Comcast, Vonage, Airport

I'm trying to figure out why using the telephone on Vonage is dropping my wireless connection forcing me to relogin my wireless connection.
Currently I have an RCA modem plugged in my WAN port of my Apple Airport Extreme 802.11n base station.
I have the Vonage box hooked up via one LAN port.
I have a Windows XP SP 2 Dell in a second LAN port.
and I have a MacBook Pro 10.4.11 Core2Duo 2.2 Ghz hooked up via wireless.
I'm hoping the upgrade to version 7.3.1 of the airport software will fix the problem, but if it doesn't, does it really matter if the Vonage box is hooked up between the RCA modem and the WAN port, or if it is on a LAN port of the airport base station?

Aha! Interference robustness in the airport menu when unchecked solved the problem. I saw that every time I took the phone off the hook the network completely dropped, only to come back up when the phone was put back on the hook. Turned off interference robustness, and that cleared everything up.

  • Comcast (Denver) - Airport says there's no connection

I have a Time Capsule (fresh out of box) an Airport Express and an old Airport Base station. The express and base station have worked great for many years in my previous home network. I moved to Denver yesterday and now cannot get anything working. When I plug the comcast cable modem ethernet cable into my laptop(s), I get online right away. When I plug this same ethernet cable into any of my apple devices (all three), it says there is no connectivity. I have power cycled several times today. I've been on chat and phone support with Comcast that says it should all be automatic detection and that I need to contact Apple support because they don't support routers. If my laptop can get online, then Comcast will not advise on any other scenario. I have never had this problem with my Apple wireless devices. Do I just need to go to Frye's and buy a Linksys? Why is my apple gear not detecting an internet connection? I can't take this amber light anymore. I work from home and am dead in the water. Help!

About 1.5 years ago, I had problems with Comcast, airport modems and Time Machine. Airport modems and TM would work fine on DSL, but would not work satisfactorily on Comcast. While on Comcast, TM/Airport would report "can't find server" and would not allow access to common websites that I use frequently (USDA, EPA, doodle.com, skype.com, etc.). I fired Comcast and went with Qwest. Two weeks ago, I moved in with my girlfriend and she has Comcast. After 1.5 years of happy and reliable DSL access, I am not pleased to be once again having the same trouble as before. And, all of the suggestions to plug in, unplug, replug, and all that completely violate the plug and play utility of Apple products. Frankly, it's too much wasted time to have to do that every time I disconnect the laptop to leave and return to the home office.
I get better access to the net through a stick drive modem than through Comcast with Time Machine. It is clear that there is some sort of incompatibility between Time Machine, Airport modems and Comcast. In an effort to try and keep the girlfriend's comcast account instead of outright killing it, I've ordered a high speed upgrade (22-30 mbps) that includes a different cable modem for install on 23 Dec. But, I am not convinced that this will resolve the issues, especially if it is an incompatibility at the Comcast server level. After install, I'll try to access the sites that a Comcast modem-TM-airport config never lets me access, and if access is granted, yay, problem solved. But if access is not granted, then the technician will be leaving with the high speed modem and the old modem and I'll go back to DSL.
From a review of this thread and others like it, it this problem appears to be costing customers, Comcast and Apple lots of time, money and goodwill. I trust Apple, but think that Comcast is PC-centric and frankly does not care to invest in identification of the problem. If Apple won't make the warning, I would: If you own and wish to operate an Apple computer using Airport or Time Machine, certain unresolved issues with interface with Comcast cable modems may warrant consideration of alternative internet service providers.
    Kind regards,
    Doug

