REMOVED - SEE FORUM GUIDELINES ON POSTING LINKS TO 3RD PARTY SITES)
    to shot some objects.
Will I be able to use the MT-24X flashes away from camera with table tripods and put them on each side of the cube to filter the light and most important are the flashes strong enough for such a distance? What´s you opinion as a users?
    2
Can I use this twin flashes away from the camera in a wireless mode with some kind of additional wireless unit?
    Thanks very much.
    Best.

    Hi,
    thanks for your help.
I want that MT-24X flash because I own a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens. A very tricky lens and need proper light.
At x5 magnification light in needed ,-)
I thought about using just the MT-24X for regular macro shots but also with the cube. But it seems not possible.
Now. seeking for a solution I need confirmation on a different setup that is:
I think the MT-24X can be used as a master>slave set with another Canon flash (don´t know yet if all if some of the Canon flashes). You as owner must know about this wireless comunication capabilities.
Imagine a scenario with a still life object inside my cube.
That way I would be able to use the MT-24X mounted as it should be, in front of the cube to make the shot and use an additional (one or two) wireless Canon flashes standing at the sides of the cube.
Two kinds of light: direct from the macro flashes (front) and diffused by the cube from the sides.
I don´t know if I´ll need 4 flashes but would like to know if this is a working possibility.

  • How can we change the  color of the image for product display for different

    Hi All,
How can we change the  color of the image for product display for different colors, to be displayed on site.
    jeff

    Hi priya,
The requirement that you have stated is not a standard feature in ISA CRM. In order to do the same, you will need to modify the standard ISA code in Java. A common path for the solution would be as follows:
    1. Colours
        a. Maintain a text type for Color under the object - PCAT_ITM in Customizing.
        b. Modify the standard search of ISA to search within your new text type as well. (In standard it only searches in Description.
       c. Maintain all shirts colour data in the new type created in step a.
       d. Your requirement will be done!
    2. Price
      a. Use list prices for your shop and assign the appropriate condition type, acces in your catalog.
      b. Modify the standard search of ISA to search on the list prices as well.
      c. This too will be done!
    3. Accessories - This is very tricky, and will require some exploration. However, here's my opinion,
    a. Search for the standard function module, which will return the accessories when provided the product as an input.
    b. Modify this function module according to your requirement and ensure that it can be accessed remotely.
    c. Modify the JSP as in steps 1b and 2b above to call this new remote-enabled function module.
    d. Now you're done!!
The ISA modification part is not so simple, you need a really good guy like "Sateesh Chandra" who'll be able to handle your requirements. This is all I could manage, hope it is some help to you!
    Thanks & Regards,
    Nelson.

  • I bought PSE for one reason. . to standardize background colors of my product pictures

    Hi Everyone,
I just bought and installed PSE on my pc for one reason. I retail fine and costume jewelry and gift items on my website. I am currently having a new site built for me and I want to have all the product pictures showing on my site with a standardized color background as opposed to whatever color I scan the item with in it's original background color. The product pictures come from several sources (mfg websites, catalog scans, etc.)and my site is cheapened by the array of too many different (and distracting) background colors showing at once. My webmaster told me PSE would allow me to do this.
All I need to do is remove the existing background color of each picture and add a standard color of choice. As I have hundreds of items/product pieces, I need a quick and effective way of making this change YESTERDAY.  I have read so many tutorials, but they are not making the jewelry pieces look "real" much less elegant.
I am attaching a sample of the types of pictures I am working with. Can anyone help me accomplish this quickly, easily and professionally???

It's a manual edit. I don't know of any way around it. I've never seen ANY photo software that has an auto-background setting for imported pictures.
You could try getafreelancer.com and see if they have anyone who can do this for you. Most of the people there work cheap and they are no slouches when it comes to getting things done in a hurry.

  • Multiple indesign files for product brochure one data merge file

I have multiple indesign files for product brochure and there are price changes for various products.
attached is a screen shot of the folder where all the indesign files are located as you can see each one has been laid out as a spread.
Rather than opening each individual indesign file to amend prices can i quickly? or is there a way of compliling all documents into one file and quickly updating the price with the data merge file.
    thanks in advance.

    Absolutely not.
    (1)     PDF/VT-1 files must also be PDF/X-4 files. The “create PDF via distillation of PostScript” method precludes this since PostScript supports neither live transparency nor color management.
    (2)     The efficiencies of PDF/VT-1 require use of Forms XOjects and Image XObjects in the PDF file. That requires direct PDF creation that you get from PDF export. This is not available via any route that uses stink'in PostScript as an intermediary.
    (3)     Adobe most strongly endorses PDF creation from InDesign via the export function, not printing to PostScript and distilling. Such PostScript is optimized strictly for printing and not for PDF file creation.

