Color overlay on opaque pixels of transparant image

Hi everyone!
I'm having a little problem here... I have loaded a gif image (a bufferedimage) in my program and I would like to have a color overlay on it. However, the overlay should only reside on the opaque pixels and not on the transparant parts of the image.
I have looked for about an hour on this board to find the solution to my problem, but I haven't found anything useful. I did find the following, but it's not for a bufferedimage :(

Thanks, Randy. That's ingenious, but it doesn't seem to work very well, since the finished image looks like Frankenstein's monster, with half the guy's face looking one way and the other half another way. But ingenious.
I don't mind using the limit effect if that is the best way to deal with my little problem. Just trying to get a consensus on what to do, after I put a contract out on this shooter.

    According to the API, "getSample()" may be used for this purpose. But, how do you know which color band a band index parameter in getSample() refers to? Does band index of 0 always refer to the RED band? Does band index of 1 refer to the GREEN band? etc.
    I'd greatly appreciate any help you may be able to provide.

    In the print dialog underneath the settings for number of copies and print range you should see a dropdown menu probably called Layout. If you don't see that look for a button labeled Details and click it.
    Under the Layout menu you should find an option labeled Printer where you will find Printer specific options. Look for something there. You might also find an option called Color which may have options you are looking for.
    If this doesn't help, go to the printer manufacturer's website and look for answers there.

  • How to make transparant images with more then 8 bit color?

    I know that one can use *.gif images in order to make a transparent image. But *.gif images have only 8 bit color depth. Is there a way to display for example *.bmp images and making one color transparent? Or by using a mask like in C++?

    Use the PNG format for your images. It supports a color depth of 24 bits/pixel as well as 8 bits/pixel and got an alpha layer so you can have transparent and semi-transparent areas in your image.
    You can load PNG images in Java as easily as you do with GIF and JPG images.

  • Colors shift when a PDF file contains transparent image

    Hello,
    I tried to programatically set a soft mask to an image by using the Addobe PDF Library, in order to make part of the image transparent. The image color space is RGB. I used PDEImageSetSMask() funtcion for setting the mask. I also have a PDF file that was created in the same way but without the part of the code that sets the mask. Therefore this PDF contains the same image as not transparent.
    When I open two files in Adobe Reader 9.2.0 the colors are not the same. The colors in the file which contains the transparent image are a bit darker. The colors are different not only inside the image box, but in all page area. I also tried to open the same file in GSView and there was no such problem.
    Can I fix this by changing the Adobe reader preferences, or this is a problem in the code that genereates the PDF?

    You need to set the transparency blending space of the page to RGB, since the default blending space is CMYK (hence the color shift).  You do this by adding a transparency group dictionary to the page's dictionary when creating the PDF.

    first of all you need to get the library to transfer your image to java.awt.image.BufferedImage object.
    I know many such libraries. Its depends of what kind of image you have: jpeg, gif, png or other.
    And when you get the BufferedImage of you picture using library, then you can get the color of any pixel in image using int BufferedImage.getRGB(int x, int y) as integer value.

    problem with exporting an InDesign Document to a PDF and printing. My transparent images are showing up with a darker background than what they are placed on. Know how to help?

    There were a few other things that I had to make sure of also.
    Solution:
    Images placed in InDesign that were made in Photoshop or another program should be in ckmy format.  The background needs to be in the same ckmy.   Transparency blend must be set at CKMY, then Transparency Flattener presents must be set at Rasters/Vectors: 0 Line art and text resolution: 600, Gradient and mesh resoltuion 300.  Exporting to PDF must be done under present PDF/X-4:2008 Compatibility: Acbrobat 7.

  • Why do I get a colored shadow behind shadow and feather transparency areas when printing?

    I've been pulling my hair out over this and finally went to my printer to ask if they had insight as to why this is happening. I'll include his reply here but would like to hear your expert opinions too!
    When laying out a file in InDesign, I do a lot of overlapping, feather and some drop shadow and always get a colored shadow behind the transparency area when printing out from a pdf. These files are being designed for print, which is what I thought InDesign was created for - as an updated alternative to Quark and Pagemaker? Here is what the printer says:
    "Ive taken a look at the file in question and the issues this lady is experiencing can not be resolved in InDesign. What she needs to do is build the background image with color overlays all in Photoshop as a Layered PSD. Then flatten it and pull it in to InDesign as a Tiff. Then she can place her text over the top of it. She needs to use image masks on the color overlays - for the areas she does not what the color to violate.
    What it comes down to is these fancy design effects out of InDesign and Illustrator should never be used for printing. They can be used for web design. Reason is, they cause RIP problems. Things fall off the file and transparent areas go away just to name a few. This happens all the time."
    I would appreciate any other viewpoints here. Can I really NOT use the shadow and feather functions in InDesign for print? Are there any other ways to approach this problem other than what is being advised here. It is SO much easier to produce the entire file in InDesign.