  • DNS Server Issues with Comcast and Airport Extreme wifi routers

I am having significant challenges with 3 Airport Extreme (latest gen) wifi routers and my Comcast Xfinitity service.  It once worked just fine, but now I continually get the blinking amber lights stating "No DNS servers" for each of the Airport Extreme (AE) routers.  My configuration is:
Coax cable -> Comcast Xfinity cable modem -> ethernet to 16-port gigabit ethernet switch ->->-> ethernet to 3 Airport Extremes around the house direct connected with switch
I have many wifi devices throughout the house (iPads, MacBooks, home automation devices) as well as direct-connected devices via ethernet (one PC connected to AE router).
Each Airport Extreme router is set with these settings in the Airport Utility app:
    Internet tab=  Connect using: DHCP
Wireless tab=  Network mode: Create a wireless network
Network tab=   Router mode: Off (Bridge Mode)
I have attempted to put the Xfinity cable modem in bridge mode, and use the Airport Extreme to serve up the IP addresses, but still lost internet connectivity.
I have also attempted to set the Network tab=> Router Mode to "DHCP and NAT" but get "Double NAT" error issues as well.
I have tried using the Comcast DNS server addresses (75.75.75.75;75.75.76.76) setting on the Internet tab for the routers and do end up getting a green light, but NO internet connectivity.
Lastly, I have tried using the Google DNS servers (8.8.8.8;8.8.4.4) setting on the Internet tab the routers giving me the No DNS servers amber light error and again, no Internet connectivity for either wifi-connected or even ethernet connected (directly to Airport Extreme router) devices (like my PC) despite getting a green light on the router.
Any this point, it really seems that these AE routers are NOT compatible with the Xfinity cable modem or service… (and yes, I've tried power-cycling and restarting the modem, and then the AE routers, MANY times to little avail).
Should I move one of these Airport Extreme wifi routers to before the switch, and have the other 2 in Bridge mode after the switch?  Do I need to setup a specific range of DHCP reservation addresses for each different AE router?
Appreciate any insight anyone can share with this aggravating DNS server issue between Comcast & multiple Airport Extreme wifi routers.

I do not see anything wrong with your basic setup.. the issue is indeed the WAN ports of the AE.. AC version are having problems with some network equipment.
You have listed a stack of things you have tried.. but I want you to move the ethernet patch cable you use on each AE to its LAN port instead of WAN.
Restart the airport when you do that.. and then see if it becomes stable.
In bridge mode the airport moves the WAN port to LAN.. but the WAN port setup itself seems more problematic than the LAN ports.
There are other methods we can try if this does not work.. but in the end.. I would be tempted to take the whole lot back to apple.. they need to start making equipment that works with standard modems and switches.
BTW what brand is the 16 port switch?? Does it happen to be managed (smart type)?

  • Vonage, AirPort Extreme Base Station, and Comcast

I just picked up an Airport Extreme Base Station, and wanted to use it to get my MacBook Pro on my home network. However, I can't get it to actually provide an network connection to the MacBook. In the Network pane of System Preferences, under the Network Status, AirPort has a yellow icon, and the following message: "AirPort is connected to the network HulkNet. AirPort has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the Internet."
    Here's my current setup:
Comcast > Cable Modem > LinkSys RTP300 > PowerMac, PC, AEBS
I have the "Distribute IP addresses" disabled on the AirPort, and the internet for the PowerMac & the PC work fine. In the network status of the RTP300, the AEBS is listed as having an IP address of it's own.
Any gurus out there that can help me figure this out? I just want to be able to access my home network from anywhere in the house!

    All,
I recently posted what I believe to be a similar/identical issue. See my post here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1378849
I have not changed my AEBS to "Off (Bridge Mode)" yet, because everything currently 'works' but I continue to get the occasional "Double NAT" warning suggesting I switch the AEBS to bridge mode. When this happens, I lose connection to the internet and need to unplugged both the AEBS and my modem to re-establish a connection to the internet and the external HD I have connected to the AEBS.
My question for Jmiller1138, do you continue to get the "Double NAT" warning even when you changed your AEBS to "Off (Bridge Mode)"? I am hesitant to change my AEBS to bridge mode since I'm assuming I'll need to totally reconfigure my entire network (meaning both the AirPort Extremes, my wireless HP printer, and my firewalls on my PCs).
The ignoring of the warning (i.e. closing the AirPort Utility without updating the AEBS) is what triggers the need to reset my AEBS and modem. Not fun.
I guess I'll just need to bite the bullet and set the AEBS to bridge mode . . . yes?

  • Cannot even detect AE signal? Comcast Vonage AE config

Just received my Airport Express. Thus far, no luck installing it. My basic configuration is: Linksys cable modem (Comcast); connected to it is a Vonage Phone adaptor router (Linksys); attached to that is the AE base station.
Have tried the normal trouble shooting: shut down everything and restart from cable modem after several minutes; unplugged cordless phone, rebooted MacBook. Bypassed Vonage router and plugged in directly to cable modem router. No luck thus far. Comcast will not provide any support; Vonage said it would work if connecting the AE after their phone adaptor router.
Any ideas? I was hoping to plug in and have it show up. LIghts are blinking on the base station when plugged in. Middle light on now but not side lights.
Do I need to further configure on of my routers?
Oh, I did pick this up on eBay. So there's a chance it got damaged shipping or is not working. Perhaps I'll try it out on our office network.
    Thanks in advance.