  • To restrict Issue for production than planned qty in production order

    Hi Experts,
In my scenario, the production staff will prepare production order and right click in production order document and select "Issue Components" option to Issue raw materials for production floor. After issuing the raw materials to production floor closes the "Issue for Production" document and now we have "Production Order" document open in screen. When he again select "Issue Components" option and issues the raw materials once again. Materials are issued once again wrongly. This happens since the production order document is not getting refresh after "Issue for Production" document is done.
Is there any way to restrict issue of raw materials than the planned qty.?
I have tried lot of ways to restrict this through SP. Please revert me an solution to this issue.
The procedure should trigger immediately when the "Issue Components" option is selected second time (If the raw materials are issued in full in first time itself). And it should allow only the qty which is to issued to production order qty (if they issue part issue to production order)
    Thanks in advance
    Raja.S

    Hi Neetu,
Thanks for your quick response. I have tried this query. But it is not blocking the issue for production document even the raw materials are issued already for the production order.
I'll explain my work flow again. The Production staff will prepare production order and then release the same and update the production order after changing  the status for "Release". Then he will right click the Mouse button and select "Issue Components" option and perform the Issue for Production process. He will issue the required raw material completely in one shot and add the Issue for Production document.
After adding the Issue for Production document he will close that document and now we will be in Production order document. Now our production order document will not get refreshed. Now the Production staff go for "Issue components" option, then it should not allow him to issue the components once again. But it is allowing him to issue components any number of times. there is no control.
If we browse the production order document to previous record and browse back to the same record then my Production order document get refreshed and now we can control the issue. But what should i do to control in the earlier case. Since they want to perfrom lot of production order, there is a chance to issue components for same production order more than one time before the production order document get refreshed.
Please provide me the SP to control this scenario.
    Thanks in advance.

  • How do I change the "gray" color selection for icons in Finder to brown?

Is there a way to change the selection of colors offered by the dropdown File menu for desktop and folder icons? I use a lot of color coding for the files and folders in my windows, and gray just looks like "dimmed out" to me.
I know how to get the color wheel in Microsoft Word (or the crayolas, or whatever).  Is there a way to do that for Finder as well, without a lot of technical talk (ranges, percentages, etc.) that I can't understand?  Thanks for any help out there!

Grey is not the only color showing up.
If you want more colors other than the ones found in Finder, you will need to use a 3rd party product.  Something like CandyBar will do the trick or download colorful folders and icons.  These softwares can be found on MacUpdate and by doing a Google search.

In the CO11N is possible do the moviment 261 for the component manage whitout the serial number?
Yes .It is possible to do the 261 whule perfoming CO11N for  production Order .Find belwo the set up requireed :
Backflash can done based on the following set up  to have the 261 while perfoming co11n .
1.In material master MRP2 view of the item , Backflash field should be kept -1-Alaways back Flash
2.In work Center where the routing operations are done , -Goto-Basic Data View -Back Flash Indicator -to be marked .
3.In Master Recipie Componenet Alocation Tab -Item Line -Back Flash Indicator to be ticked once assinged to a particualr operation .

  • Field /SAPAPO/MARM-GEWEI unit missing for product 000000008660000814 PAL

    Hi Experts,
I found CIF error in SMQ2. The error states "Field /SAPAPO/MARM-GEWEI unit missing for product 000000008660000814 PAL '.
I checked the data in MM03 , where alternate unit of measure is PAL. One PAL Is 96000 EA.and i found  GRoss Weight and NET Weight is showing Zero.
    I checked the same in /sapapo/mat1 , it is showing 1PAL = 5760 ea.and i found  GRoss Weight(2, 078.440 and NET Weight(1,800.32) .
How to rectify thsi error. Please let me know.
    Thanks,
    Manasa.

    Hi Rishi,
Thanks. Please check teh OSS Notes Note 1519355 - Field /SAPAPO/MARM-GEWEI unit missing for product and advice me.I am pasting the same notes below.
    Summary
    Symptom
Field /SAPAPO/MARM-GEWEI unit missing for product
    Other terms
    /SAPAPO/MAT067, UOM
    Reason and Prerequisites
The reason of the error is, that the 'Unit of Weight' is missing for the alternative unit of measure(UOM) in the material Master Data.
    Solution
    From R/3 perspective,
    If no gross or net weight is maintained in a unit of measure, it is not nessesary to maintain a unit of weight. However CIF in APO checks the field GEWEI for all entries of table MARM. If the field GEWEI is blank in any of the MARM entries then you will get the error message . The following are ways to correct this error;
    1) Delete the alternative UoM in APO for the product in /sapapo/mat1. Afterwards process the faulty queue and all alternative UOMs will be correctly available in APO and thus, the masterdata is consistent.
    2) Maintain the 'Unit of Weight' that is missing for the alternative units in the material masterdata in R/3. Afterwards retransfer the masterdata to APO.
3)use the userexit EXIT_SAPLCMAT_001 (where you can change
MARM and MARMX values) and maintain the missing 'Unit of Weight'so that MARM-GEWEI is filled before transfering the masterdata to APO.

