  • When I start Internet Sharing /etc/bootpd.plist is not created and the other device is not assigned an IP address.

Just like the tite says. I am investigating why my Macbook Pro (3,1) running Mountain Lion will not assign an IP address to a computer connected via Ethernet when Internet Sharing is turned on (laptop receiving WiFi connection, supposed to be sharing connection over ethernet). I tested using a relatives macbook and it worked just fine. It turns out my laptop is not creating the file: /etc/bootpd.plist when Internet Sharing is turned on.
I have a console log here from when I start internet sharing:

    Any help is appreciated!

    Solved it, at least temporarily:
Investigate process binding port 67 with the following command:
    sudo lsof -i 67
Close the offending process (in this case: bootps):
    sudo /bin/launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/bootps.plist
Start internet sharing again from the system preferences panel

  • Application that sets up and starts internet sharing

I'm new to OS X programming and was hoping to get some ideas in solving a problem i'm having.
Need to create an application that will set up internet sharing with specific configurations (Firewire and airport only) and then start it.
I have been playing around with applescript to automate the gui controls of System Preferences and it works pretty good. However its very annoying that the gui needs to be displayed to do this.
MS provides an API called INetSharingConfiguration that enables network connection bridging in visual studio. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa365935(VS.85).aspx I would be surprised if apple did not provide something of the same, however I have not been able to find it.
Does anyone have knowledge of a framework or API that could be used in xcode to get the same thing done? Suggestions would also be helpful.
Also, If I have to stay with applescripting the gui controls, is there a way to hide the gui when this is activated?

still looking for a good solution but I did come across a plist file that seems to hold these settings. /Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.nat.plist
Has anyone successfully modified this file and started internet sharing by using it?

  • Internet Sharing between Mac Mini and Windows 7

    Hi all,
I installed Lion yesterday on my parent's Mac Mini. We use the Mini's Internet Sharing to connect the other computers in our house to the internet since we're only home a few months of the year.
After setting up Internet Sharing I jumped over to my HP G62 and connected to the new network. It found it but I can only load a few websites off of the connection: Google, Youtube, Netflix(sometimes) and my school's email. Everything else just endlessly loads - I can't follow links through Google searches, can't input the URLs directly, nothing seems to work except those few sites.
The websites work fine while I'm on Mini, and all of the settings appear to be the same as when we were running Snow Leopard - minus the change to WiFi instead of Airport. I also seem to be getting a slower connection on my HP, it's registering between 52Mbps and 65Mbps - it used to register at 100Mbps.
    Any ideas?

Same here, but I am sharing from a WIFI connection to an Ethernet device.

  • How to control internet sharing via MAC access control list?

    Hello,
I know how to share the internet over the Wi-Fi. I know that there could be a password. But I need to control users by MAC addresses, just like in the routers. So, I want to give an access ONLY to a several MAC addresses which I'll write in some ?list?. But the main point is that the other computers, which are not included in that list, can't access my network.
I figured out that it is nearly impossible to do via standard utilities in mac os, so is there any 3rd party software for such things?
Thank you very much for your help!

  • Unix command for turning file sharing off

Is there a Unix command I can use to turn off file sharing on Leopard ( as well as Tiger ) laptops? I don't mean a command to kill it for the session, I need it off even if the system is restarted. Yes, I can do it though the Preferences, but I need to do it to over 200 some laptops. We have ARD and if we had a Unix command to send to turn file sharing off that would be helpful. Thank you.

There is a CLI for just about everything. From the [OS X Leopard Security Configuration Guide|http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/LeopardSecurity_Config20080530.pdf]:
    To disable FTP.
    launctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ftp.plist
    To disable SMB.
    defaults delete /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.smb.server EnabledServices
    launctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/nmbd.plist
    launctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/smbd.plist
    To disable AFP.
    launctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.AppleFileServer.plist

  • Internet sharing between Mac and Windows XP

I am trying to establish an airport wireless network with a Powermac G5 desktop and a Dell laptop with Windows XP, but have been unable to establish even an open network, let alone a secure WEP network. The laptop recognizes the network and ostensibly establishes a connection, but the browser (I've tried both Firefox and Explorer) is unable to connect to any webpages. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    David

OK, let's find the IP of the Airport on the Mac and the IP on the PC's connection.
    Find IP on computers...

Hopefully Macs Airport will be like x.x.2.1, and the PC x.x.2.x+1
We aren't do File Sharing or Windows Sharing at the same time are we?
You didn't create a Computer to Computer Airport Network on the Mac and are connecting to that are you?

  • Need a new AppleID for starting Home Sharing/appleStore??

    Hi,
I still don´t have my Ipad2, but I am looking already around in Itunes and stuff like that. I wanted to activate the Home SHaring option and it asks mean AppleID.
I introduced mine I use here at the Discussions, but it doen´t work, it keeps telling me that the password is incorrect.
Am I doing it wrong? Or do I need another account?
    Thx

Just create an Apple ID for iTunes. In iTunes, near the upper left you should see menu items File-Edit-View-Controls-Store-Advanced-Help, or their equivalents in the local language. Click "Store," and then "Create An Account."

  • High CPU usage for AppleVNCServer (Screen Sharing) on Mac Mini (mid 2010)

Steadily around 90-100% (on a dual-core), no browser opened, just iTunes, VLC and a couple of low-impact servers.
I wasn't worried about this since my Mini (no monitor, all Screen Sharing) has always done that but I just realized that Screen Sharing into my iMac or my MBP 13in (mid 2010, same CPU as Mini) does not make them go nearly as high (5-15%).
As a result, it runs pretty hot when I VNC into it.
    Any suggestion?

