Column  format using SQL

HI Thanks for the reply.
IF I want to format the OPP_VALUE column How do I do format using sql
Do I have to do it when I create the table? I loaded these data using spread sheet.
I tried
SELECT distinct tab.CUSTOMER, tab.SC, tab.HOURS,tab.OPP_VALUE, tab.opp_val_rank
FROM
(SELECT CUSTOMER, SC, HOURS, column OPP_VALUE format 999,999 OPP_VALUE, DENSE_RANK() OVER (order by OPP_VALUE DESC) opp_val_rank
FROM FMW_ANALY) tab
WHERE opp_val_rank<=10;
I'm getting error ORA-00936: missing expression

Hi I'm getting the following Result when I run the query
SELECT distinct tab.CUSTOMER, tab.SC, tab.HOURS,tab.OPP_VALUE, tab.opp_val_rank
FROM
(SELECT CUSTOMER, SC, HOURS, to_char(OPP_VALUE,'999,999') OPP_VALUE, DENSE_RANK() OVER (order by OPP_VALUE DESC) opp_val_rank
FROM FMW_ANALY) tab
WHERE opp_val_rank<=10;

    MM/DD/YY
    YYYY/DD/MM
    Question:- how do i check whether all dates in date column are in above format or not using sql query?
    sorry if it is a very simple question since I am new to sql and trying to learn ......Thanks for the answers from the group............

    In short, NO, it's not possible.  If you store dates correctly in the database as DATE datatype then you don't have this problem.  If you store them as VARCHAR2 you have a problem.
    So, you get a date of 20092012
    Is that 20th September 2012?  or is it 20th December 2009?
    What about...
    11-Jan-12
    Is that 11th January 2012 or 12th January 2011?
    Dates should never be stored on the database as strings.  That is why Oracle gives you a DATE datatype so you can store them properly.
    Also, when dates are passed from an application to the database, the application should be passing them as DATE datatype, and the application interface should be designed to accept dates from the user in a format specific to their country/locality and it would then know what that format is and automatically convert it to a DATE datatype before it gets anywhere near the database or any SQL.

  • Multiple date formats using sql developer

    Hello!
    i have 2 date fields in a table.. one is populated using trunc(<date1>) and the other is to_date(<date2>,'YYYYMMDD HH24MISS'). We want <date1> to display as MM/DD/YYYY and <date2> to display as MM/DD/YYYY HH:MI:SS AMPM. When we set the date format under Preference -> Database -> NLS parameter in SQL Developer with a time format it adds 12:00:00 to <date1>, if we take it out, it drops the time in <date2>. What can we do?
    thanks!

    I think what the original poster wanted was to display the two date columns using different formats in the table "Data" tab and AFAIK that is not possible. Setting a date format in the Preferences accomplishes the same thing as the statement
    ALTER SESSION SET NLS_DATE_FORMAT='<some format>';
    in command-line SQL*Plus. To do what the OP wants they'll need to create a view that has a SELECT something like this:
    SELECT TO_CHAR( date1, 'YYYY-MM-DD' ) date1
    , TO_CHAR( date2, 'YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS') date2
    FROM some_table;
    One thing the OP needs to keep in mind is that the DATE datatype stores both date and time together. If they insert a date alone, the time defaults to midnight. (This is stated in the Oracle SQL Reference.)

  • Column format for Describe

    Hi guys,
    I got a small question here.
    The question is regarding the column formating in SQL prompt.
    basically we can use DESCRIBE <table_name> to see the columns existed in a table.
    the column headers appear are "Name", "Null", and "Type"
    if you don't do any linesize and pagesize setting, the result of the describe is good enough, but the thing is when you set both linesize and pagesize to 1000, in linux you'll get a really screwed result of that DESCRIBE syntax.
    in windows of course this might not happen if you set the screen buffer size to 1000 as well.
    so, come to the real question:
    How can I format the column header for DESCRIBE syntax?
    Regards,
    Adhika

    the column NAME in the view v$tablespace is already of datratype varchar2(30). So when you set the sql*plus printing of this column to format a30, there would be no change.
    test the command with format a5 and you'll see some difference.Actually you won't...
    SQL> desc v$tablespace;
    Name                                      Null?    Type
    TS#                                                NUMBER
    NAME                                               VARCHAR2(30)
    INCLUDED_IN_DATABASE_BACKUP                        VARCHAR2(3)
    BIGFILE                                            VARCHAR2(3)
    FLASHBACK_ON                                       VARCHAR2(3)
    ENCRYPT_IN_BACKUP                                  VARCHAR2(3)
    SQL> col name format a10
    SQL> desc v$tablespace;
    Name                                      Null?    Type
    TS#                                                NUMBER
    NAME                                               VARCHAR2(30)
    INCLUDED_IN_DATABASE_BACKUP                        VARCHAR2(3)
    BIGFILE                                            VARCHAR2(3)
    FLASHBACK_ON                                       VARCHAR2(3)
    ENCRYPT_IN_BACKUP                                  VARCHAR2(3)But setting linesize does effect the output column size.
    SQL> set linesize 100
    SQL> desc v$tablespace;
    Name                                                  Null?    Type
    TS#                                                            NUMBER
    NAME                                                           VARCHAR2(30)
    INCLUDED_IN_DATABASE_BACKUP                                    VARCHAR2(3)
    BIGFILE                                                        VARCHAR2(3)
    FLASHBACK_ON                                                   VARCHAR2(3)

    Two options that come to mind. Others exist.
    #1 - {thread:id=474031}, which is basically storing the XML in an Object Relational structure for parsing
    #2 - Dump the XML into either an XMLType based table or column and use SQL (with XMLTable) to create a view that parses the data. This would be the same as the view shown in the above post.
    Don't use sql*loader to parse the XML. I was trying to find a post from mdrake about that but couldn't. In short, sql*loader was not build as an XML parser so don't try to use it that way.

