Color Correcting Different Parts of an Image Differently

Newbie question, I know. If possible, just point me to the proper term for this and I'll figure it out from there.
Talking head interview. Guy's sitting in a chair slightly left of frame center; further left is a dark brown wall; to the right is a large window with white semi-opaque curtains. Cameraman is asleep or brain-dead. The image is completely washed out on the right, where the window is; the right side of his face is acceptably lit by the light from the window; the left side of his face is in near total shadow. Imagine my displeasure.
If I adjust the black level to about zero and the white level to about 90%, I get a nice green check mark in my excess luma indicator. The white window looks fine. But dude is even darker than he was before. What I need is a way to keep the right side of the image (the window) looking good and ALSO lighten up the left and center (the left side of his face and his dark suit (what color I can't even tell, it's so dark).
Is there a way to do this? Not so concerned about colors per se; more about dark and light. The limit effect doesn't seem to be what I want.
Thanks.

Thanks, Randy. That's ingenious, but it doesn't seem to work very well, since the finished image looks like Frankenstein's monster, with half the guy's face looking one way and the other half another way. But ingenious.
I don't mind using the limit effect if that is the best way to deal with my little problem. Just trying to get a consensus on what to do, after I put a contract out on this shooter.
Thanks.

  • I need to replace a color on my image with a specific color from another part of the image.  How?!

I have spent over 2 hours trying to figure out how to replace a color on one part of my image with a specific color shown on another part of the image.  So far I have been able to go to "Replace Color" on my Adobe Photoshop version, but it seems that I can only change the hue and brightness of the color that it currently is.  I need to use a specific color so this does not help me.  Does anyone know how to complete the task I am referring to?
Also, please keep in mind that I am using Adobe Photoshop 6.0, not a fancy cs version or anything.  So it's pretty old school...
Any help/feedback is greatly appreciated!  Thank you.

    Hi brookehelene,
You might consider making a selection the object and using a color fill layer set to the color blend mode instead of replace color.
I used the same picture as kendallplant did and changed the color on the same flower by sampling the pink color from the flower to the right)
(click on the screenshots below for larger views)
    1. Select>Color Range
(i used color range because the dialog is somewhat similar to the replace color dialog, except one is making a selection instead of replacing a color)
(there are many other ways to make the selection such as the magic wand, so if your more familar with the other selection tools you can use those instead to make your selection)
    2. Use the eyedroppers and fuzziness slider in the color range dialog to make the selection of the object.
(in the screenshot below the white areas are selected and black areas are not)
(your selection probably won't be perfect, but you can paint on the layer mask to refine the selection)
    3. After you press the okay in the color range dialog you'll see the selection (marching ants)
At the bottom of the layers palette press the Create New Fill or Adjustment Layer icon
to reveal a list and choose Solid Color.
Then use the eyedropper to sample a color from your image and press ok.
Change the Blend mode for the color fill layer to Color (top of the layers palette)
    4. As you can see a lot has been selected besides the flower.
To refine the areas of color, paint on the layer mask with the paintbrush tool.
Use white to add the color or black to subtract the color
You can press the D key on the keyboard to get the default colors (black and white) in the toolbox
and press the X key to switch between the two when painting on the layer mask.
Even though the above takes longer you can easily change the color or modify the areas that you want to change the color on.
To change the color you can double click on the color fill icon in the layers panel.
You can also use other layer blend modes besides color such as hue, so you might try some of the others and see what they do.

  • Color Correction: different result in Frame Viewer and Canvas

    Hi all:
I´m doing some color correction with the 3 way CC tool and i´m having troubles with Frame Viewer: the results are not the same in the Canvas and Frame Viewer. The colors in Frame Viewer are a little bit more saturated and they are also a bit darker. I´ m talking about the half Frame Viewer that is supposed to show me the final result after the color correction.
Mi footage is in HDV 720 25p. Anyone know what is happening????

You'll probably find them lined up at your Chevy dealer.

  • Color correcting certain parts of a video

    Hello,
I am sorta new to Premiere, having come from Final Cut pro. I have a video that has spots that neec color correction. How do I correct those spots, without correcting the whole video?
    Any help is appreciated.

I would suggest doing that in After Effects, not Premiere.
-Import your footage and create a new composition.
-Create an adjustment layer with your corrections (color corrector, curves, etc)
-Draw a mask around the region you want the color correction to actually show up. The rest will be unaffected by the correction.
You can create as many seperate adjustment layers as you want to correct each spot within your frame.
Then export the footage and bring it back into Premiere (or use dynamic linking if your machine can handle it).
If you don't want to use AE or don't have it -- you can follow a similar process in Premiere.
-Select the clip you want to add correction to and make a copy of it. Place it on the track above your original clip.
-Apply your color correction effects to the clip on the top track. Initially it will apply to the full frame and that's OK.
-Once you are done with making corrections apply a Garbage Matte to the top clip (four-point garbate matte, eight...sixteen...whatever).
-Adjust the matte to the shape of the area you want to correct.
(note: to edit the garbage matte points, you have to select the effect in the Video Effects panel)
You should be left with a color corrected region defined by the matte itself. Just repeat until you have all the different areas corrected.