The screensharing CPU issue is still there in Mac OS 10.8.2 :-(
(i have the problem on my mid-2011 mac-mini server)
top sorted by CPU shows clearly two "screensharing"/"Screensharing" processes eating each about 45% CPU

  • Configuring Internet Sharing for other devices

I have set up Internet Sharing on a MacBook Pro. I am sharing the laptop Wifi connection over ethernet. If I connect a Mac to the laptop with ethernet, the sharing works fine--the Mac gets a DHCP address and is on the internet. However, what I am wanting to do is give an ethernet peripheral device an internet connection in this manner, and I can't get it to work. The periperal device will connect correctly if I give it an ethernet connection directly on my LAN, but for some reason the ethernet connection provided by the laptop doesn't work.
On the laptop, (WiFi IP 192.168.1.166, Router 192.168.1.1, DNS 192.168.1.1) I have given the ethernet port a static IP of 192.168.2.1 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. I have tried with the Router and DNS populated and unpopulated.
From a packet dump in terminal it looks like the device makes a DHCP request, but nothing sends a DHCP reply, wheras when the Mac connects, the laptop sends a DHCP reply.
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong, how to fix this, or how to check the log for Internet Sharing to see if I can see anything helpful there.
    Thanks
    Doug

I may have found a solution, but does anyone know if this 10.5 bug has been fixed by Apple? This was posted on an XBox forum as a workaround to the same proble--internet sharing not working with other devices:
    10.5:
The following procedure is confirmed to work as written.
Start Internet Sharing if it's not already running.
In Terminal, type cp /etc/bootpd.plist /tmp/bootpd.plist
    Stop Internet Sharing.
Open /tmp/bootpd.plist for editing using TextEdit or whatever.
Locate this section of the file, near the end:<key>reply_threshold_seconds</key><integer>4</integer>
Change the value 4 to 0.
In Terminal, type sudo cp /tmp/bootpd.plist /etc
    Start Internet Sharing.
If you want to, check that your change to /etc/bootpd.plist hasn't been reverted.
    So my question now:
Will this fix the issue in 10.6 or is there something else going on?

  • Connecting my Powerbook to my iMac for internet sharing via airport

Thanks in advance for any help.
I have given up trying to get an answer to my Airport problem and NTL Virgin.
I now have my iMac connected to web via ethernet all okay for a week now so it can't be my connection that was the problem.
I need to connect my PowerBook to the internet now at the same time. I would obviously like to do this using wireless technology. I was hoping to web share my iMacs connection via the airport cards on both macs but seem to be struggling.
I can set up a new network on the iMac and get the PowerBook to see it but it won't connect to the internet.
Any advice would be great thanks

To setup for Internet Sharing (Wired to Wireless):
    Setup the Network
Internet Modem > (Ethernet cable) > \[Ethernet port] iMac > (wireless) > PowerBook
    Enable Software Firewall - iMac
System Preferences > Security > Firewall
o Block all incoming connections (enabled)
    Enable Internet Sharing - iMac
    System Preferences > Sharing
o Select "Internet Sharing" from the options in the left column
o Share your connection from: Built-in Ethernet
o To computers using: AirPort (checked) (Note: Uncheck all other entries in the list.)
    AirPort Options...
    o Network Name: <anything you want>
    o Channel: Automatic
o Enable encryption (using WEP) (optional)
    o Password: (optional)
    o Confirm Password: (optional)
    o WEP Key Length: (optional)
    o Click OK
    o Select "Internet Sharing" again

  • XP can't connect to iMac-based AirPort for Internet Sharing

(I apologize if there's already an answer to my issue out there somewhere; I promise that I searched for it before posting)
    Hello!
I have an iMac running Tiger (and connected to the internet via ethernet -> cable modem), and I want to use it as a hub for encrypted Internet Sharing. I have two other machines, an older iMac and a WinXP laptop. As you might expect, I have no problem whatsoever setting up the network and getting the old iMac to see it, connect, and so on. The XP machine can see the network, and, when encryption is off, can connect to it, but I really want to run encryption.
I'm sure I'm not the first person to run into this problem, and I have found a couple of websites that discuss it -- however, I can't seem to make it work. Does anyone out there in forum land know of a step-by-step tutorial that would cover setting up encrypted Internet Sharing (over AirPort) on an iMac so that another iMac and an XP machine can connect? Any guidance you can offer would be most welcome.
    Thanks in advance,
    Dieter

Just to give a bit of an update, I chatted with Apple support, and in essence they told me that I had to take this up with the manufacturer of my XP laptop's wireless card -- understandable, given that my old iMac works just fine on the network (so the problem really isn't on the Mac end of things).
I tried using the information at http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20030803030354585, but no dice, unfortunately; maybe that will work for someone else, however.
I also found out something new -- I thought my XP laptop could connect to my AirPort network when encryption was off, but I was wrong. Instead, it just says "trying to connect," but nothing ever happens. But I CAN use the XP box to connect to other wireless networks in the neighborhood (shh, don't tell). So it looks like there's a deeper issue.
Please -- I know that someone out there has an answer; I really need to be able to make this work.
    Thanks again,
    Dieter

  • Internet sharing for Vista - iPod Touch

Having mainly used Mac as my operating system, I have figured out how to simply enable internet sharing through wifi, so that my iPod Touch would have an internet connection, and allow me to browse the web.
On the other hand, I am currently on Vista as of writing and am having trouble enabling internet sharing for my iPod. It is not as simple, and I am lost. Could anyone guide me as to how this could be done?

Just do a simple Google search for "vista internet sharing"