    There is a 1 inch blur drop shadow on the black and white temple image; a 1 inch feather on the black and white screened back image behind the main text box; and no drop shadow or feather on the map at top right, yet I get a colored shadow behind all 3 of these areas when I export the indd file to pdf and print that out. The fact that I get a shadow behind the map puzzles me.

    The CMYK/RGB question is actually pretty complex, and depends to a great extent on how the final output is going to be produced.
    If the files are destined for a printing press, all RGB elements must be converted to CMYK prior to printing. You have the option of doing that before placing in ID, or during export to PDF, and there are pros and cons to both methods, but if you don't know until the last minute what the print conditions will be, the convert on export path is more flexible.
    Spot colors are a different matter. As far as I'm concerned, you should NEVER specify a spot color unless you are actually using spot ink on a press. A lot of inkjet and laser devices claim to be Pantone certified, but the reality is that even with expanded gamuts available using more than four inks, I'd estimate that better than half the Pantone solids are not reproducible as simulations that would satisfy me or my clients. The convert spot to process route should only be used, in my opinion, when you've designed a job properly to be printed using spot colors, and suddenly you have an output change or an added image that forces you to move to a process output. The last time I tried it, by the way, I had issues at the printer (the regular prepress guy was out of town, so I'm not sure what went wrong) and I ended up re-building the file with real process colors to get the transparency to work.
    But you mentioned that you are doing exhibition panels, which implies to me that they are probably NOT going on a press -- you need to do hundreds, or sometimes even thousands, of copies to make a press cost-effective compared to digital printing. I used to work in a large-format output bureau doing just this kind of work, and we used large inkjet plotters. In this case, mixed RGB and CMYK files are less of an issue since most plotters will handle either, and depending on if they have an internal or external RIP or none at all, you may actually get better color fidelity using RGB as CMYK colors may get converted in the RIP to the RGB values that the plotter understands, and then get converted back a second time to CMYK (CMYKOG or whatever ink combination is used) internally before the ink is sprayed. Only the print provider would be in a position to tell you the correct color space for the equipment.
    Which of course puts you at a bit of a disadvantage working with a client out of state who isn't supplying you with such necessary information as the correct output profiles for the job. It will be a miracle if the color is close.
    A final word about looking funky on screen. Just as many spot colors can't be well simulated in CMYK, many also cannot be displayed adequately on a monitor. The ONLY way to choose spot colors is with a swatch book, and that's what the press operator will be using to verify his work. Clients need to be educated about the differences in technology and the limitations of soft proofs.

  • Problem with transparent image

    Hi everyone,
    I'm having problem with embedding transparent image to PDF. Thin border appears  when viewing the document with Adobe Reader, Adobe Acrobat Pro and even with Foxit Reader. But there are no such border in the image.
    After some experiments I found that this border appears on the edge of fully transparent black and fully opaque white areas. And changing fully transparent black color to fully transparent white removes the border.
    Is this an expected behaviour of Adobe Reader or is it a bug? Could anyone explain in which other cases such artifacts may appear?

    It is related to the source from which PDF document is generated. Anyway if writing the image as is without pattern the problem still remains.

  • Transparent image/graph

    I've been reading a number of posts, but yet to find a clear answer to my problem.
    My ultimate goal is to have an image and a graph, one overlayed on top of the other (whether it is a transparent picture on a graph, or vice versa, it doesn't matter).  I just want to have both images roughly 50% transparent.  Imagine a gps image with a topography intensity map laid over the top... that's what I'm going for.
    From my experience so far, I've found that the transparency levels of the  3D controllers are unchangeable.  Although the transparency levels of the intensity & (x,y) graph shells are changeable, I haven't been able to change the transparency of the graph that it projects.  On the other hand, I've been able to make an image compltetely transparent, but not partially.  I realize that I might be able to import a partially transparent image into LabVIEW and work from their, but the program that I'm making now, will only deal with unaltered images (aka, not pre-transparent images).
    If anyone has any ideas, that'd be great.