PS I can pick up a signal now with iStumbler. But using Apple's own software, I am unable to set up the proper configuration.
The setup assistant cannot detect the new base station; using configure existing base station, I can't get the password/security working properly. Tried fiddling under System Preferences>Network, but that failed me, too.
I'm running the ethernet cable through the base station now. So it seems properly connected to the phone adaptor-router and cable modem.

  • Comcast Cable, Airport Express, Mac, + Windows XP - How to make work?

    History:
I have a Mac iBook + (2)Dell Laptops running Windows XP.
Recently, I switched from Verizon DSL to Comcast. New Modem, same router - Airport Express.
Problem - Cable modem to Airport Express to Mac WORK! But, Neither Dell will see a wireless signal. Now, Dell's won't recogize any wireless signals at all. (took to apple store plus Hotspot - nothing) Seems too conincidental that BOTH wifi card would give out at the exact same time I switched to cable.
Previous to the switch to comcast, all worked fine. I know I shut off the broadcast of the SSID prior to the switch, but, thought the Airport was set back to factory default. Current setting of Airport has WEP involked.
    Question:
Does anyone know how to get all three Laptops running wirelessly?

Problem - Cable modem to Airport Express to Mac WORK!
But, Neither Dell will see a wireless signal. Now,
Dell's won't recogize any wireless signals at all.
(took to apple store plus Hotspot - nothing)
Most Windows laptops with built-in wireless have a switch which allows them to turn the wireless on and off in order to save battery power.
Ensure that the switch is in the on position.
Previous to the switch to comcast, all worked fine. I
know I shut off the broadcast of the SSID prior to
    the switch,
Ensure that it is switched on.
It use to be useful, but closing your Airport or wireless network (sometimes referred to as not broadcasting your SSID) is really no longer a real option when it comes to wireless security.
Unfortunately "Closed" networks, MAC access control lists, and reduction in transmission power are all more "feel good" security rather than real security. All these various approaches are dated and mistakenly lead to overconfidence.
My recommendation is not to worry about broadcasting your SSID but use WPA. This will be more secure than a closed WEP encrypted network. Closing your network makes it very difficult for neighbouring networks to see which channels are free thus causing potential interference problems.
Another thing to consider is that a closed network is still broadcasting and therefore is detectable (regardless of whether it is broadcasting a SSID). If someone was determined to hack into your network, then not broadcasting your SSID and MAC address access control is not going to stop them.
WPA is virtually uncrackable (only really vunerable to a dictionary attack if a real word is used as a password) and therefore will stop the casual user and the determined hacker.
but, thought the Airport was set back to
factory default. Current setting of Airport has WEP
    involked.

  • Comcast with Airport Problem

I have just switched to Comcast internet. Right now their modem is hardwired to my MacPro and works well. I would like to run their modem to my Airport Extreme (n) as I had my satellite internet before, so my other computers can be connected wirelessly.
So far I cannot get a connection when I try this.
What do I need to do with in the Airport Utility? The cable guy has never hooked up a Mac before. When he looked at the IP, and other settings, he said it all looked fine.
    Thoughts please?
    Connie

Apple will likely advise you to perform a hard reset the AirPort Extreme (AEBS) and reconfigure it.
If you want to try this, hold in the reset button on the AEBS until the amber light blinks quickly and keep holding a few more seconds, then release.
When you reconfigure the device, you can enter the same network name, password, etc that you used before.
To help AirPort Utility "see" the AEBS, temporarily connect an ethernet cable from your computer to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AEBS.
Open AirPort Utility and click Continue to follow the guided setup. Choose the "create a wireless network" option when you see that appear.
Some modems take longer than others to completely reset. Push the reset button on the modem and then power it down for at least 30 minutes before you power it back up.

  • Comcast connection  Airport

I just remodeled my room and unplug my comcast cable modem and other TV, DVD, etc.
I rewire everything and power up, and find that the AirPort is not connection to internet.
Reset modem and Airport is not working (I unpluged about 15 minutes for both Airport and cable mode) but no luck.
If I connected directly connected with Ethernet cable to cable mode, it's fine to use internet.
Please help me if you have any idea to check.
Airport Utility connected wimy MakBookPro but it just displaying as "Not connected with internet"...

This solved my problem! I unplugged my modem overnight, leaving the Airport Extreme turned on. In the morning, I plugged the modem back in. At first it seemed that it wasn't working - but after a few attempts from a few different computers, the Airport Extreme kicked in, serving up DNS okay and I was able to get through. It's been running for a few hours now and I have a good feeling for the future.
Now my Xbox 360 is working, hard wired into the Airport Extreme, and the Airport Extreme is talking to my modem okay, a Scientific-Atlanta DCP2100, and I've got a few Macs and a PC working wirelessly on it.
I followed the advice in this thread and it worked! Thanks a bunch.