  • I want to correct only part of my image. What tools do I use?

CORRECTING PART OF YOUR PHOTO – USING SELECTIONS
When you want to modify or adjust a specific area of a photo or image, you need to make a selection first. Once an area is selected you can use Photoshop image adjustment tools.
This video covers  the process of selecting an area of the photo (the sky only) as well as making  that selected area darker using what's called an "Adjustment layer".
Note: If you need to know more about layers before watching this video you can check out: "What are layers, and Why do I need them?".
Selections are important in Photoshop because they allow you to isolate an area of your image not only to adjust color or tone, but also to copy, cut, scale, or mask (hide) a part of your photo. It's good to get familiar with the kinds of selection tools that exist in Photoshop and when to use them.

After creating the mask and applying adjustment, you can also adjust and change layer mask using selection tools or, the most common way, using brush tools.
To have a more accurate preview of what are you doing, Alt + click on the layer mask thumbnail to show the mask in the image area.
At this point, you will have a layer mask on your screen in large view, so it is easy to fine tune it, but you wont see how that affects your image.
To seean  instant preview how changes on layer mask affects the adjustments, use New Window for (name of your image) from Window > Arrange.

  • Color correction on magenta skin tones / white shirt

I want to color correct a shot that is very blue/ magenta.
I would like the skin tones to be less magenta and more orange/yellow.
I get the best results by adding yellow on the Midtones and Shadows.
My problem is that the Highlights are going yellow, specially a white shirt. I get a better result by by then adding blue on the Highlights. I'm wondering if it's the right thing to do... Also, some Midtones are still too magenta.
I could isolate the skin tones as secondaries, but still, I have to color correct other parts of the image.
Any tip? Should I use the advanced settings?
I know my question as no miracle answer and that color correction should be done by a pro, but I would appreciate any suggestion, thanks.

I don't know, what does your eye tell you?
Before anyone can suggest any sort of solution, you need to provide a still as Mr. Owens asked for and then provide some direction for what you want.
No 2 people on the face of the earth see exactly the same. Color is entirely subjective. If you like what you're doing (I would ask, how you're seeing anything accurately from an iMac) then who cares what anyone else thinks? Unless, someone is paying you for your talent, then you'd best have the best rig money can buy as anything less is a lie.

  • Sequence color correction

I am color correcting different clips in my sequence in order to have all the footage look the same. Is there some kind of graph or something else that can show me what's going with colors in my entire sequence so I can do this more precise? Do I have to use Color for that?

I'm not aware of any feature that does what you're looking for.
You could use the search feature to locate all clips with the same name...in the sequence, set in/out at head/tails, hit command-f, type in file name and change "Where" to 'From In to Out', then click on 'Find All'.
Depending on how your project is set up, you could also control-click on a clip in the browser and select 'Label' and give it a color lable. This would assist in locating certain shots, that would benefit from a global color correction.
I occasionally use both procedures when cutting 1-hour multiclips, by setting up a 'master' color correction for say...Cam1 CU or Cam4 OTS XWS..., apply it, copy it, then paste to all instances of the clip. However, I find that each shot ends up requiring some level of tweaking due to slight changes in color and luminance shifts/intensities, caused by differences in framing and movements in the frame.
    Hope that helps,
    K

  • Different color sample from eyedropper with linked image

I have an RGB image Adobe RGB 1998 Embedded photoshop file linked into an RGB illustrator document. Illustrator color settings are set to Adobe RGB 1998. Eye dropper is set to point sample. When photoshop linked file is eye drop sampled, the RGB numbers that are read with the eye dropper are not producing the same color that the Photoshop file has in it's native app. When the same task is tried in Indesign, the numbers read perfectly. What is happening in illustrator? Same color settings in all three applications.

I don't use Lightroom, but on the Photoshop display side
You need to determine how your apps deal with tagged and untagged images, especially what Default profile they apply-assume-assign when the profile is absent, stripped and/or ignored.
If a thumbnail in OSX Finder shows the problem, that is a big clue because Finder thumbnails are not color managed (Finder is assuming Monitor RGB).
    I recommend going here
    www.gballard.net/photoshop/pdi_download/
    and downloading the iPhotoTESTfolder.zip
That series contains tagged and untagged verisions of AppleRGB, AdobeRGB, sRGB, ProPhotoRGB.
First, look at the image icons in finder (they are all over the place).
Next, drag the download folder into Bridge and observe the thumbnail colors (Bridge assumes sRGB on untagged images)...
    +++++++
If your problem apps are displaying color the same as image icons in Finder, then either your app is not colormanaged or the file does not contain an embedded profile.
    +++++++
    PS:
OSX Safari is a great app for testing JPEG files because it will either read an embedded profile or it will apply the default monitor profile (exactly where I am pointing you to) -- just drag your icon into an open Safari window...

