Command to install a package.pkg.tar.xz from local disk

What's the command to install a package.pkg.tar.xz from local disk.

I'm pretty sure with a little effort and the knowledge contained in our wiki, the man pages, and the forum, you could have found this yourself. Easily.

  • Pacman: install package from local disk withou database refresh

Basically what it says in the title.
I've just installed Arch on a notebook that doesn't have a working ethernet jack. To get wifi working I need wpa-supplicant, so I downloaded the package using another machine. When I try to install it with pacman -U wpa-supplicant.pkg.tar.xz, pacman complains it doesn't have a database (which is probably right since I f*cked up /var), and without a network connection I can't do a pacman -Syu.
Can I force pacman to do the install, or do I have to install wpa-supplicant manually?

There is not point in rebuilding the wpa_supplicant.  If you are going to manually install it and you have the built package, just manually install the prebuild binary you already have.
I am not sure if manually installing is the best approach, but if it is just unpack the package, then copy the files to the appropriate place in the root directory.
When you get up and running, you will need to delete these and install wpa_supplicant via pacman - or you you could use --force for this one single package: pacman --force -S wpa_supplicant in order to overwrite the existing conflicting files.
I suspect there is a better means to regenerate a simple starter database.  You can download the sync databases from your mirror manually.

  • For installing software packages, long delay in recognizing startup disk

I have found that any time I install software using an installer package (e.g. flip4mac) on my iMac, there is a long delay before my startup disk is recognized as a valid installation location. All of the other drives are evaluated immediately, but I'd say it's about 20 seconds before I get the option of my startup disk (green arrow pointing down at a picture of a hard drive).
Does anyone know what is causing this and how I might alleviate the problem? It's annoying, and I wonder if it's a sign of some deeper problem.
I do have a bootcamp partition that I rarely use, and I have an external USB drive that I use for time machine backups.

The more external storage devices you have connected to your computer the longer it's going to take to for your computer to evaluate which volumes it can install on. Short of dismounting the external HD's first this is the price you will be paying for all the external devices. BTW I'm in the same boat, I have 3 EHD's daisy chained together using FW 800.

  • When I try to install CS6 Design and Web Premium from a disk I get this message "We are unable to validate this serial number..." What is the reason for this?

I purchased a disk copy of CS6 Design and Web Premium from a reputable seller last week and when I try to install it with the serial number I got it says "We are unable to validate this serial number for CS6 Design and Web Premium. Please contact Customer Support." What is the reason for this?
    Is the serial number invalid?

    Hi Ned,
Thanks for the suggestion. I eventually got in touch with Adobe Technical Support and it turned out that my Adobe Application Manager was not the latest version. They downloaded the latest version and installed it and that seemed to solve the problem. I was able to install my CS6 Creative Suite and validate the serial number. All seems to be going well at the moment.

I just build a package gmchess-0.20-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz from PKGBUILD,  I unpack the gmchess-0.20-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz and create a folder gmchess-0.20-1-i686.pkg, after changing some .png files in this folder, I compress the gmchess-0.20-1-i686.pkg folder back to gmchess-0.20-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz, however it can not be installed with command pacman -U, I try to search wiki, but get no clues, thanks for help.

Thanks for your detailed reply, here is PKGBUILD, there is no source array about png, can I just put in the source array for new pngs?

  • [pacman] Error when i try to install any package

    Hi,
since a few days, i've got some problems with pacman.
For example, i try to install 'filezilla' and i've got these messages :
Erreur: échec de récupération du fichier 'libsm-1.1.1-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz' depuis ftp.free.fr : Service not available, closing control connection
I've try to change the mirror used by pacman, but nothing has changed.
In fact, i'm not sure, but it seems that these problems have appeared since i upgraded pacman to new version 3.4
    Thanks for your help.

Firstly, thank you i used 'export' since now to have messages in english.
So the error message is :
error: failed retrieving file 'gtkhtml-3.30.2-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz' from ftp.free.fr : Service not available, closing control connection
Secondly, i tried pacman -Syy before used pacman -Syu filezilla, but nothing changed.
    My mirrorlist is :
    Server = ftp://ftp.free.fr/mirrors/ftp.archlinux … po/os/i686

  • Pacman failed retrieving *.pkg.tar.xz

I recently discovered that my system was not upgrading because pacman was looking in repositories with older versions of files.
    I added this to /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
    Server = http://archlinux.org/$repo/os/x86_64
    Pacman needed upgrading
So I upgraded pacman from 3.3.x to 3.5.4 and updated the database as instructed
Now I sync'd with pacman -Sy
It gave errors about not being able to find core.db and other .db files but appeared to sync the repositories anyways
Now I started seeing lots of packages that needed upgrading, including pacman
So I upgraded with pacman -Su and every file gave an error like the following line but then appeared to download
error: failed retrieving file 'man-db-2.6.0.2-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz' from archlinux.org : Not Found
I searched all around but haven't seen anything definitive about these kinds of errors
One suggestion I saw was that this is connected to the pacman database version change
Does anyone know why those errors are happening and how can I fix it?