  • Comcast and Airport on Computer Saying Not Configured

    Hey everyone,
I just set up my high speed internet from Comcast, the installation disk said I had a connection error, but everything appeared to be working and connected correctly. I called tech support and we messed around with some stuff, so now I have wireless Internet, but my Airport in the menu bar of my computer shows that it is off, and when I want to "turn it on" it the only options are "not configured" and "open network preferences." Do I need to reinstall the drivers for Airport or something?

Your MacBook Pro is not recognizing the built-in wireless card. This problem has nothing to do with the wireless router.
You may want to post in the appropriate MacBook Pro discussion area.

  • Comcast HSI, AirPort Extreme Base Station issues

Recently, I've been having some connection issues with my Comcast High-Speed Internet and my AirPort Extreme Base Station. I'll be connected fine one minute, and the next my AirPort monitor drops to 2 bars of signal and nothing will connect. Resetting the base station and the modem works about 50% of the time, while just sitting here "dealing with it" works the other half of the time.
I rent my cable modem from Comcast, and I believe it is the Terayon TJ715. I went to the Apple Store San Francisco and had my base station replaced, thinking it was the culprit, but alas, the problem is continuing, only less frequently.
I've replaced all my ethernet cables, tried it with my AirPort Express (which works more often, yet has the same problem occasionally), yet my connection uptime and signal still drops to 2 bars and essentially disconnects.
Even stranger, the computer I have connected to the LAN port seems to work fine even when the computers connecting wirelessly are having issues.
I'm going down to a Comcast Support Center on Friday to (hopefully) replace my modem with a newer model (someone told me that older Comcast modems "kill" AirPort Base Stations), but other than that, any ideas? Anyone have this type of issue with Comcast in the past?
The 3 machines im running are:
    Dual-Core 2.3Ghz Power Mac G5 via AirPort
867MHz PowerBook G4 (Titanium) via AirPort
    800MHz iMac G4 (Flat-Panel) via Ethernet
    Thanks,
    Alexis
    Dual-Core 2.3GHz Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Don,
Thank you for the link. However, it did not seem to solve my issue.
It's not that I haven't been able to connect to the internet at all using wireless. I will be connected fine (all 3 computers connecting to the internet simultaniously) when suddenly, any machine connected via AirPort (specifically my Dual-Core Power Mac G5) will receive two bars of signal and will no longer connect to the internet. The only remedy I've found is to reset both the cable modem and AirPort Extreme Base Station, and this only works about 50% of the time.
I am going to have Comcast replace the modem (and in the meantime, get new Ethernet cables) tomorrow, so hopefully I won't be having this issue anymore, but I'm more curious what may be causing the issue. Have you heard anything about older Comcast modems causing latency issues with AirPort Extreme Base Stations?
    Thanks again,
    Alexis

  • Vonage & Airport Extreme & keeping time on the phone

I can not get my phone to keep the correct CST time while using Vonage with the Airport Extreme. I think it has something to do with the Airport Extreme setting as Vonage has the correct setting. Has anyone had this problem? Have you figured out how to fix it?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   airport extreme / vonage / keeping time on the phone

Thank you for your prompt response. I have actually figured it out. I will post my solution here in case others that are reading this have a similar issue. Here are the steps I took:
    Open airport utility. (Applications-utilities-airport utility).
Selected the Airport Extreme on left column, then clicked on the manual set up button on the left button. This beings up a few options on the top of the box. Airport should be selected. In the inner box there are fiver buttons, selecting wireless brings up a list of options, radio channel has two options from the drop down menu, select manual. This brings up an edit button. Going into this option submenu provides the opportunity to have a 5GHz freq network on a specific channel.
I have been running a few tests on my network to check performance. I have a movie running on my AppleTV. On My MBA I tried a bunch of stuff to tax the network. I let the MBA sync with mobile Me. In the meantime I played a quicktime movie trailer in HD (in loop mode), downloaded an HD trailer (over 100mb), and surfed the net. So far, the MBA has been cruising at a cool 140 degrees, no stalling.
Note: Before running the tests, I made sure I selected the network I created with the 5GHz freq in title in parenthesis.