    Hi, thanks for the response.
    No, I do not have "set heading off" somewhere. What I pasted into my original post is the entire script that I am running from the worksheet, and I am not using a startup script.
    Odd that the column formatting works for you, yet the list of unsupported commands that you pointed me to says that col[umn] is not supported. Help column from within sqldev contradicts that documentation, showing that col[umn] is supported, but only for the "NEW_V[ALUE] syntax."
    Wow, there's nothing like enabling the most obscure keyword just to be able to say that a function is supported. Oh, well, at least the scripts that I download from the web run now. In 3.0 they died with a hard error just because the col[umn] keyword was used.

  • How to store a PDF in a BLOB column, then select/search it using SQL?

    We have a simple requirement.
    (1.) We have an Oracle 10g DB.
    (2.) We want to store PDFs/MS Word docs inside BLOB column in a table.
    (3.) We need to show PDF/MS Word content to the user, without opening the PDFs/MS World like we normally do (i.e. Using PDV reader/ MS Word).
    (4.) i.e. We need to use SQL statements and
          (a.) Get all contents of the PDF/MS WORD doc.
          (b.) Search for specific strings inside these docs in the BLOB columns.How to do this pls? Code sample would be really great.

    Really? You mean as opposed to a requirement that might actually be doable?Could be that simple is used as in stupid ? Like in, "+look at this simply idiotic requirement, blah.. blah...+"? ;-)
    @user12240205:
    BLOBs contains binary data. Not text data. How do you propose to search binary data for strings?
    PDF and Word formats include actual text strings and identifiers as part of the formatting. How do you propose that this be identified and ignored when searching for specific strings in the document's content?
    PL/SQL does not have the ability to take a page from a PDF/Word document, highlight the search string, and display that to the client. A format-parser is needed to parse the PDF/Word format and generate that as content (e.g. HTML or XML) that can be rendered by a client. How do you propose PL/SQL serves up search strings that it found, when it cannot interpret the document format? (cannot even say what page, section or paragraph, that search string occurs)
    Documents can be loaded via the DBMS_LOB interface. Either from the db server's file system, or by the client supplying the document as chunks for "write appending" to a BLOB. See Oracle® Database PL/SQL Packages and Types Reference guide for details.
    Text search and document indexing are supported by an Oracle feature called Content Management<a> (which includes interMedia, UltraSearch, Oracle Text, etc).
    Oracle also supports (on Window server platforms), the Microsoft Component Object Model (COM). COM interfaces (such as COM for Word) can be used for specialised processing (e.g. searching Word documents). Oracle's COM feature allows one to interface directly with external s/w (e.g. MS Word) via its COM interface.

  • Set Column width in query (not using SQL*Plus)

    How can I Set Column width in query
    I understand you can set column width using
    column col1 FORMAT A5
    select col1 from table1;But this only works in SQL*Plus
    I want to be able to do this in a regular SQL query window (not in SQL*Plus), how can I do it.....
    I am using a 'SQL window' in PL/SQL Developer IDE
    and when I use this syntax it says:
    ORA-00900: Invalid SQL statement
    Any suggestions are appreciated...
    thanks,
    M.

    Did you try using RPAD or LPAD functions? They fill the unfilled part of a string with character you provide... either on right or left side depending on what function you use.
    e.g.
    SELECT RPAD('Smith', 10, ' ') Name FROM dual;http://www.adp-gmbh.ch/ora/sql/rpad.html

  • CSS to format a textarea column in an SQL report

    I'm using the following CSS class called "fixed" to format a multi-line column (textarea) in a standard SQL report (Column Formatting Attribute: CSS Class). Each row is now hard coded to a height of 40px or about 4 rows with a scrol bar. If the row has no data in it I'd like to default the row to a height of 1. Is it possible to do that?
    <style type="text/css">
    .fixed {display:inline-block; width:150px; height:40px; overflow-y:scroll; font-size:9px;}
    </style>
    regards

    For a less speculative response, provide complete information on the environment and any restrictions therein:
    <li>Full APEX version
    <li>Full DB version and edition
    <li>Web server architecture (EPG, OHS or APEX listener)
    <li>Browser(s) and version(s) used
    <li>Theme
    <li>Template(s)
    <li>Region type(s)
    and a reproduction of the issue on apex.oracle.com that we can experiment with.
    Is this just to limit the size of an actual report or is the <tt>textarea</tt> editable within a tabular form ? If the former I'd just use a <tt>div</tt>...

  • Help Using SQL*Plus Format Commands (like TTITLE) in Packages

    Where (within a package) can/should SQL*Plus format commands such as TTITLE, COLUMN & BREAK be coded?

    A package is coded in PL/SQL.
    TTITLE, COLUMN and BREAK are SQL*Plus commands, they cannot be used in PL/SQL.
    If you want to output data (using dbms_output) in your package, you'll have to implement the features yourself. But probably just using SQL*Plus is better in your case.
