Combining iPhoto libraries from different computers?

Hi all!
I have a question I could use some help on --
I would like to import an iPhoto library from a friend's computer into my iPhoto library. Specifically, I want to add a iPhoto folder of hers containing a bunch of photos that are already labeled. Is that possible to do? I would normally just import the photos directly, except for the fact that she painstakingly already labeled/dated the photos in her iPhoto library and would hate to have to re-label everything.
Thanks for any suggestions.
A.P.

Hi alexandra,
I need to know more info about the folder of images.
Is it just a folder of images she exported from her library? When you double click the folder to open it, what are the names of the images?
Or is it instead a CD that mounts within iPhoto?

  • How to unify multiple iPhoto libraries from different Mac OS versions?

    I am pretty good with the Mac itself and have been a long time user. I knew full well acumulating multiple iphoto libraries in older backups (intead of building up on one) was not a great idea but for several reasons I have had to live that way. Now is the time to clean it all up once and for all and I need some wisdom;
-I got my external drive as my new iphoto library now. It's being used, there are already albums in it and it's ready to accept older libraries.
-What I want is that the older libraries (about 10 of them from different Mac OS versions) to show up in the new external drive as they looked in iphot back then. As albums in other words.
-I do not want them imported in a single folder that's full of photos.
    Any help is much appreciated,
    Cheers.
    M

If you imported a previous iphoto library into your new one, it created a folder inside the iphoto called "imported".
That was the problem. One should never import one library into another.  Only iPhoto 6 libraries and earlier can be imported into a library now.  With the introduction of iPhoto 7 the library was changed from a folder to a package which can't be imported by the current iPhoto version.
To use an older library with a new iPhoto version one just opens that library with iPhoto and lets iPhoto update it as necessary.  No importing necessary.
Also you can use the paid verson of  iPhoto Library Manager  to merge those additional libraries into your current working library (be sure to have a current backup of your current library before merging).  What will be included are albums, Events, keywords, titles, descriptions, places.  Books, slideshows, calendars in the other libraries will be copied over as just albums.

  • Sharing libraries from different computers

i have two computers. i originally had itunes only on one pc. when i downloaded the program onto my other computer the only option i had is to completely erase my ipod to update it with the new library on the second computer. can anyone tell me how to combine the songs from my ipod to this new library so i can have all of my songs on both computers?

well, there is a way to take songs off an ipod and on to a computer but its tedious. I've done this with my 2nd generation but not with my 5th so it might not work anymore. You have to open the ipod for my computer and show hidden files. This allows you to see every song file on the ipod but..... they aren't in any specific order. On my old ipod, i had over 50 different folders housing nearly 1600 randomly placed songs. If you can find the one you want, just copy it to your computer.

  • Can I combine bookmarks etc from different computers when syncing Firefox or will the main computer erase the other devices' bookmarks, etc?

I have different bookmarks on the different computers that I want to sync. I want to have all the bookmarks on all the devices. Is this possible when I sync? Thank you.

    Hi!
Yes, Firefox Sync merges and adds all the info in all the profiles. It doesn't delete the information on any of them. That way you will have the information from any of your devices in the rest of the devices.

  • Combining 4 iPods/libraries from different computers on 1 computer

I need help! My wife and I purchased 2 iPod minis some time ago, and I set hers up on her laptop. I set mine up on my work computer. Now our two children have an iPod mini and a nano. I want to move everything (all libraries/songs) to one central computer in our house, so we all can share the library. All music in our respective libraries is our own (off of CDs), and we haven't downloaded any songs. Again, I need to be able to have all 4 iPods hooked up to 1 library on 1 computer! Thanks for any help.

One way would be to use the actual iPods and remove the tracks from them to build one central iTunes. There are a number of third party utilities you can use to retrieve the files from your iPod. This is just a selection.
    YamiPod
    PodUtil
    PodPlayer
    iPodAgent
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive posted in this thread: iPod to iTunes
Keep your iPods in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return them to auto-sync if you wish.

  • Combining iTunes downloads from different computers?

I have an iTunes account on 3 different laptops. Is there a way to combine all songs on one computer and then merge everything on my iPod?
    Thx.csd

Are you wanting to combine all the iTunes purchases you made on all 3 laptops, or does this content include nonpurchased items such as CD's you imported yourself?
Use your iPod to move the music from each laptop onto a single one.  See this article for more details on how to make this happen.
How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
Once you have done that, restore your iPod to factory settings on the laptop containing all your consolidated iTunes content and set it up to sync everything back over to it.