  • Reconnecting (substituting) "different" color corrected media

    Hello,
I am now calmly writing this post after three days of pulling my HAIR out trying to do a SIMPLE reconnect of media files.  BUT the new color corrected media does not have audio and my rough cut's media does have audio, so the reconnect media function will not work.
I've tried everything.  There MUST be a way for me to get my color corrected files into this sequence.  Shoot, I CAN'T EVEN MANUALLY COPY THE IN'S AND OUTS BECAUSE THERE'S NO DARN IN AND OUT IN THE EVENT BROWSER! (Well, I was calm there for a second . . .)
To make matters even MORE difficult, I can not open certain clips in the "clip timeline" to do a replace because they have a little "-v1" added to their name (Which I can't find anywhere in the manual - or anywhere else online for that matter) I'm guessing it's because I referenced those clips in After Effects which BROKE THE ridiculous connection that FCPX ENFORCES. So I had to reimport those clips - and HOW IN THE HECK some of my transcoded ProRes files got moved into the Original files folder is beyond me.
I am an Avid certified editor, and have spent years on FCP.  I realize there are some people buckling down and relearning their craft on FCPX, others are jumping ship, but I am an audio engineer and entrepeneur and IT IS SO FRUSTRATING having to relearn SIMPLE functions to programs I already know as well as learn various new applications.
There I feel a little better now.
Can someone please help me attach these clips to my edited sequence?
    Thank you SO much.
    Peace

    Hi Andy,
    Thank you for your response!
Please do not find my opinion offensive - it's just my opinion but I do not think that it is not unreasonable to expect FCPX to accept my new media and replace it.  That's what all professional non-linear editors have been able to do up until this point in time, have they not?  It's been the workflow for thousands if not millions of editors worldwide for years has it not? (And I am sincerely and honestly asking you these questions, I am not trying to be smart or sarcastic. Please correct me if I am wrong so that I may re-evaluate my attitude and expectations).
I think that it is okay to be frustrated and what I'm most frustrated with is the fact that they called this application Final Cut instead of "Imovie Pro" and discontinued my main program that I've known and loved for 12 years.  I have a brand new Mac pro that I paid close to $10,000 for with RAM and all - and my only "Apple" option is to edit my movies in a glorified $300 consumer app.
So, again thank you for at least telling me that this is not possible.  I will re-edit the entire project with the new color corrected media now that I know that it's not possible to substitute.
    Sincerely,
    Skyko

  • Colors are Different in Safari then in IE or Firefox...

    Hi All,
I am trying to put together my first website. I am using a specific BG color, the problem is that this color is appearing differently in Safari then in IE or Firefox. IE and Firefox display the color correctly, but the Safari color is off. Any ideas?

Thanks for that - might have realised this a lot earlier if it didn't work in Safari!
I assume I just need some CSS like:
    .formbutton
      background-image: image1.jpg;
    .formbutton :hover
      background-image: image2.jpg;
    And:
    <input type="submit" name="KT_Insert1" id="Send" value="Send message" class="formbutton" />

  • Colors are different between Lightroom and Photoshop Elements

I have a new monitor and I have the SyderPro4 calbration software.  My monitor is the Dell UltraSharp U2713HM.  When calibrated with the Syder my colors are different when I go into different programs.  The same photo looks different in Lightroom than it does in Photoshop Elements. When I export the picture from Lightroom to Elements the picture becomes very orange. I have already talked to Dell and to Datacolor about my issue and they both are telling me this shouldn't be happening. When I uninstall my calibration software my problem goes away, and the colors of the images stay consistant between the two programs. Does anybody have any advice to what maybe wrong?

I am having this problem too.
my site www.redsmartie.com looks fine on everyone elses computer but on mine the red background #660000 is not displaying right on the jpg images
    see here http://homepage.mac.com/redsmartie/colourerror.png
I have rgb colour profiles managed by a Pantone Huey device and haven't previously noted a problem. This was added recently so I recreated the images which corrected things on my screen but made the red around the images too dark for everyone else.
The images were created in Photoshop so I changed the photoshop profile back to CinemaDisplay that it previously was on and now everyone else is ok but my screen shows the red around the images much to light.
I really need some help with this as its a disaster waiting to happen on work I do for other people, especially if I'm producing work that looks right on my setup but is wrong for everyone else!

  • Different color in different adobe applications!

I noted a difference in color between Lightroom and Photoshop CS4.
If I export the PSD file from Lightroom as .jpg with Adobe RGB profile and then open it in PS I get a different color than if I open the PSD file with same profile!
    Very strange indead.
My system is calibrated, monitor and printer, and I get excellent results. I use Adobe RGB throughout. Color is set in Bridge Creative suite color setting. All proof colors are unchecked. The problem is that the files appear different and print different if different applications.
It seams that Lightroom, Preview, Acrobat and Indesign, (even the small thumbnail in Finder) all share same color. (With minor noticeable difference).
However Photoshop looks very different. More saturated.
    Can someone explain please?

    +++++++
If your problem apps are displaying color the same as image icons in Finder, then either your app is not colormanaged or the file does not contain an embedded profile.
    +++++++
    PS:
OSX Safari is a great app for testing JPEG files because it will either read an embedded profile or it will apply the default monitor profile (exactly where I am pointing you to) -- just drag your icon into an open Safari window...