  • Connecting to Comcast using airport express

My wife bumped the Airport express router that connects to our comcast modem.  I unplugged both, reset the comcast modem, waited 3-4 minutes, then plugged the airport express router back in the socket.  Went downstairs, couldnt connect to the internet according to the airport express utility application.  Green light on airport express, orange light on the "Internet" in the utility.  Called Comcast, total waste of time after 1.5 hrs of "tech support"  was told to call Apple .  Computer is 4 years old, has been working fine up to this  point.  Apple wants me to pay $49 for support.  nothing guaranteed.
Any suggestions?  I've tried turning off IMAC, running upstairs, unplug airport express, unplug modem, push reset on modem, wait 4 minutes for modem to fire back up, plug airport express back in, run downstairs, turn on IMAC, run airport express utility and same result, green for airport express router, orange for internet.
Opened up Safari, tried network diagnostics troubleshooting, it eventually asks me if we are DHC? or PPPoE.  I choose PPPoE and enter comcast for service provider, enter username and password (as verified by Comcast) during my 1.5 hour session.  trys to connect.  goes back to same screen of do we have DHCP or PPPoE.
    Frustrating!
Neighbor told me to plug IMAC directly into Modem and see what happens using an Ethernet hard connection.  Will try tonight.
    Any assistance is appreciated.

    Bob,
I plugged the Ethernet directly into my Imac, clicked on DHCP, and I was connected.  Plugged my airport express back in, unplugged cord from computer back to airport express, waited for green light on airport, tried to connect to my network, unable to get to the Internet.  Wifi was on, just not able to connect to the internet.
So, I unplugged again, plugged ethernet cord into computer, back on the internet.
Puzzled.  Airport seems to be working fine, amber light when first plugged in, green light after a few minutes.
Tried plugging in airport to comcast modem, reset modem, waited 5 minutes, tried to connect to internet, not able to do so.
Airport utility says airport express is fine.
needless to say, Im at a high level of frustration.  Never ever had a problem this bad.
wondered if I unplugged airport express for 24 hours, then tried again, hoping it would clear out any memory on board and start the whole process of creating a new network over again.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks by the way.
    George

  • Recommendations for Comcast-approved modem to be used with AirPort Extreme?

Any recommendations for modems that work well with Comcast and AirPort Extreme? If there are ones that work well or ones to avoid, I'd like to know.
Here's Comcast's list of approved modems:
    http://mydeviceinfo.comcast.net/

The motorola sb6120 is what I used with great success. It's a docsis 3.0 modem so it's capable of the latest high speeds that comcast can offer. Good luck!

  • Airport extreme stop working suddenly

I have an airport extreme that is used to be connected to Vonage for the internet phone. It goes from cable modem>Vonage>airport extreme. It used to works quite well when I have the airport extreme sets to bridge mode. The problem started when I cancelled my Vonage and reconnect the airport extreme to my cable modem. At present time I cannot get any internet connection through AE. If I connect the cable modem to my computer, the internet will works fine. I'm getting some error message from AE about no internet connection, unable to obtain IP, unable to connect to DNS server.
When I put in my old router, and connect the AE to the old router and set it up in a bridge mode, I'm able to get internet connection via the AE ethernet port. I have tried to reset the AE but I'm still end up with the same problem. Does anybody encounter with similar issue in past? Any suggestion in regard how to fix this thing? I'm hoping that I don't have to spend close to $200 to replace my AE.

OK, one more wild stab and then I'm probably out of ideas (hopefully someone else has some new ones).
Way back in the stone ages (remember @Home?), you had to use an assigned host name. Is there any chance your PC and Netgear are configured with an ISP-assigned host name and your Extreme isn't? I think the host name would go in the Internet, TCP/IP, DHCP Client ID field in the AirPort Utility but I'm not sure.
To generalize this, look through all your Netgear configuration settings to see if you can find anything (like a host name, DHCP client ID, etc.) in it that you might need to transfer over to your Extreme configuration.
Beyond this I just don't know. Anyone else out there got any suggestions?

  • Can't connect to Airport Express - "Connection timeout" error msg

Two weeks ago my wireless internet connection failed abruptly.  Since then I have spent time troubleshooting this problem at the Genius Bar of local Apple Store where the problem cannot be replicated with the same equipment (my Airport Express and MacBk Pro).  I have since traded out my old Airport Express for a new one and had the same problem after bringing it home and attempting a setup of the new device.  I went back to Genius Bar and setup new Airport Express only to bring it back home and have the same issue.  Both the modem and the Airport Express have been reset in previous attempts to connect wirelessly.  Equipment is as follows:
    2011 MacBook Pro, OS X10.6.8
    2011 Airport Express
Cable Modem: Motorola SURFboard, model SB5120
    ISP: Comcast
The Airport Express is hardwired to Motorola modem and there is no other network running in my apartment.
    Any suggestions?

Did you ever get this problem fixed? I have a very similar issue going on...