  • Sharing iphoto libraries on different computers

Hi, I'm trying to move all my files from one mac to another. I have a ton of photos in my iPhoto on Old Computer, but only some of them show up on New Computer. I took my last import, and made a photo stream out of it, but I can't give it a name, and what shows up on New Computer is only a portion of what's in the Photostream on Old Computer. What am I doing wrong? Is there any way to make an album, and have that album show up in my New Computer's iPhoto Library???

I you want all of your photos and photo information on the new mac PhotoStream is NOT the way to move them - Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc)  or use an external hard drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

I have two separate iTunes libraries on different computers and I would like to compact into one. But I cannot without completely erasing one of the libraries. How can I do this without deleting anything?

Copy the content from one computer to another and import the media into iTunes.
Any playlists, playcounts, etc on the computer the content is being moved from will be lost.

I have an iMac 2013 running OSX 10.9.4. I want to use Carbon Copy Cloner to backup user files to an external hard drive to free up space on my iMack Hard drive.
So, say I make the backup today, delete iphoto libraries from my iMac, and then backup my iMac in a week. What happens to the iphoto libraries that are on the external backup drive now that I am backing up the iMac where they no longer exist?
I will have them backed up to a separate second external drive as well.
I'm just very cautious about removing them from the hard drive.
Thanks for helping and understanding my crazy caution!

I'd like to store my Aperture /IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive.
That is fine and recommended.. use the fastest disk you can afford.. ie Thunderbolt>USB3>FW800>USB2.
In addition, I'd like to partition the external hard drive so that Time Machine can use it to both back up my IMac and the external library drives.
Let me be clear.. you want to partition the one disk.. use it for TM and move your files to the external disk.. and then backup to the same disk.. You can do it.. but that is not a backup.. that is an experiment in how long you can get away with running files and backups on the same disk before you lose everything.. like Russian Roulette.. pull the trigger enough times and laws of probability will do you in.
You must have backups on a different disk .. otherwise it is pointless.
Can I set up a RAID 5 format for redundancy?
No.. you can buy special USB and Thunderbolt external drives that support RAID..
BUT that is still not a backup.. let me show why.. you make a silly move and corrupt your file in aperture.. it is not that rare.
Raid will corrupt all copies of the files.. it is replicated across all disks.
Delete a photo it is deleted across all disks.. you have no recovery.
Alway, always consider RAID system one disk.. backup onto another disk.. and if the photos or movies are at all important to you.. ie your family .. make another copy and store in a relatives house.. There is no such thing as too much redundancy.

  • I moved my iPhoto libraries from one hard drive to another and have to manually locate the photos, every time!!!

I moved my iPhoto libraries from one hard drive to another and now every time I open a library I have to manually locate the photos. After locating the first file, it works well and remembers the location of the files of all the events, even when the folders containing the actual photos are in several different locations.
The problem is that when I close and open iPhoto, it does not remember where the files were and I have to locate at least a file, all over again.
Does anyone knows if there is a way of making iPhoto "remember" or saving the location of the files?

By default, iPhoto will store its library file under ~/Pictures. To select a library manually in iPhoto:
    Ensure that iPhoto is closed.
Hold down the Option key and click on the iPhoto icon in your Dock or launch it from the Applications folder.
    Click on Choose Library.
Locate and select the library you wish to use.
Close iPhoto and re-open it. Does it remember the library that you selected?
For more information on moving your iPhoto library, see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1229.
Hope that helps, have a great day.

  • Merging iPhoto Libraries from two Macs

Does anyone have a way of physically combining (not just sharing) iPhoto libraries from two macs? I'm hoping there's an easier, smarter way of doing it than just exporting all of the photos from one and importing them into the other and then just doing the reverse. Is there software that does this smarter? Can get rid of duplicates, etc.?

    Merge?
    Do you mean 'sync' libraries
The general term means when two Libraries (A and B) are compared and files in Library A are copied to Library B, while files in Library B are also copied to Library A so that both Libraries are identical.
This is bi-directional copying and you cannot do this with automatically with iPhoto. No Syncing software is capable of parsing the iPhoto Library in this manner. One or both of your Libraries will be damaged if you try this.
The nearest you can get to syncing is to use iPhoto Library Manager to move files/Albums/Events plus assoicated metadata between Libraries. This process cannot be automated.
The Export/Import route will not get your versions.

  • Edit iPhoto library from 2 computers ...