I tried to remove db, but too many other system packages use it.

OK, looks like it was my problem with wget settings. I wonder why it happens only on testing. Probably all other repositories were downloaded via http.
    Sorry for false alarm.

  • Uncompress .pkg.tar.xz and install result without pacman

Can the pacman packages be untarred and stored ready to install by either pacman or otherwise...probably otherwise?
Purpose, to reduce access time for package installs, which pacman must untar before installing.  These untarred packages would be used in a "live" ram system from flash storage devices.
    Any way to do this?

    file:///media/disk/cache2/untar/avahi-0.6.27-2-x86_64.pkg
This file in flash has three folders, Etc, usr and var.  It was extracted from the .pkg.tar.xz.
This is the situation that needs a means to install the .pkg listed above, used as an example.
I assume that it is ready for install since it has been untarred.

  • Metainfo in .pkg.tar.gz

I recently had cause to manually tweak a package after I had made it. I realized that I needed a script in /etc/profile.d/ that I didn't include. I didn't want to remake the whole thing because it's an svn install and I do try to keep the source clean by copying it into a new folder and building from there. So I referenced the wiki and the forums for how to manually edit a package and didn't find much (maybe I'm not looking hard enough/well enough).
Anyway, the building packages wiki says
Typically, the resulting package file is a file called foo.pkg.tar.gz.
In fact, it is no more than a gzipped tar archive or 'tarball' which contains:
        * The files to install
        * .PKGINFO: contains all the metadata needed by pacman to deal with packages, dependencies, etc.
        * .FILELIST: lists all the files of the archive. It's used in order to uninstall the software or to check for file conflicts.
        * .INSTALL: a file used to execute commands after the install/upgrade/remove stage. (This file is present only if specified in the PKGBUILD.)
However, I untarred the package and I only found .PKGINFO and the files. I understand not having a .INSTALL because I don't make use of pre_install() or post_install(), but there is no .FILELIST. Is that from an older version of the setup? Or was the file hidden away?
By the way, ought I make a wiki page for manually editing a made package? It's simple, if you know where to look, but if you're not comfortable with playing with things and reading bash it might be painful.

    majiq wrote:
Well, the makepkg -R doesn't touch the build() function, though, and really what I would've needed to do was skip most of the build() function until the end. I think there are some cases that might merit it. I could think it handy to modify an internal configuration file here or there without having to build the beast (the one-and-a-half-hour-to-compile beast in my case).
Why is it not recommended? Is it because there's no solid record of what was done, then?
    exactly.
afaik, if you use separated build() and package() function, you can simply edit the package() function and run makepkg -R

  • Jgraphx-1_5_1_11-1-any.pkg.tar.xz in community (i686) repo.

Inside community repo there is a packet named jgraphx-1_5_1_11-1-any.pkg.tar.xz.
    ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/community/os/i6 … pkg.tar.xz
This packet can't be downloaded (550 Failed to change directory). It causes some rsync errors.
symlink has no referent: "/community/os/i686/jgraphx-1_5_1_11-1-any.pkg.tar.xz" (in archlinux)
IO error encountered -- skipping file deletion
There is also a packet named jgraphx 1_4_1_0-1 and is what pacman tries to install.

Maybe your sync database is out of date. Upgrade the system and try downloading the package again.
    pacman -Syu python2-pytz
If that doesn't work, there may be something wrong with your mirror. Change it in /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist and run the above command again.

  • Fakepkg: install placeholder packages

I got annoyed with updating the nvidia packages all the time as they made a new release and usually when i just changed the abs package it didn't work for some reason and the package didn't include vdpau and i was too lazy to investigate. Since nvidia have an excellent uninstall function i felt safe just installing the official package. But then I had to get pacmans dependency resolution off my back, so i made this:

I like your script, it might come in handy.
as a side comment, you were "too lazy" to investigate the nvidia package?
    yet you created this script...
all you had to do was install the nvidia-beta/nvidia-utils beta to get all the libs in the nvidia installer
as far as i know it has libcuda, libvdpau, etc in the nvidia-utils-beta package.
    good job though