    Thanks for the quick and complete response.  I think I understand what you're trying to do, but unfortunately I'm not getting the program to function properly.  The image that is generated is a blank.  One of the things I wasn't sure of, was the slider.  Is that just supposed to change the color intensity of the image?  Another question... which might be a very obvious one, but where is the 'new picture' function?  I've been looking through the function menu and have been unable to locate it.
    Hopefully I can try and figure the rest of this program out.  I attached a sample program that i found in the forums that is helping me get a little closer (this one puts an image behind/in front/ or in between a graph).  I'm still not convinced that this program will work with an intensity graph, but I'm going to give it a try.

    1. use a PixelGrabber to convert the image into a pixel array
    2. (assuming pixel array called pixelArray) :

    How to create transparent image at run-time? I mean I want to create a (new) transparent image1, then show other (loaded) transparent image2 to image1, then show image1 to a DC. The problem is - image1 has non-transparent background...

    i'm not sure, but you can set the alpha value to 0 in all pixels which are 'in' the background..

    Please see details of my code below. What I am doing is trying to obtain the pixels for an image. there is an initial image of a certain size, which is then split into smaller portions.

    Hi, the error message I am getting is (i'm printing out the x,y values and width and height so that I can see what going on) the whole image is 512x512, and I am grabbing pixels for squares of 64x64, but when it gets to 256 it throws an exception. I don'd understand why

  • White box behind transparent images with drop shadow in InDesign CC 2014 (v.10) but not in InDesign CC (v.9)

    Hi all,
    Please can you help? No matter what settings I use in my print options in InDesign CC 2014 (v.10), ALL transparent images with a drop shadow are printing with a white box behind the image. If I remove the drop shadow, all prints fine. I know this is an old issue that happens with ID sometimes but I have been lucky enough to never have had it happen to me before! (All images are regular flattened TIFF images with clipping paths).
    Also, feathered edges are not printing correctly and are sharp instead of feathered.
    When I export the document to IDML and open it up in InDesign CC (v.9) all prints perfectly with no white boxes and feathered edges prints perfectly as well. I have compared all of the print settings (including color management, transparency flattener, etc.) between both versions and they are exactly the same. I am printing to a Xerox color laser printer. Can anyone offer any advice?

    Okay...false alarm! It turns out that the issue was with my PRINTER settings (the settings you customize after hitting the “Printer” button at the bottom of the Print dialogue box in ID CC. I thought I had triple checked this but it seems there was one setting I missed earlier…adjusting the print brightness seemed to cause the issue. SO GLAD to know it was not InDesign…20 or so sheets/prints later….and thankful to know what was causing the issue! Thank you so much Steve for helping at any rate:) Much appreciated:)

    first convert your image object to bufferedImage object. then use above method.

  • Skin smoothing stopped working and color overlay

    Hi All,
    Been tearing my hair out.
    The skin smoothing tool has stopped working completely across all projects. If I select "color overlay" in the gears menu, sometimes the existing smooth brush strokes appear in red,.. but mostly they don't.
    ** I can't add any new brush strokes ** they simply do not appear. Interestingly, if you select brush strokes you can see the strokes but the actual skin smooth filter isn't applied to the mask! WEIRD! You can also select invert and the filter is applied to the whole image - but you cannot manipulate the mask at all.
    I've reinstalled Aperture and I've also rebuilt the library but nothing seems to work.
    Background: I'm running Aperture 3.4.3 on Macbook Retina with latest OS, 16Gb/500SSD - nothing else and I'm shooting with a Nikon D800 in RAW.
    Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? I have a sweaty model that needs airbrushing ASAP!

    Matthew, does it work, if you use a different Aperture library? Then repair your Aperture library.
    If it does not even work for a different Aperture library,try working from a different user account. Can you use the brushes there? If yes, remove your Aperture User Preferences from your User Library:
    The user library is hidden.  To reveal it, use the Finder's "Go" menu.
    Click somewhere on your empty Desktop to bring the Finder forward, then you'll see "Go" in the Finder's main menu bar.
    Then hold down the options key ⌥ until "library" appears in the drop down menu. Click Library to open.  Remove the file
    your Home Folder/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Aperture.plist.