    Hi,
I want to edit my iPhoto library from my 2 computers:  my iMac and my MacBook Air.  I have a Time Capsule that I use for backup purpose with Carbon Copy Cloner but not as Time Machine destination.
I found this link that explains how to be able to edit my iPhoto library from 2 computers.  I wonder if I can use my Time Capsule to put my iPhoto library ?  I am not able to change the option to «Ignore Permissions on this volume» ... of my Time Capsule.
Can I use my Time Capsule to share my iPhoto library ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Robert Lespérance

Is there any NAS drive that I can use with the «Ignore Permissions on this volume» selected for this purpose ?
    No.
The NAS software will prevent this, and the file system will be wrong.
You need the File System Mac OS Extended (Journaled) to prevent ambiguous filenames and pathnames.
And iPhoto is not supported on network volumes. See http://support.apple.com/en-us/TS5168
iPhoto libraries should be stored on a locally mounted Mac OS X Extended drive for best performance.
You are risking data loss and poor performance on a network volume. iPhoto has not been designed as a network database.

  • Any way to restore iTunes and iPhoto libraries from failed Time Machine backup?

Is there a way to restore iTunes and iPhoto libraries from an unmountable Time Machine backup?
Background: I received an update alert on my iMac (mid-2010, 1TB) from Time Machine (wirelessly connected to a Time Capsule, 2TB 2013)  that it required an update and required rebooting, of course, it happened when I was in the middle of a project and I postponed the restart for later.  That evening I turned off the computer and coincidentally the next morning, the iMac would not start; it loaded to the Apple logo and about an 1/8 of the progress bar would load before the iMac would turn off.
The iMac had been fine to that day (OS upgrades and all since 2010) so I was assuming something misfired when I declined the Time Machine update. I tried the PRAM and SMC resets mentioned in the forums but no dice. I then went into Disk Utility to try repairs and there were errors on the hard drive that could not be fixed. My next step was to erase the drive and restore from my Time Machine backup. Before doing that I checked Disk Utility and to my horror,  it told me that my Time Machine backups were unmountable so of course my first thought was that all my files were gone.
The TC was under warranty so I called support and they referred me to the local Genius Bar. The Genius was great and showed me that my files weren't lost even though the Time Machine backup was unmountable. They recommended I erase the partitions, starting from scratch and I would have to transfer the Time Machine backup files manually by directly connecting an ethernet cable from the TC to the computer. If that didn't work, the hard drive was bad and needed replacement which they could take care of.
I followed their recommendation and the hard drive is fine. I was so relieved to hear that my files were safe that I forgot to ask about all of the metadata that was lost in iTunes (de-selected songs, playlists, rankings, play counts) and iPhoto (geotags, names, etc). Any ideas / help? I sank considerable time into my music and photos and would love to have that time back.
FWIW, I'm in the process of buying an external hard drive as a secondary backup to the TC as my confidence is a little shaken on the product line - the first time I ever actually need a backup and the backup is unmountable. My whole point of spending a little more and buying into the Apple ecosystem for a backup solution was to streamline the backup process and avoid these types of issues.

Thank you for the reply. I tried the Disk Utility to repair my TC's Time Machine backup disk with no luck, it stopped with the message:
    Disk utility stopped repairing "iMac"
Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
It took a night but I was able to copy all the TC Time Machine files to the external hard drive as a backup to a backup just in case. I'm still pretty bummed the TC's backup didn't allow for Disk Utility's restore functionality. Fortunately, the iPhoto library backup I dragged to the iMac from the Time Capsule backup worked without a hitch. On the downside, the "iTunes Library.itl" backup I dragged over is locked so now I'm checking out the forums for any ways to fix that. I temporarily created a new iTunes library with all my apps and music but plan on reverting to the old iTunes library if possible so I can start syncing my iOS devices again.

  • Burned iPhoto libraries from 2002 show up as 0 photos when re-opened

I have iPhoto libraries from 2002 (and possibly other years) burned to CD's that when re-opened in iPhoto show up in the album list but show as 0 photos. Newer burned to disc libraries are available but the old ones are not. The burned photos are available on the disc by exiting iPhoto and going through all the folder prompts, so the jpeg images are there. The disc also has the data and thumbnail folders. Is there some kind of update that is needed?

If TD's suggestion is unsuccessful open the library folder and drag the Originals folder to the Desktop.
Then drag the subfolders in the Originals folder, a few at a time<  into your open iPhoto window.  That will import the original files into Events with the same names as the subfolders have.