  • Sources of supply for product

    Hi all
Why can i remove assigned vendor in the shopping cart (Sources of supply for product/Service Agent) when i choose a product from the "Internal Good/services" way, but i can´t remove it when i choose it from the SRM-MDM Catalog way???? the thing is that we have a contract for this product but in different ways we can remove and another way we can not...
We dont know if this is a bug... or what.
Obviously we are testing with the same product.
    Note: we are using SRM 5.0. (SRM_PLUS - SAPKIBK012; SRM_SERVER - SAPKIBKT12; ST-PI - SAPKITLQI5); SRM-MDM Catalog 2.0 SP03 Patch01.
    Plase help.

    Pp.

    Hi Jose,
the catalog consists the agreed price list of the products with one specific vendor, therefore neither the vendor can be removed nor the price can be changed.
    This is the standard behavior.

To test, I am list listing the Production Order Document Number and the Due Date. Looking to list only the Production Order and Due Date from a prompted Production Order.
I tried both Cell Expansion and Row Expansion using the parameter you suggested. Cell Expansion returns all documents, but with a document number of 0. Row expansion gives me an error.
I have captured all the screen shots and posted them to the web. If you wouldnt mind taking a quick look. I am sure something I am doing is off, but feel I am close with your help.

  • No Color Consistency

I'm on the verge of giving up any hope of CS3's color management
working consistently. But I'm tenacious, so let's give this one more
    go. Exhibit A:
    http://img167.imageshack.us/my.php?image=colorsquaresou2.png
Here's what I did. I created filled square in PS (1), exported it as a PS
PDF and viewed it in Acrobat (2), placed said PDF in an ID document
    (3) and finally exported that ID document as another PDF which was
    viewed in Acrobat (4).
The squares you see in the image above have been screengrabbed
whilst viewing in PS, ID, and Acrobat at each stage (1-4) described
above. Contrary to the claim below, I get different visible results in
    all three applications.
"[...] colors created in Photoshop CS3 and Illustrator CS3 match the
colors you see in InDesign CS3, Acrobat 8 Professional, and Reader 8."
    More details:
The Japan Web Coated (Ad) ICC profile was used for the working space
space during PS editing. Color settings were synchronized through Bridge.
Embedded profiles preserved. RGB working space: sRGB. CMYK working
space: Japan Web Coated (Ad). No conversion was used for exported PDFs.
All embedded profiles were included. Simulate black ink and overprint off in
Acrobat. No weird soft-proofing setups. Etc etc.
There are a million and one settings so I won't list them all.
Any explanation of this inconsistency would be much appreciated.

    > Setting your monitor profile to sRGB is always a mistake.
Ok, let's accept that for a moment.
    > Unlike non-color-managed applications, Photoshop uses your monitor
    > profile to convert the data it sends to your monitor. If you have a
    > properly, accurately, and often calibrated and profiled monitor,
    > then you and others can get an accurate rendition of your file.
    I agree with all that.
    > Setting two different uncalibrated and non-profiled monitors to
    > sRGB does in no way, shape or form mean the image is going to look
    > the same on both monitors.
No problem with that either. If you think I meant that before, then
obviously I did not explain myself clearly enough.
    > If you don't understand that, you have not even begun to wrap your
    > head around color management.
    > Since you're more interested in arguing than in learning or solving
    > your problem, there's not much that others can do to help you.
That's your assumption, rather confrontationally put, and it's
    untrue.
Perhaps what I've written is ambiguous and is being taken the
wrong way. Let me try to put it better.
My basic point (it may well be wrong and I'd love to know why
    if it is) is this:
If Illustrator and Photoshop are using the same color management
techniques, then they should open the same jpeg file, say, and
it would look the same in both programs. Each of the two programs
would perform a gamut mapping from the *same* working space
(synchronized with Bridge) to the *same* monitor profile space
(sRGB or any other) and in the *same* way. Given this identical
mapping, the operating system would receive from each program
the same RGB color values for each image.
According to this hypothesis, which may or may not be correct,
the particular monitor profile chosen has no effect on whether
the image in one program resembles the image in the other.
An analogy: suppose I have two pairs of spectacles made by
two opticians. Unfortunately the prescription is wrong, but
both opticians are given the same wrong prescription. And
let's suppose the glasses are made precisely according to
that prescription. In this analogy the prescription is a
bit like (not too much though) an inaccurate monitor profile.
Now, if I look at something with one pair, it is blurred or
distorted. If I look at that same thing with the other pair,
it is also blurred and distorted, but in the same way. The
scene looks identical. Of course, that's not what I want
to see, a blurred scene, but at least I know the opticians
did the same thing, functionally speaking. At least I know
there is some consistency in the way these opticians work.
So, at the risk of unnecessary repetition: I'm not interested
in the absolute accuracy of colors at this point. I'm merely
trying to get an understanding of why one Adobe color-managed
program is producing different on-screen results to another:
same input + same color mapping functions =/= same output?
By the way, I have discovered something that is different
about Illustrator. Monitor profile changes apparently have
no effect until Illustrator is restarted. In Photoshop the
    changes have immediate effect.
